Efficiency in terms of maintaining speed and momentum through corners and undulating terrain i.e timing of efforts, making every watt count so to speak. Optimise your everyday riding position, the aero position on the hoods with bent (lowered arms) will minimise drag as opposed to sitting upright on the hoods . You can save 10.4 watts at 30 kph or 35 watts at 45 kph according to cycling tips (4/5/2021) and its free!

I believe Josh at Silica figured out aero socks have the same gain as OSPW, so much cheaper bang for buck.

I believe Josh says you gain about .5w with ospw, but probably 5-10w for aero overshoes or socks, so those are a no brainer and comparatively cheap.

With chain optimization, don’t forget chainrings and cassettes. A worn chain, a dirty chain wears the rings and cogs too. I also preach technique: float on the bike… don’t muscle the bike around, it wastes watts and fatigues the rider. Great vid and good suggestions.

I’m looking to get back into time trials,after a 5 year hiatus through injury and Covid, with a 25 mile PB of 1 hr 3mins 39secs, with road bike and clip on tri-bars, and really aim to under an hour. I’ve upgraded from tiagra to 105, fitted narrower handlebars, and will buy a skinsuit & aero socks. Question is should I ride tubeless for a marginal gain v latex inner tubes? I’m thinking tubeless for lower rotational weight. Your thoughts Alex and keep up the good content 👍🙏?

Definitely agree with race position on the bike, too easy to train riding on the top of the bars. I'm carrying an extra 3kgs at the moment so getting aero is more difficult but doing my best 😄 Cheers.

Does the oversize pulley have the savings negated due to aero drag? It's larger, seems like a sail out in the wind.

I'd say number 4 should be the top 1. The biggest aero drag is the rider on the bike, training in position is key, even more so for beginners than seasoned athletes. To help with that, i'd add Yoga. Yoga will help you understand your own body positioning and mobility a lot more, will help you stay confortable for much longer in certain positions, will greatly help your capacity to rotate your elbows to tuck the arms in while maintaining a good open chest for increased lung capacity AND will massively improve your breathing from the diaphragm while maintaining a steady core to eliminate parasitic movements when delivering power. It's only benefits, just try it. (Just be careful not to do much of those few yoga styles that put the emphasis too much on flexibility and long-time stretched out positions as this could have you lose on muscle springiness/tonicity)

Also, if you can, there's an overlooked area under the chin that often creates a small 'air pocket' which equates to a tiny bit more drag so, weirdly enough, if you can just grow a beard ahah

You missed a bunch of lower hanging fruit, in my opinion 1. Get good tires (and inflate them to the right pressure). Conti 5k 2. Shave your legs (arms if you want to go all-out). 3. Aero socks. While mentioning the skin suit is great, I think just a very tight fitting top is already going better than many people do

Thanks for the feedback, agree re the socks, tire pressure was a main marginal gain in the vid, and easy free gain. Shaving arms and legs has been tunnel tested to almost no gain at all. in some instances patches of hair on legs can improve aerodynamics if placed correctly

@@AlexDowsettOfficial As I'm sure you know all too well, there are a number of variables affecting the answer. The rear mech is in disturbed air, but the cage and chain is still in the airstream so there will be some losses. The savings are between 1W and 2W at best. Your also adding some additional weight with the additional chain links and the system itself. I'd spend the money on clothing, tyres and helmet instead :)

id say clean your bike , and replace bar tape regularly. Have thick, plush, luxurious stuff on the training bike, and thin, stretched stuff on the race bike.

Unless their direct sponsors, sram, shimano stipulate not to modify components with 3rd party products. Shimano actually sponsor very few teams, most teams buy it and can then use OSPW.

But then other way of looking at it, if there was a slight performance advantage with the vast amounts of resources in R&D at SRAM and Shimano, as well as Campagnolo they would be supplying their components with OSPW. Because I'm sure they would have tested it in lab conditions.

Fair comment, I’d say another way of looking at this is to the average consumer a small and ultimately un feel-able (for want of a better word) % performance gain is negated by the slightly more innefficient shifting experience, added maintenance & adjustment difficulties and higher likelihood of the chain falling off due to less tension issues that ospw can bring

​@Jiyon1 not really. SRAM and shimano have to look a tons of factors that the aftermarket doesn't think about. Very long term reliability, shifting performance, weight and crash avoidance. If you wipe out, you're more likely to have derailleur or hanger damage with oversized pulleys. That said, the gain is small(many gains are) but measurable and a decent amount of that gain is lost in aerodynamics unless you have the aero cage. It's definitely dirty air out back but it's something a couple of friends tested in the tunnel and the aero cage is faster than a stock cage and that's without accounting for pulley friction.

I'm also unsure as to why you think 3 are not marginal gains. Gains are gains and the human and bike are one when cycling. So is a gain in physiology not a gain? Marginal or maximal?
