Did this all make sense?
@dash_rabbit

Absolutely. I had one of these issues; that scrappy business at the bottom compliments of a stylist who over layered my already thinnish hair and cut too far back from my ears. (maybe noticeable in my pic) I consulted with a new stylist who is super talented. Since you can't ADD back length 😁, she created a blunt chin length bob that made my hair look full, healthy and amazing.

100% I like layered styles. My hair is just past my shoulders and it can be so difficult getting the right layered look. So many stylists don’t know how to layer hair so it looks good.

Very good... I have a new shag cut... or layered bob, and I was checking my front to back layers, side layers and ends in the back during this video. 😉 I have a very talented stylist, a master barber of 22 yrs, who totally gets how to layer my hair. I went from a longish pony tail with bangs to just below shoulders with layers and bangs. Your videos helped me know how I wanted to transition out of ponytail/bangs to an awesome easy and flattering layered cut. How about doing a video explaining the shag cut and a "do this, not that" tutorial to rock that style. BTW, you are a treasure ❤ Thank you for your time and passion. You are truly valued and appreciated.

I gotta say, what I do love about these heavily layered and texturized haircuts, is that they lend themselves very well to air drying hair. On my thick and dense, wavy hair, at least. These type of cuts might look a little too 'extra' when carefully blowdryed, but if you leave the hair to just dry or diffuse it into it's natural texture, they can really bring out waves and loose curls. And when the hair does that, the layering suddenly looks *way* less extreme and choppy. Whereas the kind of layering and texturing appropriate for smoothened hair is hardly noticeable then.
@comment6864
@comment6864 11 месяцев назад
Yeah, agree totally. When hair isn't layered enough in back, I end up frustratedly trying to scrunch it just to give it more of that layered look, more SHAPING.
@mangot589
@mangot589 11 месяцев назад
Agree. I constantly tell my stylist, who has been cutting it for years lol, shorter, choppy, layers. Shorter on the crown. Shorter on the sides. All I want to do is shake and go, honestly. Now I myself, my hair will actually make nice curls without anything. She’s stuck on “feathering”. And she’s absolutely horrified with how short I like my bangs lol. They’re not baby bangs, but that’d be ok. I get a lot of compliments on it, so idk. I do have to say I have thick hair with a natural curl. Which I didn’t discover until I cut it short. I’ve pretty much always had long hair. About waist length. But whoo boy. I LOVE it short. I tell her, I don’t want to feel my hair lol

Yes! I just had my hair cut and asked for a lot of the bulk on the bottom in back to be taken out. When I blow dry it, it creates a weird shape. Last night, I dried it about half way and let it air dry the rest because I was too hot to finish drying it. It actually looks so much better, and I even had it in a clip to get it off of neck earlier today and when I took out the clip it looked amazing!

I gotta admit that I “rocked” the 80’s Sassoon cut. Heavy straight bangs with a shoulder length blunt cut. I loved that hair cut. Crazy thing is as many times as I’ve tried to get that same cut since then has failed .😅 so I have stopped trying. Now it is almost waist length with more glitter highlights(gray strands) appearing every year😂

I don’t know if you’ve ever been a hair stylist instructor but your knowledge and ability to articulate the art of hair cutting is amazing. I never knew about the fact that there are styling rules or truths and also that you can take a hair cut and personalize it to the individual by cutting in volume in specific places all the while adhering to guidelines about where in the head layers should begin or end (i.e in front of the ears etc.) Great video so informative!

I really appreciate this explanation! It means a lot to find someone who puts so much thought into the look, presentation, and “the feels” of a haircut and style. I’m fortunate to have a great stylist who pulls straight up and scissors down into the hair and then textures lightly at angles out to the side of my head, just like you showed. I love my hair and in the thirteen years that I’ve trusted her with my hair, I only had to use someone else once in a pinch when she was sick and I had a reunion. This was back in May of this year, and I’m still trying to recover, lol. Thanks, I’m going to be binge watching your vids til way too late in the night to see what else I need to know 😃

The mistakes you point out absolutely make sense. The "mistakes" all make the hairstyles extreme or a bit odd requiring a conscious and deliberate intent in wearing them to pull them off and look edgy rather than odd. The examples you show really illustrate your points well and make even me, with no hair knowledge, get it!

You asked what we want to see. I would love to see some hair with texture/waves/curls in the examples shown with all of the different hair cuts and such. I have a daughter with very curly hair, one with curly hair and one with some texture-y waves. My hair is soft waves. I know (oh, how I know) that showing hair with actual texture/waves/curls is difficult to find online and such, but it would sure be helpful. I understand, straight hair is easier to show off cuts/styles, but it's like very thin models showing clothes. Nice but not necessarily beneficial for everyone. Thank you for all of the effort you put into your content.

All of this makes sense. I have learned so much from your channel. I have one of the hair styles that is not recommended… It is a longer mullet kind of style, which is a little straggly on the ends. I finally found someone who does razor cuts. I have been looking for that for 15 years with no luck until now. I am in my mid 50s, but somehow this style rocks on me. For the first time in my life, I am getting compliments! I cannot tell you how many bad haircuts I have had in my life. SO MANY. I even got a compliment from my hairstylist friend (I have learned not to mix friendship with business, so I have not gone to her, but it was a great confirmation!) So Justin is right that it really all depends on the person’s personal style.
@BeYounique...Maryanne
@BeYounique...Maryanne 11 месяцев назад
I totally agree about not mixing friendship with business (at least when it comes to hair). A friend was excited about moving on to a new salon after years of being unhappy at her old one. When I booked an appointment with her, she was thrilled. She gave me a great cut, HOWEVER, the assistant who washed my hair was in a pissy mood and threw a wet towel on my face. That was so inappropriate, unprofessional, and downright nasty. Plus I wear contact lens, and she could have hurt my eye. I said nothing because I was shocked. It put a bad taste in my mouth and I never went back to the salon.
@MrAshtonone
@MrAshtonone 8 месяцев назад
@@BeYounique...Maryanne I am sorry to hear you had such a horrible experience. However, I would definitely have mentioned the incident to your friend. Maybe this was a one-off incident or perhaps this is normal behavior for the assistant and needs to be addressed. Also, not letting your friend know what happened may leave her thinking you were dissatisfied with her service, when in fact you were. I think it would be a good thing to share your experience with her since the assistant may be doing the same or worse to many clients and that is a problem for the clients and the people who work there - your friend already lost you as a client because of this incident. Just a thought.

I wonder if people realize what all goes into creating a great hairstyle for people. Their basic hair, their height and weight, their lifestyle ( and what they will do to maintain it), what they want, versus what is possible with their hair….I considered every haircut I did a work of art. Communication with the client is key. And to explain what won’t work for them, and why

It is extremely difficult to find a stylist like that. I have found most stylist, at best, can do one hairstyle well. And they just do that style - usually Rachel from friends in the 90s - no matter what you say. And that is best case scenario.

I have found most stylist don't take into consideration your hair texture (ie: naturally coarse or fine, whether its naturelly straight, wavy, or curly, etc...). They also don't ever ask about your styling abilities & how much time you want to spend trying to style. They all want to cut my hair as if its straight & not coarse, & that I actually have skills/abilities with a blow dryer & **want** to blow dry & iron my hair 🙄

Does anyone remember the “cap cut” from the early ‘80s? The stylist cut the top part shorter than the rest of the hair and, depending on what you wanted, left the rest of the hair longer. I loved it. It took care of the volume I needed on top ( because I have a round face with a small forehead), and leaving the length with minimal layers took care of not having width at the sides. It made my face look slimmer. I wish I had the courage to try this again.

Great video, loved seeing the examples and the analysis of them. Also appreciated you showing people who can break the "rules", sometimes it can just sound like an expert is trying to not hurt people's feelings when they say "But if you love these, of course keep doing them". Of coures you don't want to make someone feel bad, but there are always some people that can pull things off.

Thanks! Great video....that really helped me understand how to better articulate style preferences to my hairstylist. I have had ALL of those haircuts at some time when asking for some "texture" or "some layering" in my fine very straight silky textured hair! The "choppy" look really stands out when it happens and looks like what my husband calls the "lawnmower cut". Thanks for sharing your knowledge and creativity. I am in the process of finding a new stylist since we moved, so hopefully your tips and terminolgy will help me communicate better, find a good match, and end up with a good cut .

I’ve had some absolute howlers of hair cuts in the past. 😂 some literally have looked like they were cut with a knife and fork! For anyone struggling with layers putting a bend in them with hair straighteners can disguise some of the straggly bits. I learned the hard way😢

New subscriber here! Loved this tutorial! I have always loved cutting hair -it really is an art. I went through all the schooling, but never worked in the industry for various reasons, but I love learning new techniques to cut friends and family's hair, I also cut my own hair as it seems most hair stylists over layer my fine hair, regardless of what I tell them I want. Thank you for pointing this out and making it easy to understand.

Agreed. I want to be able to rock those loose, shaggy short looks, but I get a reality check when I look back at styles I’ve tried over the years. Everything from a pixie, to Beatles bowl cut, to long layers and waist length hair… it seems like choosing the right shapes, lines, & focus means more than the hair style. I have been for focused on style (Bob or shag) and not focused on what the shape and lines are emphasizing. Probably not a great candidate for a messy shag & probably not the right shape for me. I’m still on the hunt.

You nailed it on the head! It’s really easy to want to dictate your hairstyle by styles you see, and like, but working around your hair, texture and face shape is huge! If you can figure out a way to marry those two along with a style you like then you are really in good shape!

Loved your valuable expertise and advice! I'm over 60 and have thin hair. I do best with the lift and some curl I get from layering. Then my hair doesn't look lifeless and flat. And when there's gentle blending with bangs into the layering, it looks more graceful for my face. Great inspiration!

What fun! Thank you. I get what you're talking about. I think a major factor in whether a cut&style works for me or not is if it works with curly and thinning hair. The styles you showed at the end of this video were both on women who I think have naturally curly hair. I like both those styles, but the brunette at the end is probably closest to what works for me. Everything else you said so makes sense. Kudos!

Thank you so much for doing this video!! I have always wanted the "right" medium cut but always ended up with the "wrong" one. When explaining what I wanted from the length of the front, crown and bottom, I've always gotten " I know what I'm doing" vibe. It has gotten to the point where I no longer go to a salon, my hair is now basically one length and I do my own trims and shaping. I'm now an older woman and I'm finally happy with how my hair looks every day!

Had a thought for a possible video topic: hair for your personality style. Might be cool to get some opinions on what might suit a free spirited type, or a bookish type, a professional office vibe, vs. hippie style, etc.. I know that’s very subjective; however, there are factors like convenience or practicality, or just what a hair style is communicating upon a first impression. While shape, texture and color dictate some hairstyles over others, it could be helpful/fun to have a few examples of hair types for life styles and what they say (strong, weak, approachable, high maintenance, casual or carefree). I know that’s a lot of opinion based stuff- but we’re online for many opinions & thats why we like your channel, you give it to us strait. 👍🏻

Thank you for this video. Right on time. I have thick curly hair, but when I wear it straight, it’s nice. I’m wearing a shoulder length bob right now but I’ve been debating on having my hairdresser take out the bulk from the bottom of the bob. It’s too thick in that area. It’s either that or long layer the bob.🤷🏻‍♀️
@justinhickox
@justinhickox Год назад
You can definitely take Buck out of the bottom if you’re wearing it curly or wavy. If you remove bulk, just ensure that you don’t remove too much around the ears were in front of the ears is that’s where I can start to get almost thin looking.

This makes me realize that what I want in a hair cut is all the wrong things and I still want it. I like my hair length to be just above my shoulders and I do have bangs and layering throughout. I always feel like I want shorter layers on top even though I know it might not match up to the other layers. I don't even care. I just need more life on the top part of my head, more fluff totally changes the shape of my round face and I NEED that. My hairstylist won't do that, probably for the reasons explained here. How do I get the volume on top and still have a good haircut? I have thin hair strands but a lot of hair and very very straight but I usually curl it with a round brush.
@tallisinwonderland4724
@tallisinwonderland4724 Год назад
Have you tried a little bit of back combing and texturising spray. I have really thick hair but it’s always flat at the crown. I bought a back combing brush or teasing brush as I’ve heard American ladies call it and back comb underneath and then smooth out the top layer. It makes my face look less round 😂

I don’t blame you, Larin can be your best friend or your worst enemy! If you do curtain bangs, make sure you like the idea of the center part, and that it works for your face shape and hair texture. If not curtain bangs can be a struggle for people.

It has been really difficult to communicate effectively to a hairdresser what exactly I have ever wanted. Lacking the right vocabulary and a little shyness or intimidation has always gotten in the way. Your videos really dispel some of the issues. I usually cut my own hair, and your guidance is really so helpful! Reassuring! The last two cuts that ‘break’ the layering rules do NOT appeal to me - don’t seem to really work. They look way too shaggy, stringy and a bit too fussy and labor intensive to achieve and maintain the rather intended wind blown or messy look. It truly is quite a dance of grace and elegance and expertise to watch you bring about the best hair design and cut every time! Since the pandemic I have let my hair grow long and longer! Gradually I am allowing the natural ‘halo’ of silvery tendrils frame my otherwise light to medium brown locks. Now…I love the trailing length, but question how much if any trimming - yearly - will not compromise the romance I am having with long hair!
@wkt2506
@wkt2506 10 месяцев назад
Agree - this video is also really useful if you've got an idea what style you want, then you can look at a hairstylist's work with a more discerning eye so you know what your looking for and you can see what they've done previously. I'm pretty sure that most stylists have certain go-to ways of cutting and especially with newer less classic styles some stylists just wouldn't know where to start, might try and give you what you want but without experience its really hit & miss. Obviously it depends on the individual stylists skills, education, continuing training, era, analytical skills, experience with your hair type etc.

Fabulous video! (The model at 11:27 looks amazing; so true she's rocking the look). Several years ago a stylist did the thing to me where she made the bottom layers too thin. I felt like Carol Brady of The Brady Bunch. I hated it, and it's not what I wanted. The stylist was more concerned with her phone call than what she was doing to my hair. I ended up going somewhere else, and getting it cut super short to correct her mess. Thank goodness my hair grows like weeds! 😺
