Not just cheap guitars that suffer with this. The back of the neck on Les Paul suffers from this as well.

I own a bass with a maple neck and satin finish. Not sure what was used as a clear coat however I've used this technique followed by a quality wood paste wax. Slick as a baby's behind.

Nice quick work. I like the idea of using painters tape. I also saw someone use a bit of water and shaken out of the pad before sanding. I did sand the back of a new custom shop Les Paul neck to let you know. It was just to much nitro and got real sticky quick. Nice and satin now. Just to let you know you can buff the neck out and get a gloss finish if you want to return it to that original state.

Hadn't thought of buffing to go back to gloss, nice tip. Thanks for commenting!

What number of sand paper you used? I just get a Gibson J-45 and after a week the sticky neck Bother me

It's just a Green Scotch Brite pad from Walmart. Same ones you use to clean your pots and pan. Most likely found on the isle with dish soap and sponges and such. Thanks for watching!

I was just commenting that I have 4 cheap guitars and no problem. Got myself a Gibson standard for a month and already having this problem. Thank you for your feedback. I was scared to ruin my brand new Gibson. 😬

Great vid, thanks for posting! Would’ve been nice to see a closeup “after” shot of the neck, though.

Yeah in looking back it would have been a good idea. If you can watch the video on a PC monitor or a large TV you can get a pretty good look at it. Thanks for watching!

3:16 I have done all my guitars this way, but instead of using the “green” Scotch Brite, I first use the industrial burgundy, then grey and finally white pads. This provides an even slicker finish. I found the green (homeowner) pad to be a little rough. Anyway food for thought. I NEVER use steel wool for anything now

Thanks for the reply! I'll try your method on my next guitar neck!

I have a PRS 35th Anniversary Core Custom 24 with a lacquered neck. I don’t play it as much as my American Fender Pro II Strat, because the Strat already has a matte neck that is so easy to play. I’m considering this on my PRS, but I also am very hesitant…

I can empathize. Though I've not tried it, I've read that the matte finish buffs out easily. I guess it's trying to maintain a resale value or enjoy the guitar to its fullest. Thanks for watching!

While it probably fixes the sticky feel, it damages the finish of the neck which I'm not too fond of

Yes sir, it does put fine scratches in the poly. Several folks have said it will buff out if you want it sticky again. Bill hasn't had the guts to do it to any of his basses. Thanks for watching!

Damages a finish that never should have been there in the first place on the neck not the front. Nobody is looking at the back of the neck besides your fingers sticking to it.

@@WillBhart There you go playing the logic card again, and you are right. Guitars are tools weather they cost two hundred or two thousand. Playability should be the most important thing.....and yet, so hard to do. Thanks for watching!
