In my last SWE intership, my colleague and fellow intern at JPM had a BA in Classics with a minor in music. The dude only went to a coding bootcamp but finnessed his way through the interview and he's now a junior dev in the quant shop. When I learned this, I realized that they aren't just looking to recruit the CompSci tryhards from target schools for junior dev positions, but for people that are teachable and have atleast an intermediate technical ability (Basic coding) and decent math skills. They'll teach you literally everything else.

This man gets it! It’s not about the degree, it’s about the skillset. Of course, if you have the correct degree you you most likely have the skillset, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t possess the skillset without the correct degree (and quantitative trading firms hire for the skillset).

I'm betting the JPM internship heavily worked in his favor... He likely had a good GPA too... Mine is not listed. I'm finding it impossible to get recruiters to be interested in me past initial phone interviews. I am timid in these calls and working on being more confident though. It is agonizing to consider that it might be the case that improving my confidence may not bear much fruit if I have been tossed for GPA, rather than for some lack of confidence on my part, on the phone...
@0x404-w5w

@@Zeegoner He had a portfolio of about 6 big projects, a 3.2 GPA, A ton of charisma and self-confidence. He was also very lucky. At the right place at the right time. Unfortunately, luck is a factor that negates everything else. You have to be lucky to get through the first 2 interviews. You are getting to the phone interview phase. This is actually a big victory! most applicants don't even get close to this. Keep working on those soft-skills and beef up your portfolio with some complex projects!

started watching this channel a month ago, just got my first quant dev job offer having only a bachelors in math/stats & 2.5 yrs work experience. Interview involved working on two projects - they wanted to see what I could do. Happy to chat about it with aspiring quant traders/analysts/developers

Hey brother what specific projects were you working on ?

Hey Aaron, hope the job is going well if you took it! I am interested in hearing what kind of math was involved and the level of difficulty. I am interested in this career potentially but have limited background in math other than some stat and calc 1. Coming in as a senior I am set to complete my degree in SCM and MIS, but after taking one of my stat classes I got really interested in this stuff. My professor actually suggested changing my major before realizing I was almost done lol. My question is, what would you recommend that I can do within a year to make myself as competitive as possible for a position like the one you were offered. Just for some reference, I am coming from a reputable university with a 3.73 GPA, two internships (one of which was as a financial analyst), I have a coding background, and I am completing a data science certificate.

All have done evil “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23) The penalty for sin is hell (Revelation 21:8). Because of Gods love for us Jesus Christ came down from heaven to take the punishment for our sin on the cross in which he was spat on, beaten, mocked and laughed at. Christ died for the sins of the world and The third day God raised him from the dead (Praise God). This was done so that those who believe on Christ will not perish (hell) but have life everlasting (heaven); be justified by Gods grace through redemption in Christ (John 3:16) (Romans 3:24). The blood Jesus shed on the cross washes away our sin if we Believe in The Son of God and his finished work (ordained by God) on the cross. When this happens the believer receives the righteousness of Christ in place of their own unrighteousness (all sins are forgiven) and this makes them saved (going heaven) and they are born again as a Christian. (Romans 3:25-26)

I still feel like having a computer science degree is still seen as ideal to break into qua t trading, as a CS degree is often on the list of the educational background needed on the quant trader job postings.

I understand what you're saying, but you're merging misconception 1 with misconception 5. Furthermore, you are not understanding that a job requirement is a wishlist, not a strict set of requirements. Misconception 1 states that need a STEM degree, which is proven to be false by the quantity of candidates that don't come from traditional backgrounds that have broken into QT. Even QT-adjacent industries like Hedge Funds hire unconventional candidates, like journalists (who hold degrees in journalism, not STEM). Misconception 5 focusses on the perception that you cannot make it into QT after having already spent time in an unrelated position. I picked an example that is tangentially related, like QD -> QT, but I've met many people who were structural engineers for 10+ years who went from designing buildings to writing code as a QD. At the end of the day, many firms don't care what your degree is or where you went to school, especially post-graduation. I've med QDs with history degrees, and QTs with music degrees. If you are unconvinced, that is fine. You can continue to hold these incorrect beliefs while others who don't land positions in the industry.
@keiarash5058
@keiarash5058 3 года назад
@@CodingJesus I always thought that to be a QD you need a natural talent for coding and start coding at an early age. But since a mid-career structural engineer has made that transition, perhaps its not as hard as I thought it was. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks so much for that wonderful Video! I have a question, please, if you allow. When backtesting the algo, would you rather test each month individually or focus on the bigger picture, like 2023, 2022 or even a biyearly period? I just wonder whether the individual month or year is better for improving the results or does it depend on the personal goals for the algo?

I'm self taught, and I've noticed that when trading options, on the lower avg volume stocks, by the time I go to execute my trade, the profit is gone. And setting my sell-point is like a 50/50 prospect. It's gotten to the point that I want to learn how to make my own code....cant beat a "bot"

Find a company in your country with an office in the U.S/U.K and transfer there. It will be hard for you to get an offer because of visa issues. At least for the U.S.

Hey if I am right, quant developers don't need to have a vast knowledge of finance areas and create algorithms. That's the job of Algorithmic traders. Am I right? I just wanna make sure I am applying for the correct roles.

I think you should come out open and say what type of companies you are talking about. For example, Optiver, Imc, Flow traders. What you are talking about would be almost misleading when it comes to some other places that also have roles named Quant Trader...
