I've built several outdoor systems from wood. Lined with a home depot pond liner and pump. One 1000 gallon and 700 gallon. Thick wood and insulation help to regulate temperature. For anyone wondering if wood will work, yes. Just remember water weighs 68 pounds per cu ft. Your tank needs to be built like a tank.
Have you built it from wood? I would also consider the weight of the fish. Nearby there is a pond liner manufacturer used in mud pits for oil wells. Mine is about 100 feet x 4 feet on each side of the entry way. Using rail road ties and putting pipe through them to the ground is one way. Insulated and secured. Mine I am thinking of totes. But remove the plastic, the top bars and the sides. Put the plastic in, secure it, then the top horizontal bars. Cheaper, strong, can add wood to the side for insulation and aesthetics. Looking for an alternative to join the totes.
Really good sound advice. Pro tip, dont be afraid to call manufactures about equipment such as pumps and blowers. You would be greatly surprised how many will actually sell to you first hand at an insanely reduced price compared to off the shelf or second hand distributor (brand name). This is where/how you get your backup equipment all in one go, especially pumps.
Just starting and found no air in buckets, a piece of equipment pinched an air hose off, cause the line to blow off the one way valve. Thanks for the tips.

A xounter poi t to cinsider on your point about pipe width. Not always rexomended to gonwider when not needed. Stick to just over the diamitor of the pumps widest oitput option. Wider pipe rediced velosity frestly resulting in stuff falling out of flow and settling in the pipe. May find a 2 inch pipe casues issues more thsn the 1 inch pipe. Your only restricting flow if the pipe is narrower than the pumps output port or the end of the line is restricted or its pushing water upwards or excessive pipe lengh or harsh bends. Avoid colit fittings too want exsternal fitting so inner bore of pipe dont have narrow sections
Starting an aquaponic farm in Odessa Texas on one acre using cleaned totes or I will make a large rectangular pools 10 x 200 feet. 1. Can I have fish underneath the floating plates of vegetables? 2. How can I make my own floating planter for the plants 3. How do I size the pump and filter for the tank? 4. Can I filter the water using a ROWPU and ultra violet light? 5. Are there plants that can be in the tank to feed the fish? Catfish, Bass.
1. Depends on the species, but most likely no 2-3 DOW blue boards, I have raft templates with measurements in my online course, also info on pump sizing 4. ROWPU? UV yes but has been known to degrade hydroponic nutrients 5. People use duckweed but another thing you must upkeep etc

A Lot of people don't know about certain plastics used to manufacture tanks and other containment totes etc,. and the Toxic chemicals contained within them. These chemicals are often released into your water and ultimately your fish and vegetables when certain conditions exist such as high temps, cooler temps. and reactions to certain nutrient additives for your fish and/or Vegetable stock. Stay away from Dollar store products as much as possible. Stuff made in China for cheap "disposable" uses are often waste petroleum chemicals that are filled with toxic waste and heavy color dyes to make them better looking to the buyer. Buy from a reputable Industry dealer/manufacturer that makes specific environmentally safe products only.
@Ching Vang I've known people that went to the Dollar store to purchase the mini plastic baskets to use as net cups in their floating rafts and after a couple of months the dye coloring had faded and leached out totally into the water, plants and Fish. People don't think trying to save a buck.
Hi, I am interested in starting a small-scale unit and have two questions about the plumbing. I was curious about the different types of PVC piping (UPVC, CPVC) and was wondering about your experience and recommendations considering the food safety of the different types of PVC piping. Or is there any other type of piping you would recommend? I was also wondering about the safety of using PVC glue to connect the pipes. Are there any you would recommend that would be food safe? Thank you.
PVC glue is food safe when dry and it is used for potable drinking water pipe connections for human consumption. CPVC is used for hot water and will not deform as much as PVC pipes do when heated.
Thanks so much for the good reminder! I’d like to ask, have you encountered harvesting slimy tilapia from your system? I’ve harvested the first tilapia from my fish tank recently & it had a pretty slimy coating on the scales. Is that normal? It was pretty fresh when we ate it though.

if you have a question if its safe or not when it comes to food you should ask first before eating. I made that mistake before with eggs and found myself bedridden for almost two weeks with pain.

@@NewAgrarian sorry but does SLO stands for? I have another question. For the grow beds I was thinking about building concrete grow beds with tiles or a liner. What would you recommend? Labor is very cheap in Senegal.
If you're just starting out get a 40 gallon aquarium (used, there a lot of them out there). You can grow a lot with just that and some goldfish. If you need more nitrates (fertilizer) then just feed them more. If your filtration system won't take care of the ammonia then cut back on the food. Aquaponics is a fun hobby but there are much easier ways to grow vegetables.
In my town (in Canada) there's a hydroponics place that has been in business for decades selling kits and equipment for hydroponic tomatoes. After legalisation he immediately slapped a label on that said tomatoes **and** cannabis. Turns out he was growing his own the whole time, exact same method for both plants. Business is booming. Which is to say, if you can grow aquaponic tomatoes, you can grow some dank aquaponic buds just as easily
