5 Mistakes to Avoid When Buying a Tractor

I get e-mails all the time from people who are shopping for tractors and there are five common mistakes that can be made when buying equipment that we discuss today.
Got an e-mail this week from a viewer shopping for a sub-compact tractor, he wants a cab, he's going to be using it to brush hog and clear timber, and he wants a 5' cutter and he wants to know what brand I'd recommend. He could be making all five of them.
First, a lot of folks are shopping for a tractor that's too small. Sub compacts are great for small acreages and tight quarters, but if you're trying to brush hog a big field, you'll be on the tractor a long time. I'm not aware of sub compacts with cabs, and you have to be careful, a cab air conditioner will take 5-10 horsepower to run, and on a small tractor, that doesn't leave enough to do work with.
Second, be careful where you put a cab tractor. If you're brush hogging a big field in the summer, cabs are great. If you get cabs and low limbs together you can have an expensive disaster quickly. Cab glass is expensive to repair, and it doesn't take much of a tap from a limb to blast a glass out. You won't forget the first time you do that because of the sound it makes. If you have to put a cab tractor in the woods, invest in a pole saw or tree shear to prune the lower limbs before going there.
Third, in my opinion, a 5' cutter is too much for a sub compact tractor. Generally, on small tractors, you want the cutter to be the same width as the loader bucket. If the tractor has a 4' bucket, you'll want a 4' bush hog, a 5' bucket gets a 5' cutter, etc. Also, match the size of the cutter to the horsepower of the tractor and the size of material you want to cut. Every brush hog will tell what size material it's rated for and how much PTO horsepower is required to pull it. Don't get too light a cutter to cut your brush, or too little PTO horsepower to pull it.
Fourth, it's really hard to compare brands of cutters. Most of the major companies make an economy cutter that cuts up to 1" material, a mid-range cutter that cuts up to 2" and a heavy cutter that may cut 2 1/2 or 3" trees. If you compare one manufacturers economy cutter to another's mid-grade cutter you would think the latter makes better products, but that would be comparing apples to oranges. Bottom line is to find a good dealer that you get along with, have them help you spec a cutter and buy the brand that they're selling.
Finally, I get the feeling that this viewer is a kindred spirit...he's done a little shopping and research online and he just wants this project to be over and wants me to help him get something bought. I'm the same way when shopping for most everything, I do a little research, get bored and just want to get it over with. Haste makes waste when tractor shopping. If you do the research and take your time about making a decision, you may be rewarded with a tractor you can own the rest of your life. It's frustrating, but it's worth it.
I'm maintaining contact with this viewer and he's already changed the criteria for what he searches for. I'm confident he's headed in the right direction toward finding the perfect tractor for what he wants to do.

A 30hp tractor with implements is more useful than a 50hp tractor without.

A lot of people buy a hydrostatic tractor for ease of use but a shuttle shift will give you more horsepower. Not too many people take their road test on an old three on the tree truck anymore either though, lol.

Mike you're absolutely right, we all want a little more functionality or horsepower after we buy that first tractor. When I was looking two years ago, the dealer had a MF 1735M and I wanted, at a minimum, 40HP. Fortunately, he was able to get me a MF 1740M within a few days. However, I'm noticing when I am out mowing fields, there are times I wish I had a cab rather than open station, not to mention in the winter the heat would be nice to have. I can assure you, if I take that step one day, I'm going for at least a 50 or 55HP. Thanks for the advice, it's always spot on, and we appreciate you sharing your experience with us.

Great advice, I remember when I bought my Kubota, the Salesman after discussing my needs, pointed me towards a L2501, that’s 25 horse with 4 ft. Implements and initially I liked this recommendation. I took a few days and mulled over this decision. I decided that the tractor may be too small, I started looking at the L4701, which is 47 horse w/ 6 ft implements, I’m looking closely at the price points, I was very surprised to learn that there was only a 5 grand difference between the 2 tractors , and that 5 grand bought a whole lot more tractor. The salesman insisted that I did not need that much tractor and even tried convincing my wife on the issue and I truly expected her to side with the salesman if your just looking at the cost of each package deal, but she surprised me when she agreed the 5 grand bought a whole lot more tractor that came with options that did not come standard on the smaller tractor like working cruise which was way up high on my list of things I really wanted. Long story-short, it’s been 4 yrs since I bought the L4701 hydrostat and I’ve never been short on power or tractor. But had I been talked into the smaller tractor, I’m curtain I would have at some point wished I’d spent the dang 5 grand, and got pushed to the one I was wise enough to buy the first time around. Lord, I’ve made a lot of bad and poor decisions in my life, but I still feel good about this decision and believe I actually got something right! Great Vlog Mike!

Good advice Mike, I have a 45 hp open station Kioti, 2005. It has everything I was looking for and more. It was only after I bought it that I realized that by accident I had bought just the right tractor for me. The salesman Mark Farmer for Patterson Equipment in Moncton NB gets all the credit for that. I told him what I was looking for. He is a part time farmer himself here in Canada but originally from England as it turned out and his advice was solid. I took the time to speak with him about my needs and I could tell he was making sense and had no trouble following his recommendations. I paid more for the tractor and implements than I paid for my first house. It's a serious financial commitment for most of us and so it falls on us to do our research.

Great advice as always Mike. I certainly agree with you when it comes to "brand name". I sometimes get grief from friends that own "xyz" brand of tractor when I bought tractor "zyx" brand. Both do the job that I (we) want it to do. I really don't care if it has green paint, blue paint, red paint or orange paint. In my mind they are pretty much the same thing.

The brand probably depends on the dealer more than anything else. Right now I’m considering buying a Mahindra tractor. A Mahindra dealer is around a ten minute drive from my farm. Also they repaired my mower and charge a fair amount of money. Another farmer in the area said they are good and honest to deal with. I was not considering this brand till this happened. I like the Mahindra Max36 and think it work well in my little orchard.

I was shopping for my first tractor, I was thinking about buying a Kubota subcompact (BX series). When I saw loads of low hour BXs on Craigslist, I thought there was a reason buyers sold them off early. I ended up buying a compact L3800 and have not regretted it. It does what I want it to do, which is much more than the subcompact can.

Everything Mike is saying is the absolute total truth. I have been on this journey for two years and I can say that the industry forces you into a larger tractor then what you will start off wanting due to the lack of PTO hp. Medium compact tractors are the dream but not the reality.

This is one of the bigger issues actually than what color to buy. Who cares what color you buy if the dealer is worthless. I looked at a green tractor once, nope never again will I step foot on a green tractor dealer's lot. I was basically told I couldn't afford what I was looking at. The conversation ended there I told the salesman to pound sand and left. My tractor in my case will be orange when I purchase one. At this point its going to be a while.

If you're pushing a particular tractor model's HP limits, consider a geared transmission over a hydro-stat - less HP penalty getting to PTO HP.

Cutters .. you don't take a knife to a gunfight, goes for the tractor as well, I have a great massey 245, 40 hp. 540 rpm for the PTO, I plow with a two bottom plow,disc harrow, bush hog with a 6 footer, open cockpit, no electronics, no dep fluid , and work on it any day of week, use for my 4 acre garden, and bush hog the other 20 acres , also I rake the hay in our 50 acre hay field, the baling my neighbor does, I raise 35 head of Angus, in the front part I use a rotary mower to keep the lady 😊 Old School Tractors rule

YES, YES, YES!! Biggest mistake is buying too small of a tractor because of price factors. Then getting it and finding out it doesn't have the top-end capability. Also, try to stick with the major brands that have solid dealer networks. Worked with a contractor here in Las Vegas several years ago who bought an off-brand loader and asked him how he liked it. He said the unit worked out well but the dealer in Las Vegas went out of business and he had to get service out of a dealer 200 miles away in California. The cab advice is priceless because in inclement weather or hot weather that cab is a major advantage. Also, have had a few friends who bought compact tractors (off brand) and then had a hard time getting attachments for them because of a low-count machine base.

Good and responsive dealership that is close to you is better than what the brand is. Brand loyalty should be irrelevant in the compact and subcompact market
@wildbill23c
@wildbill23c 3 года назад
That is very true. Honestly I've always liked the green brand, but after the way a salesman treated me I'll never do business with green, don't care what dealership. An orange dealer salesman was awesome, offered to bring me a machine to my house right away so I could spend a day using it as I would normally on my property to see if that's exactly what I needed or if a different machine would be better. I declined the offer as I will not allow stuff like that on my property unless its in my name due to liability/insurance reasons. However, for the dealer to immediately offer to do something like that it was one huge plus...the salesman took the time to walk through everything I'd need to use the machine for and recommended the same machine that I had inquired about. He was building a quote with stuff that was compatible with the machine I was looking at, and showing all the discounts and options right up front that I may want to think about, or adjust to save money based on my usage. He walked me through the dealership, showed me the service bays, introduced me to the service manager, parts manager, office team, everyone, it was like talking with family. Its a locally owned dealership, and one of the brand's top dealers in the area too...must explain why I was treated so well. Most likely my purchase will have orange paint, but who knows by the time I am ready to step on a dealer lot again and open my wallet.

Another tractor HP consideration is your operating altitude. A generally accepted rule of thumb is that all NATURALLY aspirated engines, regardless of the manufacturer, will lose HP at a 3% per 1000' of elevation rate (physics). For example, I'm in Colorado at 7500'. That means a "30 HP" tractor will only be producing (30 HP - ((7500' * .03/1000') * 30 HP) = 23.25 HP. Note that turbo charged engines are not nearly as effected by altitude as naturally aspirated engines. Most sub-compact and lower HP compact tractors are naturally aspirated. Higher HP compacts are generally turbo charged.

Another great informational video Mike. Great advice about paint color/brand. It's funny though. The advice works both ways: having done my research (including watching several dozen Tractor Mike vids) I wound up buying a used machine with green paint on it because it fit the profile I was looking for. Although my experience with the dealer (which had just changed hands) was disappointing, I don't regret the time I spent in research or the brand I ended up with. I'm so glad you put the time into learning how to put up great RU-vid instructional content!

Good advice. I've been doing much of what you mentioned here. Looking at used, since we have only just under an acre and about 1/3 of that is a ravine. Some areas are pretty tight on access width so I always check the width on tractors so I'll be able to access everywhere I would want to go. While I realize brands (colors) don't mean a thing, distance to a dealer does. We're pretty limited on dealers in our area for some reason. That said, before next Winter rolls around I hope to have a tractor on our property. The wife is getting really nervous about me shoveling snow at my age. Lol

Its not a John Deere Cab either. Its a 3rd party sourced cab like their tractors are LOL. I can't recall the company that Kubota uses for their Sub-Compact Cabs, but they don't make their cabs either, at least not in the sub-compact or compact line. Its all 3rd party stuff, and extremely ridiculously priced, but then again if you can afford a toy, you can afford all the parts to go on the toy LOL.

Would a Deere 1025R be considered a sub-compact tractor? I know they have an optional cab (with heat only, no a/c). I'm sure several other tractors that size also have them available. I still wouldn't use a tractor that small to run a brush hog. I do however use a Cub Cadet to pull a 6' finish mower. That mower has its own gas engine though, all the tractor has to do is pull it around.

Yes its a sub-compact. The cab isn't made by John Deere either, its a 3rd party cab. I believe every sub-compact tractor cab you will find is 3rd party built...not a single tractor manufacturer builds their own sub-compact cabs, and some fit better than others.

The first mistake of buying a tractor is buying a new one. The tier 4 engines are going to be a nightmare down the road and extremely expensive to fix. I hate cel's on newer vehicles, it's a scam. I can't imagine having all that b.s on a tractor. Just more government overreach. If people would stop buying this crap the EPA would have no choice but to back off. I'm again in the market for a tractor but in no way going to buy anything with a dpf and all the electronic crap that can and will break.

Hi Mike, quick question re tractor stability. I'm on sloping land and I've reversed the rear wheels for a broader wheelbase. The dealer told me they had filled the tyres with water but I recently found they only filled the rears. Should the front tyres also be filled ? The tractor is a kubota L4400 4x4. I'm in Australia and it seems we don't use beet juice (?), just water. Thanks for any advice you can give, cheers.
@TractorMike
@TractorMike 3 года назад
Generally we don't fill the front tires, or tyres in the rest of the world, because the loader and the engine means they already have plenty of weight there. I've seen a few customers put ballast in the front when they were on slopes where I wouldn't even dream of going. On gentle slopes I wouldn't mess with ballast in the fronts.
@petercampbell4220
@petercampbell4220 3 года назад
Front axle pivots in middle. So front ire weight does not help with stability. It is too late when rear tier lifts, it is already going over by the time the front stops hit. Ok to add for traction, or foam fill if always fixing flats- HEAVY and $$$.

I'm usually not hung up on brands but i feel ive been burned by Mahindra. Horrible parts accessibility, dealers are dropping them and im afraid if i keep my Mahindra I will have an obsolete tractor. So I'm looking at spending the money for orange or green because they're built in the us and seem to have the best service and support in the kc area anyway.

#6.... Buy a tractor that's at least 30 horsepower more than your riding lawnmower. You'll be happy you did. :-).

My ride on lawnmower is rated at 33 HP courtesy of an Iseki 3 cylinder Diesel engine. So I should get a 60 HP tractor? I need a fairly nimble tractor with a low profile to get around my orchard. Maybe one of the Italian articulated tractors is the go. However they are expensive and they are Italian.

RULE #1 - Two years after you buy a tractor, you will realize that you should have gotten a larger one. This rule applies to the larger tractor you buy next too.

I know you come Frome a dealer and if everyone bought a used tractor new tractors wouldn't exist. Personally I think he should buy some older american made steel. He doesn't need it to make money or work it that hard. A used tractor will probably outlive him and be cheaper to buy and maintain. Buy used don't buy from a dealer. Are number 6 and 7 that should be on your list

Are you referring to something like an old Ford 8n or something similar? Although its not a 4WD and no loader option, I've actually been tossing the idea around of buying an old 8N Ford just for pulling a box blade, and possibly using a small bush hog on occasionally, and probably other implements I'd be able to pickup here and there as the need arises. Yes, I eventually plan on getting a Kubota BX2680 with a loader, and a few other implements, but an old Ford 8N would certainly fill the void I have right now in the fact I don't own a tractor at all LOL.

Get as big a tractor as the old woman will allow you to get or 50hp minimum whichever is bigger.
