1. *Use too much technical jargon while talking to the client* - _Do explain things in simple terms_ 2. *No/bad marketing* - _Go to meet ups and conferences and meet clients_ 3. *Not charging enough, ends up with worst clients* - _Charge more and make more money with less number of clients_ 4. *Implementing everything the client asks without considering downsides* - _Be the expert and advise clients about possible mistakes_ 5. *Forgetting the purpose of the project* - _Understand use case and scope of the project_

Exellent point on pricing. I go to freelance social events annually and the most controversial topic is freelancers under selling themselves. What people don't realise is that if you charge really low rates you won't be held in high regard. This comes from people not being confident enough in their ability or fear never getting hired because of lack of experience, so they charge low rates to get clients willing to hire them but then not raising their rates over time.
@MrJfergs
@MrJfergs 4 года назад
I would say another tip would to be using frameworks like bootstrap or tailwind even. Basically anything that can save you time. Unless the client specifies the project to be 100% custom. Which the price should reflect. I remember doing my first freelance project in just straight html CSS and JavaScript and it took much longer than necessary. I did all the writing optimized the 50+ images designed the UI and then built and deployed the site for 400$. It was not a good call on my part.
@josueem14

in retrospect, how much would you have actually charged?
@MrJfergs
@MrJfergs 4 года назад
@@josueem14 I think I should have at least charged 1500. It was one of my first projects and granted not the best web site but I did the following. Content writing Image optimization Responsive UI mockups And development + deploying the website. That could be 4 different jobs at an agency.

😲 so much good info. I made the mistake of being too technical and then offered to do it free for a relative. Big mistake as the "client" indeed wanted to dictate what I was doing
@johnyepthomi892
@johnyepthomi892 Год назад
Doing it for free is the biggest mistake. If they’re not investing in you, they’re not worth getting the help. They hold you saying if it works out they’d pay you, what guarantees that? Nothing , they may make up their mind tomorrow that they don’t need it or they found something else and the time you put in it goes to waste and your overall motivation go takes a hit. If they don’t pay , you’re not motivated to make a good product and that isn’t good for them either. It’s just a bad idea. Anyways, hoping better opportunity comes your way. Take care.

make sure you take up projects that eventually get you paid. Clients offering you equity for an upcoming startup is not the way to go. Most of these startup ideas are in ideation and the project takes a huge amount of engineering and time. If it fails, due to any reason, it's upto you to get the project monetized and then there's a whole different story. So ... that's my experience. It's always okay to discuss pay, as I have found.

Clients don't need to know all the technical details unless they have some technical requirement. Let's say they want access the database from some tool to do business analytics, then they would care if it is a SQL-based server or not. They simply care about what would impact their business.

Carlonn Rivers: thanks for the reply, but can you clarify what you mean by creating projects and trying different things, my current position , I have completed several projects and all are web development. But don’t have access to information that will allow me to learn and understand why it’s important to use this tech instead of this other tech when developing websites which is very important when talking with potential clients
@carlonnrivers
@carlonnrivers 4 года назад
Son Of Troy hmmm. I'd say I just watched many videos and created production ready applications. I don't have "the source of truth" For example, a client approached me to create a front page just showing the services they offer. I won't set up an entire react app for just that. That could be done on a one page HTML + CSS file. I'm still learning too. But from experience and logical thinking, you see what makes things easier to develop. As Kyle said, no need to over engineer when it's not necessary.

the low price thing, while it's important to understand, the reality of the dynamics is someone is going to eat shit. telling new developers that they should charge $100/hr doesn't allow anyone to cut their teeth. people want the prize without the work. new developers need projects, they need to understand WHY they should be worth the cost, and simply learning projects isn't learning web development. real world projects are the reality of what the work really is, not a project that is put out on the web that someone does at their own pace, without having to deal with all of the other aspects. when is a good time to start scaling up your pricing? you'll know when. it's the same feeling of why you started development in the first place. whatever pushed you to become better or to change career field, is exactly what will tell you when you should start charging more, and when you should drop those clients that you may still have expecting more for less. sorry not sorry, but, new developers do not have the full experience to charge the same rate as senior developers. this idea that you should charge high out the gate is another theoretical statement that can work for people that are very good with sales/business communication in the first place, but, not so good if you're technically minded but not good with people. it's also something a lot of very well established developers say, because they are doing the same cycle that came before them, with literally every business, of trying to raise up the value of the industry, which is good, but, not practical for a new developer. it's great to know what you should theoretically do. you can approach the client with what they are doing wrong, but, a lot of this actually falls on "soft skills" and how you deliver the message. i respect that you made the vid, it's just unfortunate that youtube is how it is in regards to marketing and the "5 blah blah blah" is more interesting to more people than an hour long class discussion on business practices in general.

So using React to Brochure websites is overkill ? why is that ? for me coding in react in 100x time faster than vanilla, 2020 no one should code in vanilla html/css/js it is a terrible idea and not scalable, if your client someday want a little upgrade like a new service, it is a terrible idea to not use a framework nowadays, they were created to simplify web dev in a very elegant way, everyone should use them....bad advice for this one
