I and my partner were at a crossroads regarding our finances. We both agreed to talk about it and sought a solution. I’m glad we found a way out although it's with professional help, but that marked the turning point in my finances.

Well, we've gotten into a plethora of assets with $73k spread across stocks (options and futures) for the short term and Roth IRA, index funds, and ETFs, for the long term. We've been investing with the help of a pro fund manager, Herman W Jonas who oversees our investments. Now we sit back and reap the dividends as we just reinvest at intervals.

Do not forget, when it comes to stocks that prices can be erratic, rising and declining quickly, often in relation to companies' policies, which individual investors do not influence.

Working with a fiduciary like Sir Herman has given me peace of mind in my stock investments. They prioritize my financial interests and have guided me towards stocks with strong fundamentals, resulting in consistent growth over the years.

@TheMirrrl
@TheMirrrl 2 года назад
@@lukerider479 Well in most European countries taxes are higher than in the US, BUT first of all: You'll start paying taxes as soon as you get your first paid position which happens AFTER the graduation. So you can start your career debt-free without the crippling anxiety of not being able to pay back a shit ton of money. Second: like this, people from poorer families can afford good education as well.
@lukerider479
@lukerider479 2 года назад
@@TheMirrrl so many people from other countries believe this about the US probably because our media makes it their mission to make it seem this way. College here cost money you pay it back and then you are done even if it takes a long time you are eventually done. In Europe you have crippling taxes for life to pay for your school. Second school here can be done much cheaper than many choose to ie community college or in state schools. Third we have a robust safety net that help the poor with many things including school.. difference is here I can make those decisions on what school I go to, how much I am willing to pay or if I need to go to college at all. In Europe you have no choice if you stop after high school they still require you to help pay for those that will go on to out earn you. Difference is choice

While navigating entrepreneurship (sometimes messily) we've been pretty transparent about things like student debt & utilities. When we separately began changing our mindsets towards money & educating ourselves, it really encouraged me. I would just ask situational questions about my partner's finances habit and attitude. If the attitude is toward using debt as leverage or solution, and does not change after knowing the effect of debt, then I will look for someone else. I have a financially dysfunctional family that treats money topic as taboo. It ends with me and that "it" applies to dysfunction or the family.

My boyfriend and I didn't even have to ask each other these questions, we just blurt out financially-related stresses, goals, excitements, and actions randomly as a way to get our thoughts/worries off our chests. We graduated college together but in completely different situations: he lived with his parents through school and has no student loans whatsoever, while I lived on my own throughout school and owe $33 000. He owns a new car and has to pay a lot on insurance and his car loan, while I take the bus everywhere and have no major transportation costs. We both have our individual thing setting us back, and are determined to support each other through tackling those issues.

12k for in vitro and 40k for adoption. Why does it cost 3 times as much to take care of the kids we already have than it does to artificially make more kids? Adoption should be near free, as it only punishes the kid who otherwise would have a loving family. Likewise, in vitro should be discouraged as it only worsens the overpopulation problem.
@CranKun
@CranKun 5 лет назад
jcrowley1985 Say you adopt a kid from another country. There’s private investigators to make sure the child is legally able to be adopted and not kidnapped from a family. There’s the adoption agency workers you have to pay for in your country and the agents who work in the country you’re trying to adopt from. Then there’s the matter of physically getting the child to you or vice versa so you’re paying for transportation. Then there’s either fees for the foster family or the orphanage that need to be paid off. There’s a lot that goes into this.
@basedtiger8984
@basedtiger8984 5 лет назад
1. Overpopulation is not a problem in every country. Many countries encourage their people to have kids to solidify the future workforce. 2. Everybody has the right to have a kid. Being born in a certain year/ region / country / should not restrict your natural born right to reproduce. It's a problem when people have children they can't afford or have time to take care of.

My husband is frugal, and I love it but sometimes he’s more cheap than frugal ! Or penny wise and pound stupid haha. For example, picking something because it’s the cheapest option, even if it’s not the best choice in the long run. However, I was the opposite. I grew up with parents who sucked at saving money and buy whatever they want if they could afford to. Meanwhile, my husband grew up with parents who pinched every penny. I don’t think I was ever as bad as my parents with money, but I still bought a lot of things I didn’t need, especially after getting my first full time job. We’ve been together for almost 10 years now (3 of those married) and I’ve seen us both changing a little over time to be a little more flexible and healthy with our spending! He’s willing to invest more in quality when it’s worth it, and I got better at stepping back and evaluating if I REALLY need something or not before buying it. Our # of disagreements about money per month are pretty low now.

Thanks for sharing this, especially the personal splurge money. If you don't mind me asking (and of course you can just ignore it) - why do you have equal amounts of money for personal budget rather than a percentage reflective of your income? (Assuming you don't have the same income - I have no idea). What are some pros and cons between splitting the splurge money equally versus based on income?
@TwoCentsPBS
@TwoCentsPBS 5 лет назад
Love this question, Rachel! We've always taught that the paycheck you bring home is not reflective of your value in the relationship. For example, would a stay-at-home parent be less valuable or deserve less splurge money than the working spouse? Keeping the personal money equal underscores the fact that this is a mutual, democratic partnership... not a dictatorship We've seen over and over that splitting personal-money based on income inevitably leads to resentment and a "parent/child" dynamic for the couple around finances which can quickly get toxic. Just our two cents, and thanks for the fantastic question!

@@rachell1794 my wife and I do the same thing. To us, when we got married everything became "ours". As such, we have equal spending amounts because we don't pay attention to who made what. The fact is that WE made $____ last month, and it's up to both of us to put that where we want it. Granted, some other budget items are used more heavily by one of us - she likes trying new things cooking, and I enjoy doing all the work on our old cars. But we still have a certain amount that is just for us individually, and it doesn't matter to us if our earning was unequal. :)

Money problems is the biggest cause of divorce. I don’t agree with couples having separate accounts. If you’re joined as one in matrimony then join your finances too. A couple needs that transparency and accountability to each other. Couples together need to make a budget EVERY month. EVERY dollar needs to be allocated to something. My wife and I talk about what is important to each of us and we decide together how to achieve these goals. Get organized. Write it down. We keep a notebook with our budget to remind us what was talked about. Together my wife and I were able to pay off $190k in debt in 4 years. This wasn’t something that just accidentally happened. We did pretty much what this video talks about and decided on our goals together.

On question two: my partner and I have a joint account and our own independent accounts. The joint account is being used for rent, groceries, bills. We also have an additional savings account where we save $1000 per month, and then transfer that to a short term deposit account (time depends on the best interest rate at that time. Current it's 1.85% for 4 months). After that matures, we roll over + add in the money that's been saving up that time (for us that'll be $4000 for that 4 months. That plus the initial amount (add interest gained that goes into that new account). Keeps up independent while also saving up for a goal we both want

Joint+Personal accounts is the way to go. Agree to put a fixed amount in a joint account every month for shared expenses, then invest, pay off debt, spend, etc. from your personal accounts. You retain the ability to decide where the non-joint money goes so there's rarely the need for an argument. Only if you have a situation where one spouse works and one doesn't should you consider just a pure joint account and even then you could agree to a fixed amount that the non-working spouse gets every month to compensate them for managing the house and/or kids. No matter what, always allow for some independence, if you are just lumped in together then every purchase becomes a "well you spend $100, so I get to spend $100" and you either both spend too much or one person becomes resentful of the heavier spender.

A good place to start. However, one complaint. At 5:05, "Save for retirement" is put at #4, after buying a house, starting a business, and paying off student loan debt. Like the majority mentioned at 5:16, I believe saving for retirement should be #1 (even though I did different-- bought house at 19 and started saving for retirement at 21). Start small, but early and often, and you'll be in a much better position than waiting until after everything else happens.
