Nice video. That 'topsoil' looks more like coarse peat, as you had to sieve out some very large pieces. I think the fibrous nature of peat makes a difference to the substrate and the pH of the water.

Remove any dead plants to avoid fouling the water. Tap water with dechlorinator works fine, just make sure the water temperature is close to the aquarium temperature when adding

@DGR aquatics when you have an algae breakout, one or two snails won't solve the problem, you need to remove the cause of the problem (like he did, reduce lighting), and be patient

@infiniity5529
@infiniity5529 4 года назад
Nice video. If there’s fish you should do more water changes. Nothing can replace water changes, even if it’s all planted. With new water you add minerals that were used and also get rid of the hormones etc the fish excrete.
@RegisAquatics
@RegisAquatics 4 года назад
Thanks! I top off using RO water to avoid mineral build up, Im not familiar with the impacts of fish hormones but I will look into that.
@infiniity5529
@infiniity5529 4 года назад
Regis Aquatics I see. Yeah it’s not just the hormones but a lot of other stuff build up in the water over time and a lot of stuff are also used up by the plants. By adding new water you replenish all the good stuff. In the wild it’s different since the volume of water is a lot, there’s new water all the time. Water changes are the best thing you could do for your fish :-D

@RegisAquatics
@RegisAquatics 4 года назад
The plants consume any waste the guppies create, they won’t consume detritus but the other inhabitants do. The green color is from a good light source and sufficient nitrates.

I've got a very similar setup with organic garden soil and just a few tetras. a monstera and a pothos grow roots into the aquarium wich looks pretty wild and natural. there is no need to change water but I have to refill 1/4 once a week. everything perfect with no maintainance over 6 month. 8 firetetras and 3 otocinclus live very happy inside.
@RegisAquatics
@RegisAquatics 4 года назад
A layer of topsoil under the sand and the fish poop in the aquarium is the only form of fertilizer. No additional additives/fertilizers. Only maintenance is refill evaporated water, trimming plants and feeding fish. The plants consume the nitrates the fish create.

Why some people mentioned constantly that injected co2 is needed to keep red plants in an aquarium? Are these marketing lies or what? 🤷
@ZSFries
@ZSFries 4 года назад
Because most red plants needs really high light to keep their reds. High light plants will demand significantly more CO2 due to their rate of photosynthesis. Put super high lighting in a non-CO2 tank and the plants will get stressed out and eventually die ( think of it as forcing a man to do extreme workout plan every day , but providing barely any protein or enough calories for his extreme activity level, he will eventually get worn out, fall sick and die ). Only certain species does not need high light and CO2 injection to keep their red, like red tiger lotus and ludwigia sp. super red. Basically its not a lie, it just true for most species in the hobby, except for a very few exception.
