So glad to see the hainanese Kueh being featured in this episode! If you're a coconut lover then you must try this! As a singaporean hainanese, my grandma used to make these during special occasions (CNY, birthdays)
i really like it how your food vids are really no-frills and straight to the point lol i'm born Taiwanese but i grew up in Singapore. Also, southern indian cuisine in singapore, in dishes where it is supposed to be sweet, it's gonna be HELLA sweet. Their lassi (yogurt drink), teh tarik, kopi tarik, will always be on the sweeter side. heck, a lot of us even eat prata with sugar and sugar only. you should try it sometimes! And yes, Niang toufu is a rarity in both Hong Kong and Taiwan. I've friends in their 40s and up tell me that they miss having it, and they were so glad they could find it in singapore.
i guess Im asking randomly but does anyone know a tool to get back into an Instagram account..? I stupidly forgot the account password. I appreciate any help you can offer me.
@Logan Jalen i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Richard... the Hakka community in Singapore and Malaysia is quite a large one. The Pan mee you had is not genuinely Hakka ... more of a fusion. You may want to look for the real deal. The Niang Tofu again is not served with vermiceli. We Hakkas eat it with hot rice. The niang tofu (in our Hakka Dialect pronounceds as yong tiu-fu) is sauteed is a superior broth that acts as the sauce when we eat with rice. We will garnish with fresh scallions.
You should try the Mr and Mrs Morgan's Super Crispy Roti Prata at 300 Joo Chiat Rd! Their prata is damn crispy and nice but be prepare for a long wait.
okay, here's the thing. for the prata, it's usually crispy when it's out. and THEN, they stack more and more on top and we all know what happens when crispy food doesn't get the air it deserve, it becomes soggy. they do that for a variety of reasons but the main one is the plain prata is the one that sells the fastest and the most, hence they always have some ready in stock. My suggestion is, go for the Egg prata so that you'll always get a freshly made one that's both hot and crispy. Also, fish curry is usually a li'l sour; probably cuz there's some Asam in it.
Well, I like to hv onion prata without egg, love the caramelized onion which is wrapped in it. The sweetness of the onion just go well with the prata, and yes, they freshly make it upon order , like egg prata. So it is slightly crispy outside, soft inside with the fragrant sweet caramelized onion. It goes so well with fish curry or mutton curry😋
Happy Anniversary to Richard and wifey. I stayed in Toa Payoh and I didn’t even knew about the Hainanese Kuey. Thank you for being so adventurous and show us food and places that we wouldn’t normally try!
Love Mr Prata! I’ve frequented it often during late night outs with friends as it’s 24/7 and it’s in close proximity to the town area. ☺️ Bai Nian YTF is my family’s favourite, I’m so glad you included this in your recommendations!
I'm a S'porean living overseas. There's nothing that comes close to the taste of Palm Sugar that you had in the desserts in Southeast Asia. So yummy. I hope you tried Pepper Crab before you returned to Taiwan.
Can consider using a foam or fur cover for your microphone so that it will minimise the noises in the background outdoor, just subscribe for your channel and great work
I say less sugar every time, but I guess the hawkers are used to serving sweet tooths. The soy milk lady had the liquid sugar in the cup before I'd even finished ordering. Impressive speed! I didn't want to break her heart and make another drink!
Hi there, can you truthfully tell me, does Singapore preserve its heritage well? This is quite important for me because I am planning on moving there and I am worried I will find it's one big shopping mall. This video gave me hope that it is not the case.
I would say in the city there is quite a lot of preserved heritage, but quite a bit has gone too because of the rapid development. But there are also a lot of shopping malls.
The 353 Clementi Food Centre corner 3 stall facing the car park serves the BEST Plain Prata with the MUTTON gravy but you will have to tell the owner you want he prata more crispy especially if you want egg with prata
9:35 海南薏粑, Hainanese Yi Bua, Ingredients are coconut sugar, shredded coconut, pandan leaves, glutinous rice flour, peanut powder, sesame, ginger, oil, salt, banana leaves, Put in the steamer and steam for 12 minutes,
Why is Beauty World a bizarre name? It used to be a fancy family weekend hangout for kampong people living in Lim Chu Kang and Chua Chu Kang ........ 30-40 years ago......
Hi again... the lady probably wanted to "treat" you becos in truth we don't see many expats exploring our local food lest daring to head to the hawker centres, which is a shame, since when we head over to Europe, we treat food equally as important in our "to do" itinerary. (I have met British tourists complaining that they didn't travel all the way to Singapore to eat "Chinese food"...) It's not everyday that such a gesture is extended to non-locals so count your blessings! You can order drinks with a "LESS SUGAR" request: I prefer my soy milk cold without any sugar.
4:03 May I suggest anyone the "镖记-鱼汤“ at Amoi Hawker center should they ever visit Singapore. I think they have one of the freshest fish, with a super long queue too. Drop by after 1.30pm or before 12pm definitely helps. (Close on Sunday if my memory serves me correct)
Fried fish is normally dory fish. For slice fish, some uses 生鱼?not raw but I think is those pond water fish.... another kind used batang fish which is considered sea - deep water fish? So batang is normally preferred because it doesn’t have the muddy n fishy smell. Those stir fried Chinese stalls, their fishes used in 三捞鱼河粉 are usually 生鱼。。。fishy fishy Prata u can always tell them u want more crispy n they will add more oil n cook longer to have the crispy skin.... Does teh tarik has sugar? I also ordered less sweet but always still very sweet!!!!!
18 years...It's been a long time. We had our anniversary meal at Block 307 Serangoon Avenue 2, one of the best in town. Kim San Lou at Bishan also good! I miss the days when I was in Singapore.
@@AsiaHikelopedia The shop in Everton Park is Ji Xiang confectionary. Go there in the early afternoon so that you have gamut of choices with different ingredients. You may not get many varieties if you are there too early, as they need time to prepare and steam. Neither will you have many choices if you are there too late, as demand is high and furious. Situation may be different now due to Covid and weak economy. Good luck.
Thanks for sharing 🇸🇬 food experience. My wife is from Singapore and we live in Vancouver, 🇨🇦. We would like if u have time to try Hainanese CHICKEN rice. Char Kuey Teow. Pineapple Fried Rice and Satay @ Satay Club. (If it is still existed) Happy Anniversary!
If you like kueh, there are many variety from different dialect groups with its own speciality. Teochew kueh, Ang ku kueh, nonya kueh to name a couple. Bangawan solo is the famous local Indonesian kuch brand in Spore though the prices keep rising.
Hi, this is my first time to be here and also decide to follow your video at the same time. I really like your style. Congratulations and may God bless you all in Singapore.
that crab meal is real expensive. but it should be very yummy. years ago i have tried 1 crab meal at red house by the singapore river. it costed me about s$80. so the price must has hiked alot after these years.
Actually, at most of the stall in Singapore, when you order food or drink, you can ask for less sugar, less salt, or even kosong (no sugar)! Is up to your choices!
@@AsiaHikelopedia Only 50%!? I always hit it by 100%! another thing i did like to mention is the part you shooting the 百年酿豆腐 ( Bai Nian Yong Tau Foo) the focus point was not on you but next table beside you! 😅
I often to Clark Quay. There is a Taiwanese restaurant 青葉。they are a bit expensive, but food is nice and the most important is the home flavor. :) Prata itself is good, but often the Indian curry is too spicy for me. The 粿 looks nice, maybe next time visit SG, I will try.
Nice video! You should order "Teh C Kosong" for tea with evaporated milk and no sugar. I always drink that, it's not sweet and really nice! For the soya bean drink, they add syrup to the drink, so you could ask for less sweet or even no syrup.
Thanks for the tip! I say less sugar every time, but I guess the hawkers are used to serving sweet tooths. The soy milk lady had the liquid sugar in the cup before I'd even finished ordering. Impressive speed! I didn't want to break her heart and ask her to make another drink!
Roti prata by default if you don't request, the curry that they will serve you with is dhal curry. Slight sourish curry is the fish version. I think the ban mian is not exactly fish soup is just the usual ban mian with choice of fish slices. Everytime I see postings of the Hainanese Yi Bua I will think about my grandmother's. She used to make it sooo often and at such a huge volume till we were sick of eating it. But now, I miss hers! Oh man. Hers was soo flavourful, she used to make it to pass time and sell it to the wet market stall holders.
Your videos are really good and really entertaining! They give me some good ideas of where to visit and grab a bite when I visit S'pore. Keep them coming!
You were at where my father in law's store - Beauty World Niang Re Gao (娘惹糕). Those are Peranakan's food.... I'm sure you know you need to cover these food.. :)
Chuan Kee Boneless Braised Duck - Ghim Moh Market and Food Centre Ivy’s Hainanese Herbal Mutton Soup - Pasir Panjang Food Centre Yan Ji Seafood Soup - Far East Plaza Sik Bao Sin - 592 Geylang Rd, Lor 36 Geylang Tan Ser Seng Herbs Restaurant (Chicken & Turtle Soup) - No. 29A Lorong Bachok New eateries for you
Toa Payoh... pronounce like To-Ah Pa Yoh , To-Ah need to be short. Actually this is exactly pronounce same as Du-a, 大 in Taiwanese. For the Chili Crab, actually there is another good and cheap also good to try nearby, it's at Casuarina Road, Ban Leong Wah Hoe, their price slightly cheaper and I prefer their taste that won't so sweet compare to Melben. Some more Melben always long queue!!!
Yes, Niang Tofu is a Hakka dish. I’m a Hakka, but the place where i came from, Sarawak, Borneo, we fill up tofu with minced pork that was pre-fried with the 5-spice powder (五香粉)and then deep-fry the tofu with hot oil. The fried niang tofu will then be served by wrapping it with fresh lettuce and is to be eaten without soup. Nowadays, people are getting more and more creative, instead of filling up tofu with pork, they fill up veges with meat, e.g. fill up lady’s fingers with pork, fill up one whole red chilli with fish meat, etc. and served them with soup. Probably you should try out these food if you have a chance to visit Sarawak. 😄 Toa is pronounced as “Dwa” just liked how you would pronounce the word “大” in Taiwanese 閩南語。 p/s: be it in Singapore or Malaysia, teh tarik will forever be very sweet no matter how many times you have told them to be less sweet...😂. I like crispy prata too! 😄
For ur info we still got mutton soup , beef noodle, turtle soup, mee rebus , mee siam, tahu goreang ,hakka 擂茶,安邦酿豆腐,curry fish head, Roti john, curry mutton , (rice wine chicken or prawn(home made hakka only)hakka 酿豆腐 )cant find on market going to extinct soon cos woman dun cook nowdays, and lots more for u to explore
I had chili crab twice in my 6 years in SG. Not too impressed, especially for the price. I've eaten crabs in NY, SF, Beijing, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and SG; I have to say the most delicious is the Salt & Pepper Dungeness Crab in SF (R&G Lounge). The 2nd best is the Stir-fried Blue Crab in New York (Hop Kee).
Advice to you... Next time eat the crab bee hoon soup first before the chili crab. If you start with the chili crab first, the strong chili flavor will overpower the mild taste of the other. Also, props to you for making fun of your anniversary. You must like to live life dangerously!
If you like crispy prata, you can get it from Fairprice, and just heat it up over a stove, slow heat and then crisp it over a quick high heat. Crispy and nice!
