5 Most Common Faults on Used RVs!!

Today I have a DIFFERENT kind of "Top 5" for you!
These are the Top 5 places I check RIGHT AWAY when looking at a Used RV.
I've been climbing in, on, and under used RVs for over a dozen years now. In that time I've seen some truly deserving the name "like used" and some that are absolutely Handyman's specials and beyond. While there are certainly sometimes MFG build oversights which can lead to some issues the owners themselves are almost exclusively THE single greatest and most influential factor in the lifespan of an RV.
In this video I point out a few key areas and items I try to quickly eyeball when assessing a used RV before taking photos and recording our video tours. This is by no means intended to be "THE ONLY GUIDE YOU NEED FOR USED RVS" or anything like that. Rather, I'm providing this information purely as a courtesy to potential buyers out there who may not have full trust in the dealership or even private owner from which they're buying.
I also never claim to be perfect and absolutely recommend using the information in this video when reviewing an RV we may offer for sale ourselves. I'm pretty good at spotting things but often my job requires me to move quickly and I cannot catch every single thing on every single used travel trailer, fifth wheel, pop up, or motorhome that comes into our inventory here.
If you'd like to see what used RVs we have in stock any time, then please take a look at bit.ly/3aNRaUH

I saved a buddy from making a bad decision on a Jayco Hummingbird last year. The seller had detailed the crap out of it, shiny tires and all, but I saw the “pimples” (braille) below the front side window, plus the ceiling flexed when you pushed on it. If I wasn’t there to advise him, he would have bought it.

I showed up to look at a used RV and got a ladder out of my truck, and the seller said, oh your serious. I said, I am not necessarily serious yet, but wanted to evaluate if I should be serious or not. Turned out it was not a winner. Thanks for the tips, great information for those that are not super prepared.

I wanted to leave an update on my rv after watching this video. We bought a used 2014 wild cat about a month after this video. Out the door price with cash and had enough leftover for a few repairs. No water damage. So i decided to reseal the roof. Well actually I resealed the entire rv including windows, doors, and anything attached to the outside. Ended up replacing slideout rubber. Could not find anything major wrong. Just kept checking everything. Even the tank sensors worked. Just to good to be true was what I was saying. After all these months now and a few trips we had water running down the bedroom wall right below the cap. Heavy rain storm. So I gutted that wall. It appears it has leaked a small amount for a while. So I'm repairing during this winter. The leak turned out to be the antenna. So it's gone. I just wanted to say thanks for these types of videos. We would have never looked for used had it not been for this and 1 other video you made about buying used. Thanks again Josh for what you do

It remains a mystery to me that with all the advancements they have made with laminated aluminum & fiberglass walls, the roof is still vinyl over plywood with a bunch of caulking. The floor inside the RV is just as weather proof as the roof. You'd think they would have come up with a better system by now, given that the roof is the most important component of any structure after the foundation.

After retirement I planned on engaging in the RV lifestyle for a long time. 2 weeks of this RV retirement journey was spent attending the RV Inspection Course being taught at the National RV Training Academy in Athens, Texas. Well worth the time and $$ as I now have good knowledge about the opportunities and challenges of these vehicles. It also opened my eyes to the industry practices and all that means. I stayed 2 weeks to learn to be a Level 2 certified inspector. My thoughts, if you are going to be a long time RV'er get some education about the RV's and the industry. Well worth it.

@@iair-conditiontheoutsideai3076 Agreed. I've owned most all of those. Metal you are only concerned with seals around AC's ,vents, etc. Rubber roofs are the least expensive and have a limited life expectancy. I replaced one at exactly 12 years. The unit I bought was used. I like fiberglass also. Our current Wandelodge has an aluminum roof that is riveted to the bus.

Great honest video and so true. I used to farm and rented out a shed to a RV repair shop. 2/3 of their work was damage from ingress of water. Roof is Number one problem as described. Should be checked yearly and re-sealed with professional mastic. This is often with gummy mastic which always remains sticky or a very high quality professional polyurethane sealant. Problems on roofs often start when they have been walked on causing cracking of sealant. On sides problems often occur when after market things like bike racks have been bolted on. If you can borrow a meter for detecting moisture on walls, take it with you. To fix these problems, all the inside has to be ripped out and rotten wood replaced. When constructed wood is never treated prior to installation and is usually cheap so rots easily. Repair cost is never cheap, starting at $1000 upwards and you can end up with a bill for more than RV/camper is worth... Have seen this happen many times which is gut wrenching for customers, so buyer be VERY aware!...

Our 2007 Wildwood 27RB was Totaled out by two Shops for rear corner bottom under floor water damage. Under the 2/3 Bath and opposite Bunk Corner. It ruined some wood underneath. Was Black and pulp. Structurally not good. Was told $9K damage. No Shop would touch it. Nobody could figure out where water got in or came from. I resealed the roof ends and corners every year like you showed. Around Any other roof item. Even Clearance Lights all around. Nobody figured it out and then it was so bad it had to be pulled off the road. Was only 4 years old. My Insurance paid out $9500. Current value at the time. We never replaced it. Had my Dad’s F-250 and 5th wheel for a year, but had to sell as part of his Estate. Then I had a Stroke. So now 5 years later not sure yet I could physically deal with all the Setup/Teardown activities. Load on wife mostly. She’s Not wanting that. I’ve still got the Bug. Lots of Hoteling this past year. It's a sign of good leadership I think. We often forget the experiences we have at the individual level commonly reflect the practices, teachings, and values of the facility's leadership team. I consider myself fortunate to have received good mentoring We've had various team members come aboard here from other places who were of the impression doing things like telling a customer to go get a new credit card to cover a down payment was "normal operating practices for all dealerships" & shocked to learn we don't and WON'T do that kind of stuff. I've never worked at another dealership so I don't know any differently I guess. But little moments like that really make me value and appreciate my team here.

One place we have learned to check with a used RV is the floor of the Slide out itself. Some manufacturers use a woven tarp material on the bottom outside of the slide. This material is not really waterproof when you get the big down pores when the slide is out. The slideouts should have a drip edge to prevent water working it's way into the underside of the wood flooring. We've seen this on a number of units we have gone to look at. Certain manufacturers use a solid water proof material under the slides with a drip edge to prevent this. There are a few youtube videos that demonstrate the problem. Thank you for showing the ugly side of poor maintenance.

Removing a screw from the upper and lower corners of the camper trim strip and finding it rusted is also a good sign to either run or negotiate a better price. Also, if you are finding ants in your RV, you probably have a leak as the ants also need moisture to survive, Personal experience where I learned a lot about how cheaply campers are made. DYI repairs are a learning experience and heighten your awareness if potential issues.

We purchased a used motor home knowing that we would have the engine checked, replace tires, and possibly problems with plumbing because they had NEVER winterize the unit after moving from the south to the Northwest. It was winter when we purchased and first time out the AC died in both the roof unit and the engine, couldn't shower because the inside water heater line had a crack in it, and the black tank was full of pyramids. But for the very low miles on it and the price we still came out okay with all the repairs and thank goodness no body leaks it has a lifetime roof seal.

The roof separated from the front cap of my new 30ft travel trailer. Warranty work. I got it to the dealer I bought it from. They had it for the whole camping season. Their repair attempts were nowhere near acceptable. I contacted Coachman. I explained the situation. The representative was really surprised by the defect and more disappointed at the dealers' handling of the defect and quality of repairs. They charged the dealer in Illinois to ship my travel trailer to the factory in Indiana to get it fixed correctly and shipped back to them. Thank Coachman! ❤😊

Josh, you missed a huge red flag, DELAMINATION! When you were describing the problems in that outside compartment the delamination was so noticeable, I can’t believe you didn’t mention it. People need to know when a camper starts to delaminate it’s a very costly fix, and if it’s not properly fixed it will spread. I would walk away from that camper fast! Also removing screws and looking for rust is another good tip. All in all a very good video, thanks for taking the time to make it.

I guess I should've specifically mentioned. I figured when people could see the obvious delam and discussing leaks the dots would be connected But I REALLY appreciate the feedback. Sometimes you can't see the forest from the trees and really should step back to take an outsider's perspective. Please keep that constructive info coming :)

I've sold 8 or 9 RV's in my lifetime so far and it's critical to be honest in your ad because most who look at your RV will see the problem you failed to mention, then there's an issue of trust. I specify any problem areas in the ad and mention that I've tried to put in the good as well as the bad. It's appreciated.

Great video and information. Josh pretty much showed how small leaks in the roof can result in water damage practically everywhere. Love how he talks about the 4 corners and why they can become vulnerable due to stress and movement. Unfortunately most times on older RV's when there is potential for water damage, it's like peeling back an onion. It gets bigger and bigger and bigger. You can't even estimate what the cost to fix it all correctly will be. If I saw water damage on a used RV I was thinking of purchasing, I would have to move on no matter how low the price is.

Uncle Josh - what a fantastic service you've provided with this video! In the past I have purchased two cheap pop-up campers with EVERY ONE of your top five, thinking I would fix them. They were not cheap enough - in fact, I put so much time and materials into them they ended up costing more than a new pop-up. I'm echoing previous posters by saying "If you see any of these issues in a used RV that you're looking at, RUN!"

You make the perfect reason for getting a 'pro' to inspect the RV before you get hosed for a rolling pile of crap that you will lose thousands of dollars on, unless one has watched this video. In that gem you were going thru, looks like at about 7:30 or so the side wall above the storage compartment door and under the window look like some delamination going on as well. That roof leak at the ladder really did a number on that one.
