Great advice as always Ilana. We were hit with the “im your waiter” scam in Cozumel, but knew our waiters well so didnt fall for it. Second time in Europe variation “Im a waiter in your hotel!” We laughed because we were on a cruise not hotel! I dont respond to anybody trying to talk to me about anything on streets. best defense is Dont stop, say No and keep walking.

This is why I always request the same server when on a cruise. On my last trip, we had a tiny Filipina lady so if a man came up to me pulling this scam, I could've just laughed in his face lol.

I was not on a cruise when this happened but we were approached by someone who said that they were our waiter. He told us his parents had a shop. We did go into the shop and actually found something that we were looking for. The next night it happened again and we knew it was a scam. We asked oh what ship? Well he couldn’t tell us. So ask the question like what ship or what restaurant or time. Now some of these people look for a tag, or a bracelet or something with the ships name on it so if they get the ship name ask for more details. Also NEVER accept a flower from someone handing them out they are marking you for their buddy to pick pocket you! This happens a lot in Europe.

Yes! I never take anything from anyone. If you take the flower, the bracelet, the necklace, etc now they try to sell something to you. Or hassle you for not wanting to buy.

In Morocco, there would be girls who would come up to you without asking and try to paint a fake tattoo (henna) then ask for money; walk away before they get a chance/cover arms and move away quickly.

I was on NCL 2 years ago and got sick at a port in Spain. I went to the cruise infirmary. They were excellent. They can handle many medical situations. Being a medical professional, I could tell by the treatment room/observing the equipment it was top notch as was the physician. Be prepared to pay on your credit card for care. I had travel insurance and made a claim. I received full reimbursement. They provided all the documents to my state room that were necessary to make the claim. It is frightening to be out of your country and ill. Fortunately the ships facility could handle it. ;)

Well, I was not so lucky. ON NCL, We were set to disembark the very next morning at 6:00 am.I went to guest services that evening to confirm and they said paperwork would be there BEFORE WE DISEMBARKED. well no such luck, In fact we were delayed docking because some F up in the port we were supposed to dock at. finally at 8:00 am we were cleared to dock, well our tour had already left that were supposed to meet in port. My travel insurance would not cover this "delay" because of "extentuating circumstances wtf is that ? so they did not plan for their arrival, isn't called "delayed" under the travel reimbursement?,

That private messaging scam is trying to find out what cruise you're going on... then they look up the dates you'll be gone, and if you told the person where you're from there's a risk your house will be robbed by one of their team of scammers.

My mom and I were approached by someone claiming to be our waiter while we were in Costa Maya. We weren't sure, to be honest, and we're both friendly people, so we kinda went with it for a second. When he asked us come back to his family's jewelry shop the gig was up and we both left.

I would think due to the shear volume of guests on board and multiple cruises, the waiter would be less likely to recognize guests as opposed to the guests recognizing them.

That “I’m your waiter” scam is also used on people who go to all inclusive resorts. Since you are wearing a wrist band you are basically wearing a sign to advertise that you are a tourist and which hotel/cruise ship you are on.

There are good and bad people everywhere. Bad people target tourists to scam them. Not only in Mexico. It happens everywhere. You can look it up here in yt, scam in Rome, Paris...too. Cheer up and don't feel bad 😅

Dont feel bad! I know several Mexican natives and I do not hold that against peope. Tourist areas are magnets for scams. We had an incident with a cab. That has been the only time and we have been cruising for years.

Medical emergencies are best dealt with through the cruise line as they have a duty of care for you. If you need immediate major surgery they will be able to facilitate that indirectly even if the ship needs an unscheduled port stop.

The duck scam is alive and well! Someone was “got” by it in one of my roll calls about a month ago. I am a first time cruiser, and so didn’t realize either until the kind person who sent her (if it was a her) money posted that she had learned it was a scam. I also don’t really have any interest in ducks, so I wasn’t the target mark for that. But we are doing a back to back, so I am glad to say that I did call out the same person when I realized she was in the second rollcall as well. Her posts disappeared within a couple of hours after that. I super appreciate all tips like this. It’s a valuable public service, thank you!

When I went to Jamacia you really had to watch out for young boys walking along beside you and then when you reached your destination they would say pay me money since I guided you. So when we went anywhere after that we would shoo them away or make it plain we were not paying for their companionship.

We always snap a pic of the port agent info on the daily planners. We also have an annual travel medical policy and medical evacuation policy. Just in Case.

Unless I'm cruising in southeast Asia, it's pretty unlikely that anybody in the port was working as my waiter on the cruise ship. The only time I've seen people from Mexico working in public-facing roles on cruise ships were cast members in the entertainment staff on Disney Cruise Line. Also, the dining room staff probably aren't in port with you. They're on the ship working their butts off in some dining venue all day every day - open your eyes! If the main dining room isn't open for lunch on a port day, they're probably working in the buffet. People who pay attention and actually talk to the crew and ask them about themselves would never fall for that first one.

EXACTLY. While I appreciate Illana pointing out these scams and she had great info in her videos, I think a person has to be a bit of a ditz to fall for this particular scam....but then people are on vacation and not paying attention to their surroundings,etc etc so I guess it's possible.

It's happening on cell phones too!!! I got "Are you working today"? My response: Detective ----- is always working. What do you want." She came back with this is Julie, is this Lisa's phone? blah blah blah. Turned out to be a ISO from the Phillipines. She asked me to "investigate" a woman and sent me a picture. She then said it was actually her. I told her I know. Didn't hear from her again. BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!

Good info, and I have had a woman contact me on Facebook asking when my next cruise was and then asked to be my friend (I never do that, married 42 years for a reason) I never replied and the lady deleted all messages, now I know why.

In case of an emergency in port you should always contact the port agent. The number is always in the daily planner.

I would also warn the gentlemen about another romance scam. I met this lady roughly thirty years ago, dated her, bought her drinks, took her to multiple dinners.... And now, here we are 30 years later, and she won't leave me alone. Worse, she owns half my stuff. Watch out fellas. It's a trap!

We had the waiter scam 10 years ago when we were staying at a resort in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. He did want to take us to his "family's" jewelry store. They can tell which resort you are staying at, because you wear a bracelet with the name of the resort. We did go to the store but did not buy anything. He was extremely pushy and very convincing.

I think it is a new take on a romance scam and they just try to reach as many women as possible. Stay savvy ladies!

We had a reverse thing happen to a passenger. He had fallen down the bus stairs and made a mess of his leg. When they went to the medical center the doctor said he’d have to be cleared by a hospital on shore. The wife insisted that that wasn’t happening for a simple first aid treatment: no stitches even thought about. It wasn’t that doctor insisted someone be cleared by a shore hospital! I’m hoping there were enough complaints that she never practices again, at least not on a cruise ship! She also, refused to provide the medical records for anyone that was treated by the medical center. The cruise director even was turned down several times too!

@@CL-mp4vn I believe that was the Journey. The company was in transition from having been sold so I have no idea who chose the contractor. After she said she didn’t answer to anyone but the Captain the only reaction we could muster was “wow”! The other passengers were a travel agent and her retired from Carnival husband. I can assure you the cruise director wasn’t happy with the response she got either! I’m pretty sure that that person has not been rehired by the cruise line and theirs a good chance the contractor isn’t either, if there is another choice. For that cruise we had the luxury of being a bit port intensive such that we could get real help on shore! But, there are still emergencies that need stabilizing on the ship.

I got scammed in Playa del Carmen with the “hi, I was your waiter!”, but I was staying at an all-inclusive resort and not a cruise. I did end up buying a bracelet that I didn’t necessarily want and probably overpaid for it.

That is perplexing since the majority of the crew staff are Filipino and not allowed to interact with guests in port. Since many time they disembark way agter the guests do.

Yes, was asked this exact question ‘how long have you been cruising for?’ in a Pacific Encounter cruise ship Facebook group. I felt uncomfortable and luckily just ignored him as I thought this was just the beginning of a romance scam as they happen all the time.

While on St Lucia...one of the tour buses was involved in a crash. the passengers did go back to the ship.. for relatively minor injuries... The driver and tour guide went to the hospital.

I never realized that the emergency phone number for the cruise line was on the cruise card. I just pulled out an old card and sure enough, it was there. I’ve also been told to take a picture of the local contact/phone number that is on the cruise compass before getting off the ship on a port day.

Make sure that you aren’t wearing your cruise lanyard, WOW band, or resort bracelet when out and about the ports and towns. That is an easy way to get targeted for the “Don’t you remember me?” ploy.

Hello, llana 😀 I was contacted by the man in your video in a Facebook group for solo cruisers. Same photos, same profile, with a different name. Maybe I was naive, but I started talking to him on Messenger. I asked, pretty fast, if he would send me a very short video so I could see that he was an honest man. He just joked about it, so luckily, my instincts were just to ignore him. He called a few times on Messenger without me answering, and suddenly, he was gone. His profile and his comments in the Facebook group were gone too. Thank you so much for bringing this up 💗

I was your waiter is also a scam in Playa Mexico. Some of the resorts give a wrist band . The scammer says they work at the resort.

I did have the stranger asking me about my cruise and then questioning more. I told him it was rude and invasive and I blocked him. Then same photo but different name tried to friend me a week later. This is why I don’t friend anyone I don’t already know

I pocket my card when I leave the ship to avoid many approaches. Figure out where you are going before you get off the ship. If you are walking with intent, they are less likely to approach you.

Also seen this as a "Don't you remember me from "insert resort name here". Guess where they are getting the resort name from - the branded bags, wristbands, etc. Be aware folks.

Another suspicious situation I have come across on the Facebook Roll Calls is someone posing as the parent selling cruise themed items that their special-needs child has designed, encouraging you to support their child by buying these items. Maybe not a scam, but considering I have seen this on three Facebook groups, I'm guessing it's not genuine.

Yeah, I see that crap all the time and people fall all over themselves trying to be supportive. When I say it's a scam they tell me how awful I am and ask if I was abused as a child. As a matter of fact, I was. Maybe that's why I'm skeptical and can smell be a mile away.

Definitely great advice (as always!) Ilana! 😊The medical issue in particular stood out. I actually did have a fall when off the ship in Santorini and didn’t know what to do. 😮 Was quite badly hurt and just figured I would get back to the ship, but it took a few hours, in severe pain. 😞

As you said, never ever give money ahead of time for a slot pull! We like to attend them and we usually organize one each time we cruise. People literally hand you the cash and watch you feed the machine. It’s fun and we all sometimes win a little or walk away with at least some of our contribution. We are attending a couple on our upcoming cruise. It’s a fun way to meet people especially if you organize a little gathering ahead of time to meet each other. Someone on our FB group tried to collect the money ahead of time. Ummm…nope!

Try doing a reverse image search for these romance scammers pictures of “themselves”. I had one (not a cruise one, just a generic romance scam) who was using images of Paul Hollywood (celebrity baker and Co-host of Great British Bake Off) 😂

Please be careful, if I see him around you on another cruise I will know that you fell for it! Seriously, with the internet these days I am constantly being bombarded by people that want money or they want to meet up or just about anything that can be imagined. Ilana, I know that he's your son and that he is an integral part of your successful and growing business. You all are doing an amazing job and it must take a lot of research to constantly come out with original and interesting videos. So many channels these days are all the same and it's really obvious when they are always saying that everything is always so amazing.

I can attest the medical facility on board the team is awesome. Once my daughter stepped on a sea urchin and we took her to medical. They said you can't take the stingers out, poured peroxide over her foot to help break them down and asked if we needed Ibuprofen to help with the pain and reduce swelling. Thankfully I always carry peroxide and Ibuprofen and they didn't charge us. The next time we needed them was when my husband had an A-Fib incident. Awesome care, they have great equipment and supplies. My husband, who is a medic for the fire dept, said they were better than a lot of urgent care/er local places. AND they don't charge you an arm and a leg out of pocket. It was seriously less month then walking in to an ER locally. Which leads me to CRUISE INSURANCE for medical costs. If you incur a medical expense on board, that is out of pocket and trying to get reimbursement from your health carrier is not easy. Trip insurance is SO much easier and not that expensive honestly.

sorry I do not agree, while their medical team may be awesome, wait until you get the bill. My wife's bill was $4351.00 for tests I had NO say in. Then I had to pay before i could leave the ship.. Can we say extortion?? what company would HOLD YOU HOSTAGE??? it is a corrupt system.

My husband and I were on the NCL Breakaway for Christmas and when we stopped in Cozumel we experienced the very scam you mentioned. We were walking along when a guy walked up to us and said, “Hi, remember me, I was your waiter last night?” We didn’t remember him and tried walking away when he said his family has a shop just down the street and we need to stop in and take a look. We had a gut feeling something wasn’t right and told him we had to go and kept saying no as he insisted. He finally gave up and walked around the corner.

Walk away; it's best if you're a group or couple to agree on this beforehand because for example the wife might be wise to the scam, but the husband might stand there and listen.

I've seen an upswing in the FB Groups re: people who Google cruise phone number and don't get it from the Official cruise site. Telling people that gratuity is WAY more than it really is. Also, The slot pull scam.

Hey, I know that guy! He is the prince of Zimbabwe and he sent me an email asking for $5,000 because he had to file some paperwork to claim his father's fortune and ascend to the throne but his opposition is trying to keep him from that but he said that he would send me $100,000 in return once his rights as the rightful heir to the throne has been restored and he once again has access to his inheritance. 🤞🤞🤞😁

I admin a page and had the slot pull scam on mine. I messed around with the poster saying I was interested and getting more info and then banned them. It was fun. Lol

Our FB roll call page just got hit with the slot pull scam. Luckily the person was smart enough to let the admin of the page know when the person ask for the money up front. So we were able to get they off the page. So yes this scam is out there. We also have had the t-shirt one a few times.

I actually had the waiter scam but ‘the waiter’ was ACTUALLY our waiter at a local all-inclusive resort. If I remember correctly, there was actually another one that was our shuttle bus helper from the airport in Cancun years ago that we also came in contact with in Playa del Carmen, who saw us and invited us in to a “family“ shop. I didn’t mind since I knew from previous experience that, that is common due to life’s circumstances.

I've seen the Facebook scam you mentioned. It was a "20-year-old woman" telling me i was cute, and asking if she could cruise with me. A. I'm married, happily married. B. I'm 66. Come on, be real. I blocked the scammer.
