This is a video about some of the ways you can create complex and musically interesting patterns using simple step sequencers. It features the Sebsongs Polyseq: a three-track, 12HP module that’s based around the classic SH-101-style step sequencing technique.
It’s a DIY kit available from Thonk, who very kindly sent this one over along with the Sebsongs Sampler, which I did a video about recently, and the Euclidean module, which is a three-channel gate pattern generator.
Although the Polyseq makes some of the techniques I’m about to show you very quick and easy, you can do everything here using other sequencers too, so hopefully you’ll get some ideas to try with whatever gear you’re using.

Brilliant stuff. In particular, I liked the voice hocketing using the Euclidian seq. And your 1990s/2000s house vibes are just gorgeous.

Always full of good ideas. The syncopation between Moscwa and Plaits was great.

I really like that polymetric sample & hold technique. Has a nice balance of variation & eventual repetition. I imagine it has quite a lot of scope for further rhythmic variation by changing up the euclidean pattern. With a bit of delay that was getting really tasty! Would be interesting to try S&H/quantizing the output of a Turing machine in the same fashion. Or running multiple patterns into the switch, and S&H the output from that.

Thanks! Yeah, it's just the tip of the iceberg really eh? It's fun playing around with different combinations of source sequence length and rhythm pattern length. I've done something similar with the Turing Machine too and can confirm it's also great, especially if you occasionally slightly 'unlock' a TM pattern and re-lock...

Neat little sequencer that! Could think of a few parings with that like something like S&H, Marbles, or Turing Machine etc. I do like that input.

Yeah, it could be quite a cool way of recording happy accidents from the Turing Machine! Need to try that out.

I would really like one of those Sebsongs Euclidean sequencers, but I cannot solder at all, and I’ve never seen one for sake as a ‘built’ module. Any bright ideas?

You could ask in here maybe? www.modwiggler.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=207251 Or learn to solder! ;) It’s not hard, honestly, and will open up a whole world of DIY fun…

@@TomChurchillThank you! I have asked… At my age learning to solder is not really an option- and I dread to think how many modules i’d have to bin before getting a whole one assembled correctly!

@@walrtbstudios5430 grab some Electronics Soldering kits, or low price/risk DIY hardware to practice on! Look over the component list of this Sebsongs module (and any future builds) & specifically look for a soldering kit that contains the same component types, pin types & soldering techniques! (SMT vs THT, hotswap sockets & headers, flat pins vs round pins, any tricky footprints, heat sensitive components?) It's all WAY more stressful-seeming than it really is before you learn! Just pay attention to your heating times.

@@walrtbstudios5430I’m an experienced builder based in Surrey and fellow Border Terrier owner/lover and might be able to help you 😊 I don’t have an account at Modwiggler but I’ll set one up and we can discuss further over there.

So good but I just can’t get my head around step sequencing. Maybe the world needs a 3-channel Moskwa.

Now that would be something - I'm seriously considering a second one!
