Rivaling France is always a good idea as Austria because if Castille/Spain also rivals them without rivalling you, they're missing an heir, and Austria + Castille/Spain have a Royal Marriage, then there's an event that can get a Habsburg on the Castillan/Spanish throne which you may eventually get a PU over later on. It's not as guaranteed as the other PUs in this video, but it's definitely worth keeping an eye on their heir and rival situation to be ready to throw a RM at them.

the fort that's to the right of Praha, can't remember the province, is kept at no maintenance if you keep your troops 1 province away from bohemian border. essentially you can selanik that bitch when you do the declaration.

It's very very important that the absolute first thing you do with a diplomat before unpausing is RM Burgundy. One day later and they have no slots left and will refuse.

If i remember right you also get a 50% off level 2 improve relations advisor right from the start too

As of 1.32, it seems AE modifiers have been significantly adjusted for the Austrian mission tree. PU'ing Bohemia and Hungary in rapid succession as described here led to a nearly immediate total HRE coalition against me; even with Burgundy, Castile and my client states, I'm severely outmatched. This with all the extra diplo+improve relations% I can muster in 1451. And fighting off an opportunistic Poland that wanted to grab Hungarian lands from under me.

That Kalenberg Battle came pretty earlier than expected... And you won without winged hussars arriving That's insane man!!

Amazing guide. Just a few more OP PUs to keep in mind. Spain is very OP partner, as you get the colonies. Just make sure both of you rival france. And delay it a bit, to make sure they get colonial ideas and have fired the Iberian wedding. If you are very lucky, you might get Naples, Castille, and Aragon, all with just one marriage. If Naples is independent, thats fine as well because you get a PU cb on them after you take over Milan. Just wait till they form Two Sicilies though, as it has better military ideas. Opening move should always be to ally Burgundy first, as they only have 1 free diplo slot at the start. Followed by an obvious RM. Bavaria also eventually forms and you get a PU cb on them, just make sure to make them an elector before the war. Also keep in mind, for Austria, your biggest threats are the French and Ottomans. Picking fights with the French once you get your main PUs and are waiting for the Ottoman truce, is a good idea. Though it will make the game extremely easy and a bit boring late game. Since frankly Austria is completely broken. Another less annoying but still unignorable threat is Scandanavia. If you can land the Commonwealth as a PU, then you get a very good jump off point to eat them. Other tips (from my own experience), I think the shadow kingdom is just a pain in the ass a waste of resources. It takes too much precious time and AE management to keep them in line, that I just abandon it. Your efforts are better suited to just eat Venice and then leave Italy alone for a while till you have pacified the Ottomans.

Great guide! Having never played Austria or in the HRE before myself, it inspired me to give it a try. Worked fantastically. Except I had no idea about HRE mechanics so I stuffed my IA up a bit. But it doesn't matter because I'm so huge and strong AE just doesn't matter anymore. So far it's 1577 I'm way ahead on all techs and have 2015 dev plus my subjects have 868 dev. Inherited Bohemia and Burgundy. Integrated Hungary. Current subjects are Byzantium(all cores) Bulgaria, Bourbannais, Bavaria, Aubergine, Aquileia, Champagne, Crimea and Milan. 11 diplo relations slots and +9 diplo rep. Made Ottomans and France release several nations. Finished first colony in Columbia and building second one in west Africa which has been left completely uncolonised for me. The AI island hopped to the Cape and then focused on the Americas only. Have 250k manpower and force limit of 248. Subjects have 66k troops. Idea groups I went were Diplomatic > Innovative > Defensive > Expansion. Focussing now on gaining IA by converting the heretics and releasing new tags in the empire my IA has stagnated for decades. Passed only the first four reforms so far. Have my dynasty on Brandenburg and Sweden's thrones.

Be aware that you dont need the +3 stab modifier at the start, as you can only inherit PU members after 50 years.

You first need to wait 50 years... so in the early game +3 staby is not needed

Do not take venice in the second war! Its always great to have venice keep their capital province for a little while, while you own the trade node so venice with all their trade modifiers steers its trade into your venice trade node. What often happends to venice trade node if the Austrians take it all is that its a 10 ducats max trade node as austria has les steering potential

Good strategy is after you first war with ottomans take all the coast and their land borders to the balkans and 1 Bulgarian province, then spawn in Bulgarian rebels and then release Bulgaria as a vassal and watch the rebels transfer all the cores back to your vassal.

Hey Ludi. How do you make Milan an elector when the HRE already had 7 electors and it’s impossible to remove someone as an elector before the League War?

If you wanted to prevent the Ottokebab from getting strong you could just ally everyone and no-CB Byzantium, Vassalise them, and inherit the defensive war in which you can call anyone.

Regretfully, it doesnt work too well with the actual version 1.32, because now you get an overall AE of 106 with taking the Bohemian union peace option, which will get you a massive koalition right at the start with the whole of roman empire. You get the same amount of AE if you force the union with Milan and Hungary. Can't tell if it is a bug or supposed to be that way now.

Small tip from a guy who's played Austria a thousand times since 1.30: Bohemia mothballs the Olomouc fort if you don't put troops on his border. Instead put your troops so that they walk into a bordering province on the 2nd of the month, then declare on the 1st and rush the fort. You can easily blitz Bohemia in 1 year and peace out for the union and some cash without calling in any ally.

I don't know if it's the new update or what but winning the restoration of union war against Bohemia gave me 99 AE in the HRE and literally every nation I wasn't allied to joined a coalition in the span of a month

I never need mercy in these wars due to the manpower buff provided by the HRE. Taking the goldmines while doing the PU is a good idea. I’m an 🦍 and never thought about that. The start seems pretty normal to me.

Seriously, how are you gaining ducats while maintaining 3 mercenary armies and a +3 advisor (albeit for 50% of the price)?

For the Bohemian War I never use mercenaries. A stack of 2 armies is enough. If you ally Hungary and I always do in case Poland attacks them you can call them in and promise land. The war this way becomes hella easy. Also another point for this war is attacking on the first of any month from vienna as the fort in Olmütz (i dont know the other name) is always mothballed. Are you sure you should take the gold mines? I never tried but a lot of times the Hungarians especially spiral into debt and the gold mine helps them out. Idk... for a vassal I'd probably agree but for a PU I want them as strong as possible... good guide

I'm not fast enough yet to do insanely fast world conquests but hey, I earned Mare Nostrum today while having almost whole Souh America, Moluccas, Australia and half of North America as my PUs of Casstille, Portugal and Britian colonized a lot. Definitely fun run! :D

I remember Holy war CB against the Ottomans.i was playing as France allied to to Poland with all the little stuff, Moscowy, Portugal, Burgundy with all it's stuff, our alliance took 600 000 casualties on Tech 8, ottomans toot 240 000 but they ran out of armies and we have won.

Remember you can remove electorate from cologne or let him die. So you give electorate to burgundy or Milan, so when you get them as pu they will always vote for you (but you need to do this before they are pu)

Would you ever recommend going for "Humanist ideas" instead of "Religious ideas"? And in which situation? Also, have you ever considered making a guide about absolutism (how to "harvest" it, to which point it is needed and so on).

Also good thing to do is to RM Castille. If both of u rivalled France, they don't have heir and u have a RM with them, they might get a Habsurg heir from the event :3

I'm actually thinking if influence wouldn't be better than diplo ideas since you're keeping all your vassals and PU members more loyal and that annexing them is cheaper. You also got the extra relation slot. Which helps with diplo mana gain.

Has the aggressive expansion changed since this video? I have much more AE with just Bohemia and Hungary. A coalition formed with a 100,000 strong army and attacked me.

You actually get both Poland and Lithuania if you get the PU on Poland (If Poland has a Jagiellon on the throne, of course)

My strategy in early wars with Venice when I don't have a navy big enough to beat theirs is to make a sacrificial fleet, park it somewhere else before the war, and use it to bait the fleet defending Venetia into a battle a sea tile or two away so I have time to sneak an army in.

I like the union over Bohemia since if you get to integrate them you become an elector yourself. However, I don't like to subjugate more electors as you then either need 3 all the time under your control or have to deal with accumulating malusses with the other electors. I rather wait to see what Hungary does before I declare a war; if you can get Hungary for free it's better resource, time and AE wise. Instead, you can feed hungary Polish land or Venetian land before they fall under union. Any land you feed them is added to you later for free anyway.

Admin + Influence is really strong. I did a Provence game, which gives another 20% reduction. Unfortunately, I did not form Jerusalem on time because I wanted to get that -20% diplo annexation cost and wasn't at the skill level I am now. I want to play them again soon (great country to play as) and go for a one faith. Permanent CB on non-Catholics, extra missionary and missionary strength in ideas (and more from stave church and Holy City of Jerusalem monuments), so religious ideas aren't even needed at all. Conquer the world while I play the diplomatic game in Europe, at the end of the game I can form France to get Poland as a vassal and Castile in a PU. GG

I think going for Polish PU is worth so much in early game which Poland can get Lithuania too. that's what I did in 2018
