In this comparison I rank and field test 5 popular survival style knives you can buy off Amazon or Blade HQ, including the Buck 119, Esee Laser Strike, Fallkniven s1, Cold Steel SRK, and Gerber Strong Arm. I discuss handle, weight, blade length, best usage, batoning, tofu and more. These knives often appear in top knife lists all over the internet. You can start fires, dress game, wear them with a dress, build shelters, lose them, defend yourself from feral hogs, or whatever you imagination desires. Check out my full reviews below.
An updated text version of this review is available over on Knife Informer: knifeinformer....
Correction: The SRK-C is a smaller version. This is the regular SRK but in Carbon. I got my wires crossed reading too many product pages and an incorrect photo.

I got the Buck 120, a 1982 model, from E-Bay a month ago. I got the older model because I think the fit and finish of the older models is better than that of the current day knives. I fiddled with it for about a week and then decided to sharpen it. I have a inexpensive belt sharpener I use (because I am bad at sharpening). I attempted to sharpen the 120 and somehow managed to catch it in the groove on the sharpener. It grabbed the blade and put a big channel right on the edge. Imagine that; this knife survived for 40 years with only light wear. It survived for about 3 minutes once it got into my hands. Thats pretty much how my life usually goes…

4:14 Good question! My answer is epoxy. The finger guard got loose on my buck 119 through hard use, and I slathered it with (way too much) epoxy. The thing is utterly impenetrable now, and cleaning is a breeze. No more nooks and crannies where dirt / food / animal blood / water could collect. I’ve had my Buck 119 since I was 16 years old. I’m 23 now, so for about 7 years I’ve put a lot of use on this blade. Of those 7 years, for about 5 of them I’ve carried the 119 as my EDC. I’ve done pretty much everything you could possibly do with that knife, from cooking and daily chore work to woodcarving, bushcraft, and processing game. For a while in high school I had a job where all I did was cut open pre-packaged boxed goods, cut down the boxes, and stack the flat cardboard into big dumpster trailers. A local businessman had bought out some sort of “As-Seen-On-TV” exercise equipment maker, and he wanted to rebrand. He hired me and a few of my friends, and we all had different roles. I did what I described above, and my friends repackaged the stuff into the new containers. I went through what was probably 20,000 boxes at that job, and exclusively used my Buck 119. I had to sharpen it about twice throughout each day, but all it would take was a minute or two on my pocket whetstone and it would be good to go. I know it’s only 420HC steel, but between whatever Buck does to it and the grind of the knife, it stayed sharp very well. I never had one issue with the knife. These days, I run my own woodworking shop. I sell hand-carved wooden products, like spatulas, spoons, bowls, trays, bowdrill sets, primitive traps, and a couple dozen other items. I regularly use the Buck 119 for hours on-end, carving my products. While it’s not really intended to be used as a dedicated carving knife, I’m more familiar with it than any other blade, and it works well for me. In my opinion, it isn’t the greatest knife ever made, and it isn’t even my favorite knife that I own. But it’s absolutely excellent, and it holds the most sentimental value. Apart from that sentimental value, it actually performs better than a lot of folks tend to give it credit for. It’s comfortable to use, very versatile, and it’s durable enough to handle everything I’ve thrown at it.
@DayRider76

The Buck 119 is the only knife I have three of. One was my Grandpas, One was my Dads and the other is mine. All will be passed down. Sure there are better knifes, but none will hold that degree of place in my heart.

At 72 years old, I've been collecting blades for decades, not for questing for the one ultimate blade for me, because I can appreciate the look, ergonomics, materials, fit/finish & fondleability of each one. I worship the sun, wind, hiking/hunting/camping/fishing & whitewater solo boating gear in my stable as much as a close friendship!!! ( A bit materialistic, I know, but so what ).

So as a man from a better generation you know what matters is do you like the knife? Is it reliable and does it suit your needs? We live in a day where your life doesn't depend on if your blade holds up, unless you are going for that experience and head into the mountains for a year or something. So if it looks good to ya, feels good in your hand and isn't gonna disappoint when you're using it... There's more options than one can count 😎. Hope you're still out there having fun.

Two years ago I had to surrender my Spyderco folder to airport security because the line to check my bag was two hours long and the flight my job depended on was forty five minutes from departing. I replaced it with a folding Buck knife I found for $30. It was meant to be a short term replacement until I could find a new Spyderco. It is nowhere near as nice as my Spyderco, but it holds up well to all the abuse I inflict on my daily carry knive. I am growing quite fond of my Buck, not enough to behave like an ass in commentary sections. I promise to step up my Buck love, so I can offer far more entertainment value in the future.

I was in the Army and used to get on aircraft with my whole platoon carrying M16s and SAW machine guns. None of the aircraft got hijacked. BTW, I have lost my share of things. I left a Leatherman in my carry on luggage in Panama. Lost a Nalgene bottle with a special lid so it probably cost me $40 altogether. It just had water in it. The worst was a Cold Steel tanto that was in my checked baggage as I landed in Korea. It was ostensibly illegal to possess in Korea, but when I got to Osan Air Base I just bought another one at Clothing Sales.

When I was a boy (Old guy voice) Buck was the go to knife. Today, my collection of Buck knives are mostly sharp edged straight slot screw drivers. Not one phillips in the bunch... The tips on a Buck come needle pointed from the factory, but they only last as long as the guy using it remembers not to abuse them. The SRK replaced my 119 several years ago and is actually a handy tool in just about any circumstance. That's my 2 cents from the peanut gallery.

I own the strongarm myself, and I do admit the whole thing is much better suited for gloved use, which happens to fit how I roll. The holster design does especially feel like it's made to be one of those things that are always on you, not always used, but also always ready to be used. I'm quite happy with it personally, and still regard it as worth the price

Hey can I ask for a recommendation? I'm not a hunter, an outdoorsy guy, or a bushcrafter(I hate building plants), but let's say I find myself in the deep woods and get into a bearfight, Leonardo DiCaprio style. What's the best knife to stab a bear with? I want something that impresses it.

Yeah, I think "impressing the bear to death" is your best bet in that situation. Maybe something like a Cold Steel Grosse Messer, it's right there in the name - big knife - pretty sure all bears speak German so shouting "I'll get my Grosse Messer out if you don't piss off" should do the trick just fine. Good luck. :)

Stumbled upon your video here while looking up information on the Strongarm. I have to say that your commentary is absolute gold and if we had more folks like you in this world, I probably wouldn’t hate people nor despise being around them nearly as much. I was seriously dying when you said “Internet tabletop survivalists”, “culture war commandos” and “backyard hair gel bros”. Then when I’d stop laughing long enough to be able to breathe and wipe the tears from my eyes, you snuck in the easter egg gems like “Classes on the RU-vid” and “Tactical cosplay”. Well played mate 🤣👊. Admittedly, I do like the look of the coyote Strongarm and the sheath is pretty badass too with its mounting options. I will probably get one and since my frontcountry and backcountry camping kits are being built around durable military surplus items (recently purchased a British DPM military surplus 100L Bergen and will be picking up the Tennier Industries modular sleep system in the new year) I’m sure the Strongarm will be more than capable of completing the tasks at hand while I am camping.

First, your videos are awesome. The humor crackes me up. I had the Gerber Strongarm but returned it. I feel like for what is offered the price point should be half of what it is. It seems like with a lot of camping abuse it wouldn't do well.
@DDDYLN

@Nelle Hgit the Gerber Strongarm costs $20 more than the most expensive Ontario Spec Plus series knife. Those knives will all outlast the Strongarm, have comfortable handles, and are some of the most durable knives on the market. They are carbon steel, so they need to be oiled occasionally. There's no way a 420HC knife is going to be even half as tough as a thick 1075 knife, from a more reputable company.

I just bought one for my first real knife from a recommendation of a co-worker. 3 main reasons for it. 1. I don’t carry it for self-defense, that’s what my bang is for. 2. Fixed blade for the added strength for cutting wood and the like. 3. Cheap. Only knife I’ll be paying more than $80 for is from a Leatherman. And that’s not just a knife.

I broke my srk on the first use (blade started separating from the handle with light batoning). Was super disappointed because I heard such great things about it. I have several strong arms and they have been beaten and battered more than any other of my higher end fixed blades. Never had an issue with them. The handles are a little uncomfortable after some hard use, but definitely not the worst. Different experiences I suppose.

@@AdvancedKnifeBro Oh the blade is great, that’s what drew me to it. Holds a pretty good edge to. But like you said in the video, molded handles can be iffy if not done right. I’ve learned to love what I love in the community, and not chase what people say I should. Had more failures with the brands people say I should go for. Just pisses ya off more when those failures are on 200$ pieces. Great video as always brother! Comedic timing on point as always. 🍻

I EDC a Tracker knife, and for what I need it’s perfect. I live in the middle of nowhere so I’m constantly splitting wood, carving, gutting, notching, and starting fires. I’ve never owned a blade that I thought was perfect, my philosophy has always been that a blade that does it’s intended purpose good is a good blade. So I exercise caution when a knife has multiple functions, because more often than not, it will do several mediocre functions but none better than the other. Instead I’d much rather have a simple blade that does one thing, and that one thing good. The Tracker is the only exception to my rule so far. It is so versatile and useful in many facets that I’ve been pleasantly surprised by it during each use. Just an amazing blade.
