No one gives you the actual street photography tip. How do you not make people and the authorities uncomfortable while taking 100s of photos on the streets? How do you become invisible? What are the kind of legal repercussions that you must be aware about?
@Icedcoffee03
@Icedcoffee03 3 года назад
@@sameersinha7799 Let me try and give some tips. I started doing street photography more seriously and since I am more of a quiet photographer I have found some ways to do it with confidence. 1. Don't hang around for too long, try and take the photo and keep moving. 2. Once you have your eyes on someone you want a picture of, focus on the screen or the viewfinder rather than making eye contact with them. 3. And my last tip would be to get out there are snag photos, start taking photos as if they are yours because they are. It has helped me become way more confident because I take my photos with people in them as if I don't care what other people might think. It isn't illegal or anything so I take the pictures I want. At some point I lost the social anxiety and became open to people.

I always shoot in shutter priority (for both stills and video). if you are shooting video at 30 fps you can expose anywhere up to 1/40 of a second to deal with low light if that is an issue. depends on where you live as well. I spent 3 months in New York this summer and while I was there I bought a used camera and began taking photos. When I was taking photos of people on the street they were all really chill about it, some of them even stopped and posed. Meanwhile, back home, people aren t so open minded and most of them are actually bothered that you took their photo and they make you delete it. Mentality difference

I have never been sold on a 85mm so easily lol "I am a shy photographer" sold. This is my absolute main issue as street photographer, I avoid confrontation and I do not want to make people feel uncomfortable. I am socially awkward and have anxiety and so I avoid the most interesting part of streetphotography, people and interactions.
@mygoodstuffreviewed

#4 really speaks to me. I've been chasing technical perfection all my life (sharpness, clarity, lack of noise etc.) and yet when I look at some of the street photos I've taken and enjoy, they are not always perfect. If there is a story within the frame, the technical side of things recedes into the background. If a photo has great content, it can afford a slight imperfection - whether that's missed focus or a bit of noise. I'll be shooting street at a workshop in London this weekend and I'll be forcing myself to let go of the need for absolute sharpness. I'll be making a video with my results so I hope I can show that I've learned my lesson :) I don't have an 85mm lens for my Fuji, but I'm interested to try such a lens out in the future. I was surprised to hear Kenneth say it was his go-to lens for street. I do like the idea of a bit more separation from the subject, since I'm a bit of a shy photographer too. Currently using a 27mm Fuji lens on an XPro1, so I'll have to get in close this time round.

I always engage my subjects on the street. Small intro of who I am, what I want to do. If it's OK, I take the image. If not? I move on to my next subject. Having said that, I'm I portrait photographer who shoots on the street. Matter of fact several years ago I was at a homeless shelter for men. I pulled out my Mamiya RB67 the fellow I was going to shoot a couple of frames with knew all about my gear I had in my bag. He used to shoot Fashion in New York years ago. Now he was homeless and roaming. I've met some really interesting folks that I've met under bridges, homeless shelters, or just on the street. I love shooting folks on the streets.

Wish he would explain the limitations of prime lenses for street photography. they aren't perfect and it's a give and take. I shoot prime and zoom. Primes mainly in lower light situations. As a travel photographer/street photographer, my work is fast. So there usually isn't enough time to wait, move, adjust, and perfectly frame a shot. Zooms make it faster and easier to recompose a shot on the fly. 100% agree that Prime IQ is better than zoom. My 24-105 f4 can't touch my 85 1.8 in terms of image. Been following him for a minute. Love his work.
@professorhineschoice
@professorhineschoice 4 года назад
There's a long response I'd make to this, but I can't type all of that lol... I mentioned primes to not say that's the only way to capture street, as I have quite a few with the 24-70mm and my 16-35mm lenses as well. This is how I shoot, using primes for my work vs zooms but my point is for people to use what they have, but here's my reasons for prime lenses for street. =)

For street photography, you take pictures of strangers from adults to children. If you plan to post these photos on social media, legally do you need permission from these strangers to post these photos? I know that would seem like a tough process to do ----or is it free for all since it's theyre all in public places?
@professorhineschoice
@professorhineschoice 4 года назад
Liane Reyes there’s mixed opinion about it, but i share them with no harm intended. I’m not selling them to companies or as stock photos, which I don’t agree with some doing but I never share photos that shows anyone in a negative way. The photos i take i wish people got to see to be honest but it’s impossible to always do that depending on the situation.

Yeah, good tips, I don't disagree, but the photographs are very weak. This is not street photography :)

Great video. Thanks to Professor Hines being for sharing his thoughts and images. Love the honesty when talking about that great “mistake” image. Missed focus, but had the vision to see the image in post. Well done.

Question: can you sell photos even if your subject is a person who didn’t know they were in the photo? And if so, where do you sell them because shutterstock for instance won’t let you unless you have their consent.

I love these tips; I think I might them quite useful. It's also nice to know that even professional photographers can be unimpressed with their original shots, sometimes.

I know photographers that shoot and then don't look at the photos for 6 months. This makes them more objective when evaluating the photos. I'm not one of those people, but I have found that by going back and looking at old photos, I initially rejected, I've discovered some gems.

I think it's down to choice/intent. And focusing distance. At close focusing distance, even f/4 is going to have a thin depth of field at 85mm. The further you are from your subject, the bigger the depth of field at any given aperture. So it's a double edged sword that you have to be mindful of. I've shot at 1.8 plenty, but I generally stop it down to 2.2 or 2.8 just to get rid of any excess chromatic aberration and vignetting and a little boost in corner sharpness. Most 85mm lenses aren't their best optically until f/4-f/5.6, then it's downhill after about f/8. But sometimes people just want to challenge themselves too. What can I get if I force myself at only f/1.8 today? What can I get if I force myself to only f/4? And it's those challenges that can make you think differently. If you only follow a laid out set of rules, you will never do anything original. You'll be looking at things like "Well he said I gotta do f/6 to get more context, thems the rules". If you spend too much time trying to use someone elses formula, you will never invent your own, and that will be as good as if you're taking THEIR picture, and just holding the camera for them. It is really important to have intuition to know when to use what aperture, and to do that, you must understand your lens characteristics through usage. Sometimes what's in focus is all that matters, and the background won't add anything useful by being less blurred. Sometimes it makes it more magical. Sometimes you don't want people to know where they are. Heck, I've personally taken it a step further and tinkered with even lower DOF than 1.8 can offer, by using weak macro filters, which can turn 1.8 into an even more razor thin DOF and even add special characteristics to the blur regardless of the aperture. Typically in street photography, you're not at infinite focus, so you might lose infinite focus, but you won't really need it anyways. And that's what I mean about finding your own style by not adhering to someone elses rules. Don't underestimate the power of thin DOF, it's trickier to utilize, but can pay off big when utilized properly, and to be able to utilize it properly takes experience. So if people think "Oh I should never shoot 1.8", they will never have the experience needed to have the intuition to know when to use it. 1.8 may be used a lot mistakenly by newbies, but it does take more professional insight to utilize it properly. It's hard mode, while f/6 is easy mode because of all the slack you get with that extra DOF. And sometimes, the difficulty is what makes photo's that much more meaningful to the person taking it, and stick out among the crowd of other photographers.

@@peoplez129 You said a lot there and I could only skim over that at the moment lol... but of what I read I don't disagree. These are things I would have shared, but that would be an hour long video. I've shared these same points on IG on specific images. One thing you pointed out is something many I have in my community don't get... where you talked about DoF and distance! THAT'S EXACTLY IT!! I'm asked a lot on how I can use an 85mm but everyone in a photo is sharp... and it's because of the distance to my subject being greater... so the DoF plane is wider.

Legit info here💯 In particular one of the things I'm going to try to put into practice is that sharpness isn't everything. I'm really new and have been shooting for about a year. So initially I've been trying to get as technically good as possible, but now that I've gotten more confident I want to let myself use things that might be a great moment or composition even if it's slightly out of focus or I need to crop a lot. Thank you for the great content!

I'm curious about this. When doing street photography is it OK to post someone else pictures without their permission? specially if some shots like on the examples shown in the video, candid shots. the discussion made by professor is indeed wonderful. very natural and full of passion.

it's not very convincing what the "professor" is talking about he doesn't come close to people. he crops all of his images that clearly shows that he is shy and there is no interaction between him and his subjects, which is exactly in contrast to what is said in the beginning of this film. It was also said that using prime lenses is very much favourable to interacting with the scene and then he goes with ...85mm which is typically a portrait lens, almost a tele, used to separate the subject from the background. Then he advises not to use the shallow Depth of field : again BS as he over uses the shallow depth of field which is completely again pointless here and it's not exactly the street photography per se. it's clearly a promotional material from Zeiss rather than useful tips about street photography.

What a great body of work Mr Hines seems to have. My only pickle with the way this video was laid out was with the way his photographs were presented as I didn't know whether his photos he intended us to look at were the complete ones on the left or the heavily cropped ones on the right.
