Very useful tips. One thing that got my OCD kicking in was when you were talking about moving a note in a chord is you kept saying 7th when you moved the root down a semitone. That's actually major 7th, 7th is flat 7th, like B flat in a C chord, huge in blues and rock. Major 7th is more common in jazz and Latin American music. You're right that you moved the note to the 7th note of the scale and I accept any criticism that I'm too obsessive ;)
Dean this video (all your videos really) are a LIFE SAVOR (music savor?). You answered so many questions that pop into my head during the songwriting process. Thanks for being a God-send and taking the time and effort to put out good, clear, concise content
Great ideas! Especially recording the baseline for the drummer to follow👍 I was having some transition trouble, where the drummer just put some weird fill instead of dynamically going into my chorus...forgot what I did to fix it, but this is a much better idea.🙂
Really appreciate this tutorial - these are all great, easy-to-follow steps that will definitely make our respective songs more interesting and unique. Thank you for sharing!
Some great info! Thx. I couldn't help but notice how many tracks you had in that tune...and each one still seems to occupy its own "space" in the song! My recordings have a fraction of those instruments and somehow they still come out sounding "crowded" at times.
Hey Paul! I hear you man. Giving everything its own "space" is skill that takes time! I don't even necessarily have tips on how to give them their own space other than making song after song where you'll start to recognize when a piece adds something or takes away from the overall song. -Dean
Glad you enjoyed it Lori! That song is yet to be completed but I am working a group of other originals for my first album and sharing about that process with my patrons here! www.patreon.com/home
Dean, can you please do a video on how to get more instrument sounds, i don't have that electric piano on my garage band, and how to incorporate plugins, you are a God send thanks
I really like your channel. I'm new to making music and I have a lot of questions. You could probably make a video about the elements of a song, for example how loud it is to persuade the bass to sound, Or explain to us what lead, pad, synth, topper are ? Thank you :)
Hey TiMO! I get those extra keyboards from a program called MainStage ($30 in the App Store) which I did a video on here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YrqAvAQjYEI.html ... sorry for the delay, I must have missed this message! -Dean
quick question do you know of a way to flex audio samples brought into garageband? i have new project that I want to release but the sample isnt fittin the tempo i need
Hi I just purchased an iMac that has the newest version of garage band on it, I was also going to get the novation MK3 launch key to use as my controller. Could you tell me in your opinion what is the best controller to use for the newest version of garage band. Thank you
Very nice, sounds like you have some exciting stuff going on over there Mark! Yes indeed, I always recommend the M Audio KeyStation 49 ($99 brand new) as it is a quality keyboard, it syncs automatically into GB (no drivers needed), and I have several years experience using it! That said, I know there are several great options out there, this is just the one that has worked for me for several years now (and a few of my writing/recording buddies). I did a video a while back on my home studio gear recommendations if you're curious about things beyond a MIDI controller ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-X6_TnLOZBTw.html ... Hope some of that helps Mark! -Dean
The Songwriting Studio ok...sounds good... I will watch a bunch of tutorials on that. I will be joining your MasterClass for garage band once everything has arrived. Your tutorial videos are 2nd to none. Keep up the great work!
To make the drums more dynamic during the chorus - is it possible to do that if the whole song was recorded in one take ? Or does it mean that the chorus has to be recorded separately ? :))
Great Video, super helpful :) Quick question though, I am using an M Audio Vocal USB Condenser Microphone. I think the vocals recorded are quite low. Can you tell me how can I amplify them without hampering the vocals? Also, could you suggest me a good mic stand please?
Hey Himanshu! Good question... I would try turning up the gain/volume on the mic itself if that's an option. Then when you sing into the mic make sure you are a few inches away from it and not right on it. If you need more volume you can turn up the gain and/or move closer to the mic, if you need less volume then you can turn down the gain/volume or move another few inches away from the mic. As far as a mic stand I use one from DR Pro... hope that helps Himanshu! -Dean
@@thesongwritingstudio5783 thanks Dean! I will try the same and let you know. I learnt a bit of mixing and mastering because of your videos, so thank you for being this teacher you are. Hope you are doing good and staying healthy!
Hi Dean. Me again 😁. When clicking "follow" in drum editor to follow the bass, will it only work with MIDI bass input? or will it work if i record my own bass on an audio track using a DI and/or mic? Love your vids!!!
I dont even use garageband but i will still watch this video :D I might learn something! Anyway was just wondering if you could give me some feedback on my latest song! It would mean a lot to me! Thanks!
Hi Dean , I have a query please try to help me Whenever I use the AU pitch plugins in garageband and make any changes by moving its knob it brings a bar on the screen which should disappear as I release the knob but it remains on the screen and it disappears only when I quit garageband and that is very annoying can you help me out I know the description is confusing but I can't send you the pictures about it Please try to help me......
You are amazing man! Loved the Aidan drums! I wanted To choose Aidan from the drummer options but it seems to be charging and i cannot select it? How do I get all drumers? Thank you in advance! I am a subscriber! :)
Hey Adolfo, glad it was helpful! To get all of the drummer you can go up to the GarageBand drop down menu (top left hand side of the screen) and hover over "Sound Library" then click on "Download All Available Sounds" which will give you all of the sounds (drummers included) that GB has to offer! -Dean
@@thesongwritingstudio5783 Thank you so much for the early response, Dean. I proceded to do what you said, but now all sounds don’t seem To download, the loading circle keeps moving for every sound. If you know anything about that I would appreciate it if you let me know! Anyway I will do my research on google!! Thank you so much for inspiring musicians To use GarageBand! 🎸
@@solounusuariomas5574 Hey Adolfo! From my experience, it will simply take some time! I've had a download take hours before. So I would leave GB open when you're done using it and just let it do it's thing for as long as it needs and see if it finishes things up! -Dean
@@thesongwritingstudio5783 Ok ok, Dean!!! I will wait for it To finish the download!! Thank you for sharing your experience, Dean!! You are very kind!!! I’ll be watching more of your videos! n_n
Hello Thank you for this vidéo But where can I find the liverpool bass because I like this sound And is it possible to play piano chords with garage band Thank you Phil
Hey Phil! Glad you enjoyed it... If you are not seeing the Liverpool bass then I would try updating your sound library by going to the GarageBand pull down menu, hovering on Sound Library, then clicking "Download all available sounds" (or you can do an individual instrument by clicking beside any instrument that has a greyed out circle beside it). And yes, you can play chords in GarageBand! You can use your typing keyboard to do it by hitting Command + K to bring up the "musical typing feature" and you can control/play/record any software instruments with it. Hope that helps Phil! -Dean
Do you have an email, I am still interested in paying you to mix a track... Also can you please do a tutorial on how to make a drag and drop audio track sound better, sometimes we use beats from other producers and how do we make those tracks sound good with vocals ....THANKS YOU ARE THE BEST HANDS DOWN, GARAGEBAND SHOULD HIRE YOU AS OFFICIAL SPOKESPERSON! Have a great day everyone
Hey there! My studio email is Dean@TheSongwritingStudio.com... Are you talking about how to shapes loops that you drag into a project or recorded clips that people are sending you? -Dean
@@thesongwritingstudio5783 Hi Dean thanks! I am talking about...in a lot of trap music. Rappers and singers use beats made by other producers and when you drag and drop those audio files, I was wondering how to make the blend between the drag and drop instrumental and the vocal! Either way, I love your tutorials and they have helped my recordings get way better.
Ha I hear you Selin :) but that's what those tools are there for! They were created for the purpose of become library of "paints" for you to choose from and use in your song! You might be surprised how many songs you love are using drum loops and/or melodic loops... it's a new "tool" that we music makers now have available to us. -Dean
why? thats just a made up invisible rule, I would celebrate using other peoples creations, also you can still make your own, no rules on how to make and create art
Hey Sam, I typically only listen to songs from students of my paid courses. Beyond that, I will listen to a song here or there by subscribers. That said, feel free to post a link to your song in this chat feed! -Dean
