I endorsed this kit for a couple of years. Its the Peavey radial bridge pro 1000 set, the first drumset without lugs, the tuning screws went directly in this thick wooden ring at the top and the botton of the shell. With this technique they could make the shell only 3 mm thin. Two extremly annoying facts let the kit die. First, the drummers around the mid- 90s didnt accept the look of the drums and called it car rim, toilet seat and Second, the constructor of the set, Steven Volpp and Hartley Peavey got into a big fight and ended their corporation.....I am so sad i had to give it back, it was outstanding but i didnt have the money back in 2004…
What's a Double Stroke ??? Just kidding.... These guys on RU-vid (Jared and others) scare me Man. I'm 69 years old and just got back into playing drums (if You can call it that ), after a 50 YEAR layoff... Got a cheap drum kit for XMAS from the wife, who knew me when I played in the garage band that never left the garage... zi was making an inquiry that I MIght go to a music studio to play the drums "to get it out of my System" So She got me a Gammon Drum kit . Now I'm hooked again. It will be great for my upcoming retirement before my arthritis gets the best of me.... I play along to MY Music (CCR, Petty, Meloncamp, Zombies, Stones, Beatles, Hollies, even Linda Ronstadt [You will be surprised at how good she was], Eagles, etc... ) in the basement , trying to keep to the beat of the music without missing too many . Charlie Watts , Ringo , yeah.... That's about my pace. Can't even Touch : Baker, Moon, Copeland ( a little maybe !!!), Piert (Whoa Baby), and many many other great Drummers .... But the name of the game is to have enjoyment and fun playing . Hopefully, with more practice and Muscle Memory , I'll become better at it ... Happy Drumming all - stay well in this madness.
I definitely neglected double stroke practice for way too long when I first started playing. It takes time but it’s so worth it once your technique develops!
inktloos I was a professional drummer for my first few years of adulthood (before life took a radical turn) and, growing up in rural Australia and poor, my only access to music was collecting old tapes to record jazz from the radio, and sitting in a hot tin shed imitating what I heard. Now that I've returned to drumming as a passionate amateur in my early 40s, the resources utterly blow my mind! A completely different world.
Literally thinking the same dam thing. Can not express the appreciation for all of these drummers here and other channels. I feel like we get the how to pull a rabbit out of a hat videos for free. But most importantly the encouragement and knowledge.
I started playing drums because I got plenty of time to play during quarantine, this helps a lot specialy for me as a beginner to improve my skills and techniques. 🤘 I could say that I'm addicted to learn more on how to the play drums.
I'm pretty nasty with singles. My doubles however, been practicing push/pull method forever and just recently started fast rolling with my doubles. It feels great when it starts working.
If you want to get better with singles, I'd say you should learn how to play blast beats and apply them to whatever music you listen to (doesn't have to be metal), and start practicing along to faster music in general. In my opinion, the best band to play along to for developing speed (in fills, in beats, in double kick) is Slayer
Am I wrong or is Dave just playing two singles? I mean the difference is basically he accentuates the second stroke but he isn't using some special technique like push/pull right?
Can't tell you how much I appreciate these lessons as I'm getting back into it after over a decade of not playing. What a great teacher, and he is so humble! there are a lot of god complexes in the drumming sphere and it's just real refreshing when you find a great teacher who is down to earth with you and normalizes the struggles you will overcome as you improve!
Hey Drumeo, I watched this video 2 or 3 times to really understand how you worked the wrists, sat down begind the kit for 30 minutes, and expanded my playing speed about three times! Thank you really, didn’t think I had that speed in me, and I feel super great and thankful! You guys are awesome!
I have been drumming in a very noisy punk band 18 years now and we really only use single stroke rolls. So I never learned to play and apply doubles well. This is helping me so much - in 5 minutes I am seeing improvements. ❤
Awesome lesson! I am so frustrated with my doubles and will definitely incorporate these into my practice sessions! Thanks man and love the set and Paiste cymbals.
This is true, but relying strictly on rebound causes your doubles to sound mush… learning this way will clean it up so when you’re forced to use rebound you have more control
The rebound from the fingers is really good for doubles, absolutely, especially if you can get that accented second note. That said, there’s no harm in working on both so you have options, or so you can dial into what’s most comfortable for you. If you have a big floor tom with low tuning then rebound is hard to come by, for instance.
I’ve been drumming for about two years...it’s hard to progress when your dyslexia interferes with your counting and also a learning disability that makes it hard to process things. I’ve been on the verge on quitting but still keep on wanting to learn and improve.
For someone with dyslexia you sure do write and spell very well! Good on you mate. If you have a passion for the drums and haven't quit yet, even with the disabilities you have, I think you will enjoy the rewards of your hard work even more when you see improvements. Remember, there are different kinds of learners, and one of the main ones with drumming is kinesthetic learning, or learning by feel. When you practice, really try to feel what the sticks are doing. Also, if you feel the timing, you don't have to count in your head or out loud. Keep at it, I wish you all the best on your drumming journey, I hope this helped in some way.
MetaGordy thank you for your support, English is me second language my dyslexia impacts more my reading and counting like I had stated bu I agree with the feel when you play !!!!
I really did enjoyed. I'll be 65 next October, and I bought an electronic drum set to learn drumming. Thought I play congas, I wanted to learn play the set. I use doble stroke on congas as well. Thanks for your tutorials, you are a good teacher.
Been playing drums for 15 years. I suck with rudiments. Decided I'm gonna start over from day one. Getting a teacher soon and bought my first drum pad.
.....I love how you break down stuff and explain it logically it really makes it snap into "ohhhhhh that makes sense now"....but I bet you 100% chew in time and it terrifies your friends and family.
WOW ❤ This❗ I've been needing this lesson after being lost for many years of can't figure out why I can't do this kinda fill around the set and struggled, THANK YOU ❗🎯👍💯✌
The timing of these videos is always right after me realizing my weakness in that area. Just yesterday I was complaining about my doubles because I was so certain they were on point on the pad but when I got to the kit something was off.
Been fart around with the drums for over ten years and just in the last 3 months been working on this. Thanks for the video! Need some help to tighten up.
I have watched almost all your lessons sir...And it had helped me a lot and I just can't be thankful...I always dream to come in drumeo studios and give once a lecture... Thankyou sir for helping us so so much...I also bought your best beginner drum book...Really a crazy fan of you...thanks from my bottom of my heart.. Love from India
Most of my working life has been as a working drummer. Many decades over three hundred nights a year.! Lucky! As a working drummer I mostly kept it simple, no surprises helped kept me employed. It also didn't push my limits. After years I hit burn out and took a sabbatical to pursue other interests. I have since been recruited back into the businesses refreshed but with a different plan. Find that limit or at least try. I joined Drumeo but let my subscription laps because a lot of the lessons kinda dragged on and on with a lot of talk. Fine for a young drummer learning to walk kinda but I am get in the studio/club/rehearsal what ever get the job done pack up get paid and get out. Most of the working musicians I know are like that. With that said this lesson was perfect. I loved it. Right to the point, had fun and got the job done. Basic stuff but all pro athletes no matter what sport all go back to the basics from time to time. I'd love it if you would make a series of videos like this one in Drumeo, maybe now you do, and label it as no frills or something. Nice job with this one. Love the blue Peavey.
I think I have a grip technique problem. Even while going really slowly doing the first two exercises, I find myself constantly shifting the stick around in my left hand trying to find where to hold it so it isn't flailing around but also not gripping so hard that my thumb hurts.
There’s many videos out there that can teach you how to properly hold your sticks match grip. One thing I do know is that you shouldn’t be clenching hard on the stick. But keep in mind, you shouldn’t hold the sticks to where they’re so loose that you can’t control it. But also you wanna be holding your sticks loose to where someone could smack your sticks out of your hand. You have to find that median and that will help with the hand pain.
@@joudawal2973my band director often had us play with only our back fingers (like a crab) then with our front fingers. this feels and sounds weird but it really helped me with my grip and stick control!
Man doubles tutorials confuse the hell out of me, I thought I was practicing them wrong using my wrist so I switched to rebound now I am seeing you can indeed play them super fast with just fast wrist movements.
I tried to learn drums by watching drum covers but it ain't working for me. What I learnt from drumeo tutorials never leaves my memory. You guys are great tutors. Thanks
"you can start nice and slow" starts at my maximum speed :D i guess i gotta practice more... but indeed ive started to incorporate this just while watching tv and that works because it's not necessarily fun but i just put on a metronome and set a timer for 20 minutes and watch whatever and do it and it's already starting to show good results after about a week
In addition to this you should spend a couple minutes each day with extreme attention. Find out where the tight spots in your grip are, if you need to relax a muscle etc. One thing he doesn't talk about here, and why the first excersise works is because the second note accent really is just push pull when you speed it up. So, practice push pull doubles to get it clean from slow to fast tempos as well. As this excersise will only really clean you up at fast tempos but not necessarily make you clean at slower ones if you don't know why it works
This was a great video. I see many drummers that can play fast on a high rebound surface and have to overtighten their heads on all the drums (and completely rely on bass drum triggers and $1000 pedals). I tune my toms pretty low and can't use the fingers only technique on them and have gotten quite fast using only single strokes. The pillow practice method is perfect for me and I will be building my doubles and paradiddles using it.Thank you.
Your videos are incredibly helpful! Thank you. Sadly I can’t play my kit where I live only at practice so I play on pad and kick pad but you can practice this anywhere
Don't you have quarter note trips in between the quarters and 8ths? They are great for this type of exercise because you will change lead hands each bar, and also, they can be really hard to feel against a quarter note click at slower tempos 👌
this lesson does not address the role of rebound in double strokes. can you elaborate? i can see he's definitely using rebound when the speed picks up and also using some wrist as well, but where does rebound fit into this particular discussion. subscriber to drumeo, love it. thank
