exactly. It is quite clear these puppies have done this before. My puppy has NO interest in the other object for the "give" command..... unless it is a piece of sausage - and when playing tug of war - there is NO place for having sausage in the other hand - the excitement will cause a huge issue with getting that treat.
I have a 1 yr old rescue and while we do a 2 mile walk in the morning, he needs mental stimulation too and we’ve found that training like this is fantastic. I already use your 3 exercises to tire them out at home but this will be added into the arsenal.
I’m getting a pug puppy in several weeks. I discovered your channel and I’ve been binge watching all the training vids! I love your straightforward style.
My pup is a Velcro dude so having his “Place” Kees him happier while I’m scooting around the house NOT tripping on him. If I’m going to laundry or clean another room, I grab his Place and plop it down where he can watch. I have to board him for a week so I’m taking his car Place so he has something when he’s not in bed or play time.
Thanks for all the tips. This is so helpful. I love the peanut butter on the spoon idea. My friends puppy doesn't like Peanut butter but loves that cheese in a can. She gets the low sodium kind and smears that on a spoon now to get her puppy used to getting her nails trimmed. Once that spoon comes out that puppy gets so excited 😆. I never seen a dog so excited over a nail trim before but whatever works.
I have a new puppy & I enjoy your training videos so much! I’ve been documenting my training journey here on RU-vid & I hope one day he will be as well behaved as you guys get dogs. Thanks for all your content!
I lovvvvvve your training methods! So clear and straight the point! Excellent demonstrations!! Hello from NYC! I cannot wait to watch other videos! Thanks again !🙏🏼
Leonberger, medium to low energy giant. We already have a 4.5 year old border collie/aussie mix though so we've already got a high energy one 🤣. Plus 2 cats!
Be prepared for potential puppy blues. Not enough people talk about it and I'm experiencing it now. It can be very hard, but best of luck with your new puppy!
I just don't like that all these puppy training videos look so easy because the dogs are already trained or behave pretty well. I really wanted to see how they would handle a dog that doesn't listen and/or doesn't love food.
I will get my pup in few months and i already watched everything on your channel hahaha. You guys are great! Thanks for all the tips, i really appreciate all of it
Very nice job. My only input would be to try and use two toys which are the same. Although dogs will still prefer one over the other, the more similar they are, the easier it is to entice the dog off the toy they are possessing. Once again, McCann put together a fantastic video the average dog owner can follow.
OMG. Love your videos! Smooch is such a cuteness overload. What a pleasure it is to see your training sessions. THANK YOU! At least now I can play with my Bessie and her boyfriend Pip more consciously, especially knowing that Bessie, Pip and I will benefit from these play sessions eventually. I wonder what kind of treats is Smooch getting while training?
It's a good idea to train at pup's feeding time. This way, you can use pup's kibble, slow down the eating process, & track how much your pup is eating. It also allows for more, "high value" treats for other training sessions. Have fun with Bessie & Pip!
Really great video! My 8 week old husky pup doesn’t mind being handled and I always do it after a training session. Definitely gonna incorporate the OUT command for releasing things.
I have watched so many dog training videos, none of them are as straight forward and easy to understand as yours. :) There's a trainer named Zac on You Tube and he really talks to much. Always T.M.I., just show me how to do it already!
I kind of hate the RU-vid format. Everyone shows videos with such successful dogs that make it look easy, you'll never convince me they haven't had a little priming before the camera was turned on, or that an excessive amount of editing wasn't done to make it look easy. Show me some struggles and how to handle them rather than showing me the end result. I'm having an issue with leash training and no one has mentioned it anywhere. When I put the leash on my pup, she hates it. She freaks out and starts yelping like someone is beating her. Good luck finding answers to a problem like that from youtube
@@fisharepeopletoo9653I understand your frustration! I one adopted a dog that had been tied to a tree since she was a puppy. The collar had begun embedding into her neck when she was brought to the rescue center. They said she was about a year old & for obvious reasons had developed several fear issues. We worked on building trust first. Eventually I introduced a collar by letting her sniff & explore. She was rewarded for doing simply that. Over & over for days...Next I used a soft satin ribbon along with the collar, & again rewards for any acknowledgment. Eventually I gently held the ribbon around her neck for only a few seconds; reward, reward, reward. After a few days she was comfortable enough for me to loosely tie the ribbon on & play for a few minutes. We also continued the collar desensitizing while she wore the ribbon. Next was to swap the ribbon for the collar & repeat the above training until I could attach the leash without stress. (Introduced leash the same way) We worked s l o w l y through this process & three weeks later she was happy to have her new comfy collar on, play & explore freely around the house dragging the leash along. The final step was learning to walk with the leash, & she was confident enough at this stage! Best of luck with your dog's training
Thank you for this video!! Just put a deposit down on a cockapoo pup (very excited family). It seemed like the platform training used a lot of treats. Would you do this as part of mealtimes?
These are some very helpful ideas. TY for this! My pup keeps taking her toy and running off with it, instead of bringing it back. When I tried to trim her nails she bit me twice :( I will try these techniques.
This was such a wonderful video! We've already tried these with our 12 week puppy and he's doing so well! Question though, you said you want you to be the most interesting thing in the room so don't let him grab a toy and play on his own.. but what if you want to encourage independent play so there is less separation anxiety when you're not home for an hour or two?
When I am leaving my 12 week pup for an hour or two, he will be in a crate. But before that we play tug or fetch or go for a puppy walk to tire him and also to go potty. Then he goes in crate with a chew treat (I found one made of dried sweet potato and chicken). He is tired and like a human toddler will cry about going to bed for a nap but after a few minutes he stops complaining and goes to sleep. At any rate when I return he is quiet and snoozing peacefully.
Use different toys for independent play and play with you. The ones used with you are kept special. Independent play toys will be tough and safe and busy toys. Magic mushroom, stuffed kong, ropes, hollow beef leg bones (uncooked), antlers, big balls (pony size), etc.
Is anyone else tall and finds themselves nearly falling over whenever bending down to treat at side or while walking? My wee little Yorkie is a long way from my 5'10" frame and even if I'm just trying to practice rewarding while at my side BEFORE teaching to walk with me, my back is killing by the time a 5-minute session is over. I need to teach her to give me a massage afterward. 😆
Great video. I have a 1 month 25 days old golden retriever. She loves food as goldens do. I was wondering how many treats do you give while you are doing this training? Do you break treats in half? Will I be over feeding him when training or can I do it with her kibble ? Thank you
Hi There, I have been watching quite a few of your videos in the last month or so, I'd love to know more about the treats you use if you could share that'd be awesome. I'm trying to give the best start for my 10 weeks old Boarder Collie named Togo. Cheers from New Zealand Ico
I don't like when the dog is so worried about the treats they get pushy or mouthy. My current dog I am training is so slow to eat ANY treat, and a lot less energy, so how do I make this still work. Also, I don't get what the pads are for.
So I have a challenge I inherited and rescued a 5-week-old puppy out of a cardboard box that was born on September 9th what is the best way to help him be successful in his training I haven't started crate training yet I figured he was too young so I just keep a close eye on him and try to teach him the potty pads he's only 2.5 lb the vet says he's very healthy any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated thank you in advance
My experience with puppies is that they need to be about 11 weeks old before they can "Hold it" through the night. I wrote a longer reply to " TDOT" above with more details on pee/poo training. In addition to that, my only advice is to keep the potty pads near the door so that you can gradually move the pads outside (when they figure out that you want them to pee/poo on the pad). That also trains them (and you) to go toward the door when it's time to go pee/poo. It will only take a couple of successful pee/poos outside before you no longer have to have the pad out there in the pee/poo spot.
Help! All of the training videos are amazing! But it’s very hard to train like this with teacup puppies. 😫 I’m trying everything you say but she’s soo small that not even on my knees work! Any recommendations on how to train teacup puppies? Not even her harness that is the xxs even fits her 😫😩
If there are multiple adults in home should each one take time to do this each day? If there are kids, would it be smart to involve them or be sure they are distracted with their own play in a different place?
New to your channel and I find it so helpful! My problem is my 5 month old Ringo is so skittish and untrusting (or appears to be). My vet said this is normal for Border Collies? He has never felt a harsh hand. Any suggestions? It has really slowed down training.
You might have already gotten an answer if you watched other videos from them, but they always keep what they call a "house line" (a nylon leash with the handle cut off usually, or even just a nylon rope) on their puppy when outside of their crate. It allows for easier handling when you need to stop the pup from doing something or go to grab them, especially for pups that nip because if you reach in to try to grab their collar, it is a higher chance of them nipping, and it is also very inconvenient. Whereas with the leash, or house line, they can use that to pull the puppy away from a situation, guide them, and also get them in nice and close for better control when going to handle. I hope that helps :)
Wait patiently until your puppy stops vocalizing. Be very neutral and boring, no speaking, no eye contact. Just that split second when they are quiet immediately say yes and give the treat. Timing is very important.
Please will you do a video on how to get a dog that is scared to get nails cut. He runs the minute he sees the clippers and freaks out if we get close to him. Please help
Hi Kelly I had that problem, until I started getting the clipped out when it wasn't nail cutting time... I would put them where he could sniff them and reward anytime he went near, then I would hold them regularly again without attempting to cut nails again high value reward for him touching them and letting me touch his paws with them.. Eventually after a week or so he was tolerant. Best advice I've had for grooming is the dog doesn't have to love it just so long as they are not traumatised or fearful also tire them out before attempting to have a go . . Good luck🍀🐾
Instructor Carol here. It’s unfortunate but very common. Lol.. happens in my house as well. Eventually the pup will listen to those that work value for the response to name and won’t respond for others that overuse it. But you might be able to get family members to use a nickname for your pup.
I’ve been doing the settle technique by holding the collar with my 13 weeks old puppy and it doesn’t work, she just lies down and tries roll over to bite me. It seems to make her more crazy. Help. She’s pretty good when my sons at school but when he’s home I cannot let go of her leash the whole time she’s out of her crate or she’s bolts for him. He’s developing a fear of her
Oh my word.... SAME! My 13 week old puppy does the same. He is FINE if I grab his collar or harness when he is NOT doing something wrong... he doesn't care a bit. I have done the "grab the collar - yes - release-reward" thing a million times. He is GREAT with grabbing the collar/harness.... UNLESS he needs to settle. In THOSE moments - he turns his head to bite my hand or arm when I grab it.
This is the perfect video I’ve been searching for!!! My dogs are great with pretty much everything, with the exception of doing things exactly when I say (usually takes a second or two for them to do it) and with allowing themselves to be pet by strangers. Thank you sooo much!!
bloat is very scary but it's only really an issue with large dogs with barrel chests and the risk is really only with lots of food or water then vigorus exercise, short training sessions with treats should cause bloat so i wouldn't worry
Hey Sleta, GREAT question! We are ALWAYS changing up our treats based on the scenario, dog and skill we are training. One treat that ALWAYS works well for us is our DIY Homemade Tuna Treat. Check it out here! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5rVgHLnt4W0.html&t Happy Training! ~Dan
Instructor Carol here. I used Smooch’s kibble during this video. I start with my pup in a vary low distraction environment so in most cases kibble has enough value. Plus a healthy option. Then I feed my pup a little less on the meal before or after.
Question how are you sure that he's not getting tired from eating food just like most animals do I feel like that's not enough exercise to make any sort of puppy tired It is a serious question I am about to be a new dog owner
