Thank you so much for these tips. I am currently part way through a picture using Pastelmat and Holbein pencils. Oh, how I wish I'd seen this video two weeks ago. The Holbeins and Pastelmat do not get on and now I know why, they are too soft. As a test I put down 26 layers and still couldn't blend easily. I was starting to think it was my technique, although that might have had something to do with it and I was getting a little demoralised but now I will continue with my Pablos and a bit more confidence and leave the Holbeins as finishing layers.

You are very welcome! I’m sorry to hear you’ve been having such a hard time with using Pastelmat. It’s awful isn’t it when no matter what you do it just doesn’t seem to be working. I really hope these tips help make it a little easier for you. Like with trying out any new surface, it can take some time to get used to it and work out what works best for you. Hi Izzy, With regard to my comments yesterday, I followed your advice and.... Success!!!!!! I think I fell into the trap of believing that Pastelmat deserved my Holbeins, as they are my most expensive pencils, but I was wrong, they are the wrong pencils for this paper. Pablos definitely are the pencils to use. In fact, I have yet to find the right pencil/paper combination for my Holbeins. I will find it, although my pencils may be little stubs by the time I do. Thank you again, your videos are really easy to follow and I'm learning something with each viewing.

Hi, oh that’s amazing, I’m so pleased to hear that my advice has helped you. Thank you for letting me know. I love being able to share my knowledge and teach people and it’s wonderful to hear that my videos are easy to follow and helpful. I’ve not used Holbeins myself as yet, so I’m afraid I can’t recommend a paper for them. My favourite pencils are the Luminance and Lightfast which I like to use on papers such as Stonehenge and Hahnemhule Nostalgie paper. I’ve also been adding more Pablos to my collection as they’ve really been growing on me, particularly for using with paper like the Pastelmat. Anyway, I hope you are now able to enjoy using the Pastelmat and do some lovely drawings. 😊
