In this video, we will go over 5 serious R-Pod travel trailer problems to avoid. Each of these issues I have personally had to deal with in time and money, and in many cases frustration on my 2017.5 R-Pod 179. No sugar coating here of my ownership experience and the hope is that if you own or plan to own an R-Pod from my era, you will at least be aware of these problems and potentially fix them preemptively.

We bought the Forest River Wildwood 22 foot travel trailer new in May 2022. Even though it's not an R-Pod, it shares many of the flimsy build qualities. Biggest concern so far has been the 43 gallon fresh water tank pushing it's way out of the underside of the trailer. Turns out it's only supported by two thin nylon straps and the "Access-abelly" plastic panels, which are inadequate to support 350 pounds of fresh water. So I purchased two square tubular steel bars and bolted them to the frame under the fresh water tank and this took care of the problem. Didn't even bother checking the warranty as I don't like others working on my rig (I am a full-time RVer) and have never had an "RV Tech" work on any of my campers. Thanks for this video.

Great video John, I have a 2015 RP-179 with about 60,000 miles on it including Boston to Alaska I have dealt with all but the sagging floor in kitchen area and leak in storage area. When my WFCO converter failed after 2 years I replaced it with a Progressive Dynamics PD 4655 converter/charger, it has worked flawlessly. With all the issues we have had we love our 179 it is perfect for 2 people and tows easily with our 2015 Nissan Frontier. Keep up the good work it is very much appreciated.

I have enjoyed all of your experiences with your Rapid 179,and have used your experiences to repair and maintain our 2017 R Pod 180. We have replaced the Wfco converter three times, repaired the black water bracket as well as encountering the spongy floor.The floor issue has yet to be repaired,but with your excellent description of the repair process, I am sure that it will be resolved. Forest River was of little help, and certainly did NOT over build our model.The dealer from whom we purchased the unit was excellent and very helpful.Kudos to them.Other than a lack of build quality, our travels in the 180 have been extremely enjoyable.We have traveled almost 50,000 km in the last 5 years, COVID not withstanding, and We look forward to having many more adventures in the coming years. Hey John, I just got my hands on a 2022 tandem axle R-Pod 201. Many specs haven't been finalized as I don't believe it is available to the general public yet. I believe the tandem axles help with vibration and make for a smoother ride. However, the power converter looks like it is located in the same location as yours. They have fixed the black tank hanger issue; the screws are sufficient in length and there are two hangers that make the black tank outlet more secure. The black tank hanger on my 2017 R-pod 180 failed several times and spilled black water all over the highways, so I am glad they fixed this. I have not noticed any moisture build up in the cargo hold either, but I don't use it, so I filled it with insulation and cardboard. Another great video, John.

Great video, thanks for sharing! I found the black and gray water outlets were in place, but they were not secure, very loose. Could be from road vibration, or lack of tightening down from the manufacturer. Either way, I used nylon straps form ratchet tie downs. Easy fix and looks great. Thanks again

Thanks John for this video and your many other videos that provide a lot of clarity on many different rpod/rv issues. I too have just noticed some sag on our 2018 177 which will need to be addressed. I also just encountered an issue that could have been very dangerous. I don't know if the 179 would have this issue due to its layout, but I imagine this could be an issue for many models. I happened to pull back the bed plywood on our rpod the other day and noticed that the propane hose and also 120 wire were chewed up from two long, sharp screws that hold some of the wood together by the water pump and go through into the bed frame/panel wood. The rubbing from vibrations during travel nearly cut clear through the propane hose insulation and also cut the wire insulation. Considering the hose is right next to the heater, this could have easily created a massive fire if it suddenly started to leak when the heater was on. I can't believe FR would use long screws in this area. Do you think this should be posted to some regulatory authority as a known hazard? I plan to contact Forest River. Also, do you happen to know who the Forum Admin is for the Rpod Owners' Forum. I registered over a week ago, but my membership hasn't been activated yet. I'd like to post it there to suggest folks check their hoses but I'm not able to until it's activated.
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci Год назад
James, that sure seems like a serious hazard. You could report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration which issues recalls for the RV industry. As far as the owner's forum, Furpod is the group moderator, but it is a fully volunteer outfit, so it might take a bit of time to get included. Usually he is pretty good about it. Thanks!

Glad it was helpful! I have generally enjoyed my R-Pod and I think that if most owners of the later teen model years work through these issues, they will be much better for it. All this is to say, you may not have any of these issues. All the best!

I would not get a camper at all them. They are all crap. If you are not good at fixing things yourself then stay away. I have owned 7 different campers and all of them I had to fix alot of stuff myself. It like he mentions a solder failure point on the AC to DC Converter. I would just fix this myself and make it better. I don't care for forest river products but like the design of the rpod. Might buy a used one to tinker with.

Thank you John. We all appreciate what you do to keep us Rpodders informed. We had initially wanted a 179, but finally decided on a new 2020 191 (HRE, built July 2019). The most exasperating thing we experienced at first was the blinds falling off the walls even after the dealer "mounted them more securely". I fixed the problem after that. And the slide would lose it's syncronizing ability and jam crooked when sliding it out or in. working a lot of white lithium grease into the gears and rack and pinion rails seems to have cured that. We will see. Did lose the black tank drain, so check mark on the "right of passage" there. It didn't grind down far enough that I was spilling contents, but did need to replace the end and cap. I agree whole heartedly with your tire recommendation. The OEM tires are cheap. and as soon as I can justify it, I will be replacing with much better tires. Overall, I have been very pleased with the unit. I can tow it with my 2500 pickup for the longer distance road trips, or my old Jeep Cherokee, for when we are exploring further outback trails here in Idaho. I do take very careful care of it, but it does get used hard, and mostly boondocking. I have the parts for, and will be adding, a second 20 gallon water tank in the "saggy floor" area, so now I will incorporate a reinforcement when I do that this spring. And probably outrigger supports under the slide area. Again thank you.
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci 2 года назад
Thanks for the comment. It sounds like you are keeping up-to-speed on the maintenance of your R-Pod. The HRE models tend to be better built than the east coast version, so you may not need the added outriggers. A good look with a combination square will let you know pretty quickly. Thanks again for commenting, all the best!

@@thomasvotrain7837 The blinds that were falling off were just screwed into the wallboard. Not anything solid. I used a stud finder, and also calculated where the frame members in the walls are. (Basically framed around the windows) Found the best spot, and screwed them into the framework instead of into the hollow foam insulated areas. They aren't in exactly the same position as they were, but I was also careful to fill the old holes with some caulk, and placed the blinds where they would hide the old holes.

@@thomasvotrain7837 Happy to help. I still, 2 years later. still love my rpod. I also seem to remember some small L-brackets ( like you find at the hardware store) the dealer used, and I reused to help hold the blinds up. But the key is finding some structure behind the wallboard to fasten to. First trip this season involved some pretty rough roads/trails. The blinds hung in there. I have a 2020 R-Pod 196, and the strap on the black tank broke about 30 miles from a campground last April. I'm not sure how long it had been dragging on the ground, but luckily the tank was empty. I was able to zip tie it back together, and then a mobile tech came and fixed it after I arrived at the campground. Then, last August, I went to the FROG Rally in Elkhart, IN, and the service technicians reinforced it even more, plus did the same for the gray tank. It is very frustrating to realize how many things in the trailer are made so cheaply. I'm still happy with the 196. Overall it has been a great choice for my first RV.

Thank you John. We have a 2011 RP-177 that we just took out of 3+ years of outdoor storage. It has developed a soft front floor while my cargo area (in the rear under the bed) has remained high and dry. Looking for the source of the leak. Looks like the driver's side front lower corner is loose, screw holding the moulding clip in the lower corner is floating in the wood, so it must be rotted through. That corner houses the power inverter and just like your discovery, the trim is missing in that compartment and the vinyl is curled up there. Hope it's all still salvageable!

Thanks for the info! We are looking for small camper possibilities, because our Lexus with the tow package can only handle 3500 GVW. Slide outs are mentioned frequently as an issue, mostly for getting stuck in the out position. Your info may actually be a major cause of those issues, if they don't have suficient support. Makes me think I don't want to bother with slide outs at all, and just live with less floor space.

If you don’t plan on upgrading your tow vehicle, you may indeed want to consider a trailer without a slide as it will also keep weight down. I actually travel with a spare, yet I haven’t had my replacement fail since installing it. Part of the issue may be cheap tires at max inflation make the ride hard in the cabin. My newer Goodyear Endurance tires don’t need max inflation and provide a much less jarring experience in the cabin. Thanks!

John, first of all, great job putting together an amazing collection of tips and fixes for the R-pods! Really well produced. We have a 2019 RP-176 and have had already had many of the issues you cover but still love it. The question I have is regarding tire pressure. You mention that your upgraded tires (rated 80 psi) give you a smoother ride. I'm curious what pressure you run them at. We've recently upgraded tires and the shop filled them to 80 psi. Do you still run yours at 65 psi? Even lower? The R-pod's structure as well as all the components will be much happier with a smoother ride.

Thanks much for these videos. Sadly, we purchased a new Rpod 196 and have had problem after problem-a poorly hung pantry door that flies open during travel, blinds that won’t stay shut, a faulty showermizer that prevented water flow, a piece of laminate peeling up, striker plate on the door with screws stripped, cabinet doors with screws stripped on hinges and coming loose, and glops of adhesive everywhere it didn’t need to be. We are now seeing stains of putty or adhesive appearing on the walls and roof. Some of this is our fault for not inspecting the unit more closely on delivery. And the dealer was of no help until we contacted Forest River directly. We regret now selling our 2017 Rpod 179, which was of much better quality than this 2021 model. I used to love rpods, but never again. The quality and attention to detail just isn’t there, in my opinion. We’ve been told that rvs were too quickly thrown together during covid. BTW, we have owned this 196 only five months and have used it three times.

Danny, I think the converter issue may partially be due to the hard ride from the stock tires. It sounds like a bigger issue with the electrical system than the converter. Are you using a surge protector on the outlet that feeds the trailer? I am not an electrician, but if you are tripping things, it sounds like a current problem at the source feeding the trailer.

Thanks John! Amazing I haven't seen any of your top 5 issues on my 2018 179 HRE yet but have sure had my share of minor ones mostly due to poor interior assembly practices and one minor one that turned into a major one because of a screwed up first year warranty repair by the dealer. I am mostly confused as to why I haven't see the kitchen floor softening or the converter go out yet? Maybe having the HRE that is built in Oregon has something to do with it? For example the HRE come standard with several corner brackets on the slide side frame and maybe the additional clearance and different tires on the HRE helps reduce the converter vibration as I've sure driven it on a lot of rough forest service roads! You mention the problem on the converter is a soldier joint coming undone and it would interesting if you have a photo showing location of the bad joint circled so it might be easily repaired by resoldering the joint rather than the expense of putting in a new converter?
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci 2 года назад
Mike, it sounds like the HRE doesn’t have any of the same build and floor support issues. Likely it was constructed more robustly given its stance for a more rugged use case. As far a the converter, likely the HRE rides better and doesn’t jostle the cab as much. I do not know the location of the solder issue but other owners have commented that this is the issue. I think the HRE does have some structural improvements over the standard model but only time will tell as it sounds like you use your R-pod much more than me? Since most converter failures seem to be about losing the ability to charge the batteries I am going to bring my trickle charger just in case and am plugged into shore power. Do you know when driving with the camper if the tow vehicle alternator directly charges the batteries or is it still through the converter?
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci 2 года назад
@@mhfnet Mike, I haven't studied a wiring diagram on how the TV alternator charges the battery, but I am fairly sure that it would not go through the converter since the purpose of such is to convert 30/50 amp shore power to 12 volt. Since the current from the TV is already in 12 volt, there would be no need to convert it. I always carry a battery charger with me and it is a great idea to travel with one. FYI, I had just about 200 nights the R-Pod when the kitchen floor bounce issue began to show. My guess is that the HRE had to have better structure due to the lift of the axles and general purpose of the unit when built. Not sure you will have the same issues. Thanks and all the best!

White lithium grease on the tracks works wonders to help the slide work properly. A small tube at the auto parts store for 3-4 bucks. Can use it on a lot of other stuff also though. I wrestled with mine for a long time, dealer was no help, forums were no help. With the slide out, smear a liberal amount into the tracks. run it in and out a few times, re-smear, run a few times, wipe off excess. Did this last year, hasn't had any trouble since.

David, it sounds like your Jeep's alternator is only supplying enough power to keep the Jeep charged and is not adequately passing juice back to the R-Pod via the 7-Pin connector when in transit. The Pod is likely drawing down the battery in transit given the fridge is drawing from the battery. I know of a fellow RU-vid creator (Sean with Loloho) who had to add a bigger alternator and then a later DC/DC charger. It sounds like it is coming from the seal failing on the bathroom fan. I am assuming this is an R-Pod with a large high-speed fan in the ceiling of the bathroom? If you are certain the fan cover is tightly closed, the problem may be at the fan seals on the roof. It is very possible that the caulk has failed, allowing water into the cabin. Unfortunately, this isn't an easy fix without having someone go on the roof and caulk around the fan shroud. Sorry, you are having this issue. Do you want to sell it and get another (if you haven't already)?
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci Год назад
Those are not easy questions. I am not a fan right now mainly because they still don't have composite floors, so if you do have a leak, the floors can be a real trouble spot. I sold my R-Pod 179 last May and overall had a very mixed ownership experience over five years. The newer models likely don't have the same structural issues (outriggers, floor sag, etc.), so as long as you are aware of what materials are used and where the weaknesses are, you may be fine. Pricing is an issue as everything is much more expensive for new RVs just now vs a few years ago. On the other hand, I never had a component fail. Hope this helps.

We’ve had our 2013 Rpod 172 for 10 years now and can honestly say we have not had any of these problems. The converter issue is one of my biggest pet peeves about how these things are manufactured. A dealer will tell you that things will break on your rig because every time you move it you are subjecting the rig to a 6.0 earthquake. This sounds reasonable, until you consider the fact that moving these rigs from place to place is their sole reason for being, that is what they are supposed to be made to do. Breakage during this process just shows how most of these rigs are not designed or built good enough. This is kind of like going to buy a boat, and the salesman telling you that the boat will be great, just as long as you don't get it near water...

Isn't it absolutely pathetic that the "engineers" at Forest River couldn't have designed this small camper to address these issues that they probably knew about in the first production year. Another example of the "engineers or designers" never bother to actually live in their own creation.

Excellent articulation of a major underlying issue in the industry. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Not a used late model one unless it has these things taken care of by the prior owner or you can do these things and get a price reduction for the work involved.

If you can get a pre 2020 build, they are as good as any. My 2020, built July 2019 is of reasonable quality for the price point these are at. I have had worse. Except my 2004 Fleetwood Pioneer. That thing was a tank!

600,000 RV shipped in 2021, 1.8% unemployment in Elkhart IN in May, and you can see why quality is a problem. This goes to the entire business model of piece work and speed of production. It isn't just FR. I recently bought an RV that went back to the factory 4 times in four months for warranty work. I fully understand the frustration. Thanks!

Mine was pretty good except the floors, which is no small deal. I would agree that the structural materials used are subpar at least. Caused a lot of stress. Been happier since selling it!
