If they got rid of conferences then there would be no argument every year of who's the better team bc they would have to go through reasonable brackets with the best 16 teams in the NBA. Not to mention the possibility of much harder and entertaining to watch series way before the finals.
Dom2k true but if you think about. 16 team bracket this year like the ncaa style how did it?. would be awesome. like say if the Timberwolves made it 16. could you image the GSW vs a up and coming Twolves sqaud. Image D.rose vs CP3 in a playoff game. Lebron vs Durant before the finals. THE new Cavs vs the New Squrs. you still should send it in
Dom2k Dj from total drama lmao. my nickname is dj so it's fitting. check out my page. I post 2k content. AND BRING BACK THE 3 KINGS i loved that series.
I think conferences should stay in the regular season but have no effect in the playoffs. Which ever team would be the top in the East and West for the regular season would be the Conference Champions but it would play no effect in the playoffs and it would be the 1st seed Vs the 16th, 2nd seed Vs 15th seed, etc.
But then when one conference is stacked the other conference is gone have an advantage reaching the playoffs. They should just have every team play every team 3 times, instead of 4 in theirs and 2 in the others.
Yeah I think they should have every team play against each other 3 times, I just think you could still keep the conferences as an extra thing that doesn't affect the playoffs or the amount of times they play against each other. It would just be weird to have no more conference champions as for as banners go but it's whatever
Scheduling and travel would be a nightmare if you had teams from different conferences facing each other in the playoffs. 6 hour flights every two days plus training, practice and games would fatigue a lot of players and lead to sub-par play. It's a good idea in theory but the execution would be extremely troublesome.
+Nod Nek I agree. The one thing never mentioned in the vid was the divisions. I think the divisions are really outdated and shouldn't matter to the playoff picture. Idk how many teams I've seen scraping by with well below .500 records making the playoffs over the much more deserving teams.
I agree that conferences should be abolished and that every team should play each team three times, it would also be cool if the top seeds were able choose their opponents, shout out to mike korzemba
This was a good time to make this video because many believe the conferences have balanced out, but despite that, I still managed to find some reasons I think its just time for conferences to go in the NBA. that would be stupid because ok then we would see most of the western teams in the finals then the eastern would die ok well you'll probably say well the better teams will prevail anyway nope I don't wanna see that I want to see conference because that makes me feel better any debate I got more this just my first point
Dom2k I don't think 16 format would be as good as divisional. Look at the nfl and their playoff races. Expansion teams are bound to happen with the rate the nba is growing so it can work. The rivalries that could be formed is crazy. (Example) Imagine an Nba and Aba conference and Boston and La are in Nba conf. They both been battling the last games to clinch a wild card spot and both get it. You could have them playing a wild card series against each other and still continue to play other good teams. Also it would make regular season games matter much more for teams to lead their divisions. Just a thought
Dom2k I completely stand by your idea and its great I hope they do eliminate conferences but how could you categorize each side to then get a champion of each side to then play the finals?
wassupguy1 The Universe in which the Seahawks ran the ball, is the same universe where Chris Paul was traded to the Lakers and the Cubs still haven't won a championship
If we got rid of the NBA conferences, Lebron wouldn't make it to 6 straight NBA finals. He would have to face real teams like OKC Thunder, Nash's Suns, Kobe's Lakers, Nowitiski's Mavs, Nuggets with Billups and Melo, and especially the Spurs
the problem will be is fatigue. he wont be able to keep it up against those team esp if his team will be 8th seed. he was practically cruising in the eastern.
FizzySummer776 because the league would be difficult to understand when you have a bunch of teams just in one slot how would they do the playoffs it confusing but the league will never do this rule because it will be confusing and they will lose money.
how would they lose money? nobody even bothers watching the east playoff games because we all know lbj is gunna win, if theres better matchups more fans, more small market teams would get recognition, and how is it confusing? it's the same exact format, just that theres 16 teams not 8
Fox Gaming, 1 vs 16, 2 vs 15, 3 vs 14, and this list goes on, it's not that confusing. It'll be better to see the best vs the best than to see a garbage to even in the playoffs. Don't u think having a sorry team in the in the eastern conference (knowing that it's not better than some teams in the west) vs the best team, than just a team that could better than the sorry team when you gather the top 16 teams in the league. That'll make more money. I don't want to see Cavs vs Brooklyn, I want to see Cavs vs okc ( if they fall that low)
Nah, Lebron would probably be 3/3 or 3/4. Most of the times he lost were the times when he shouldn't of been there in the first place. Like in 08 or 15 when he had no teammates. Would've not had to go to the finals with teams that didn't stand a chance and he would've been able to avoid dumb loses.
i think he would be 3-1 or 3/4 2007 - no finals 2011 - yes, L 2012 - yes, W 2013 - yes, W 2014 - no (injuries) 2015 - no (injuries) 2016 - yes, Biggest W all time The cooler part is that he would be 3-1 in finals W's and L's after the 2016 NBA finals, after coming back from 3-1 lmao
Ppl might not realize this but when Lebron came to the league even with his terrible Cavs they still had the best record in the east which shows u just how weak the east has been since MJ left
Condom Maniac I mean I never said he wasn't but I'm just saying Lebron had a trash ass team and still had a 60 win record somehow and I'm not even a Lebron fan
Brandon Lake please not one player has ever been that good not even MJ or Kobe but a trash team gets a 60 win record one season he did it once and every other time they just somehow barely made playoffs but still I wouldn't call it all that if he did that why couldn't he win the title if he played his ass off as soon as he played the Spurs in the finals got his ass swept
I think the only problem is the traveling issues. If the Warriors and let's say like the Celtics were matched up in the first round this year. They would either have to make the playoffs last longer so the teams have a day of rest after traveling or it just wouldn't work out. That's the only problem I see with the no conference thing other than that I'm all for the conferences to go
I think the solution to that is that if you get rid of the conferences, there's the possibility that there'd be fewer regular season games. Let's say you have to play each team twice, then maybe 3-4 games against a division rival, you'd have 62-66 games for the regular season. That would give the NBA an additional 1 month for the playoffs, hence being able to afford extending the playoff schedule.
@@marioflores5230 Id say 66 games then a team would play the other 29 teams twice then the last 8 games is just selected based on tv ratings and matchups. Two of those games should be played against the teams above and below a team in last years league standings.
? The East has Cleveland, Toronto, Pacers, Celtics, Bulls, Knicks. Are any of those guys gonna beat Cleveland? More than likely not, but the rosters are actually looking good and competitive now whereas before it was just teams full of role players.
***** What does have to do with the rest of the conference being around equal power? Is anybody going to beat the Warriors in the West? "Probably not" That doesn`t mean the other teams aren`t competitive with each other. That's the difference in this year and last year, last year the East was just a bunch of mediocre teams after Cleveland. This year some of those guys like Paul George and Melo actually have a squad.
Dom2k Clippers and especially the Spurs have more than just a puncher's chance to beat the Warriors in a best of seven series. The Pacers are pretty much the same Pacers we seen for damn near a decade. Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah? One is injury prone and the other hasn't shown any above average talent since beating Ohio State in 2007. The closest thing to competition is the Bulls, but Wade is past his prime and I don't see Rondo giving the assists out he should be as a point guard. Especially to a guy that dislocated his shoulder a few years ago.
Dude pls, Im brazilian, and here they thought that the way we played soccer was "old and needed ajustments so it would make it more just for those who were the better teams" and it ruined the brazilian soccer championship, because eventually they eliminated the playoffs and the best regular season teams won the championships. This is suicide, because well, the essence of the game is basically the playoff rush, and they already changed it here in Brazil, dont let it do the same for you guys. Sorry about my terrible and rusty english, hope you get my point.
Keep regular season conferences,(traveling is still an issue. That's why teams will have long ass road trips covering the teams in California if it's an East team) But I've been wanting the best 16 for a while. The Suns once had a 50-32 season and didn't make the playoffs, but a trash sub 500 team made the playoffs in the east. Totally unfair and unbalanced.
I agree, keep the conferences, but the playoffs is straight 16. I will say this, in the regular season if a team knows that they can finish over .500 they do tend to not play as hard in the final weeks of the season...
How about a 15 seed play off instead of 16 and the first seed doesn't have to play a first round game as a reward for being 1st seed. This would encourage teams to try harder. Plus this would make more sense since the league is 30 teams 15 is a nice division of 30.
Nestility No but the first seed comes back in during the second round and plays the lowest that's left so it would still be a 15 seed but since one team is dropped the 1st seed gets a break.
I wish they could try in to win a lot of games in the regular season if that would help good teams try and win more games than I guess. winning 70+ games must take a lot out of teams, that explains losing when up 3-1.
Great video sir, very well thought out. Brought up some excellent points. My only counter point would be there is truly only ever 3-4 teams that could win it all any given year. So if a 9th/10th seed in the west is better than the 8th seed in the East it ultimately doesn't matter. But i do like the idea of better match ups through out the playoffs.
Maybe keep the regular season matchups, meaning Western Conference teams playing each other more often as they do today. But have the playoffs seeded as shown in this video, based on their record regardless of conference.
To add to what Dom's saying, I reckon the NBA should keep conferences for the regular season, but not playoffs. Think about it, say if you win the conference, you get a guaranteed top 2 place in the 16 seeds. This would add extra competition and bragging rights to get the top spot in the conference, which would lead to teams such as the Cavs backing off at the end. You might still end up with the top of each conference in the finals due to home court but there would be way more "upsets". Say the 2nd seeded team out of 16 finishes with a 55-27 record, but the 3rd finishes with 58, 4th with 57 and 5th with 56. This would lead to a 2v3 semis, which if the 3 had the better record, then an upset could occur. Just an idea.
Let's look at different season - the 1995-96 season. The East has 9 teams in top 16 no conference (Bulls, Magic, Pacers, Cavs, Knicks, Hawks, Pistons, Heat and Hornets), while the West has 7 (Sonics, Spurs, Jazz, Lakers, Rockets, Blazers and Suns). OK, that's pretty much even in terms of East-West representation. But let's see how the brackets will be: 1. Bulls - 16. Hornets; No contest - the Bulls will win by landslide 8. Rockets - 9. Cavs; Here, I call it a win for the Rockets which will give us Jordan vs. Hakeem in the 1/4 Finals 4. Spurs - 13. Blazers; IMO Spurs win 5. Jazz - 12. Pistons; Win for the Malone and Stockton Jazz 3. Magic - 14. Heat; Win for Orlando 6. Lakers - 11. Hawks; Not sure - in real life the Lakers lost to the Rockets, while the Hawks beat the 7 seed Pacers in 5. I'll give the W to the Lakers though based on their Head to Head record, but the Hawks could pull an upset 7. Pacers - 10. Knicks; As stated IRL the Hawks beat the Pacers in 5, but the Knicks eliminated the Cavs in 3. I'm willing to give the Knicks the win 2. Sonics - 15. Suns; Win for Seattle In the next round we'll have matchups like Bulls v Rockets, Spurs v Jazz, Magic v Lakers and Knicks v Sonics. Bulls, Magic, Spurs and Sonics IMO would've advanced and the semis would be East v West and these 4 teams were the best 4 teams in the league that season. Still the Bulls would've won the title anyway whether they faced Kemp and Payton's Sonics or Shaq and Penny's Magic
If conferences weren't a thing we would see playoff LeBron throughout the whole season which would then give a fair indication of how good the Cavs actually are. Their 51-31 season this season isn't a fair indication of how good they are. They would have to try otherwise they would end up finishing lower and have to play a tough West team like GSW, Spurs, Houston, OKC or Clippers first or second round which would lead to them being eliminated.
General Maudy why is that? the top 8 teams in each conferences should play each other based on record not because a team won the division so they are automatically a 3 seed for instance but really they are the 6th or 7th best team in the conference but they have homecourt... thats fucked up ma dude.
jonathan burack why you replying to me about this. Its obvious the fucked up part was him saying i hope you didnt make a video. Not his opinion about the divisions. Which i agree with. You just wasted your time explaining all that to me because i already agree
I completely agree with the fact conferences should be revised and the east ain't trash but the Lebrun ain't got too many challenges in getting to the finals these last few years / the fact a lot of great match ups never go head to head like Kobe Lebron.
And it would also promote more competitive play during the regular season b/c teams would have to play their best players more as opposed to resting them (think of Clev, SAS, GSW) in order to get a top seed which will help them avoid the other best teams in the early rounds. I really don't know why there's still conferences! Heck, it's even better from a business point of view!! More competitive play=More filled up Arenas+more viewership!!! I'm sure there are tons of other pros aside from what Dom explained to get rid of them dumb conferences. Great video btw Dom, just discovered your channel and really like your content. You're very underrated! I consider you a youtube "star" and hopefully become a "SuperStar" soon :)
I love what the WNBA did this season by not using a conference format in the playoffs this year. It was great and we finally got a LA sparks vs Minnesota Lynx matchup in the finals and it's a great matchup. The exact format I don't think would work in the finals but I definitely think getting rid of cofnerences would be great.
It should be divisional like nfl and there shouldn't be an east west split but rather something like nfc/afc you'd have unpredictable seasons which would make the regular season actually matter as trams would constantly be in playoff races. Right now you have top 8 in each conf then all the other nubs that don't matter. I think it would be way more entertaining having divisional races and races for wild card
+lil eiht ball but then you would have two a bunch of teams not making the playoffs that should like Toronto and Boston are in the same division and only one of them would make the playoffs when both would deserve it
Samuel Laboy ya but in a best 16 you already know who will win and for the top 10 teams the regular season is practically meaningless. With divisional seeds you actually have playoff races making for more intense games.
@@bigbean6062 The playoffs should only have the top 10 or 12 teams based on league record. Regular season should be a 60 game season where the last 2 games are extra games for tv ratings like a rematch of the championship. Each team will play everyone twice.
I don't want conference only in the playoffs because you have to think about the all star team. If the whole conference thing was gone there would be no East vs West in the all star weekend.
Conferences should be ditched for the system. Too much predictability and weak conferences in todays NBA. I really wish for more exciting games. How will schedules be created though without the existing system of conferences and divisions?
60 Games in a Season every Team plays every other team two times we dont need 82 Games to know who the best team is . If there less Games there are also less injuries and Teams have the best players still in there Team.
It also take out playoff fatigue factor too. The 2015-2016 playoff saw the 73-9 Warrior having to fight their way through so many obstacles for one reason or another ... ultimately having to face a surprisingly crazy OKC squad ... and then went on to play the Cavalier who nearly swept the entire conference :\
the NBA is almost forced into keeping conferences because if you ditch them you also ditch a lot if nba history and value a conference brings. like a team like toronto this year that made their first ever conference final. it's a big deal to these teams
I think today you can add a sixth reason. You want to reward teams for winning regular season games. With no conferences, it punishes tanking or throwing games. When you can't really predict the matchups you're going to have throughout the playoffs, it's going to matter whether you're seeded. You just wouldn't have a situation where the Cavs feel so pretty about their opponents that they can coast to a mediocre 51-win record. If all the teams had a relatively balanced schedule, you know Cavs would have tried to win a few more games so they didn't have to be the 5th seed (or worse after tie breakers) and not have home court against any of the contenders.
Dom CLE would of beaten SAS the 2014-2015. Why I say this because Kevin love wouldn't have ever gotten injured that year because CLE wouldn't have face BOS as shown in your graph and if you remember Olson pulled K. Love's arm out of its place. Which means he would of been healthy to face SAS.
Dom2k idk about that because they have better perimeter defense than the clippers with a decent inside presence and this is the year they fell to the clippers for reasons unknown they were just off and you could see it and i believe had not kyrie and kevin got hurt last year kyrie would have arrived sooner than now. P.S. Kyrie & Westbrook are gonna lose it this year!
I think another point the NBA considers for keeping conferences is they don't want a certain region to not have a playoff team since that would hurt the TV markets.
just sharing an opinion bro. he's not saying it cause he expects it to change, he's saying it cause he wants to get his thoughts out there and see what other people think. dont be an idiot.
I don`t recall tagging the NBA or indicating that I wanted them to watch this.. I think I was just uploading an opinion or thought provoking video Ya know, like most people do on RU-vid
Kevin Jones it would be more exciting tho. hell march madness has its upsets and Cinderellas. a 16 seed beating a 1 sees would be more entertaining and bring in more viewers probably
How do you only have 30k subs? You are one of the best basketball RU-vidrs besides mike korzemba and nick smith. You should have around 100k. Keep doing what you're doing because you're vids are amazing
Since the 60s the only west teams to won titles came from California texas or Seattle who don't exist...besides Portland.. Once ..mavs once rockets twice warriors 3 tones...spurs and lakers have 10 titles since 1999 and 15 since 1980...
absolutely agree, Nba needs to get with the times this isn't the 50's anymore, the best of 16 would be amazing, it would actually be great for the league, the east playoffs barely get 300,000 views, every round would be worth watching if it was best of 16, it's a shame we only see great matchups once every 5 years, idk why nba doesn't do it, the ratings would go up, do they realize there is a fanbase besides lebron james, i seriously think that's why, they rather have us watch lebron sweep the east as long as he makes the finals because theres a chance he could lose in the first round if he had to play teams like dallas instead of garbage like the bucks or hawks
Some would argue that a "1-16, 2-15, 3-14, 4-13..." would make the first round incredibly boring. In order to close that gap, the bracket should be set up like so: "1-9, 2-10, 3-11, 4-12..." That would lead to a more competitive first round as well as a fair system and interesting match-ups throughout.
I enjoyed this video. you should definitely send your idea or push this idea to the NBA. matter of fact we all should push this idea if you truly want to see this happen !!💪👍👍👌👌👏👏
Conferences should not be gone, realignment should be fix. For example the Pelicans should be in Southeast and the Wolves should be in the Central. The realignment the balance free agency should be the focus. Good video my brother.
u think LBJ would be in the finals if his team wouldv played lets say SAS and a team like clipers before finals ? for 6 straight years ? no way ,,, East is so weak for a long time now .... only now the raptors are are going up others still dont have enought for big 3 in cleveland so ye... 8spot in EAST is nearly like the 3rd last or 4th last in West meaning 500 team or less
if there is no conference, actually it would work in the favor of lebron. he has been critisized heavily for his 3-4 records. now if he needs to face the best of the best, he would probably be 3-1 instead of 3-4. the 3 rings in which he won can't be taken away. it means that he's at the absolute peak of his game and any team that he face can be defeated.
I wish the nba would just do this, it makes a lot sense. I've been wanting this for the longest time, it would make the playoffs way more entertaining.
Hey may I make a suggestion? Could you change the music selection into more of a hip hop/jazzy themed instrumental? Thanks bro, I really enjoy these videos. Keep it up man.
"Beat up on the Rockets" a series where 3 games were decided by 5 or less points and the Rockets beat the Clips and technically the Spurs (Beat the Clips then Spurs in Season Series) so Foh. Put some Respek on Houston's name
Visionary Productions exactly I'm from Cleveland the Spurs won 4 games but that's because we were outcoached every game within 4 points we didn't lose that bad. Plus the Spurs still beat the suns and the best teams so it doesn't matter when they beat them they're still beating the same teams. The trailblazers vs the wizards isn't the best facing the best
Here's something else to add to that idea... Add in neutral sites for the games to be played a la the NCAA's... 1 side of the bracket goes on the East Coast and the other side goes on the West Coast then the best seeded team in the Finals have home court in the last round to eliminate the travel concerns.
Without the conferences SAS & LAL would have won more rings, CP3 might even have a ring and MIA would have won 1 championship at best. Duncan would have retired a year early with the same record as MJ.
