In Britain, the EP3 Type R is beloved and is one of the best generations of the platform. Also...the EP3 has THE BEST shifter ever put in a Civic. Which is saying alot

@@dseriescivic4245 good to hear. Just picked up a em2 (03 civic ex) with like 111k on it. Beautiful shape not banged up. Threw some tein flex Zs on it just to replace the rusted leaky old OEM stuff. Love the car. Hoping to get 300k out of it as well. It is auto though. But I drive it like an old woman lol. Should be fine. Good luck with yours! I think the 7th gen coupes are the coolest looking civics. If they only had VX mileage tho lol.

I daily an 03 coupe. 208k and still no issues. A zippy little car that handles great. I never understood why so many people complained about the new suspensionn design (it handles just as well as the old one) and the D17 is a good motor. Not excessively powerful, but adequate for the car as previous gens were. Also, with a supercharger, beefed up rods, and an upgraded headgasket/headbolts they can push 350hp without a sweat. Easy to swap a K20 and 6-Speed from an RSX too.

You have your information wrong buddy . You don’t know about Honda’s lol .... by the way the ep3 your talking about is not a ep3 it’s a EP2 . The civic Si aka Ep3 has the k20A3 engine and the type r has k20A and the ep2 has de D series .
@GrandTouringConcepts
@GrandTouringConcepts 6 лет назад
In Canada the EP3 was the EP3, it was actually called the SiR (only in Canada) and it came with the K20A3. North America never got the Civic Type R that had the K20A, the closest thing we got to that was the DC5 Acura RSX Type S that had the very similar K20A2. The only civic that had the D series was the EM2 and ES1,2,3. I admit my knowledge may have been a big regionally based but it isn’t incorrect.

Seventeen years ago I bought EM2. Not even a month into owning it I noticed white smoke coming from the engine compartment, the engine was OVERHEATING! A year later the auto trans starts to overheat whenever I drive over an hour on the highway. In the seventeen years of owning it, I have had every problem that everyone has with their Civic, however I never had any of the issues fixed. Believe me, it just went away itself. I'm still driving the car today. I always tell people that the problem with the car is simply the ECU. If the ECU is faulty, it will cause problems. Kinda like the doctor telling you you're not well when you feel great. If you believe that you're sick like the doctor tells you then you're gonna feel sick.

My 02 lx has 300235 miles on it.Has went 90 miles per day,every day for 17 years.I changed the timing belt/water pump once.I put a head gasket in...last week,in my driveway.At 300000 miles.I would not call that"premature".I have several civics.Another 02,coupe an 07 ex.The best of them by far has been the 300000 miler.In nearly 20 years it has cost me nothing but oil changes and spark plugs.Still gets 38 mpg.Still does what the speedo has on it.There is nothing you can bash.It is what Honda intended it to be.If the"enthusists"want a fast tunable car...why are they even looking towards a economical reliable car?

I have five kids and all needed transportation. So to keep maintenance simple through high school and college they all had 7 generation Civics. A mix of LXs and DXs. In the past I have had as many as five Civic licensed and on the road at once for my wife, kids, and myself. In addition I had three for salvage parts. I agree with all you said, but the worst thing to me was changing the timing belts. Had one to break a timing belt and caused a very expensive valve job. The head gaskets were a problem (as you mentioned). There were good things about the cars as well, the first being the transmissions, never had a failure. I never really liked the way the outside looked but the inside had a good layout and the plastics, seats, carpet, and other materials held up well. Down to one child in college now so only have two Civics licensed.

Terrible? No, but subpar? Definitely. There is a reason why that most folks in 2005 were seriously considering the 2-door coupe Acura RSX Type S instead of the Civic Coupes or Sedans. The 2005 Si Hatchback just looked way too much like the minivan Odyssey too. And still many others were so relieved when the 2006 8th gen Civic Si came out, while others completely lost faith and bought Subaru Impreza WRX's. What the 7th gen could have been was a chance to move up the ladder and stand tall against the Focus ST completion, but instead the engineers designed the 7th gen to fight against the Toyota Corolla instead. Little did they know that the Corolla XRS and Matrix/Vibe would be impressive in their own right.

Already know I'm looking at a head gasket and timing belt change, so I'm looking for other options with an engine swap now. The ep3 was. And still is my first and only car. Now u made this comment a year ago and idk if u did get a civic or if you still haven't gotten a car. But if you haven't I would seriously recommend the ep3. It's got more power then a Honda fit at least and yeah it handles really well while stock. And I personally love the center mounted shifter. It just doesn't have arm rests so I'm long drives I tend to rest my arm on the shifter. Which I know is bad but if anything breaks I'll just fix it. It's got decent room in the back. But not as much as a fit. But if you put the back seats down u got plenty of room.

It’s the most direct of swaps but still isn’t as easy as the internet thinks. I would need an EP3 or RSX subframe, an EP3 radiator, axles, hubs, shift cables, other stuff I’m forgetting now. Short answer is, far from impossible but not exactly simple. If a good deal on a wrecked rsx type s comes along I would do it.

No you can tune a d17 ecu with a piggyback I know a few people who are running 15-20 psi with an aem fic6 you can also tune with a vafc2 but you cant get too much boost with them but they do work if you want to do light engine mods like a stage 1 or stage 2 cam and a y8 intake manifold swap. You don't need a kpro anyone who says you need one to tune a d17, sorry to say is an asshole fanboy and we all know fanboys ruined the car scene by being mentally stuck 20 years ago.

Yes the new one is a lot faster but corners are a different matter , the 7th gen can take corners with high speed because of the brilliant engeneering at the wheels that you forgot to mention and the new civic has to go sloooooow there and its made with junk materrial ...just grab the plastic wing of the new civic and you will understand by its flopping around what we are talking about... not to mention you can make it really easy into a really fast car because it has a lot of space under the hood that you also didn't mention.

Mine would overheat and lose coolant constantly, but it turned out it just needed a new radiator cap. 212k original engine and trans, never been touched. Seems the valves on these like to come loose every 20k though which can be a pain in the ass. I think the head gaskets fail when the cooling system isn't bled right (when coolant is changed and air is left in the system.)

Americans get the shit version of a lot of cars. Here in Australia My 01 7th gen was designed for the European market, has a better power to weight ratio than most non-sport/Type R models before or since, and has never come close to overheating even in 42 degree heat and stop-start traffic. I love driving it hard and it is tough as nails. The VI Hatch holds it's value very well and mine was a bargain at $2200 and 160 000ks. The only other ones for sale in my area at the same time were $3000 and $6000 - with the same mileage!

Dont care about tuning. You should changed your video title.
@GrandTouringConcepts
@GrandTouringConcepts 5 лет назад
We do care about tuning, that’s why we’re critical. To tune a D17 you need to find yourself an ECU out of an RSX or TSX or something else K powered. You need to send that ECU in to get it reflashed to work with a D17, you also need to change the cam gear to an adjustable one + a bit of fiddly wiring. All in that would cost about $1100 Canadian, and that would just get you a D17 running stock on a new ECU that can be tuned. On many other vehicles you can start tuning with the stock ECU. The point is that the stock ECU is completely locked down which creates an expensive first step towards tuning. Again, I (Matt) don’t hate these cars, I’ve had a couple of them for a 10 year period, they are comfortable perky economy cars, they get excellent fuel economy and make a great commuter. Like any car, after you spend a lot of time with it you begin to see it has a few flaws. Go on any Civic group, even a 7th generation group page and you will see how much people deride the 7th gen civic. It ain’t for no reason pal. Thanks for watching.
