Wow I am currently using a D5300 for video and was looking to upgrade to one of these 4K camera. But I guess lack of a tilting screen is a deal breaker for me, so will most probably go with GH5. Really wish that this had the tilting screen (which I know can be added externally).

yeah love my gh5s, build quality rocks, and 10 bit internal is good, but it's not raw. it'd be a really straightforward upgrade to have that. just got a Sound Devices mixpre 6 and it's an audio equivalent..for lowish price, missing some bells and whistles, you get magic pre-amps that give you sound you can push to the nth degree in post and attain broadcast or cinema quality.

Seems like a cage is necessary. Stick an external battery,sad and monitor and all its issues are gone

Seems like a watered down GH5 to me. I don't see an appeal in it due to already owning a GH5, but if I were just starting out the price point would be hard to beat. M43 lenses are some of the most expensive on the market though so you may think you're getting a great price until you start needing more than a kit lens for anything.

How about the Pause button ? can we use it? coz i had alot of problem using my canon to filming.i got much pause to do

Joaquim Gonsalves Hi, it doesn’t take EFs lenses as it is a M43 Mount but you can buy an adapter as cheap as $30 :)

So basically you get an affordable camera then have to invest $2-3k for decent lenses. M43 lenses are some of the most expensive on the market. I own a Gh5 and shelling out money for lenses hurts my soul. I recently purchased a Sigma 16mm f/1.4 and that's the best bang for your buck in that lens format currently, sadly. While EF lenses are easily in the $50-$100 range used all the time. In terms of price, EF > Sony E > M43. My only regret with using M43 is the expensive lens selection. And given how horrendously the GH5 focuses with an adaptor or speedbooster, I imagine the BMPCC probably has similar issues with using non-native lenses on an adaptor. You'd have to sacrifice fast and accurate focusing for a cheaper lens selection.

I recommend the Viltrox speed booster because it's cheap and will allow your M43 camera to access more light from your canon glass - although I have not tested it with EF-S (I only have full frame glass). If you only have EF-S glass and no FF glass, then get a cheap adaptor with no conversion. It's cheap and there will be no optical degradation. I'm loving the results with my FF glass on my MFT G9.

Canon is a nightmare. They have the technology to give us the best camera ever, but if they did that, no one would by their C-series cameras. Horrible company, although still better than Apple and RED.

I just hope that BMD doesn't give up on catering to the low end of the market due to the fact that so many STUPID people seem to occupy it and then make YT videos to put their stupidity on display.

slashcam just did a Z7 n-log video, looks very good indeed. I still think this is the better package, also hoping that bmraw is coming to it soon.

@@nordfresse Thank you. It is a bit frustrating because there has not been a robust demonstration of the 10-bit N-Log yet. The tid bits I have seen so far do look good though.

The potential of RAW is not it's image quality because compared to Prores you can't see much a difference but it gives you way more options and flexibility when it comes to post. (Color grading, Recovery, Keying, etc.) Never shoot losless CDNG Raw... Just wait for BRAW and shoot Prores or if you need it DNG 4:1 You can't get the High quality with smaller files.

thats part of why you can record directly to external hard drive as well. They're more than aware of how big the files from RAW and ProRes are.

@@evantracysounds768 Yes, I know... but it's not just about space, it's also about extra computing resources and time needed to process and work with such huge files, and as far as I know, that format isn't yet widely implemented in cinematography. For the moment it seems like a nightmare job to work with this camera, even if it may very well be "the best" video camera for the price.

The uncompressed bit rate for a 1920 x 1080 50i (4:2:2) digital image stream is 1.485 gigabits per second. The full chroma resolution version (4:4:4 sampling) is around 11.88 gigabits per second. (www.ti.com/lit/an/snla232/snla232.pdf) That's around 8.9 gigabytes of disk space for 1 minute of Full HD (1920 x 1080,50i 4:2:2) video, uncompressed. 4K would be around 35 GB per minute. The "exquisite codecs" are the h264 and mpeg 4 compression algorithms which bring the data rate down to 5 or 10 Mbps. RAW and CinemaDNG are not "insane" they are truer to the actual image being read from the camera sensor. They contain information and detail thrown out by the mpeg compression software, such as chrominance resolution, motion etc. Those highly compressed codecs are very good, but as a delivery mechanism. For professional post production you need less compression. If you are doing highly complex CGI integration with "green screen", the last thing you want is the chroma keying to have artifacts on the MPEG sample block boundaries when there is fast action. Editing software generally works faster with the less compressed codecs (presuming you have fast disk drives) as there is less processor overhead in decoding highly compressed MPEG source streams. I generally convert all my source footage (which may come from Canon 5D, 300C, 80D, GoPro, OSMO, etc) to ProRes422 and edit in ProRes, before converting the final export to the desire delivery format. For some jobs this might be VimeoHD, for other jobs an MXF wrapped 50Mbs broadcast file.

I upgraded from a Canon T3i about one year ago. I waited until the G7 went on sale from $797 to $497 (USD) and decided to go ahead and just buy two of them. I bought 2 for roughly $1,000 instead of one for roughly $800, so I basically upgraded to a 3 camera set up for an extra $200! B&H seems to run that sale often, too.

Check out the Panasonic GH series. They've been making mirrorless cameras with no record time limits for years. The GH5 and GH5s are probably the two most popular models right now. :D

photojournalistsf XT3 is best of both worlds. Shooting RAW is cool because of the flexibility, but having 10bit 4:2:2 in the XT3 is good enough for online content, I’m think of picking up an XT3 to replace my a7rii and a7sii, unless I wait for the a7siii with 10bit and better color science but highly doubt it

X-T3 is definitely the best for fast fieldwork, but for the technically-conscious the Blackmagic has broadcast features not available to hybrids (except the GH-series to some extent). I certainly agree that Fuji is the way to go for both photographers and videographers who focus on nimble imaging and release rather than production-heavy modes of operation, though.

@@The_Guth Be warned! XT3 is 10 bit 4:2:0, not 4:2:2! It's only outputs to HDMI the better chroma/color data. But still, both are amazing tools! I'll go with the pocket 4k.

Yes. Its nice. But: It should have has a VIDEO or CINE form factor. Like the BM micro cinema. A lot like the ZCAM E2. The box, and maybe a screen. But NOT THIS DSLR form factor which sucks. And the design id s little too futuristic

I haven't had any overheating issues at all.

I worked on a pilot a couple weeks ago as the B cam op, using this camera (A cam was an ursa mini 4.6k) We had some 8+ minute long takes with no overheating issues.

i have heard that the camera body gets a little bit hot, but the internal hardware keeps freshhhh

it is very hot at the bottom of the body and also the mount. it wont work in summer for long.

4/3 cameras will be the first to get better features even in the future, due to less overheating issues. You don't need to buy into their lenses, you can get a speed booster which will give you a S35 equivalent. Then you also can enjoy the upside of using smaller 4/3 lenses with more reach should you want a smaller set up. TV shows like The Walking Dead are shot on 16mm which is even smaller than Micro 4/3 which just goes to show sensor size isn't everything.

M43 mounts has more lens options than probably any other mount. There are things called adapters and speedboosters. You can get aps-c, super 35, and even full frame like footage with speedboosters. I would argue m43 mounts are here to stay.

Companies will make claims about their products that aren't entirely accurate to increase market appeal, but an informed consumer shouldn't put any stock in those claims. It is strictly a cinema camera. For some non-vlogger reviews and real world examples of it in use as it was intended (with a fair amount of humor added) check out ru-vid.com

eire138 I put more weight into the claims of what people over this camera say more than what random youtube commenter says about what the camera is suppose to be. At the price range a large chunk of its users will be vloggers, people over it said it was the perfect vlogging camera. Besides that, it doesn't matter, cinema cameras should have image stabilization, great autofocus and a flip out screen to see what you're filming at high and low angles

NewEsc Because it's a camera that gives you the opportunity to take control of it and make most out of it which can only be done in filmmaking where you can be in a position to take charge. When you are youtubing if that's even a word you can't be..you need too much auto auto auto..I guess.

I spend $1K on my first “real” camera which was in fact a rebel t3i. So if had to be 19 again, and have $1300 for this, I fracking would.

Get a Canon EOS m, the first one. Get magic lantern for it and buy an EF to m adapter. Learn on that. The camera can be had for 150 dollars now.

It's actually carbon reinforced polymer plastic, which is completely different to normal carbon fiber. It's a bit better than normal plastic, but doesn't come close to the strength of carbon fiber.

@@RedHatMedia When something is said to be made of "carbon fibre" it simply means carbon reinforced polymer as the carbon fibre itself is in form of a woven material which can't be used on it's own but in combination with plastic to form a composite material. So, my initial assertion still stands. Carbon reinforced polymer is what someone people call "carbon fibre" because it has carbon fibres in it. So this camera and Lamborghini aventador are made of the same material. No one is inferior to the other just that the shell of the BMPCC 4k would contain fewer layers of the carbon fibre material for a thinner mold.
