Mark Matlock (Executive Director of Youth Specialties) shares his heart behind why youth ministry is vital to the body of Christ in "5 Reasons The Church Needs Youth Ministry."
If you don't have time to watch the full video, here's a quick snapshot:
1) Youth ministry is vital to helping teens integrate into the larger intergenerational community of the church.
2) Youth ministry resists the status quo, helping a church stay relevant in a changing culture.
3) Youth ministry focuses on inviting those who are not already part of the church into the deeper narrative of God's plan for humankind.
4) Youth ministry reminds the church that teens are not marginalized members of the body, but are co-creators and conspirators in the divine work of the church, restoring life on earth as it is in heaven.
5) Youth ministry helps the church focus on the way of Jesus, which goes beyond tradition, dogma, and ritual.

Do you realize how he does not let scripture tell us why or why not we need youth ministry, when you look in scriptures the true youth minister is the Father and Mother who is responsible for raising up their son/daughter and if that youth does not have believing parents then it is the churches obligation to fulfill this role!

There is a lot of youth idol worship in the church. This guy and a lot of youth pastors worship youth LOL. This guy said you need youth to stay relevant with culture?.. What about the cross?

1. Youth ministry helps integrate with other age groups. 2. Resists the status quo - they ask important questions 3. Focuses on those who don't know Jesus 4. Reminds the church that they are part of the bigger plan of the church 5. Focuses on the way of Jesus which goes beyond traditions.

I definitely feel that Heart of God Church, Singapore is the best church in the world! Pastors that believe in youths and build character and culture from we were all 12/13. Youths can change the world! We are taught "We not just the leaders of tomorrow, but the leaders of today!"

I find it very interesting the amount of comments regarding the Biblical teaching of young people being the parents responsibility and not the role of youth ministry. At our church, which is quite small, none of the teenagers in youth group have parents who are Christians or part of the church. If they did not attend youth group (Bible study + social time) they would have no Christian contact anywhere else. Ideally young people would receive teaching and support from parents, the larger church, and smaller groups (which would help in dealing with more lifestyle issues and putting Biblical concepts they have learnt in to practice). I can empathise with young people feeling separate from the church, and also older teens leaving the community as they become adults. Those are issues that are very common place sadly.

What would happen if you went into youth group and announced?: ''Guys I read Ephesians 2:8-9 and then read on to verse 10. Then I read James verse 2:22-26. We got it wrong the only place the bible says' by faith alone' is to say NOT by faith alone but by faith and works TOGETHER are we saved! . . . . . . The Catholics are right!!!!!

These five reasons the church needs youth ministry assumes that youth ministry has a Biblical foundation. Not once did he use scripture to make that point. And this is the main reason his five reasons have no grounds. 1) You have teens integrate into the larger church by having them come to the main service with their parents. The parents and teens listen and study the Word together (2 Timothy 2:15) with the parents (particularly the Father) the ones that go home with the teens and discuss what was taught and then further have discipleship during the week (Deuteronomy 6:5-9 and Ephesians 6:1-4 as your guideline). 2) The status quo of a church is just fine if it is the Word of God because this is sufficient and inspired (2 Timothy 3:16-17). You can certainly have different administrations, but the core foundations of the preaching of the Word (2 Timothy 4:2), the sacraments (for instance, the Lords Supper per 1 Corinthians 11:20-25), fellowship (Hebrews 10:25), and other Biblically based practices. If the youth ministry resists all these things for games, entertainment, jokes, and separating the youth from their parents (all these things seem to be a staple of youth ministries), then it is actually not following the church. 3) The narrative of God's plan for mankind will never be known to an unsaved teen because they are carnal and don't understand spiritual things (1 Corinthians 2:14). They need to be transformed by the supernatural conversion of God per the gospel (Romans 10:9-17). This is harder to do when an unsaved teen is among their peers playing games with the Bible lesson as an afterthought. If these unsaved kids want the world, they don't need to see it in the church because they got it outside the church. And if you get them to the church through worldly means, you have to keep them there. They need the gospel message. 4) Young people aren't marginalized, but the assumption that they have no worth to older or more mature members assumes the church is ignoring the youth. If this is true, you don't segregate them from the parents and the elders, you admonish the church per Titus 2:1-8, where the younger goes through discipleship per the older. And as for them being co-creators, no! Only God is the Creator and sustainer of all things, particularly the second person of the Godhead, Christ (Colossians 1:15-18). We are certainly His workmanship (Ephesians 2:10), but not co-creators and conspirators. 5) Saying that youth ministry helps the church focus on Jesus is basically saying that they weren't focusing on Christ before youth ministry. Or that youths can't focus on Christ at the main service like they can at youth meetings. Is the youth ministry somehow able to articulate doctrines better than the lead pastor or elders of a church? And, by default, doesn't a separate youth ministry have their own traditions, dogma, and rituals? Pastors/teachers are given to the church to equip the saints in every aspect of their walk (Ephesians 4:11-16). We don't help them do their God-given job if we create a sub-church that has its own way of teaching, own way of doing music, and own way of tradition that is different from the main church. Final note; youth ministries many times make a sub-church in a church, separating the youth from the parent, the youth from their pastor, and takes the lead role in a youth's discipleship. Notice there is no focus on the parents in this video. There are well meaning people in youth ministries, but it is a system that can't truly be supported in scripture, is the source of a lot of income (youth pastors make some of the highest salaries, youth events cost money, youth bands/entertainment rake in tons of money, etc.), and basically relegates the teaching and discipleship of the youth to moral stories without always teaching the full counsel of God. I catechize my tweens so they know the attributes of God, the sinfulness of man, the reliability of scripture, the various doctrines in the Bible, and a whole lot more. While John 3:16 is a wonderful verse, we have to go beyond "Jesus loves everyone," community service, and the fun and game events we mistake for fellowship (think cliques that could be solved by a deep study of Galatians 3:28 and Colossians 3:11) and teaching to bring our youth to a stronger understanding of what it means to be a believer and follower of Christ. Church doesn't have to be dull, but we can't think it's always a party and think that is the way we are sanctified. God sanctifies us by His Word because it is truth (John 17:17).

Pretty sure all of these points can be done by their parents and the fact that you didnt mention "parent" even once makes me believe you are separating the teenager from their parent and replacing the parent. If you cared anything about the kids you would do what Malachi 4:6 and Luke 1:17 says and turn their hearts toward their parents to guide them into relationship with Jesus.

+RaRe X Shadow I'm studying youth ministry right now at Spring Arbor University as a freshman. It has been a very interesting road so far to get here! Anyways, three things I recommend is: A) Find a church that has a youth ministry program and try to get plugged in. Make sure to check the church out though before getting plugged in aka see if the church is actually preaching the Gospel. B) Find a mentor who is truly a person of God aka a true Christian and is older than you. Take time to meet up with them. and C). Make sure to stay devoted to studying the Bible. Let me know if there's anything else you want to know! I haven't had too much experience but I may be able to assist!

Guys, you may want to watch the link I included here first (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZddfeDuOLrU.html). Talk about studying the bible. Find one verse that says there should be a "youth ministry".... the only way you will find one is if you search for mother and father as the guiding lights. +Cari Baez I am a college student as well, and I get the stress level is somehwere between "holy homework batman" and your head just flat out going ker-splat.... that being said....I assume you have at least a couple friends you hang out with now and again on your down time if so, then you have a built-in ministry, right there. You don't have to preach, you don't have to even say anything, you just have to know the Bible and live it out in front of them. Act like Jesus and bam, the gospel has been preached without a word. You don't need a pastor's degree to do that. If you are too busy to do ministry, then your priorities are skewed and you have some reevaluation to do.

I'm sorry, but there are so many inconsistencies in this message. Even if I did agree with the necessity of youth ministry (I don't) I would refuse to let this man teach my children, for he is biblically ignorant. "Teenagers?" How did he come to that conclusion? For the sake of the argument, Even if Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ did use a group of "teenagers" biblically that is the exception to the rule and there is no premise otherwise. "They need advocates?" I agree. Children need a God fearing Father and Mother as their advocates. It seems to me that this gentleman and others like him are more concerned about losing a paycheck and the "cool pastor" status than anything else.

#5- Human tradition? Isn't the youth group a human tradition and ritual? Verse, please. Parents are to train up a child. We have amputated the body and placed a limb in a separate room.

No, sir. Youth ministry is extra biblical. Recently, it has been used to replace what is biblical for youth. When you replace the biblical with the extra biblical, then the extra biblical becomes unbiblical.

There is nothing Unbiblical about youth ministry. Jesus never gave us a clear cut this is how church is done, if he did we would worship the "order of the church" instead of the One who is the Head of the church. (Jesus) Unfortunately that is still what some people do, worship the "order of the church" instead of Jesus. Besides the fact that Jesus had the first youth ministry, ( and I say that lightly because he was the good shepherd) as he paid the temple tax for only himself and Peter, that means that the rest were Teenagers as the temple tax was paid for those 20 and older. Yes one was a tax collector, who very could have been 18 or 19 years old. It doesn't mean all the disciples were 13, 14, or 15 years old. John could very well have been that young as he was the beloved disciple. It also doesn't meant that they were all 19 years old either. P.S. A person that is a youth pastor is a pastor. He has to be a shepherd to his flock. In the case of Youth Ministry his flock are teenagers. And in a lot of cases families of those teenagers as well.

Samuel Villar expect we were given clear instructions on how church should be structured. It's in the book.
@Svillar13
@Svillar13 6 лет назад
Paul Farmer structure as in leadership yes as in organization (which some denominations interpret differently like congregations for Baptists or Episcopal for Episcopalians etc. Not how a service or church ministries are laid out. You shall have this kind of ministry and not that you shall sing three hymns before announcements then the pastor will preach that exists nowhere in the Bible. A youth Pastor is a Pastor that his specialty is youth and youth ministry helps get the youth used to serving in church. Especially if the youth ministry is an extension and part of the main church
@34rjack
@34rjack 6 лет назад
Samuel, the HUGE point you are missing in Titus 2, Ephesians 6, and many other chapters and versus is the clear direction of Parents to direct their children, not a pastor. Maybe these youth pastors should transition from "let us professionals handle it" (with absolutely no power of correction) to "let me help and train parents feel more confident in training their kids". The model of generations of kids going through "youth ministry" and then 80-90% leaving the church after high school needs to end, and this sacred cow of youth ministry is the cause.
