I went out recently and bought an M8 and the guy told me there's this video on RU-vid where the actual camera is featured. I knew what video he referred to. So as it turns out the camera in this video is on my desk next to me. Lovely camera!
Wow, I didn't even think of putting a micro sd card using an adapter into the camera and just move it over to the phone for editing, such a simple but great idea. Awesome video
Got an M8 on Ebay for less than US$900, recently serviced by Leica. Still on the learning curve on manual focusing, but I am loving the experience and the images so far.
Hi Mattias, I love the Leica M8, and I never get tiered of watching, your video on it, "I have watched both your video's on the M8", and return quite frequently just to watch again and again, and of course to listening to you talk about this beautiful camera so passionately as you do, thank you, Mattias, if you don't already, you should certainly be working for Leica!. in any case you must of inspired so many of us who love rangefinder camera's to go out and purchase the Leica M8, on the second hand market! I know I did! ; - ) Thanks again, Mattias.
I still use my m8 today and switch between it and my x-pro1. I forget that it's only 10 megapixels but I have large prints which look fantastic. Noise is very high if you are used to modern sensors but I find the noise very grain like and have the camera set to ISO 1250 by default and in fact I usually add more grain in lightroom/VSCO. If you prefer a cleaner noise free look this is not the camera for you! If pressed on the matter I have to admit I would switch to an m9 with the full frame sensor if I could afford it but only because it would allow me to use my nice 35mm lenses as 35mm lenses rather than 47mm(1.33 crop factor). I also have a lovely 50mm konica m-hexanon which have not used in probably about 10 years for the same reason. I have never used an IR cut filter although I have bought one recently but not used it yet as I am curious to see the difference. I use a voigtlander 28mm f1.9 with a L to M-mount adapter as my 35mm equivalent lens and find it to be the most versatile general use lens but I would advise others to try the f2 m-mount version as it is smaller, easier to find and for whatever reason my f1.9 has a back focus issue so most of my photos with this one are slightly out of focus.
Gordon Chalmers @ ISO 1250 there's no image quality left with the M8. The highest ISO setting I would recommend is 320. You have to get used to film-like shutter speeds in low light with this beautiful tool.
Very good review, I've had mine for 7 years now and use it on a regular basis. If you want to get the most out of the camera, look up "M8RAW2DNG" to unlock uncompressed raw mode. Shooting in low-light, use -3ev compensation and adjust in post to get very usable ISO1250 equivalent. There are some very low-cost lenses available, Canon, Nikon, Minolta (not as common, but cheap), and the Russian lenses. 80+ years of 39mm screw mount lenses made by many manufacturers. The cheapest lens that I've used on mine was $20 for an Industar-61L/D, a Tessar copy.
$10 Tessar: a bargain in any mount. Tessars in Leica mount are rare, usually a custom job. I've converted a few 5cm F3.5 Exakta mount to Nikon/Contax , then use with an Amedeo adapter. If you've never tried one: The Industar-50 Collapsible is good, uses low-dispersion glass, and is made using chrome-over-brass.
Its still one of the nicest declaration of love to a wonderfull camera, understood immediately by those who joined this M8loversgroup. What else does one realy need?? Thanks Mattias
What a nice video !! It gives me handfull insights on leica m8. Btw, which ir cut filter brand do u recommend or are you using? Big love from indonesia
Nice cam, I love the Wear Out Brass Body ......but do you know that for old Leica, if you must calibrate the Viewfinder, and Leica Service will send it to Germany to do it. Expensive repair & takes long time
Thank you very much for this video. Honestly I have watched a few times for the past year and it’s so inspiring. I really love the brassing in this camera the most beautiful I ever seen. How did you made it? I have tried to see a few techniques but your input would be very much appreciated! Thanks again and keep up with your work!
Hej! Nu när vårt första barn är på gång skulle ja vilja ha en kamera till familjefoton. Skulle du rekommendera den för de ändamålet? Det jag oroar mig är att det kanske är svårt att få bra bilder i fokus för en nybörjare som mig.
I can think of 10 reasons not to by any camera in existence. All cameras have major deal breaking flaws and no single camera in history have ever been better than another. It all depends on the users needs.
Mattias Burling haha my 1300 reasons were dollars, it was a joke. I completely agree with you and nothing would bring me more happiness then owning a Leica
Lawrence Law The Dlux is not a Leica. Its a rebranded Panasonic LX100. And a completely different type of camera. I would buy the lx100 if I wanted a good point and shoot with a zoom.
thanks for your quick reply. what about the pentax q vs lx100? i saw ur review on pentax q it seems like a very fun camera to bring along when u travel does it provide similar image quality then the point to shoot lx100? im currently still using my outdated sony nex-3.
What lens would you suggest that is not crazy expensive voigtlander 35mm? I traded in some gear and got a Q which I love but I also wanted to try for my art project. Mainly shooting BW.
Sometimes when life is bad and the world seems to go crazy, I come back to this review. It's from so many years ago when life was good, and I just started my journey in photography. I love the music and everything about this video. Thank you, Mattias.
Brilliant. I miss my M8, sold to a young enthusiast who wanted to learn rangefinder photography when I bought the M-P 240. Your photos are beautiful, full of emotion and light. cheers
I have your video with my morning coffee almost everyday for the past few weeks. I hope there's nothing wrong with me. Great video and music. And your video is one reason I acquired my mint M8 with just 2k shutter actuations recently.
No I think you misunderstand this camera. There's nothing technological like that except exposure metering. It's like using a film camera with a screen.
TJ Smith ohhh i really love how the effect take out but m not really expert in camera -.- want to get camera with this kind of this but no idea which one should i get
I would recommend the Fuji X100T and the Olympus PEN-F. They both have wi-fi and lots of other features. The Fuji has an amazing viewfinder that I'm sure you'd love.
Hey good video. I think the whole IR thing is really more of an advantage. I almost never shot with IR cut filters and I seldom saw any objectionable color shift. And with an actual IR filter (such as the ancient Leica IR filter), the results are very nice -- you get an IR camera without the cost of the conversion. I mostly shoot an M9 today but I keep my M8 for the IR.
I had to watch this video a second time because of how wonderfully crafted it is. Wonderful job on this. I would love to have this camera, but the DSLR I own now is the same resolution, so this wouldn't be much of an upgrade resolution wise. I would get it if I had the money, though.
I'm really wanting to get one of these to try for my first "Leica". Considering an SL, but feel like the whole rangefinder experience would be more worthwhile and rewarding for me. Plus those colors and B&Ws!
I am going to be selling my lovely Olympus M5 III with the 45mm f/1.8 to fund 80% of the price of an M8. I’m tired of waiting to buy a M10 or M11. I don’t mind the IR filter necessity because I put UV filters on all my lenses to help protect the front lens element anyways and I don’t mind the crop sensor given I come from micro four thirds. I love shooting film so I don’t see my images right away so not having a live view or playback of my images isn’t a big deal. 2500 ISO is all I’ll need in low light, if I’ve made due with Kodak Portra 800 for a year now on my film cameras I think I’ll be ok with 2500 max ISO. And the colors and look of the sensor is simply lovely. All in all I’m going in on the M8 as I’ve longed for a Leica rangefinder for a while. If I have to sell my Olympus M5 III to buy the M8 then I’m ok with it. Seeing other peoples reviews of this camera and their claim that it’s their favorite camera that they’ve ever owned truly sells it for me. I have a slower shooting style because of the occasional film photography that I do and it drastically made me enjoy the slower shooting style. I used to snap away, now even with my Lumix G9 I take my time composing my shot. It’s truly an enjoyable shooting experience and that seems to be the style that the M8 requires. Basically it’s the perfect entry level camera to Leica rangefinders for me. I’m glad I found your channel and the many videos on the M8 around RU-vid. I seem to have found my current solution to owning a Leica rangefinder on a budget. Can’t wait to own one soon. Hopefully I can figure out what lens I need to buy in order to get close to 35mm full frame equivalent. Probably a 28mm seems to be the closest focal length that gets me to 35mm on the 1.3 crop sensor on the M8. Anyways I’m glad I found out about the M8. I found a mint condition one for sale for $1,580 and I’m going to pull the trigger on it. Maybe pair it with a voigtlander 35mm f/1.4 for the time being and just enjoy it. Thanks for the video, glad I found your channel.
I don't know how many times I watched this video. I dream about this camera, since I came across your channel. Great music choice, as always! Regards from Brazil.
Hi Mattias! Thanks you so much for the video! It helped me a lot with decision making and it inspired me to make the transition from Fuji X-Pro1 to a used Leica M8.2. And I also got very very lucky with the M8.2 purchase! Got it in perfect (as new) condition with only 150 shutter actuations for only 1100€ !!! I'm using it with a clean copy of M-Rokkor 28mm f2.8 (and genuine lens hood) that I won on Ebay auction for 300€ and I'm surprised at how good the nice compact combo is! I honestly can't tell the difference between pictures taken with this lens and the Elmarit IV 28mm f2.8 that I borrowed from a friend to test out. Also the cheap Jupiter-8 50mm f2 seem to do great for portrait/isolation. And the best thing...finally got rid of GAS, that was present all the time with my X-Pro1, with which I used adapted Minolta SLR lenses that I was never fully satisfied with and had too many of them. Thank you again, and I blame you for bringing luck to me ;), as I probably wouldn't look for the camera if your video hadn't been made! ;) Keep up the good work! Best regards from Slovenia!
Mattias, thanks for sharing your joy. I have watched numerous photography channels and yours is by far my favourite. I have watched your videos numerous times because you articulate the joy of photography so well. There's a particular zen about your clips that is almost poetic. Maybe it's the voice, selection of music or the way you present, but the thing that strikes home the most is your pursuit of quality... well done! I hope you make more videos because I'll be here waiting!
