I'm still using my used T2i I bought in 2013 today, and it still surprises me how great the quality is. I would recommend that beginner filmmakers buy a T2i to learn the ropes of DSLR filmmaker, and because it simply is a great camera. Over the years using it the quality has gotten *better* because my skill improved, the point being your skills are what determine how good the footage is, so buying a $1000 camera right off the bat is a terrible idea because you probably won't be good enough to subsidize the specs until you've gotten a few years under your belt. And the T2i is such a good camera, that you probably won't be good enough to get maximum quality out of it immediately as you use it, even though it's only $200 nowadays! - Daniel
Newt Films thanks for the comment, I completely agree. I think it's much more important to learn about lighting and sound before thinking about an expensive camera upgrade. Thanks for watching!
Newt Films thanks man I just got back into using mine I actually brought it in 2013 but I end up going to college which kind of held me back from the learning process of the camera ( I also make music video) so I had to learn this camera in and out I hope to get better. Really for video
my 11 years old t2i still rocks! I have other dslr's and mirrorless cams but i can still count on my old canon as a reliable backup. I also use it for various projects and still gives me great results.
I just rediscovered my old Cannon T2i and the lenses that I already have . i am astounded at the quality for bothe stills and video. I was looking at buying a new Olympus but now think I will save the $2000 buck for now.
Thank you so much for this! This video is already over a year old, but I have someone who wants to sell me their T2i with all kinds of lenses and such with it since he's moving to a different brand and will have not use for the canon products anymore. I've been dreaming of a dslr for so long, but it will be my first one and I wasn't sure what to do. I live in Asia and, contrary to what one might think, electronics here are actually more expensive than back in the states so I wasn't sure what to do, but I was also worried about the T2i being too outdated, but I think you've convinced me that I should definitely buy my friend's camera now :) Thanks!
Just filmed my first youtube video with it. Bought one used here in 2018 with a 20mm and 50mm 1.8 lens for $220. For the value it gets the job done very well.
Nice video. I have a t4i and t5i and even though sometimes I think they are a bit soft, when I look at my videos on a big screen TV, they look amazing!
I just purchased one for about $150 on eBay. a steal indeed.I am a newbie. I've been an iphonagraper since iPhone 4. Is there a way to add an external display to it for self-tapes since it doesn't have one that flips out? And is there a cheat sheet for the settings I need to know. I was also thinking of using it as a webcam for my Zoom Meetings. Any thoughts bout that?
Andrew Chacon Yes! Just got mines today for the exact price of $200. My birthday is Friday and treated myself to a gift! It’s used, but this video helped! Going to go learn how to use it!
When looking to buy a used t2i, what is a good rule of thumb on maximum shutter actuations before passing on the camera? And is there a standard way of inquiring about how extensive of video use vs. shutter actuations?
I have a t2i and it is a phenomenal camera. But I will honestly say smartphones have come a long way. The iPhone X is my field assistant to my dslr and it is phenomenal. I use an app call pro cam 5 on the phone and I get raw shots so this helps when I can’t get that dslr for certain shots. And the 4K 60fps is something the t2i can not do. I have had my t2i for about 4-5 years and it is really a good camera.
29kalel I definitely know you mean. For me, the small sensor size is what keeps me away from phone cameras. With apps that disable sharpening and such though, the phone cameras can be great. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this review. I have been looking for a camera in this price range and have looked at this one. I'll be using it for real estate photography.
Thank you for the video and great details about the T2i. I have a T5i that I use to take stills of my sons band. I would like to start taking better video of his shows then the ones I am capturing with my phone. Would the T2i work well for indoor shows with usually low lighting? Thank you for your time, and have a great day.
Is the T2i still relevant now? I'm starting a podcast soon and wondered if I should buy this camera for shooting video? I don't want to spend more than $300 please help me...
Rob Blackwell means a lot, reminds me to start making more videos again... have been doing freelance video recently which is a lot more profitable but I don’t want to forget about RU-vid. If you like this video though, I think you’d enjoy the rest of my channel. Thanks again for the support!
I bought this camera about 5 years ago and currently, I was wondering if I should get an upgrade because there are such great cameras out there with sharper images, etc. But I guess I might just stick to the body and upgrade my lens; from the given kit lenses to an actual pro lens
Great video thanks I'm still at firmware 1.0.6 and there's been 3 updates since: can I install the latest one directly or should I install each 3 one by one? Also, I heard that some cameras can now update their firmware via EOS Utility 2. Can you do that with the T2i? Thanks
altar7 thanks for the compliment. As far as updating goes I haven't actually updated this camera since I bought it but I assume you would be fine installing the must recent one.
What type of camera did you use to create this video on RU-vid? I noticed the images taken of the Canon T2i bodya is very sharp compared to the sample videos taken by the T2i... I'm asking this question because I'm interested in the Canon T2i for video conferencing... I'm thinking about purchasing a Logitech c920 webcam or Canon T2i for video... They're both in the same price range... I'm not sure which would yield better results... Any advice will be greatly appreciated...
Hi! The shots of the Canon T2i were taken with the original iPhone SE. the shots May technically appear sharper, but that’s because I always turned sharpening down on the t2i. The t2i is much better than the Logitech (I have them both). Thanks for watching!
Christian...GREAT video i have a T3i have you looked into or tried Magic Lantern reprogramming for sd card...MERRY CHRISTMAS ! i haven't tried Magic but am thinking about it...
Scott G thank you! I have been thinking about installing magic lantern, the main reason I don't at this point is because of how much I use the camera for photo. Also, I have thought about making the switch to Sony. Thanks for watching :)
Got this nice camera for only $130 in a bundle 18-55 lens with battery pack 4 batteries a backpack to store everything. I’m really happy to grab this deal, I’m definitely thinking about buying different lens only for film making, since the 18-55 is a bit awkward to use in films. Which one would you recommend?
iAmKayana thank you! The microphone I use is the Blue Spark XLR microphone, connected to my Audient ID14 USB interface. I record in my closet which I've acoustically treated with acoustic foam. All and all, the set up costs about $600. Thanks for watching!
I'm planning a short film for this summer. My hard disk camcorder is ok for some stuff, but it won't be able to give me that cinematic look I need. After looking around at the various options I'd pretty much decided to buy a 550d/ T2i. Sure, higher spec stuff has come since it was released, but it still seems like a solid option for filming nearly a decade after it was released & you can pick one up with extras for well under £200 now. Can't beat that. Anyway. this vid was the final nudge I needed to persuade me to buy one. Thanks.
Also the T2i was the last rebel that is compact, about 30% smaller than the t3i and the succeeding Txi's. They've just gotten bigger, weird that canon employed this strategy with the competition/mirrorless going smaller.
Hi! Im thinking of getting a 50mm for my 550d. Im worried because the 550d has a crop sensor, it might not be as good as a full sensor. Should i go through with it?
Would you recommend a t2i for vlogging? I currently have one but I’m looking to upgrade but I wanna know if it would be cool to use for now or should I use my iPhone X?
I would go with the t3i or something newer bc the T2i has ni flip out screen. Otherwise the image is great. Consider checking out my other videos for tips on getting started with that kind of thing
Do you think that the Rebel T1i is still good for beginner film-making? I have one of those. My interest isn't really in RU-vid, documentaries, or comedy skits, but in scripted films. It was released a year before the T2i and has five less megapixels. Thanks.
This fact is nobody knows. several are thinking megapixels are the matter for videos. a simple math is full HD uses 1920 pixels Horizontally and 1080 pixels vertically. this is the maximum utilization as of sensor concerned. but the sensor gets illuminated if the glass is a good one or better one or best one. that is bigger aperture. so cameras, not a matter at all. Lenses and lightings and audio equipment are important than the camera body.
Eh. Gotta disagree. I shoot with a t2i (and have a fair few videos shot with it on my youtube channel), but having no autofocus in video makes it almost worthless if you ever intend to be infront of the camera.
The Metal Butcher I agree however I still think it produces the best image for the price used (color and character wise which is what’s most important to me)
I'm certainly not not mad at the decision 15 y/o me made when I bought it used for $400 in late 2012. But today I think for just a bit more I'd be tempted to buy an SL1 or the likes with AF in video. Until I graduate college it will still be my daily driver. Also, magic lantern helps these old cameras a bit if you haven't checked it out already.
It cannot unfortunately. Best it can do is 720p 60. I still recommend though, especially for the price it goes for online these days. Thanks for watching, and check out my other videos for my content like this
Great video! Would you still recommend this camera today for a beginner? I have wanted to start making short films but I can't decide what camera to get. Most of the ones in the stores are $600 and up. I am thinking about a Canon but not sure if to get the T7i or just try to find a T2i or T3i. Thanks for any help you can give me!
Cupido Music I'd say it's a solid camera, nice articulating touch screen. I'd go for the T7i at that price range though, dual pixel auto focus is incredible for both stills and video
$200 will also get you a panasonic G6 nowadays, which blows the T2i to pieces. The T2i was a great introduction to shooting when I got it, but the G6 is different league imagewise.
