Awesome video, I learnt some much new things about this duck breed. I used to have a Khaki Campbell myself, his name was Daffy and lived for almost 10 years. Keep up the solid videos mate 👏🙏
Yup that's how I do it. It was supposed tp house the geese too, but they started eating the duck eggs so I'm building them their own house now. Plus I want to be able to stand up in there when it's cleaning time. You should check out my chicken house...One of a kind octagonal house with 7 coops. Cheers bud.
Yeah, Another Really Good Duck Breed is the Welsh Harlequin! They are Hybrids of the Khaki Campbell, and are really good layers and have a beautiful white and brown plumage!
We just sold our Ducks for now. Hated having to say goodbye to them because I love Ducks. Going to build them a place before I bring them back. Ducks need a place to be nasty, LOL. Your setup is inspiring
Yup they need their own area for sure. It was great free ranging them in our orchard this summer cause it kept the house and run pretty clean. Hope you get some more ducks in the future.
Thnx Mal, it’s really hard to keep up with everyone, but nice to stay in touch once in a while eh. Especially with me, I’ve been putting out 3 vids a week all summer lol. Who has time to watch 60 mins of videos a week lol. Stay warm out there Mal, cheers.
Hey Chad. I haven’t watched much RU-vid since my mom passed a month ago, but I just got caught up on your videos. It’s always an enjoyable watch with Molly, the cats, all the birds and everything farm stay related. Thanks for sharing great content that I know will be enjoyable even when I’m dealing with a difficult time of life.
Really sorry to hear about your Mum. I lost my Mum about 10 years ago and she wasn't even 60 yrs old. It takes time to reflect. I was wondering why I haven't seen John around. Condolences bud. Although I'm glad maybe we can brighten someones day, we're clueless being a world away of what's actually going on in one's life. You just take care of yourself John ok. Anyways the videos will always be there now in the interwebs lol you can get caught up in due time. Chad.
Sad for you and your loss. You will never stop missing your mother but the pain will ease with time. May YHVH give your His strength and shalom through your grief.
Thank you @@BonnieBlue2A . He is faithful and exceedingly merciful, and nothing in life takes Him by surprise. Even when things don’t make sense I’m able to rest because He is sovereign over all things.
I just lost my mom 2.5 months ago. It's hard every day, but the loss also encourages me to good things I wouldn't have done otherwise, so it helps think of my challenges positively, too. We don't need to know the answers just yet. Someone Above runs the world.
I want Khaki Campbells too, and chickens, and a homestead. Maybe kune kune's, NZ rabbits ... Anyway, thank you for the helpful video! Those ducks live in a duck mansion!!
It seems that khaki Campbell’s are the most popular for homesteads. I’m stuck between them and magpies. I don’t see the magpies a lot though. I’m starting a small backyard homestead, I’m still in a neighborhood so I don’t have acreage. Are khaki’s a better choice?
I mean khakis can be quacky too, so not sure if the neighbours will care. Muskovies I hear are fairly quiet ducks. Here on the farm I don’t worry about noise, I love the barnyard sounds. Ducks are a lot of fun too.
Yeah it's always nice to have a hen that is a bit different. If you're into naming them it helps to distinguish her from the others cause they all look alike lol.
Hey Chad Does your sheepdog guard the ducks? I lost a bunch when I let them out to free range early one summer morning. No feathers - no blood - no sign of where the five went. Wondering if a dog would help when I wanted to let them range in various otherwise unprotected areas.
No these dogs are just our farm companions and live with us. Although if I trained them as lgd as pups they would. OES are not the go to lgd but historically we’re used to herd and protect flocks of sheep, hence their name. That being said just the presence of the dogs during the day will keep ground predators away, aerial predation is a different story cause a hawk, owl or eagle could take a duck easily. We also free range our geese with the ducks and they act as guards too cause no one messes with a goose. Keeping a livestock guardian type dig such as a maremma or Great Pyrenees will keep predators away but they should live with their flock from a young age.
That would be something to see eh...Wannabe farmer Chad teaching some little kids lol...I think I could do it. Maybe write some kids books first lol. I got enough stories to tell at least.
Fantastic video But I have a question I am in Egypt and want to have homestead birds on my property roof But I don't know what bird should I start with as a beginner I think between duck and turkey and chickens What is the difference in keeping Sorry 😔 if my English is not good My goals in keeping is to start with small family breeeding them to be a big group What are the birds or duck breeds that are easy to breed The duck breeds available in Egypt is muscuvy And the normal turkey And white ,red , and mixed
Muscovies are known for being fairly quiet and good mothers so they will sit on the eggs. Chickens can fly a bit more than ducks. Our ducks can only fly a few feet off the ground but chicken can get as high as 5 feet. I have no experience yet with turkeys. Ducks need a lot of water everyday, both chicken and duck like to eat bugs. Watch a few more videos to learn more too it’ll help. Best of luck.
How do your khaki Campbells not bite and run from you? I have two 4 week olds who are so skittish! I try to hold and "tame" them, but they just aren't having it. They don't want me to leave their sight, but don't want me to do anything with them lol How can I get them to calm down?
Khakis are very skittish. I’ve handled ours since they hatched and they still keep 10’ away from me. None of them have ever bit me though. The video makes it look easy but trying to grab 1 duck is a chore and I have to corner them. I’m still trying to see if I can get em calm though.
My sister has a lot of chickens and 3 khaki Campbell ducks but is it fine to contain them in the same area? Because the chickens and ducks are in the same area and also there use to be 4 but 1 died sadly
They can surely live together, but in my opinion it’s best to separate them. Ducks need an area to get nasty. Ducks will dirty up any available water unlike chickens. They both eat the same food, both eat bugs. Chickens will roost, ducks nest. The water is my issue but they most certainly can live together 😄
I just got two Khaki ducklings and they're amazing. One thing they've taught me...don't raise ducklings with baby chicks. Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge with us!
Oh yeah I mean they can survive but two much difference with the water and feed. Ducks are crazy but cute though. Much hardier than chicks too. Thanks for your kind words.
@@HiddenSpringFarm I thank you for uploading this video and sharing your knowledge with us. Khaki ducks are amazing. I just had them swim in some water, supervised of course because its their first time. Oh, one more thing...I like that pad you built for your ducks!
I keep my chickens and ducks together in the same yard, but they have different housing. For feed I use an all flock pellet and add oyster shell for laying. They are all doing great
We do have aerial predation but the geese do a great job of protecting the ducks and we haven’t lost one yet. Plus they get put to bed every night and there are not too many day predators.
My Khaki Campbells are so beyond lazy haha. I swear all they do is chill under the trees and sleep haha. Not to mention they refuse to go for a swim in the pond
Yea very true, semi flightless. They can fly but not in the same sense as normal birds, they cant fly high or for long distances. Its more like an extended jump
Oh yes the richer yolks in the eggs makes everything you bake so much better. I traded a guy a bunch of duck eggs for 4 Embden goose eggs and that's how I got our 4 guard geese.
@@HiddenSpringFarm fun fact my first two wives neither one of them like the idea of chicken a buddy of mine who was in his late 50s at the time told me how he got his wife on board he started talking about Lyme's diseases and text in the following day he walked up slap the back of her leg and go oh my God that's a tick on you it works LOL
a small flock of ducks don't really need a lot of room. In a backyard I'm sure 8-10 world be fine. With a small coop, protection from predators, they eat a ton of bugs. They don't need to swim either, but need constant access to water and won't fly away. Funny creatures too. Just remember not all zoning allows, depending on the municipality.
@@HiddenSpringFarm I’m currently petitioning the township. We aren’t allowed any egg laying fowl, but many people are now pushing back because of egg prices. I sent a formal request to the board of supervisors to allow chicken, ducks, and/or quail as people need to feed themselves. I was told two others called to ask about that today. With a bit of luck, I hope to one day have Khaki Campbell ducks, even if it’s just four females.
@@angrydwarfofdoom so you mean you could have all males? sounds ridiculous. well good luck to ya. KC ducks will lay just as many eggs as the best chicken layer, they are hardier and they live longer. Hope it works out. government overreach at its best eh.
@@HiddenSpringFarm Females. Or do you recommend having a drake? Yeah, I hate that I have to ask permission to do something on my own land. Do I really own it?
but their production starts to decline and then by 4-5 there are hardly any eggs right? Every bird is different. We have some black leghorns and they were laying fine then they stopped laying for 7 months then started to lay again. So far our Rhode Island chickens give the most and biggest eggs. The ducks lay a lot leading up to breeding season every year then drop a bit.
@@HiddenSpringFarm That means they're awesome layers...Btw I'm from India just bought a hundred of ducklings couple of weeks back, till now they look fine..umm not much idea about ducks but I'm slowly trying learning them and thanks for the reply tho
