You can definitely get all the knowledge and skills, basically be the unofficial equivalent of a certified trainer without a certification. But like any other professional position, I can't prove right away that someone knows how to do his job if I dont see something that proves it, like a certification. The value and meaning of a piece of paper like a certificate is the learning and work behind story.

Actually, you do need a certification. It makes you creditable and it helps with liabilities that may come when you have your own business. You don't need the NASM certification though. There's others you can get.

I can say for sure that NASM is NOT the way to go. I just completed my certification and my list of complaints ranges from there are large portions of the course information being useless and there are actual spelling errors on test questions. So much of the course is information that has no use for personal trainers. There are 20+ chapters and about 6 discuss exercises movements.
@tasteoftaleah5931
@tasteoftaleah5931 2 года назад
Agreed. I’m a week out from writing my cert and studying is the most frustrating thing. So many questions popping up that were hardly touched on during the chapters. The chapter summaries miss a lot of crucial information that you actually will get tested on. Hardly talks about actually lifting weights. Only covers a select few different lifts. Only briefly and generally discusses points of technique and form. Some textbook photo examples of different lifts don’t even show correct form, it’s embarrassing. And SO much information I would expect to be tested on as a kinesiology or physiotherapy major. not a personal trainer. Would not recommend NASM.

08:20 SO helpful!! Thank you! My knowledge is very limited, and I’m really just wanting to learn the basics (to help myself and loved ones-not planning to do this as a career, but the certification will motivate me!). It sounds like NASM is not the way to go and that I should go with ACE (I’ve been trying to decide between the two!). I will check out ISSA also! Thank you again! UPDATE: I just took your quiz, and I chose general fitness all around, but it suggested I go with NASM. For basically a newbie, is NASM the way to go for someone who just wants a good foundation of how to exercise in a safe way that also gets results? Thank you so much!!

I wish i would’ve seen this video before I’ve spent hundreds on NASM. I’m wanting on being self employed as a personal trainer. I don’t plan on working for a gym. I’ve had 2 extensions already with NASM because I don’t understand any of the info in the book. I regret signing up with them 😩

I appreciate your video but totally disagree. My 1st Nasm certification was back in in 2007. I was immediately employed at a gym and 2 years later ventured off on my own. I was an in home/in business trainer until 2019. I started another business in 2014 and managed both until the Pandemic. Long story short I have recently began my journey back into personal training and am currently studying for the exam (hope to take within the next month). While I do agree that the information can be obtained using free resources, the NASM study guide is all compacted, organized and I was easily able to move back and forth through the material. In my experience, the NASM resources touched bases on so much of what I needed all in one spot. If I needed more layman's terms for particular subjects I did look outside of NASM content but overall it is an all inclusive guide. There is SOOOO much to learn, so many layers of content (very overwhelming at times) but it was at least easy to follow, even if I didn't fully understand something upon the first read. A lot of material comes together as the chapters progress, which helped you "get" something that you may have been cloudy on at first. Now I will agree that I was irritated at all of the spelling errors in the latest study guide (shame on you NASM!) I do feel it is preparing me to re-enter the field of personal training. It does offer a lot of performance/corrective orientated content but isn't that what a LOT of potential clients need?...the ability to build their level of fitness while addressing potential imbalances, injuries, etc. along the way?! And outside of that scope, you are definitely armed with the ability get "better bodies, look good, or have something purposeful to do". For me the study materials allows me to service all levels of fitness levels as well as client base(s). Just my opinion. Dang! Didn't plan on this being so long, lol!

As a corporate and private trainer for the past 7 years, I can honestly say NASM is overhyped. It does provide great corrective exercise material that is equivalent to a collegiate level kinesiology or exercise science program, however, it really lacks in actually benefitting a business model. I've hired countless Personal Trainers into my corpo gym with NASM certs, and only a handful actually stay for the long haul. This is mostly due to not fully accepting the fact that Personal Training is a seller's business.

People go into personal training to train not sell. I get that you have to do some, but not 85% & above as most gyms force you to do. More selling and LESS training. I'll be doing my work online and not wasting time in a gym as a grunt.

Study material will be forget after taking the test, it's expensive to keep every two years for continue education fees. Most body builder doesn't have certification they learn from each other at the gym.

Great video, it really depends if you want to be employed or be self-employed. If you want to be self-employed you don't need a certification, what you need is education, skill and an ability to get desired results.

Your first reason about not needing certification to have the knowledge was enough for me to disregard the rest of this as non-credible. You can gain any knowledge without becoming certified, that isnt the point of a certification. If you have a point, I suggest arriving at it sooner.

I disagree personally. I don't believe having a certificate makes you a guru, but being credentialed helps you wade through the BS that many people are guilty of, which is giving a bunch of word of mouth, non factual health advice to people who have zero knowledge on health and fitness. When I got credentialed through NASM, it helped me better understand what has been backed by science and research consistently, vs what is just some sensational nonsense people see on facebook that has nothing backing it up, and the unfortunate reality of this is people are often inclined to believe nonsensical arguments from people who have no idea what the hell they're talking about, such as carbs and protein being bad, only drinking alkaline water, etc, because it's easier to understand when you label something as either bad or good, which is why we need more credentialed nutritionists and coaches to help make understand health and fitness easier to understand while also sticking to what's truth and what's fiction.

Just got my cert, got hired pretty quickly because of it. I can say this about nasm. The book itself is horrible and close to useless. Literally everything in it you can learn on your own through youtube. The book throws in a lot of fluff knowledge you will literally never use. Why on earth do I need to learn that the SA pacemaker is in the Right Atrium? When on earth is that ever gonna come in handy when im training people? You get this cert purely because every local premium gym knows it, and asks you to get it before they hire you and no other reason. See it as a needed mandatory evil and move on. Your real training as a fitness instructor begins after you get this cert and begin branching elsewhere as you go deep into the nerd bro science on subject you want to specialize in.
