My late sister Nancy loved Fika! She lived with her husband and children for 6 years and then they went back for 6 more summers afterwards - it was her favorite place in the world! My 3 favorite fika treats are: Semla, Napoleonbakelse and Lussekatt(sad that this is only for christmas, I loooooove Lussekatter). The way you eat your Semla is up to you, but i eat the top first with some of the whipped cream..and the rest of it, like a cinnamonbun.

I think it might be because I'm a mid-eighties kid, but for me, semla is inseparable from the children's book and julkalender character Ture Sventon, created in the late 1940s by Åke Holmberg. I grew up with the 1970s movie starring Jarl Kulle and the julkalender from 1989 starring Helge Skoog. All the semlor in those stories... always left hungry.

Semla is my favorite no1... I use to take off the lid and use it to take off whipped cream. When I have eaten the lid and there still too much whipped cream I take off a bit of the bun and do the same like I did with the lid. Next I eat around the part of mandelmassa. Cause I save it for the last, it's the best part for sure!

Fastlagsbulle, absolutely one of the best fika one can have. And obviously the proper way to eat it is 1) lid with a bit of the cream, 2) the rest of the cream scooped on top of your coffee, and then 3) the bottom like the most decadent sandwich in existence. Also, the variability is amazing. I love the almonds, but it is just as traditional to fill it with jams (which with modern trade, you can update to fresh berries if you want) which means it's good to go for people with nut allergies too. And lastly, don't slam a Slät Bulle. Arguably the best fika outside of the fastlagsbulle season - cardamon, not too sweet, fantastic texture, can double as a sandwich bread in a pinch...

Mine favorit place for fika in Örebro is fröken brogrens (fröken brogrens veranda) it has mini semlas buffe some days in the week and it is just perfect when one can not decide for what flavor to eat. They have tiny mini semlas with vanilla cream instead of almond mass. Many fika places offer it as a alternativ if you like semla but cant eat it because of the almond mass for diffrent reasons. And so the hard part. One have to decide what kind of cream under the semla hat. Pear whipped cream, or blueberry whipped cream, nutella whipped cream, dulce de leche whipped cream or normal semla with normal filling almond mass and regular whipped cream. When I was young I grow up with the tradition to put the normal semla with almond mass and whipped cream in a soup bowl and poor hot milk around it. Just a few centimeter or almost half of the bigger bund of the semla is cover. And sprinkle a little blended mix with cinnamon and a little sugar on top it all. And eat with big spoon. It´s so good. Perfect when it's cold outside.

I haven't eaten semla for many years, I don't know how many years, bust been at least for over 5 years. Main reason is I'm celiac and despite Sweden is really good place to find glutenfree alternatives, I haven't really looked for glutenfree semla or bothered try do it myself or bothered to 'cheat' and still eat gluten. Though I'd assume if going to a fika place outdoors where they sell fika, around the semla times now some must probably have glutenfree ones hmm

You have to try semla in a different way that I like. It is called "hot wall" you take a deep bowl with some warm / hot milk And put it in the bowl then you eat with a spoon.

When I moved to the east of Sweden I was very "shocked" by how they made the "Fettisdagsbulle" with the whipped cream and the almond paste separated. Where I was raised in the west of Sweden the cream and the almond paste was always mixed together before it was put on/in the bun. And the lid was round never triangular. Blasphemy indeed! 😎 And to top it off they called it "SEMLA" ARRRGHH!

@@JustaBritAbroad Yes, I so have some favorites but you do not see them very often in the cafées. Sommartårta or Pinocchio tårta is very good. Gilles with strawberries or blueberries. Pears or whatever you like. Soft saffranskaka. Mariabollar, rabarberpaj, hallongrottor, Napoleon bakelser. It could become a very long list.

Apparently there are fastlagsbullar with cream in our neighbouring countries as well, following this pattern of filling: Finnish speaking in Finland: 56-77% prefer jam (mostly younger people), 23-44% prefer almond paste (elder people) Swedish speaking in Finland: 25% prefer jam, 75% prefer almond paste Sweden: almond paste or sometimes vanilla cream (not sure if there ever was a survey) Norway: jam The tradition to eat the bun in hot milk seems to be purely Swedish though. Exactly why there is the divide between Swedish speaking and Finnish speaking in Finland is unclear. Some point to that it might have been difficult and expensive to obtain almonds after WW2, and thus in Finland which probably was more affected by the war, they substituted almond paste with jam. Another explanation is that before during the lent they ate jam filled donuts in Finland, and through that way the jam has moved from the donut to the bun, replacing the almond paste. However it is also said that a lot of recipes in Swedish use almond paste regardless of its price or availability, so perhaps it simply is what makes Sweden Swedish?

Are you aware this had been copied from the Italian " maritozzo", which is also the worst cake you can find in Italy? Maritozzo comes from the ancient Rome, Semla came out in the 16th century.

You forgot to mention that a normal size semla is too big to just bite in to. If you try you'll get whipped cream everywhere. (I think everybody has tried this at least once as a child.) My preferred method: Take off the lid. Turn it upside down over the whipped cream, so the excess powdered sugar falls on the cream. Use the lid to scoop up cream and take bites of it until the whole semla has become low enough for you to be able to bite into it. Then pick up the bun and bite into it as you would any bun. After you've finished eating, don't forget to wipe off the whipped cream that always ends up on the tip of your nose.

haha good point Karin!! that's kind of why I didn't try to just bite into the whole thing when I held it up in the video😅 that would have become a meme in minutes haha. I've never heard of turning it upside down though🤔 cool!! might have to give it a try sometimes!

Norwegian "fika" ; Sitting on a mountain top. Or by a forest lake. Happily munching a "Kvikklunch"... (Norwegian improved "KitKat"). Hoping for some peace and quiet. ⛰️😋🍫🌲🫎 (Yes. We're introverts. When sober...)
