A couple of years ago I went on a “health and fitness” journey (which I am still on). I lost about 85 lbs and I had to give away virtually everything in my closet. It was the most freeing experience of my life! Now when I look in my closet, I love everything that is hanging there and all of it fits. I have to say that most of it was purchased at Walmart, and many of the pieces were purchased on your recommendation, so thank you!
I love your channel but this was my absolute favorite video. 1. The Fun Fact about never getting invited to garden parties made me laugh out loud. 2. I love your color-blocked closet. 3. Your closet went from something I can relate to, to influencer, but in a great way. 4. Thank you for the honesty about high end v. Walmart. Great video!
You nailed it Theresa!!!! I am guilty of every one of these reasons . You've motivated me to do a clear out. Just looking at all my stuff is really overwhelming but as I mentioned you've given me the kick in the butt I needed. I would love to see more of these videos😊
I’m so GUILTY of all of these too! I recently went through my closet & got rid of so much. Wow, it accumulates so quickly. I’m going to try & go through my clothes more often ! I have organized my closet with top rack, all my tops - going from tanks, to short sleeve, to long sleeve. I then tried to keep them in similar color order. We’ll see how that works 🤞🏻
Sooo guilty on ALL 5!! My significant other is going to redo my closet and I will be doing what you just did so I'm not so overwhelmed when I pick out something to wear!! Now I'm actually looking forward to the process after watching this video. Thank you so much for showing us your closet, before and after! I'm pretty sure there are many of us following you that have the same closets with too much clothing!! So, again, thank you. It was very inspiring. PS, I love my Walmart clothes, too and now my closet is pretty much full of them!
This was such a great job! So motivating! Something I’ve also heard which I think is a great idea if you can’t decide what to let go of is “would you buy it if you saw it at the store now”. If not, and you don’t love it, get rid of it. This has helped me when I’m on the fence.
Hi Hilda - YEY! I am so glad that you found this video helpful! I feel SO much better now that my closet is purged of pieces that were not serving me 😀
Such a great video! I recently semi retired and work from home now and have so much “work wear” that had been sentimental but now it is time to let it go. You just gave me the motivation to do it and enjoy the clothes I do wear, and of course make room for some new fall pieces!
Hi Jen - aww thanks so much for watching and for your thoughtful comments as always. You will feel SO much better when you "release" the pieces that no longer serve you 😀
Very helpful, thank you! Such a good point about how we can sometimes get more enjoyment from a $10 piece of clothing than a $90 designer item! But we hold onto it because of guilt. I was nodding my head through your whole video!
This was a great video! I really have a hard time parting with clothes! I worked in an office pre-pandemic and now only go in once a week, so my work wardrobe really needs to go! Your closet looks fantastic and I do love the color blocking!
Hi Penny - aww thanks so much for watching and for your kind comments. The struggle with too much clothes is REAL. I feel so much better now that my closet is purged 😀
This video was great timing for me. I am overwhelmed by my clothes and I am guilty of all those same reasons. My lifestyle has definitely changed in the last 5 years and I’ll be retiring in a few months. Time to thin out the closet and keep clothes that are more casual for a retiree lifestyle. I like these types of videos.
Hi Kathy - I know exactly what you mean about feeling overwhelmed by your clothes, it took me months to complete this process. I feel so much better now that my closet is purged!
After watching this and Angela Masson’s recent closet video, I know what I’m doing today. I definitely need a closet purge. Thank you for the motivation.
the main word Guilty! I bouht it I SHOULD keep it. I have purged down to one large full closet. A hall coat closet. And I still have to many dressers and drawers . one drawer for colorful socks and one drawer for Blk, Wht , Grey etc. in my lingerie dresser. Your purge was so very helpful! Good for you putting the give a way jeans in that handled cube. No way you could lift a bin bag with that many jeans!!!!!! I know I have spring summer weight items that need to go, I purged fall winter just before warm weather. As always looking forward to more videos!
My habit is buying clothes, leaving the tag on, then never wearing them. In my defense, as a person who used to be heavy, I would buy whatever I could fit into at the time. I never knew when I would find something to wear so I would grab any piece of clothing, 'just in case'. Over the last year I lost 75 pounds and nothing in my closet fit. At the same time I have been learning about how to build a wardrobe that works. Now the clothes I have work well together. I have fewer items but can see what I have so getting dressed is easier. I only buy what I love because I have choices. Thanks so much for sharing with us.
I got the Better Homes and Garden hangers cream and gold at Walmart and love them! I also got bins on Amazon that have metal inset to keep snap that zip on top and in the front for easy access.
Yes! Minimal/capsule/whatever they call it is sooooo healthy for the mind especially- I'm thinking this is my favorite video of yours EVER! and I can see a new glow to you too-must be the lightweight of all that stuff lifted. I'm doing the same! YAYYY!! xx
I loved this video! Very relatable and motivating! Now that you have your closet at a manageable level of clothing I’d love to see smaller closet declutters with discussion about individual items you’re donating and why.
Great video Theresa! I love this kind of video. You did an amazing job focusing on the pieces you loved and donating the rest so that they can be loved by others. I could relate to what you said about how it’s not necessarily the expensive pieces that we reach for. I have a shirt from Walmart that I prefer over all my other shirts! My personal rules: I hang all my clothes so that I can see what I have, even t-shirts (anything in drawers gets forgotten/not worn), all my clothes must fit in my 4-foot-wide closet, and I will not buy any new hangers (anything new must replace something already in the closet). I liked your reasons why we may feel that we have nothing to wear: 1. Holding on to clothes that don’t fit 2. Too many clothes 3. Holding on to pieces because you might wear them someday 4. Not ‘retiring’ stained, ripped, pilled clothes 5. Clothes that don’t fit your current lifestyle I’m guilty of # 3 and 5! Because of the pandemic (and not going anywhere) and probably before then, I just wear shorts and a t-shirt (all on sale at Costco). It’s so easy. I do wear ‘something nice’ when going out for dinner or something, but that is rare. I’m holding on to clothes thinking that my lifestyle will change, but, really, I could get rid of some of them. And my nephew is getting married in a couple of weeks, but then I ordered a new dress (from Amazon) instead of shopping from my wardrobe. And I bought clothes from your last Amazon video. Where will I wear them? Don’t know yet…
Hi Celeste - aww thanks so much for watching and for your thoughtful comments as always. I need to stay on top of my closet now that I've done this deep purge 😀
I just found this channel today. At first I didn't think that I could relate to you but I listened for a minute and wow, I completely relate and I really like your channel. I first cleaned out my closet months ago and I can always find something to wear now. It's a wonderful feeling and this really works. I have a huge bag of shame that I am donating tomorrow. Talk about a weight off. Thanks for a great video.
Hi Coral - WELCOME! Awww thanks so much for watching and for your lovely comments. I know exactly what you mean about feeling like a weight has been lifted by thinning out your closet. I feel SO much better now that my closet is less packed. Hugs!
I loved this video, I keep saying that I need to clean out my closet and get rid of clothes that don’t fit but never end up doing it, this was just what I needed to motivated, thanks for this video
I’ve been working on my closet for a few weeks now, and it’s so frustrating, not knowing what to keep, and what will go to the resale shop, or to be donated. I keep trying everything on trying to decide, then I get sick of it all and do nothing for a few days. I have such good intentions to work on this on my days off from work, and then don’t do it. Your advice and tips are great, and I can relate to every one of them. I really enjoy these kind of videos, always hoping they’ll give me some motivation. Haha! I do have a stack ready to take to the resale shop on Friday, most of them with tickets on. The resale shop loves it when I come in. They love clothes with tickets that have never been worn. Thanks Theresa for the great video.
Hi Karen - aww thanks so much for watching and for your thoughtful comments. I know exactly what you mean about the process of closet purging feeling overwhelming! It took me months to finally complete this process! I feel SO much better now that my closet is purged. You can do it! Hugs
Wonderful video!!! thank you so much! I love your honesty & courage in showing your closet. (You have a lovely figure, whatever size you are.) I've cycled through all of these reasons, & started with regular closet reviews in college. All these years later, the emotions of one type or another can still get the better of me. I had often wondered what you do with all the clothes from your shopping hauls, but kept forgetting to ask you about it.
I recently found and am enjoying your channel, watching new and old videos. I especially liked this one. I would love to see more like it. I started a closet clean out and got stalled in the middle of it, but you've given me the inspiration to go back and finish it. Thank you for that.
Great job on your closet! A good declutter makes all of the difference in transforming a closet. The matching slim hangers look great and I love their color.
I retired from my 30 year RN career, I had a double closet almost completely scrubs, within the first month I gave all of them to one of my fave coworkers. Wow did I have a lot.
Congratulations...loved it! You have motivated me to tackle this same issue in my closet. Your closet looks lovely & as usual you are so sweet...love your personality & your videos.
Loved this, Theresa! I have recently realised that my personal style has slightly shifted, so some styles and shapes don't 'feel right' anymore. So I'm working through and donating, too! I've also been making myself wear those things I like, but for some reason am not wearing. And there's always, ALWAYS, a reason I'm not wearing them - fit not great, don't like it on me, doesn't work with my other clothes, feels uncomfortable ... even more to donate!
Boy did I need to see this video. You are so on point and have motivated me to do the same. Thank you Theresa. I always look forward to receiving your video notifications. You are the best. 👍
I would love to take everything out of my closet and redo it. However, if I put it on the bed, where will my husband sleep?! I could never get it done in one day. LOL I’m fine with sleeping on the couch but we don’t have a second bed set up in the other bedroom. My husband would not be amused. You’ll love this: My younger sister and her grown daughter and myself fluctuate between 3 different sizes. We pass around those shorts and jeans over and over. When someone has lost weight, someone else gets those clothes and, vice versa. Also, my sister got a new job and she wanted to dress up for it. I had been holding onto ALL my business suits because I was so sad to let them go (I’m retired). But, luckily, my sister liked quite a few of my suit sets and the rest, I cheerfully donated. I often find clothes in my closet with the tags still on them. Actually, what happens is that I buy it on seasonal clearance and hold onto it til that season comes around again. And, sometimes I forget I have it! Oopsie! I did a purge of black pants and kept only the favorite of favorites. The rest I donated. I donated 26 pairs of black leggings, jeggings, workout pants, etc. I was aghast that I had that many. I kept like 12!! But, to be fair, I did wear black workout style pants for a job I did. Yes, I love these types of videos. Especially from you. (Hugs)
Hi Libby - 😆 🤣 😂 the thought DID occur to me "what if I can't finish this project today, we will have nowhere to sleep!". Thanks so much for watching and for your thoughtful comments 😀 Hugs
Teresa have you ever checked out Chico’s? I started working there about a month ago and love it! I work at our outlet store in Alabama.. but if you look online for Chico’s off the rack, that’s what we sell! We are having a 9.98 sale now and a Labor Day sale going on too! All there items are wash and wear and very good quality! You need to check them out.. nothing is super long either.. there sizes run 00 to 4.. you would probably be a 00 or 0. I bought some great things over the last month!
This is a great topic! I had a photography job for a large company recently and I thought I needed to buy something that looked more professional than my work from home clothes. I ended up just wearing a polo because it was during a heat wave. I told some of the women about how I wanted to dress up more than what I had on and had been shopping online. Nearly every one of the women told me they had to do the same thing, shop for professional attire because they now spend some days at home for their job (hybrid schedule). The topic of needing professional clothing and having to shop for some was a great ice breaker for the group of people I photographed who were mostly women.
Hi Jamil - situations like that help us realize that we are more alike than different from one another right?! Thanks so much for watching and for your thoughtful comments 😀 Hugs
Theresa, I LOVED this video! It was so relatable, especially the pile of different size jeans and I totally agree the more clothes you have the harder it is to find something to wear. You have really motivated me. I only hope I can do as well as you did letting go of things.
Awww me and Mom watched the previous video and now this one!! Thank you for sharing this one was so good and helpful. I have the same closet! Going to get this started right away. And from the previous video I didn’t get the shoes 🙁 and I loved those!! But thank you so much very much enjoyed this video and previous 💜
This was fantastic! What a monumental task. Thank you for sharing I found this very helpful and interesting. I feel like you read my mind. I've been slowly decluttering my closet the summer and finding freedom in it. Anything that still had a tag on it I forced myself to make a decision. Anything that was a maybe, I tried on and forced myself to either donate or Style. One thing I've decided myself is that I'm a Shameless outfit repeater. I just find that very easy to pull things out of the wash and hang them right back up together again
Haha! You really hit the nail on the head, guilty! Though I sincerely regret some purges! I have found that putting some treasure in a bin and revisiting at a later date helps.
Hi Carol - aww thanks so much for watching and for your thoughtful comments. Once in a great while I regret that I got rid of something, but most of the time I feel so much better once my closet is purged:)
Great video! I am guilty of all of this….it is a mess! You are a brave woman to totally empty your closet, but that is probably what I need to do. I have multiple closets in various rooms😩 Your closet looks amazing❤️
Ugh! I really fluctuate in my weight and I have so many problems getting rid of really nice pieces that I hope to fit in again. I gave about 5 of my larger favorite pieces to my friend thinking that I wouldn't gain weight back if I gave those pieces away. Well, I have and now I wish so badly I had those items back! I can't figure out what to do about all my different sizes in my closet. It definitely is a problem! Love the video!
We recently went through the entire house and donated so much stuff. My husband says I am the opposite of a hoarder. It felt so good, but now I am looking for something everyday to get rid of lol.
love your hair like this All the reasons !! Hard to get rid of clothes ,so i do put them in a bag for six weeks if i don't get them out and wear them by then , they go into the garage for a couple weeks then to goodwill.
I’m a bit late but just watching this today. It’s perfect timing for me tho cuz I’ve been wanting to declutter my closet and these tips help so much. Thank u!
Hi Theresa, this just hit the nail on the head for me. I was working in an office and now I work part time from home. I have so many nice clothes I’m just holding on to and my closet is packed with clothes I haven’t worn in 2 years. I definitely need to get rid of so much. Thank you for this video. 🌷🌷🤣
Hi Cathy - aww thanks so much for watching and for your thoughtful comments. I feel so much better now that my closet is purged, I think you will too 😀 Hugs
It was so refreshing to see a real closet many of us can relate to instead of a staged over-the-top closet the size of my bedroom! Thanks for keeping it real. ❤️
Hi Theresa..Wow I don't remember your hair being that short. I love that you have a normal closet...me too. I need to do what u did. Oh I get it on the high end pieces. I bought a really nice tank at an estate sale for one dollar. I looked up the brand and said cam get at Amazon . I wanted a beige one that could be worn more. Theresa it was ninety dollars for a tank top. I think I will stick to Walmart. You look beautiful as usual . ♡
Hi, I did a purge in July and I sold 104 pieces at 5$ each... When I saw the thousands of dollars on the floor I almost cry...The 200 pieces not sold will be donated and some people will love them... I love those video and now that you have only pieces that you love you could show us some outfit directly from your wardrobe. I love to watch your video here in Québec Canada!!
Hi Magalie - my husband & I have been to Quebec! We stayed at the Chateau Frontenac as a splurge. I know exactly what you mean about feeling guilt over wasting money on clothes that you never wore and selling them for pennies on the dollar. I am trying to be more mindful with my purchases these days. Thanks so much for watching and for your thoughtful comments 😀 Hugs from New Jersey!
I"m guilty of all except I don't keep things that are torn or stained. My problem is I am an Impulse Buyer and will buy something not thinking what I have to wear with it. Also, I get frustrated when shopping because I'm so hard to fit, so I will sometimes buy out of frustration then in the end don't wear what I buy!!!! I am pretty good though about purging my closet each season. And I am also now selling on Poshmark. Not many sales yet but every little bit counts:) Great video....made me feel like I'm not the only one with a difficult closet to deal with. I moved out of our master walk-in closet years ago....hubby is a clothes horse!!!!
Hi Cheri - I was an impulse shopper for years. Now I try to be more mindful with purchases, although it's a little harder because I have a fashion channel lol. Nice for your hubby to have the big closet 😀
thank you so much for inspiring me ! I have just ordered hangers from Amazon Canada ...... I'm sure that after receiving my hangers it will force me to empty my closet and re-organize just as you did.
Thank you, Theresa! My walk-in closet is completely unusable because there’s so much in the floor. You have perfectly explained all the reasons I don’t clean it out except for one. Several times over the last 10 years when I said I was going to clean out and purge many of these things that range from size 4 to size 14 and do just what you showed, something has come up that has prevented me from doing it-different little family emergencies and small crises. It’s gotten to be a family superstition that if I schedule several days in a row to work on my closet, something will happen, so now I don’t even say the words! I think the hardest for me it’s the thought that I want to get back into some of my favorite pieces but I just weigh too much to do it. I tell myself that if I ever get down to that goal weight I could go buy an entire new wardrobe. I am too financially conservative to do that. I really think I’m going to follow your example this fall and completely “rearrange” my closet. (I just can’t plan a “cleaning”!)
You deserve to dress the body you have now! Put the things that fit you front and center, buy a few new pieces that you love unless you’re actively losing weight, and that will make you feel good enough to work on that weight loss. But put the things that don’t fit you away. You don’t need to feel guilt. This was a great video. I also recommend watching Christie Ressels videos as well. She is very inspirational and has some videos on what to wear during a weight loss. And she is super stylish!
Hi Teresa👋 and The Last 5 Years I've been going through my closet throwing away stuff that looks terrible giving stuff to people that are that size are donating it
Hi Marie - it sounds like you are doing a great job keeping on top of your closet! Thanks so much for watching and for your thoughtful comments as always 😊 Hugs
As far as the shows go those plastic clear shoe boxes (they are pretty cheap at Home Depot or Lowes) make the shoes look so good, allows them to be seen and not on top of each other.
I like the closet clear out video. Nice change from whet you usually post. I agree with all the reasons. I like 2 colors of your closet wall. I purge my closet about 4 times it sometimes more a year. It helps to keep track on what you have and I’ve been wearing more of my clothes and accessories more. I’m making a rule to not buy so many things. Having too much made me feel overwhelmed and frustrated.
I felt the exact same way, overwhelmed! I feel SO much better now that my closet is purged. Thanks so much for watching and for your thoughtful comments 😀 Hugs
Guilty x 5!!! I loved this video! You have inspired me to further tackle my closet. Thank you for the steps and a plan to get things done. 😄 And by the way, I really like your paint job. The blue on top reminds me of the sky.
I had held on to a lot of clothes that were too small for me as I gained weight over several years. Always thinking I would loose the weight. Well this past year I did finally loose the weight (about 50 pounds). And when I did I went through my closet and tried every single item on. Some I am very happy to have kept, others I realized were just not my style anymore, or didn’t feel right at my age. And so I did also purge a lot of items that I now fit back in as well as the items that were now too big. I did keep few of the bigger items just in case my weight fluctuates but since I’ve heald steady for about 8 months I may do another purge soon of the bigger items. That said I do have some dresses I adore from 20+ years ago that I kept as they were classic styles and I love getting to wear them again. Really enjoyed your video!!!
Hi Amanda - congratulations on your weight loss! You are SPOT on that even if something fits, it might not be your style anymore. I feel so much better now that my closet is purged. Thanks so much for watching and for your thoughtful comments 😀 Hugs
Oof, the multiple sizes! I have everything from a 4 to a 12, but am actually an 8 in most brands. You've inspired me to at least narrow everything I own into the 6 to 10 zone...it's a start!
Hi Sherry - aww thanks so much for watching and for your thoughtful comments. I have a video going up today about some of my all time favorite pieces and why they are still in my closet 😀
