Well, Billy, this was an exciting idea. Thanks for the opportunity, I found it a challenging exercise. to perform. After carefully listening to the 5 cellists I've selected Gavriel Lipkind as my favorite, second came Nicolas Altstead, and third on my preference list is Enrico Dindo. The two other cellists didn't win my enthusiasm. However, please allow me to introduce 2 other highly interested cellists as exceptional talents to recognize: Ms. Camille Thomas from Belgium and Mr. Kian Sotani from Austria/Iran. Both cellists are very available on RU-vid. Do you agree?

This is fantastic. I have not heard of ANY of these cellists! But that's perfect! Because I'm going to go and check them out! They sound interesting! Thank you for sharing what you discovered Billy! It's nice to discover and learn new things about the world of cello and cello playing and all the beautiful varieties!

My "short list" of recordings that really move me! 1) Bloch, Shelomo; Lynn Harrell, Royal Concertgebouw, Bernard Haitink, conductor. One of the greatest cellists of the 20th century, accompanied by one of the great conductors of the 20th century. This recording gets me every time. 2) Dvorak Cello Concerto; Gregor Piatigorsky, Boston Symphony, Charles Munch. Everybody has their favorite, but to me, this is the Mount Rushmore performance. Grisha never sounded better! 3) Richard Strauss, Don Quixote; Piatigorsky, Boston, and Charles Munch again! (There's also a very stunning performance of this great work with Frank Miller, The NBC Symphony, and Arturo Toscanini conducting. So, I'm very much "old school:" what do you all think?

I love the cello as an adult learner. I enjoy, but do not love classical music. My motivation to learn is to play celtic music and other more contemporary music. Recordings that inspire me are of course Yo-yo Ma and masters of classical music. That said, let’s give credit to a few contemporary cellists: Misha Maisky, Pablo Ferrandez, Kian Soltani, Simply 3, Piano Guys, Luka Sulic, Johannes Moser.

I'll have to check these out. As a curiosity since we're on the subject, where do you consider Mischa Maisky in the realm of players? I heard his Bach suite and his choice of recording location and playing really struck me as enjoyable.

Billy, what is your honest opinion of the two 'cello concerti by Victor Herbert? Did you know that they inspired Dvorak to write his own 'cello concerto?
