Since my daughter and I have dietary requirements (gluten and dairy allergies and we’re vegetarian), we generally choose restaurants based on A) ability to accommodate our needs and B) atmosphere. Two of my favorite meals were at Skipper Canteen, where there were some really good gf/df options and, surprisingly, 50’s Primetime Diner! Our server berated us for being “picky eaters”, but then whipped up a fantastic gf/df pasta primavera *and* a dairy free peanut butter and jelly milkshake! The milkshake was honestly one of the big highlights of the trip for my daughter and she still talks about how delicious it was and how the mean waiter turned out to be secretly nice!
Love that! Disney is amazing with their ability to not only accommodate but really offer tasty things we can’t always get. My new fav GF place Trattoria in Boardwalk- they make everything fresh and can do all of it GF even stuff like fried calamari- so good!
I LOVE Sebastian’s bistro. I have no idea why people aren’t shouting about it - I ate there for Christmas Eve last year and was blown away. Thank for you sharing your list this episode! And I just made a reservation at skipper canteen for next month and I’m so excited.
I watched this on Spotify, but I had to come here to leave a comment. That Aladdin interaction was hilarious! 😂 I’m not good with human characters either. 🤭
This was so good and helpful! I can’t wait to try Sebastian’s in particular! It’s so fun to watch your podcast…it’s like we are sitting there with you chatting about Disney!!! ❤
You mentioned a favorite at steakhouse 71 for breakfast and a hamburger, but didn't tell us what you like ( which I've found can be the key to enjoying a restaurant sometimes). Give us the deets 🎉 love the new video for the podcast!
For breakfast I usually get the Steak and Eggs or the Eggs Benedict but their pancakes are good too and I love their breakfast potatoes. And that burger is one of the best at WDW! But can never go wrong with any of the steak options. 🤗
You totally missed the boat regarding Brown Derby. It is consistently outstanding. Maybe you are getting used to it so don't recognize the excellence. It is phenomenal. However, the other 4 on your list are spot on. :-)
1. I totally agree that Akershus for dinner is…well, 🤢. But the Princess breakfast is delicious! Pastries, fruit, cheese, eggs, bacon, cheesy potato casserole, etc. Tons of delicious food (family style)! And the princesses were amazing-we even had Belle when we went in March! I *highly* recommend you taking your kids back for breakfast and reporting back to us🥰 2. Mama Melrose had an amazing steak and pasta dish when we went. I know they tend to get a bad rap, but it was delicious to our group of 14. 3. I’m sooooo sad too about Be Our Guest changing. It used to be one of our favorites. But Cinderella’s Royal Table is on my to-do list! 4. My daughter & I had lunch at Steakhouse 71 to celebrate her 16th bday & my 40th on a girl’s trip! We had an amazing server! He surprised us with a *free* piece of the gazillion-layer chocolate cake! It was amazing and such a magical moment! I definitely sent in a cast compliment for him😊 LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the podcast and the format! The hard work y’all put in is obvious and so appreciated!🥰
Aw thank you! So appreciate the great feedback! And okay- you may have convinced me to try breakfast in Norway- not sure if I’ll convince Louisa lol but we should maybe give it a fair try. 😉
I’m so glad you called out Hollywood Brown Derby! We had a really nice server but that is all the nice I can say about our experience. The food is overpriced and underwhelming. I’m by no means a picky eater, but for a signature restaurant, I expected the quality I’ve had elsewhere. There are too many delicious and cheaper options in DHS and I’ll take a Ronto Wrap over that Cobb salad any day!
This was a good one! You made me realize we missed out bc when went to Cinderella’s Castle we only met Cinderella for a photo on the way in. We didn’t have table visits or see any other princesses.
I so agree with Be Our Guest. I wanted to love it but man it was just LOUD. I will say we had the best service. Our waitress was super sweet and brought out surprises for our mom for her birthday! Planning a trip in Nov and I’d love to try a character dining for my daughter but man those prices
Yeah the prices are no joke! Definitely check breakfast it’s always the least expensive. I’m still holding out hope they’ll tweak some things for Be Our Guest in the future so I’ll keep checking periodically. 🤗
Enjoyed this episode! Skipper Canteen has been great for my family also-- although best when we had a hilarious super-corny Skipper Server. We'll have to try Sebastian's next time, and maybe Splitsville too... that was a major surprise in your list. Your video with Aladdin was hilarious! Our next trip is Disneyland, so it may be a little while before we get back to WDW.
Splitsville...who knew?! I would love to try this. Do they have gluten free? I enjoyed Sebastian's with my mom and son and I LOVED the food andI can't wait to take my husband. My mom wasn't a fan though...just not big on different spices/flavors. I can't wait to try Steakhouse 71. Thank you for all of this great information!!
Right?! Pretty sure bowling alley sushi should normally be something to avoid. 😅 They do have GF options but not as many as the Disney owned restaurants. Steakhouse 71 has a fantastic GF menu though- one of the best! 🤗
Aw, that’s disappointing to hear the Be Our Guest restaurant became what it is now. I remember during its debut and how much fun it was. I was lucky to get in for a quick (and affordable) lunch back then and it was an incredible experience. I took my wife in 2019 and while the price for a pre-fixe dinner was… $54? Around there. But it was worth it and she loved it. But $70 now? That’s so insane.
Oh gosh I agree with so much of the overrated list so far. One note for anyone planning … don’t chose one of the last reservations of the day at a character meal! We were so disappointed at Tusker House with how rushed it all felt when we were there in January. We’ve done most of the character meals over the years but had not made it to TH until this last trip. We had a 5:45pm dinner reservation and the park closed at 6. Oops. Not making that mistake again!
All the restaurants at Disney are overrated. Sadly, social media influencers have made easily influenced mothers think they need to panic over getting reservations to certain restaurants and spend a ridiculous amount of money on food to have a perfect and magical vacation. Instead of spending $41 for your kid to eat mac and cheese at Be Our Guest buy the same thing for $6.99 at Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe. Sonny Eclipse is way more entertaining than watching the beast run by your table once and you don't have to go bankrupt to buy for the meal.
I’d be surprised if they do because her meet and greets haven’t been super popular in the parks. But it’s always possible- her movie does fit the theme perfectly
I know! They can always turn them around especially if bookings drop off and they realize they need to tweak things. But yes let us know if you try any of those other options!
Funny enough, I’m going to Sebastian’s tonight. 😂 Agree with your lists. I think it’s pretty spot on. I’ll have to agree to disagree on 1900. I just can’t with the lack of cohesion. None of it fits with the Victorian theme. Topolino, Tusker, Ohana, Cape May, etc. have cohesive theming with character choices/outfits and restaurant theme.
Thanks for watching! You make a good point with the the character choices for 1900- it does feel a bit random but fortunately the actual experiences were solid. Even if they don’t seem to always connect as well. 😉 thanks so much for watching Katie! Enjoy dinner tonight!
