Justin makes you feel like the world is full of only puppies, kitties , butterflies and rainbows. I love his videos! I wish I had more friends like Justin in my life!
I agree this is my second video listening, and I can tell he has a beautiful spirit. It just resonates just like his voice. Glad I discovered his channel.
Thank you Justin! I always believed I would never hold a tune, then I learnt, I believed I would never be able to harmonise, then I learnt and I can spontaneously harmonise! Keen to be able to riff and run!! Making dreams come true!
Thank you so much Justin, been following you for last 3 years. You're videos have helped me alot. But I'm a little confused, Is it okay if my throat also bounces while doing riffs. It feels like I can only go as fast as my throat can bounce. What could I be doing wrong?
Hi Pratik! That is amazing! Do you know about our contest right now? It’s for singers like you who have been helped by the show. You can submit a video about how the show has helped you! More information is on VoiceLessonsToTheWorld.com/10years! Email us if you have questions! As for your riffs, it sounds maybe like your Larynx position is jumping around. We recommend checking out our larynx episodes so that you can get a better understanding of how to control it. You don’t want it to be bouncing around so much. It might move a little, but it shouldn’t be the pitch changer. Try doing the riffs slowly and monitoring your larynx! -NYVC
This was SO MUCH FUN!!! I have been singing for about 35 years, but was always kind of intimidated by the "Riffy People" for lack of a better word. I just thought they were "better singers." I didn't realize I could actually be able to do it too. Justin is an absolutely fantastic coach! Now I am pumped...
Thank you for explaining riffs and runs. It's making me really listen to singers who inspire me. I hope my riffs get better and make my singing interesting.
Graces - 2 notes ascending or descending 3Note - 3 noted riff ascending or descending Tetratonic - has 4 notes ascending or descending Pentatonic - has 5 notes ascending or descending Hexatonic - has 6 notes ascending or descending Heptatonic - has 7 notes ascending or descending (beyonce sings this in halo when she says "darkest night") Direction Change - Notes that go up or down, such as a pentatonic up down up up down up
I love how encouraging Justin is! Sometimes I get so in my head about my voice but I can always pop on a video, go back to the basics or learn something new and get spurred on. These videos are the best.
This was so excellent Justin. Been a vocal coach for years & you described riffs so beautifully. I subscribed & will share your channel with my students. Thank you for your very generous content & incredible vocal exercises. I also want to thank you for your positive, & supportive demeanour. There can be so much ego out in the world of singing, & so much criticism that leads to people's inner critics being so strong that they don't even dare to try singing. I often have to call upon my psychology major to help my students (especially adults) to overcome damage done by overly critical coaches. You are the creme de la creme. Thank you for your great attitude & incredible talent as both a vocalist & pianist, but also as a very clear, concise teacher.
1:37 Grace Notes - quick note above or below what We are singing 4:00 3 note riffs - MOST IMPORTANT 6:51 Full Pentatonic - 9:43 Changing directions 12:07 Putting it all together - combination of the above four
We’re so glad to hear this Mari! We hope you’ll be joining the VLTTW 10 Year Contest! More info at VoiceLessonsToTheWorld.com/10years with an extended deadline of May 1st! :) -NYVC
What I did in the past is to half-time those videos on RU-vid, listen and find out every note and practice by myself. This is much more systematic. You are fucking awesome. Justin I love you
That’s how I learned to bring style to my guitar playing. But it took A LOT of time to nail those nuances. On vocals, I still have to fix timing issues in my runs. I need to get to the point where landing em spot on is second nature so that playing with timing becomes both fun and fluid.
The way you split this genius video up into sections is brilliant Much Love To You Justin👍.. and bonus points to you for putting me onto that Lady Gaga song!
Grace notes, shakes and other musical ornamentation started in the Renaissance era (c. 1500), and by the Baroque period a hundred years later became typical of the idiom - Handel, Bach, Purcell for example. The male countertenor voice was also a feature of those periods - and also the male soprano castrati of the Baroque, but that's another matter entirely!
Well damn! After watching this Justin made me feel I was Beyoncé! 😂😂 Nah but seriously, I've never known the science behind a riff, and now all I wanna do is practice these... Absolutely impeccable teaching method honestly!
@@NewYorkVocalCoaching It's 1.56am here in the UK. I'm going to sleep, and the last thing I've done is gone over that last riff exercise so I can riff in my dreams! 😂😂😂😂🙈🙈🙈🙈
This Is the First video of yours that I see, I loved every instant, BUT the vocale benediction at the end is true magic! So nice, so friendly, so brilliant!
Thanks Justin! I thought you were not going to upload videos anymore on VLTW. I'm so happy to see I was wrong! I started my singing journey around 3 months ago with zero knowledge, and I've been learning a lot with your videos. It's been a wonderful help and have clarified many confusing singing concepts to me. I love the way you explain. Keep making videos please. They teach and inspire. Thank you very much!
Hi Poly! Welcome! We're excited that you've started your singing journey and that we can be a part of it! We're definitely going to keep doing VLTTW. We also have other shows that we do that we hope will be helpful to you! Definitely check out our last two releases this month - David Phelps episode and our Linda Ronstadt episode! -NYVC
I have been frustrated and anxious to sing the Pentatonix scale for years always intimidated that was too hard, and even the vocal coaches I ran across, sang it in such a way in such a way that it seemed like they were more interested in demonstrating their own vocab ability that teaching the student how to get it. Thank you so much for your generosity at your instruction.
You know you were the one who made me continue with my singing, and as far as I'm continuing with it, I just wanna say thank you so much for your lessons and guides, it really made me improve my singing. God bless:)
Watching this, and then rewatching SUMMERTIME SADNESS- SHAWN MENDES (one of his oldest covers), I notice how much he implemented these exercises into his cover. It's like he learned it from this video somehow lol
One me favorite songs uses three note one. "diamonds" - Rihanna OH WO-O-OH OH WO-O-OH And Beyonce does a lot of direction change riffs in "before I let go". One of the best turn up songs ever, super catchy riffs
I naturally use grace notes. It either stems from singing too much 90s rock or just tightening up an old habit of sliding into notes lol. As a guitarist I forget that there are also ‘standard licks’ vocalists use.
It is so interesting because the three-note riffs you can even hear in native music, in Asian folk music and in Gregorian chants that are hundreds of years old!
Hey Justin! I've missed you!! 😊 You are so artistic and knowledgeable. Your have grown so much. 💕 it's been a while since I've view your posts, but I'm back! Hungrier than ever! Ready to leave my footprint and your the person destined to be a part ofmy journey. 🦁 I love the passion you put into your posts everything I know, I've learned from you. I even recommended you to my pastor!! God bless you.
Wow this is so amazing Delmi! We'll pass your kind note along to Justin! We believe in you and we're so excited for all of the ways you are growing vocally! Keep up the incredible work and let us know how we can help. :) -NYVC
this helped me so much. May God bless your soul, Justin. just getting through the frustration of not having any muscle memory of riffs&runs is already a huge milestone for me. I'll do my best to practice this lesson you taught us.
We're sorry you didn't like the episode, Mick! Lots of singers want to know about Riffs, so we created an episode to help guide them. We agree that story telling is the most important thing. Great vocal technique is nothing without the story telling! -NYVC
Has anyone ever thought of voices that were in a low pitch chest voice but at the same time due to extreme brightness people end up thinking it’s a higher pitched one?
For anyone like me who finds solfege notation helpful, here's the solfege for the Changing Direction Hey Yeah Exercise (made it easier for me to follow along): Hey: la do re - do re mi - re mi Yeah: so mi re - mi re do - re do la
Hi Justin. I would like to buy your book but Im from Brasil and Brasil is a very limited country and over here is impossible to find a printed copy .have some how you can fix it?
Hi Tiago! We're so sorry to hear this! And we totally understand you wanting a physical copy! While the ebook is a really great option, we always recommend the print version. We worked hard on finding the most feasible option so that the book could be shipped to as many places as possible! Currently we are able to ship to most places through the United States Amazon.com marketplace. We are looking forward to when we will be able to ship books to Amazon warehouses across the world. In the meantime, you might be able to work with a third party shipping company to have a book sent to you. We hope this offers a solution If you need anything else, please don't hesitate to reach out to us! -NYVC

Hi Guy! Do you mean moving from pitch to pitch fast enough within a riff? This takes time to build up to. First, you'll want to sing the riff slowly, and then speed it up over time. Check out Ep. 3, Ep. 27, and Ep. 56 for more on Riffing! -NYVC
We're so glad you enjoyed it! And yes, Justin is the Founder of New York Vocal Coaching. For more information please visit newyorkvocalcoaching.com. -NYVC
Thanks for your lessons. I need a help. "opinion and suggestions" In my situation, im aware of breathy and nasal voice. Also the "vibration". Placing larynx. Twang. Fry. That's because of your videos. But i still have concern for my (1)sounding like nasally robot when recording. (Audio recording and video). (2)when i speak or sing regular singing, my upper neck only vibrates, its hard to do chest voice but falsetto c4 to a4 and falsetto mask b4 to c5.
Hi Joselito! If you're hearing a "nasally robot" then you're likely just too bright, and not necessarily using too much Nasal Resonance. Try some darker sounds to find a resonance that you prefer. You might take a look at episode 17 to get you started. As for your Vocal Registers, it's tough to say what's going wrong for you. Maybe check out our Vocal Register Series, our Mix Voice Episodes, our Strain episode, or consider a Vocal Evaluation which we, offer as a service. We hope this helps! :) -NYVC
Very useful ep, this made me realize that when we see those stars singing riffs n runs with like 10 notes its bcz they learmed the basics first n then practice n improve their levels. 💙💟👍👌
Thank you so much for this, i’ve been working on my voice. Just tried out to make my own song. It is my first song and it’s not that good, these videos help a lot though. My song is on my channel if you want to check it out!
We love that you’re writing your own songs, Hani! Songwriting is such a beneficial thing to do as a singer, regardless of your aspirations. Keep up the great work! -NYVC
