My house can turn into a pig sty. Since setting a 5 minute timer and doing tasks like clean the kitchen counter, hoover the upstairs carpet, clean the bathroom. After 5 minutes I stop even if it's not totally done. I go have a chill and then go back to it later. It's totally changed my home. Good luck

I am also messy and live alone. My mother was tyrannical and the house was never messy...not tolerated and when I was a teen, I was left with 2 much younger siblings and a list of chores that would choke a horse...vacuuming a 2 story, 4 bedroom, 2-1/2 bathroom house and defrosting an old 1950s refrigerator. It was exhausting and I'd be babysitting sometimes all weekend. I still lived home but was going to move to a diffcity with a friend...the city of choice was hers and when we got there (2000 miles away) she decided she wanted to go back to our state of origin. I wasn't going to stay on my own and went along with her decision. I arrived home after less than a week. I was told I wasn't welcomed and wouldn't be staying. I ended up in a much better situation in the end for the next 4 yrs. After which I went on a vacation and met someone and got married. He unfortunately died and my parents showed up and wanted me to move back to the east coast. I said o and that I was going to move to LA and find a job and a place to live. I did with some help from my father and have lived in LA for about 50 yrs...best decision ever. I am now contemplating a move to So. Carolina where my brother had a house and has offered me the use of it.

I love your statement that your house didn't get cluttered in a day, and it won't get completely decluttered in one day. This is on par with my saying to new moms who are worrying about getting their pre-baby figure back: it took nine months for your body to change and bring a baby into this world, so give yourself nine months to "re-set".
@Malena2022
@Malena2022 Год назад
Side note: You might never go back to the body you had, because you had a baby and went through an enormous change. But it’s definitely good to know it might take a long time if you ever do. The baby and the great accomplishment is the reward❤

Our trash company has a limit of 7 bags weekly.. I always try to put out 6 or 7. We are always extra nice to our trash men. They don't always get the credit they deserve, they have a hard job. When the temp is over 90 degrees we give them ice cold bottles of water and when it is 30 degrees or lower I give them cups of hot cocoa and sometimes hand warmers if I have any laying around. The goal of that 6 or 7 bag limit gives me encouragement for some reason. lol

I had a young kid - maybe 8 or 9 - ask me why my house was so messy. I said because we're just messy people. He said, no I think it's because you don't clean. Boom. Wise beyond his years and honestly really hit me ... even though I'd already been watching homemaking videos on RU-vid for years I was still letting myself believe the wrong message. My journey has been VERY slow but there have been improvements in action and - more importantly - in mindset.

Lol. Kids, they'll tell us how it is and It's not always pretty. 😂 Trying to stay on top of things is just an ongoing thing for me. And it's not easy. I have chronic pain and issues too which adds to the challenge but stuff needs doing. Just do what you can. There's one thing I do and that is not to leave the room empty handed. There's always something in the room that needs to be taken to another room to its regular spot. So I look around first before leaving the room to see what I need to take with me. That can really help on doing extra trips.

We usually have a fairly tidy house. But one thing that I think helps is that when things start to get out of hand, I do 'ten minutes' or 'ten things'... so if I have time, I do ten minutes in the kitchen, ten minutes in the living room, or whatever. Or, I say "put away ten things in the office". It's something my mother used to say, because ten minutes or ten things are EASY to do. You don't feel stressed. Then at the end, it really does make things better. Sometimes I pretend someone is on their way over, and the doorbell is about to ring. That gets me moving!

In my case, the major things that have helped me in my decluttering journey and cleaning is everything must have a home. Decluttering, organizing and trying to make sure I get tasks done right away (laundry, dishes, etc) makes a big difference.
@TerryProthero
@TerryProthero Год назад
I haven't got the last part of that mastered yet. The laundry basket sitting in my living room and the dishes in my sink are evidence of it. But that first part has made a huge difference for me. My house gets a little cluttered at times, but it's never going to get severely cluttered. Even on the worst day, my place can be put back together in an hour or two. And that's me working about half normal pace because of my autism and attention deficit. Although, I do have a cleaning person who does a more deep cleaning of my bathroom, kitchen, etc. about once a month to make things a little easier for me. And with me living here by myself, things don't get very dirty. So, I mostly just need to do the dishes and do a little decluttering from time to time.

Yes, everything has a home is great. Just putting an item back is so much less mentally taxing than having to think where it should go. I also love moving items to where I first looked for them if I couldn't find them straight away And getting rid of excess that make it more convenient to procrastinate. I used to have a dozen towels for a household of 2, which just ment I avoided washing my towels, had to store a pile of dirty towels, and had to mentally plan for two full loads of just towels.

I am a stay at home mom and am always struggling with comparing myself to working parents - how do they get it all done?! I recently had this realization that not only am I home all day with my 2 small children, but my husband also works from home. This means that all 4 of us are home, making messes that I then need to clean up for the 8+ hours that a traditional family with two working parents is away from the home for. *Not saying that either job is easier/harder. Just a friendly reminder, like Kallie is highlighting, that sometimes our homes are messy because we live in them!

Working from home, I felt like I was _constantly_ replacing toilet paper rolls & lightbulbs and refilling soap pumps. I needed to clean the bathroom more often and the dishwasher filled up faster! The dust bunnies multiplied faster. In an office, all these things are taken care of by someone else (except the dishes).

I really struggle with having to pick up after a full grown man and a 4yo (well the kid is learning) but your advise to tell oneself “I deserve it” is what I am constantly saying to myself. I love my house and I deserve to come home to a house that is clean and calm. I have to tell myself, “No one is coming to do this and if you didn’t have your family you would still be the only one there to do it…” it suck but I am getting peace from leaving the clutter behind. It’s been a huge boost to my mental health and it really does save some much time when there is a home for things. I still have a long way to go but have made big steps and seeing some awesome results.

I have a jute bag for charity stuff - when I see a book or an item of clothing etc that I don't want or doesn't fit etc I put it right in (or via laundry if worn). But having the place to put stuff makes me add more to the pile & clear out more.

See if that helps you shift even more into a solid routine that you know you'll keep: )

These are the only tips that have actually helped me. I loved this video. One other tip that may help some people: home decor matters. I used to not really decorate for the holidays or care about home decor any other time of the year either (broke for a while so couldn’t afford the nice home decor like I would always see in magazines and stuff). But since I’ve started trying to spice my house up decor-wise (minimalist decor style, in my case) I’ve noticed it’s easier for me to put in the effort to pick up clutter because I know that once I pick up the clutter and tidy up even a little bit, my house is going to look GOOD (versus tidy but empty and lifeless). Won’t apply to everyone, but might help someone 😊

I find that going out, even if it's just wandering around Walmart or something, is often a coping mechanism for me so that I'm not looking at my mess and clutter. I can temporarily forget it when I'm not home, but then I get home and feel stressed, embarrassed, and depressed, and the cycle continues.

Love love love how you broke this down for me. I have felt drained and overwhelmed because of the very things you talked of. And you made the solutions feel very do-able. Thank you so much for investing yourself, time and energy into helping others. Your on camera presence and delivery is also very genuine, like a friend talking to a friend. No over the top personality, cheerleaders, overly-dramatic. Just geared toward being real and helping others. You are awesome!

You nailed my internal argument about staying home to clean versus going out and doing something fun! Either way I usually feel guilty, which what is the point of that?! Staying home even for part of a day to get my home in order definitely pays off later on.

Hi Kallie, I love watching your videos, which help me to feel more in control of my mess, because I'm not the only one. A couple of months ago my boyfriend bought a robot hoover - I was away at a course for a few days and came home to find "Lucy" in the house. I always thought that 2 adults in a normal sized house should be able to manage the cleaning between us, but it ends up usually being me, and I work full time and study part time as well, so the house is usually a bit of a mess. Anyway, Lucy has been a game changer. She can run round downstairs while I walk the dog, and I come home to a clean living room floor, which makes me feel happy and less stressed! Don't get me wrong, if someone announced that they were coming over in 30 minutes, I'd still have to run round like a crazy person tidying, but I wouldn't have to get the dyson out.

yes! That was actually very helpful. We went for a drive to a new coffee shop yesterday because my sister bought a new car and decided to quit the famous expensive coffee shop you all know... and have a love/hate relationship with! I love this plan SO MUCH! I don't want to just chug an expensive coffee. I love making it an adventure!

I have always been a do it all or nothing person, taking one while day. My mother once told me that it is too overwhelming to do it that way, and it is easier to do at least one thing a day. This is one thing I heard you say also, by taking15 minutes to do a task. This was very helpful for me. I like the clearing of flat surfaces also! I always feel better when they are decluttered! Thank you. I subscribed.

Love this video. Gratification is so true. Felt it today after gutting the kids rooms of all the old unused toys, putting loads in loft to rotate round. When putting them to bed looked around and although not finished (still needs cleaning hoovering etc) it made me feel so much happier just knowing it was done. ❤️❤️❤️
