I've been a working Cosmetologist for 40 years. I suffered with cystic acne for half my life. No one can fully comprehend the depth of your words then someone who can identify with them. Unfortunately, many people do not understand that acne is a skin disorder, and although it's true that some things you apply to the skin; as well as numerous other variables, will effect how skin responds/reacts. I just turned 60, and the scars remain. I've tried multiple medical procedures for scar revision, but with little results. I still wash my face in near darkness so I don't have to spend much time looking at it. You are beautiful, and acne can not take your natural beauty from you. .For me it wasn't what others thought, it was how I perceived myself. Most people that know and love you didn't or don't "see it." I appreciate you putting yourself out there. It's cathartic for you, and helps others to see they're not alone..Godspeed..

Hello, you should try SQT microneedling, amazing results.
@HairFanatics

@@riavandijkhuizen9189 Thank you for the suggestion. I've tried everything from a pheno peel to numerous types of laser treatments. I have various types of scarring, so there isn't any singular treatment that made any significant impact. I've conceded to the fact that financially I was throwing good money after bad. If I can afford a face lift, that would ultimately offer me the best possible result. For as I age, tightening of the skin will reduce the shadow that deep scarring creates. Until that time, I just have to live with it. Thank you again for your suggestion..

Foundation became like my security blanket to hide not only acne, but also my rosacea. My social anxiety would cause me to blush all over and wearing foundation felt like my shield. But I completely stopped wearing it during the pandemic and started focusing on simple skincare for sensitive skin. My routine is so fast now and just like you its so surreal walking out the door with just moisturizer and sunscreen on. I only fill in my eyebrows with a pencil and wear lip tint. I feel beautiful ❤

Having perfect moms really does this to kids sometimes. My mom neither had a single acne nor a day of cramps in her life. So she told me to stop using moisturizer seeing my acne and basically didn't pay much heed to any menstrual issues I had (thankfully very minor). There are other things I don't feel comfortable expressing, but she definitely got the help bit very very wrong.

I can relate. My mom didn't know how to take care of curly hair so she would brush it dry. To this day, the smell of Suave Kids detangler makes me want to cringe. PSA to parents who have kids with curls: Suave kids and Aussie spray leave in is trash (not enough slip / bad nozzle). Cantu and Shea moisture (if it's in the budget) is amazing. Also, a spray bottle filled with water is your secret weapon.

Aw man, I'm so sorry you went through that. I'm a skin picker and when stress gets high I'll even invent pimples i need to pop. Its awful suffering through the shame of not being able to cover things and appear perfect. Not to mention how makeup settles into healing scabs... its obvious. I feel like my mental health is on display for all to see and judge

I have dry skin and it gets dryer with makeup, even using hydrating products. Something that might have helped with redulcing oil from your skin was getting older. Teenagers have massive hormone changes and now that you're older it can have helped to reach more of a balance between hydration and oil

I've never had acne, but I felt ugly and ashamed of myself for - well, for almost everything else! It took years and years before I realized that I was just fine "as is" - that in reality, how I felt about myself actually had very little to do with how I looked on the outside. As the damage healed, I actually did look better! And I DO feel better when I look better - it's a big circle - but connecting and belonging and feeling loved by others is oh so much more important that mere appearance. I so adore you for sharing your self - good, bad and all - bottom line you are beautiful and fun and cool and just bright ray of light in this world. You make it easier for the rest of us to believe in our worth too. Thank you.

My gran always said to me to never start wearing skin makeup or you'll never stop. Worn foundation twice in my 35 years on earth- each for being a bridesmaid and truth be told, I can't stand the stuff and imo, i dont suit it 😂 it's a comfort to so many people though and hard to break away. Well-documented as always! ❤

I followed you way back then. My face was so broken out I bought everything you had so I could cover my skin. All the products were loaded with alcohol which dried out my skin which made my oil production even more hence more breakouts! Now I know it was my diet that caused my acne.

As an esthetician, you should know that around 40-45 years old, your skin will become less oily. My lifetime all over oily skin is much less oily. I’ve changed all my skincare and body care products due to this.

I had Combination Oily skin on my forehead and nose from ages 10 to 16! I had to wash my face every 2 or 3 hours to keep it clear for several years. Eventually, it went away and I had really flawless skin, no pores or texture at all that you could see! I was lucky for a while, but when you get older you have to wear sunscreen more often and higher SPF. I wish they had Accutane when I was in the 5th grade until 10th!

I was very touched by your emotional story. I have oily, sensitive, skin that is perpetually dehydrated and rosacea, and I absolutely cannot wear liquid foundation of any kind, especially the ones with a ton of silicone. My face turns into an absolute oil slick and it gets gritty. I simply can't take too much occlusion.

I have body dismorphia and at some points it was so bad I believed people would not even rocgnize me without makeup. I sometimes feel like I have to paint my features on to look like myself.
@itchysheets1222

Annnnnnd it just occurred to me I have had body dismorphia my whole life by what you said. It wasn’t just that I didn’t think it could be that bc it wasn’t my body but my face….it hadn’t even occurred to me at all. Makeup to me is like a shield or protection from ridicule. It’s not that I feel hot when I wear it, which is what a lot of men think about women who wear it-they want to look hot or they think they’re hot or they’re trying to deceive people……idk fuck what they think anyway but it just occurred to me….i am afraid people won’t recognize me without it. That my features just disappear into my face. 🤯

I started watching, and I’m now at the end. I, too, spent way too much money on make up that I was influenced to buy by favorite people that I wanted to emulate. Now I know better. It’s a tough lesson to learn, and to look back and see all the stuff I have that I can’t do anything with anymore. The make up is too old, and it never really brought me joy anyway. What do people do with all their cosmetics when it was barely used because it never solved the problem. Hard lesson? Yes financial painful. Absolutely. Thank you for everything that you do and once again, I adore your honesty.

I feel so seen because of that video! I was also badly bullied when I was in school and that affected my selfesteem in a really negative way. I am still very anxious when I‘m around teenagers because of these experiences. It took me many years to be able to leave the house without make up because I was so insecure. Nowadays it’s gotten a lot better but I still have days where my social anxiety keeps my from going outside and socializing with other people. But seeing you overcoming your fears and traumas really makes me so happy and shows that you can become so much stronger and more confident 💕🦋

I got my first pimple on my chin and it was in kindergarten. I feel you girl. I was getting cystic breakouts for literally 20 years until I finally was able to take accutane. I use tretinoin to keep up with it. I was able to clear one of my breakouts with the ordinary aha bha peel but it wasn't enough in the end. I was bullied in school for wearing pounds of foundation from grade 5 until in my senior year I just stopped wearing makeup. Since then I only wear makeup for special occasions. Fuck what other people think. We aren't dirty or gross. It's our biology.

I'm a high school teacher and after returning from maternity leave I decided that I won't do makeup for work unless it is a special occasion. I tint my eyebrows and lashes, it feels like I don't have any expression without doing it 😅, but that's it. All I have to do in the morning is wash my face, apply vitamin-c and sunscreen and I'm ready to go. I have two reasons for this, one is that mornings with two kids are stressful enough without having to do makeup (I'm not a morning person) but the second more important reason is that I want to show the teens that you can go without makeup and be happy and confident. Seeing 12-15 year old girls with full glam every day, hearing them talk about other students like "Eww you know that one girl? Yeah the one that stopped wearing makeup!", complaining about how they are so ugly when they have a pimple just brakes my heart.

When I stopped wearing makeup my skin improved fairly quickly. Break outs lessened, and I don't seem as oily at the end of the day. Im starting adapalene today for adult acne issues, congested pores, sun damage/hyperpigmentation benefits, and any anti-aging that comes along with it is a plus. (Currently my favorite sunscreen is the Neutrogena Sport SPF 70, it's light weight for all year, gives me a glow without feeling greasy, and is purse friendly)

About the skin change, I actually had the opposite experience! My skin was very oily and once I started wearing a full face of makeup most days it became a lot more balanced and I also didn’t get as much acne anymore. I think the acne decrease was mostly because the oil was being absorbed by the makeup instead of sitting on my skin so much, but the balancing was not the makeup itself but the fact I suddenly had to take better and more regular care of my skin. I would wash my face once a day with bar soap and apply a little acne moisturizer, but now I was cleaning it very thoroughly with actual face cleansers, washing it twice a day, and using serums and more/different actives. The makeup showed when and where my skin was dry so I’d moisturize that area more, and that would make it less oily even when I wasn’t wearing makeup. I could feel a bigger spectrum of differences on how my skin felt so I got more interested in learning to care for whatever it needed in that moment, so I just got better at skincare overall! If not for getting into makeup I never would have learned to take care of my skin like that.

I wouldn't use foundation either if I didn't have to, I swear!! 😢 For those of us who have lots of issues to cover... it's a must 😢 Also, how do you know that your skin is better off without foundation? Congratulations! I wish your message can go far and reach massive. I am Asian, have very different practices in doing foundation and makeup. I am a professional and wear minimal makeup daily only after I am 45 years old. My beauty counter expert suggests to use 1 fat drop liquid foundation for the whole face, which, with practice, quite doable. Having said that, I have had laser treatment to improve my skin conditions at that point of time, which is also a big boost. Also, thanks to the internet, there are so many information make easy and available and girls no longer need to buy the most expensive products just to feel good. Again, thank you Sandra, sorry for your hardship last year and hope you all the best!

Once I started looking after my skin and it looked amazing I stopped wearing foundation and my skin type changed to normal or combo. And I also do the lash extensions it gives me confidence to leave the house without makeup. And I fell in love with skincare. My skincare is my happy place when it used to only be makeup. I always attributed the change due to using niacinimide.. however, now that I think about it.. my skin really did change when I stopped using foundation everyday. I also wasnsuper super oily and now I’m combo (and sometimes even a tad dry). So interesting!

I always used to feel like going makeupless was like going without clothes. Why would I want a stranger to see my naked face, right? (and I still say that's fair enough!) But now I'm just tired of trying to look a certain way and I go without most makeup almost every day... and my skin glows now! I feel more and more comfortable with not _trying_ to be attractive anymore.

Yes! I rarely wear foundation since several years. I am oily and I feel less oily know without makeup. Maybe it just feels more oily when my oils slowly dissolve the makeup. I actually don't know. But thanks to you ❤, my skincare is so much better and my skin has thanked me. My skin looks nicer at 40, than when I was 30 😊

Hey Cassandra, since the UV index is getting higher due to winter time coming to an end (at least supposedly in NYC) but could you do a video explaining how to reapply sunscreen during the day, even when wearing tinted sunscreen or makeup.

This video speaks to me. I stopped wearing foundation and I only do it for certain occasions but I normally, since my skin is so flawless, only wear blush and lipstick. Effortless.

So I feel like we have gone through the same. But I feel I am extremely sensitive to products. Once I minimalized my routine, things got easier. And it took a year for my skin to even out in color. It takes time when you go makeup free. Maybe a year or more. But it is worth it.

I am an esthetician as well and I trust you with my soul, have you seen the trend of people using colored zinc sticks as a concealer, really interested in your opinion on this ? THANK U ❤

I’ve only started wearing the Westman atelier foundation now, it’s expensive but my skin seems to be much happier with it. I can’t not wear foundation, I’m still that 13 year old self conscious kid with acne in my head , even though I’m 51! Words wound 😢

Exactly the same with me!! My skin used to be SO oily - I use Adapalene and have done for the past 2 years (which helped with the acne). I used to wear make up every day for years, and nowadays I only wear foundation maybe once a week... But every time I wear it, my skin gets SO oily... I'm never sure why, and it doesn't matter the primer, the moisturiser, the foundation.... It always makes me oily :(

I had a big old spot on my nose for my sweet sixteenth, it was so massive that I could have drawn a smiley face on it! Fabulous! 20 years later, today I have a little friend on my chin. But I’m happy not to wear makeup, it just doesn’t work for me. Live happily x

First a treatment with accutane but then dropping the foundation helped me get rid of my acne for good. I only sometimes get a little pimple or two right before my period starts but other than that my skin is clear. I wear foundation once or twice a month but I make sure that I don’t wear it too long and wash it off properly. I invest in good, non-comedogenic foundation but I still notice how my skin looks less glowy and somewhat tired after a day of foundation.

It's good you stopped. I find now as I'm getting older, not sure how long I'll be able to wear foundation. It does not work on mature skin... starting to notice around my eyes it gets into all the fine lines etc. and it dries my skin out! the issue for me is that i'm pale AF and have purple dark circles and red eyelids.. man lol they are the reason i wear makeup since i was 15

I got my first cystic pimple at 13. It was on my nose, so ugly and worst of all it was painful! I was bullied constantly. We went on school break and came back and people were saying things like “what, that things still on your face?!”. I struggled with cysts for a long time but was lucky enough to start in the cosmetic beauty industry at 18 and learn how to nurture my skin. I also learnt how to be my most beautiful on the outside to match my inside. I still get them occasionally at 37 years old but have learnt to appreciate my skin for what it is.

No I notice the exact same thing with the oiliness! I’ve started working from home most of the time in the last 3 months so I’m wearing foundation 1-2 times per week and when I’m not wearing it, I’m reaching for the blotting sheets maybe once a day but when I am wearing it, it seems like I go through 4-5 a day.

I have rosacea, and I’ve found I cannot wear foundation without my nose and cheeks getting hot and flushed by the end of the day. I wear a light layer of green toned color correcting moisturizer under tinted mineral sunscreen and a bit of concealer. My skin is much happier, and I feel more comfortable both on a physical and emotional level.

I don’t wear foundation as often as what I used to. I’ve also removed vitamin C from my skincare routine because I don’t think my skin likes it. My skin is sensitive, and the vitamin c serums causes irritation. I’m still trying to get my skin back to normal, and that’s actually why I haven’t been wearing a lot of foundation.

*Dehydrated Skin & Actives* . I'm almost 57 and was super oily/acne prone most of my life. I used harsh stripping products marketed for acne for years then would have to moisturizers which clogged my pores. It was a viscous cycle. My skin transformed when I started using K-beauty skin care and actives that were appropriate like salicylic and glycolic acid. My skin is finally "normal" with a slightly oily T-zone. I still can't wear heavy moisturizing creams, instant clogged pores. My skin loves hydrating toners and essences. I wear Wet-N-Wild tinted hydrator daily as my foundation. It evens out my complexion without being heavy and I like the satin finish. Strategic use of color correctors was also a game changer, much better than concealer or heavy foundation for me. My Grandson is 19 and acne prone. I gave him CosRx products to try because I wish I knew then what I know now. Thank you for sharing your journey.

Hey! .I tried the Clinique serum foundation today, it has skin care Ingredients in in , vit.C, hyaluronic acid and more. It blew my mind , i looked years younger, a concealer wasn,t even necessary. As a long time BB creme user i love this. My skin feels smooth and clear after i cleansed my face . Maybe a good alternative for a regular foundation.? I know that no make is the best but as a 58 year old i just want to look the best ..bye

Same! When i wear foundation, and i dont wear it that much. Only for night outs or something.. 1-2 times in 6 months.. i am so oily to! And i used many different ones. Still.. it makes me so shiny after a couple of hours. Thats why i dont like it so much.. rather use a fake tan night before.. and then some blush & bronzer for make up 😅 and maybe a little concealer here and there

I also sometimes feel use foundation to cover my face but i never find perfect shade match which is so hard. If you gonna use makeup it's better to keep it simple. I always do my eyebrows and eyeshadow and just lips. Not wearing powder or foundation at all or any else face products even i have pimples or dark spots.

Yea foundation made me feel older because I noticed wrinkles more...but foundation also evens my skin and can hide my pores. But I also feel like wearing foundation makes my skin more oily and feel heavy :,) I have to go really light on what am wearing on my face :,)
