5 Simple SEA and COAST Photography Tips

In this video, I share 5 simple tips to get you started photographing the sea and coast. Seascape, or sea and coast photography is probably my favourite kind of landscape photography. There are so many things to keep in mind and I like that challenge. It often makes for some incredibly dynamic photographs where no two are the same. Catching those waves at the right time with the right flow without destroying your photography gear can be hard!

A great video and beautiful photos, Mads. But let's be honest, most of this has nothing in common with the vast majority of seas and coasts that most people have access to. This is mostly focused on rocky foregrounds and beautiful mountain scenery, with just a "splash" of water thrown in halfheartedly (pun intended). It would be nice to see you go to a normal, "boring" seaside and give some tips to improve your photos there.

Hey Mads, since there are no stupid questions I'll give it a shot (please keep in mind I am a complete beginner just learning things from scratch): you're taking multiple pictures and then you're Photoshopping them in order to stack focus and light so everything is... well... sharp and bright, which is an interesting technique I'd never think about. However, if this is your goal - why not to just take a quick single pic with your phone instead if you're going to severely alter the reality in PS later on anyway? Like, smear half of the hill with a light brush and then play with foreground geometry a bit to make it look fancier. I can't force the aesthetic part of my brain to use PS and I only try to use lightroom for minor adjustments, otherwise it feels like cheating (to me, of course!). Where do we draw the line? Is this still photography (no pun intended)? Is this "computer graphics"? Is this what people call "art"? Do people simple "lie" on their pictures for fun and profit? Sincerely, your confused student.

These locations were extremely beautiful and the rocky foregrounds were spectacular; they would have been very good just on their own as abstract pattern shots without the landscape backgrounds.

I understand why you are shooting portrait mode, but when you first show the image & it's zoomed in, we get a full screen image, then you show the portrait version , and it's like full top to bottom, but only the middle third of the screen, like 1/3rd black, 1/3rd image then 1/3rd black... Look at the image with the reflection of the mountain in the rock pool, brilliant, then it shrinks to 1/3rd of the screen and disappears into the distance... Could you not do three or four vertical images into a pano ? Great vlog though, as always, Thnx.

Hey Mads, these are all excellent tips. I’d love a whole video sometime in something you mentioned briefly: keeping a subject or background element from getting too small whe shooting wide-angle. I know pushing subject to top of image can expand it using the wide-angle distortion of the lens, but any other tips? Does setting up the tripod closer or farther from the ground make a difference in itself?

Thank you, MADS, for another informative and inspirational video. I am headed to the California coast (Big Sur) in April and had a question on using the Big Stopper with slowing down the waves over the rocks. Question is did you focus stack so that you could get the foreground rocks tack sharp, along with the mountain in the background? Did you need to merge more than 1 photo? Thanks, Linda Henderson, Dallas, Texas.
