This is probably one of the most helpful videos to come out recently. I think half the challenge of a truly smart home is finding brands and devices that will play together nicely. Interoperability is still a major issue with the whole connected home / smart home thing.

So if I’m understand Matter correctly, it’s basically an overhead control system, that connects things that work with it. I mainly use Hubitat, but in addition to that I use SmartThings which is linked to my Hubitat, only for HomeControl with Harmony, and for a lock that won’t connect to Hubitat. I link all that back to HomeKit via HOOBS, mainly for CarPlay control. I also have Wyze and Ring cams, my Ring cameras I can control the lights from Hubitat, and view the feeds in HomeKit. Wyze cams are the only thing I haven’t been able to get integrated, and I’ll be interested to see what the bring to Matter. I also use Alexa to control my Ecovac vacuums, those are controlled from a virtual switch in Hubitat. I also have my SmartDry in Alexa, and use Alexa to turn on a virtual switch from Hubitat to control dryer notification, but for some reason it won’t turn the switch off when the dryer stops, working with them on that. I also begrudgingly use IFTTT, but only to control Wyze cam notifications so I only get them when I’m away, and to turn on a virtual switch in Hubitat when my GE dishwasher is done. That said, while my Hubitat works great since it’s all local control, I’m hopping that I can get local control on everything else, and avoid the cloud on everything but my cameras.
@AutomateYourLife
@AutomateYourLife 2 года назад
And getting local control will be a big benefit of Matter! We're gonna have a video on that very soon here, so hopefully it'll explain lots for you on that. Matter should also lessen the number of intermediary hubs you have, though I'm still waiting for the folks at Hubitat to say what they're doing with matter. :)

Lutron Caseta works with Every platform out there. They do have predominately light switches, but they also have motion sensors and smart blinds. I would also add Aqara to the list. They have a wide variety of devices, are coming out with Thread versions of some of their sensors, and are all in on Matter.
@AutomateYourLife
@AutomateYourLife 2 года назад
I agree with Lutron for sure. They're very much a platform that works with everything. I wish they had some more options for us on smart gear though! As for Aqara...generally good, but no SmartThings or Hubitat really (some devices can direct pair...but it's hit or miss). Alexa integration actually is fairly weak, as most sensors can't trigger routines. Same with cameras. So I think they've got a bit more work to do, but honestly...both those companies are great!

Brian, I encourage you to do a video on Sonoff RF devices. Bring to light the bonus of benefits with RF. I am a big fan of Flic buttons. But It’s great to have a bunch of buttons in single bundle. I converted some of my smart wall switches and my WiFi plugs to the RF enabled version and it makes use so much easier. Sonoff produces a WiFi Smart Wall Touch Switch called the TX series (~$23). These are not the traditional plate with large button models. The TX series is a glass touch screen. And a version called the T2 series include a 433MHz - RF - version. Like everyone these days, they have voice assistant, app support and touch action. But the T2 includes RF that you control from a small remote or an 8-button version programmable for many switches. Unfortunately, they don’t yet make a RF version of the regular Smart WiFi plug that is compact. However, I found a work around that’s cheap. I purchase their Basic (single port) WiFi switch - Basic RFR2 and RFR3 version (~$9). I added M/F ends from an extension cord and bingo, also have the features of the WiFi plug with RF benefits too. It pairs with the 8-button RF module !($8) too. So now, select device locations have 1) voice assistant, 2) app support, 3) local on/off and 4) RF switching via 8-button module.
@AutomateYourLife
@AutomateYourLife 2 года назад
Good stuff! I like some Sonoff gear but have sometimes found them hit or miss for my setup. Sometimes a bit too...blocky/ugly? Anyways, I'll have a look!
@s.barnes-
@s.barnes- 2 года назад
@@AutomateYourLife Accurate assessment. Some a ugly. And I have been arguing with the factory tech support because their current ZB Bridge is terrible and the buttons and sensors drop offline every 12 hours or less. Must restart the bridge and not worth the effort. $100 invested in devices that won't work until the produce SB Bridge 2.0, (not firmware issue either)

Here's an incompatibility I just ran into. New LG tvs cannot be turned on by Google home (Assistant). To turn on an LG tv with Google home, you buy a chromecast. In home, give it an easy name like Chrome. Then, instead of saying "hey Google turn on the tv)... which doesn't work ... you say "hey Google turn on the Chrome " and it works. Turning on an LG tv with home is the ONLY thing you cannot do with home.

Kasa have become my "go-to" WiFi devices to use with Smartthings, but I'm increasingly moving toward Zigbee for most of my Hubitat integrations. (I use Sharptools for my animations and kiosks so I use both Smartthings and Hubitat.) I have NOT had much success with Meross, however. Their wall switches were clunky, loud and unreliable in my experience and I have replaced almost all of those I initially installed. Perhaps I was just unlucky... As for Amazon, I am forbidden to introduce a "spy" into the house - in the form of a smart speaker of ANY brand, so their compatibility is moot for me...

If you're using a hub, then Zigbee and Z-Wave give you a lot of opportunity to expand for sure. And I'd generally use those too David (and do). Sad to hear about Meross though! I think they had some stuff early on that was at best OK, but maybe they'll see this feedback and fix it up!
