In 2019 I signed up for my first time ever local pleinair event where live. I searched how to pleinair & found you on tube, I’ve been following you ever since. "If you're green you grow, if you're ripe you rot." Love that nugget. I've discovered, after taking your challenge to really examine what I'm doing, that there is a third state: petrification! I've been drawing / painting since I was 5 so, over 4 decades later and a successful engineering career as my main job, I let ego get in the way of doing anything in case I'm not as good as before! How unrealistic to be so scared stiff. It's not like a professional athlete can do what they do without practise, and art is the same. I sit here watching you in complete amazement. I have never contacted you previously, however I've watched for quite some time. I completely 'get you' as a 'realist', I have always held Frederic Edwin Church is complete regard as the artist I most admire. I will readily tell you that I have not a thousandth of your talent, yet appreciate and admire your skill. I am retired and as we speak, am moving to a tropical location, with the desire of improving my painting ability. Oh man, this technique I used for a digital painting - the most detailed I ever made. This is a great opportunity to try the knowledge acquired there. I’ve been glazing on and off for many years and recently went back to experimenting because I’m seeking that color glow you can’t get otherwise. Wouldn’t you know I’m also using Rublev, I love the way it doesn’t make the glaze too runny. And coincidentally I was at Monument Valley today and captured a ton of references so this is truly great timing! Thanks for all you do, it’s so inspiring.

Amazing painting with obvious hard work put into it. I just wonder if the white dots (highlights) are a little distracting from the image as a whole and maybe take a percentage of realism from the painting that is slightly noticeable (just a note)
I have followed your videos now for years and have found them inspiring Andrew. After working most of my life in factories I now spend my days doing what I did as a teenager. Drawing and painting. I only wish you had been about in my younger years. I might have spent my time doing what I loved instead of doing what I thought I had to do. Much respect to your wonderful art. Thanks for sharing

Andrew, once again thank you. I listened, I stopped the video often and reflected on your words, and took notes. Not so much for painting but for Life. Learning to paint- so many life lessons. Art is all illusionary-we seek to represent something three-dimensional on a 2-dimensional surface. So is Life- illusionary. Your 5-step process can be adopted to LIFE itself. QUESTION, EXPERIMENT, BE INSPIRED TO ..., COMMIT TO THE EXPERIMENT (do not live in fear of failure-embrace it, it is how we learn- it does not mean embracing that which is knowingly self-destructive but if you fall down such a rabbit hole, you will figure it out in the next step),ANALYZE THE RESULTS (Like sailing- you may not be going directly to where you want to go but are you on the right tack. The sailing analogy also leads to the next step. MAKE A PLAN - check your internal compass, refer to your maps (the Masters, your Moral self, whatever it was that inspired you). Jib or Come About, work with the wind to get to where you want to go or explore. A friend, recently diagnosed with cancer was asked by his Holistic Doctor 8 questions, the answers of which would provide direction for him to be healthier and thus improve his immune system. I found this fascinating. Diet and exercise are obvious but the one that still has me thinking was, "What brings you JOY ?" Not happiness or pleasure but JOY. It is a tough question. I never allowed myself to embrace the question. Upon reflecting on your 5-Step Plan. It is the same plan I am using to come up with an answer to the question.

I've also been experimenting with glazing, but mainly with large florals and still life. My first real attempt that worked was a still life of apples in a basket. I've had numerous people ask me how I got the skin to look so real and glow, although I didn't quite manage the same with the basket. I wouldn't say that it was deliberate, but it was an exercise in working from light coloured glazes to darker glazes by adding layers of transparent paint and the magic happened by itself. However, I did thin a lot with a mixture of liquin and oil. That in itself was an experiment because if you don't get the ratio of paint, oil and liquin right, the next layer can bead up. I'm yet to really experiment with glazing in landscapes, so was very excited to see this video pop up on my feed. Now I realise that I have actually been doing some glazing in my landscapes, mainly to create shadows and darken areas, without realising that glazing was what I was doing.

Thank you Andrew for another great and inspiring video ❤! Learning is indeed crucial! I recently noticed a big improvement in my paintings when I realized that oftentimes it's best to lay down the paint just by touching the surface and not painting in a physical way. I've been striving for smooth painting surfaces always painting and softening out with a big brush in order to avoid 3D marks but realized that leaving the marks can actually improve the paintings so, yes, let's be humble, open minded and keep learning 😊!
I've used an airbrush all my art life from the 1960's (before Andrew .... you were a gleam in your Daddy's eyes ;) ...) I first applied water colours over water colour painted skys and water reflections intensifying the different colours... plus adding a reduced Payne's grey to landscapes to move items "Back" like with the different mountains. The advantage was not coming back, using a wet brush that would lift the base colour... I love your applications and post.... keep up the good work... I have retired here in Sydney, but move here in 1979 after 9 years US Army... 101st Airborne (Combat tour 2/502 Inf Vietnam) while I also finished my college at night classes.... I've tried oils with the same process as it did work well with Acrylics... but found it too toxic and SLOW! I met Audrey Flack (who airbrushed oils) in the 1970's in Chicago I think (god I'm old) and she told me she wore a spray painters mask all day painting oils.... Unique work, but that mask had to hurt after awhile. Half the fun of being and artist is applying different art fields to create something impressive and unique.
Spectacular painting and valuable insight working with transparent paints! I learned to paint over a black and white image first by applying glaze over that, making a fluid surface for details to keep working. And yes Rublev is a great medium, slow drying but forgiving which takes patience! Using transparent paints with impasto medium is another experience worth trying! Great video Andrew!
I especially liked your fifth recommendation, to, coming to the end with one painting, to plan for the next one. This seems what's happening naturally to me, as every painting I do leaves me with new ideas, be it technical details, or new compositions, and the like. Having just finished a series of sketches, I take your advise, and outline one of these on a canvas, to kick off a longer painting session to follow later. Thanks!

Just awesome man!... I see some artists work, where they could stop halfway thru or stop after an underpainting and it would still look great. This my friend, takes the cake! 🍰 You could've stopped at ANY point and it would've been great. But when you had that sky and clouds colored in with the "black" & "white" underpainting... that looked bada$$! still one of my most inspiring "teachers" 🤘🏼👽
so after all this how-to and work-in-progress we get to the end just to see 2/3 of the finished painting with some ads on top of it... very nice..................
I wonder how many hours it took to complet that painting , i have taken up to 60 hours to do some of my water color paintings am now doing oils gave up water colors
That's hard to really calculate because glazing often means multiple layers of very thin paint and there's drying time in between. Why did you give up watercolours?. I mainly work in oils but have recently begun watercolour. I joined an art society and getting a wet oil painting home without smudging it, getting it all over the car and me in the process was proving impossible. Watercolours are way easier to transport.
@Warped Weft well originally i started out in oils many years before , i needed a change i use pallet knifes and don't try to do realisim as i did with water colors mine were very photographic o its a great change for me to do something different .
Andrew how do decide when the painting is complete? In my unqualified eyes it could have been finished way before you finally cleaned your brushes. Do you sometimes struggle to decide enough is enough?
I do enjoy listening to you and what you because you make sense l 'm way past joining a painting group I'm loosing my eyesight little by little and my favourite arist Claude Monet and like him in my later years I'm born French and Australian from the heart I've painted hundreds if not thoursant paintings now I paint for the pleasure of givings this paintings to anyone and l'm pleased to see your passions and I would like to say well done and keep it up. Listening to you, as well as many other artists…… I sense that you are somehow intrinsically connected to, and are as one with the world in which you live - without being too ‘religious’, I think that you love the world and the people in it, on a deeply spiritual level. That deep emotion you feel is what comes out in your work and stirs the viewers hearts. AI will never be able to replace artists.
Wow, what a thoughtful comment. Thanks so much for this. I try to connect with something deeper, as a flawed and hopelessly "human" individual, but yes, connection is key and yes, I do care about others, particularly when it comes to making art!
It's true of a lot of people who paint intuitively. I get sick of people asking me about the "story" of my painting. It's the same story for every one of my paintings. I saw something that I connected with and I wanted to recapture it my way. I can't paint photographically so it always turns out as an interpretation of what I saw. Is there anything wrong with that? Does it have to have a deep mystical meaning behind it? My painting is for my pleasure. If someone wants to buy it, so well and good but I'm not going to "paint to sell" as that just takes away all the pleasure for me.
How does one retain sufficient interest and patience in a painting to complete the detail portion of a painting. Is it because one lacks the skills and technique?
You are indeed one of the Very best! Master artist. How to be the absolute best? I think it’s more in that each master artist is a bit different. But, you certainly are one of the best!!
Hi Andrew thanks for your video’s, becouse of you I am working with liquin original but i am struggling with glacing now. (I was used to make the medium water you talked about) do you use liquin original 1/4th part paint for glazing or do you use another medium for this step?
