Very cool video. There's an ancient resource called the Treasury of Archaic names, now available in a PDF. It has an exhaustive list of surnames taken from professions, and I used to use them to populate my city's mercantile districts. Pretty good naming resource, too, if you're not into online name generators.

One thing I love about this is that it emphasizes how little a map is needed. One thing I got from DungeonCraft (channel, not this sponsor) is just to make a quick grid and put certain districts in those spaces. That way you know basically where things are in relation to each other. It’s also a cool way to inspire particular encounters with the flavor of the city district (useful for towns and above probably). Adds maybe 1 minute to the process 👍🏼 🕰

Dont forget about charcoal burners, the smiths need them to be able to do their jobs and because they often stay outside the city near a river to do their jobs, its got potential for side quests. I recommend kingdom come deliverance its got a ton to learn that can benefit DMs

Your video is excellent! I had been using a city that hit a lot of STAND but having a sense of things a city needs (and hearing your frankly awesome off-the-cuff ideas) really helped me to polish and plan parts of my city my group has yet to visit. All of your videos, especially this one, have really reduced my stress and preparation time over world building. Seriously, I used this video to build a druidic citadel turned refugee city in the fey wild that has yet to be discovered as one of several places my group could discover and explore. I was amazed at how I was able to do proper exploration ready world building for my campaign at the same time as I am building sessions. You have made planning my session truly fun.

Another solid video! Lots of useful tips as usual. I really need to share my ad lib villages and cities that I created on the Discord, lol. I think you (and others) would get a kick out of a few. I do love how easy you make this with just a few high points, and the ready-made NPCs is a nice idea. I've had random name tables for every game for years and years. The 3rd edition DMG had GREAT NPC characteristics! :) Anyways, thanks again!

DAAAMN! I’m having a session tomorrow with my players where they’re going into a city (more like a kingdom but it’s really small) and I had 2 weeks to prepare. I haven’t done a thing though cuz’ this is like my 2nd time running an adventure and I just got overwhelmed and procrastinated the whole time. No excuses ofc. I should’ve started earlier. Anyways-THIS, this vid is AMAZING! Like, every dm (I think/imo) NEEEDS this. 4:13 wainwrights, shipwrights, swordsmiths and weaponsmiths, armorsmiths, baker, butcher, bowyer and fletcher, locksmith, roofer, goldsmith, cook, and dyer. I think the distinction between blacksmiths, weaponsmiths, and armorers is important. Blacksmiths do not make weapons, and can be found in most locations. A rare blacksmith might know how to make martial weapons, but most can only make simple weapons if asked. Weaponsmiths and armorers, on the other hand, will make all the martial weapons and metal armor you need, but will only exist in towns and cities.

Maybe it would be cool if the construct defenders there would be one sort of super defender in the middle of the city that had jewels that were magical. The defenders haven't been used in a long time and the pcs don't know they're constructs, there's just a lot of big statues around the city, but the inhabitants have a saying they often talk about not taking the jewels from the statues because you might dissapear. It would be like a fable maybe like some young thief tried it one day and was never seen again. Anyway thanks for the video I think breaking it down like this makes it a lot easier and less intimidating.

Just some sort of "Enchanted" ice only workable by this magical Winterforge I was reading about!!! Their village will be located up in the Sword Mountains (Running my game in the Forgotten Realms) near this dead, gigantic Frost Giant corpse. I'm thinking maybe this Giant used to work the forge before he met his demise

Wow! I’ve always had a list of ‘possible’ NPCs for those ‘on the street’ or ‘in the tavern’ for people they may randomly speak to. Never thought of this for shops! The time you’ve just saved people! The theme and trade is the biggest take away from this and how it feeds into everything else. On the note of those ‘random open NPCs’ you call them to drop anywhere in the city - how do you handle the names of shops: do you just say ‘there are a handful of blacksmiths’, do you prename them, or just a random list of names that only come to life when imagined to life by the players (like the NPCs). Think I’m going to start veering to the ‘comes time life if it’s imagined to life, unless it’s part of something that’s needed.

I have a generic list of “smithery/ anvil/ ironclad” etc as suffices and then flavor it with the trade So random blacksmith for the undead city example: Deaths Anvil Boom done there’s a name on the fly with a list is inspiration if needed!

Sperm is better than stand in only one way. That’s if your campaign is going to be all inside one city. The level of detail needed etc. but I think I’d still use stand to get the basics then use sperm to get to the details. Did I just say is stand then sperm? Oof
