Females with undiagnosed autism can often exhibit quite subtle traits growing up (and carry them over to adulthood) that can easily be mistaken for something else. So I wanted to share some of these from my own personal experience, in the hopes it could help someone else :)

It’s hard never being able to realize people are making fun or being passive aggressive.

Yess!! I know. So you end up either laughing when noone else does, because you think it's a joke, or just looking confused and everyone looks at you weird 🤦‍♀

I can often detect passive aggression (I’m guilty of it, too, but I try hard to avoid it), but I’ve often missed ‘jokes’ where the other person seemed serious, but they had to literally tell me they were joking. Same with pretend crying, which I loathe unless it’s obviously a joke. It’s exhausting sometimes.

Let me know if any of this resonated with you!! I honestly thought for so long that it was just me and I was a weirdo. But I'm learning that there are so many others, and it's amazing to share experiences ❤

There is a lot more social norms and expectations placed on girls and women, and we're basically taught to put up and shut up about a lot of things. Boys are given a free pass far more than girls, and boys are not expected to mature as quickly as girls. Society is unfortunately still very sexist and patriarchal; also, as a woman, it's so much harder to get taken seriously by medical professionals. My brother, dad, and grandad all have/ had autism, but my sis and I were never even assessed for it, despite showing signs of it. At 34, I still haven't had any kind of assessment for it, and my daughter hasn't either, despite showing signs. It's so frustrating, and I'm really glad you were able to get diagnosed. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge of autism

Sometimes I suffer from misophonia,too.But when it comes to being right on time,I MUST be exact on time! Even 5 min is inacceptable for me.😢

All of those traits does not make one worse, or stupid, or anything... just different. And that's just beautiful :) My wife check all the same checkboxes

I find you so relatable and very easy to listen to 😊. You explain things very well! Currently on the very long NHS waiting list for an assessment 😬. My worst sensory issue is bananas and once, to be polite and to mask, I ate a banana creme brulee when my friend's parents took me out for dinner. I was sick all night 🤣.
@CharlotteElizabeth3000
@CharlotteElizabeth3000 Месяц назад
Ahh thanks so much! The banana thing made me laugh, it's lentils for me, and I have vivid memories of trying to force down lentil soup to the same effect as your creme brulee so I can fully relate 😂 hope you're not waiting too long for your assessment! The waiting can be the worst part.

Omg the fairy lights and lava lamps are eye opening for me didn't realise you could visually stim also the clumsiness 😭😭😭😭 Just to add this while damn video is amazingly informative you have validated maaaan of my own behaviours that I also thought was just me being weird, my therapist wanted me to get a diagnosis but it's so expensive/long wait time here! Had to have a small giggle at the bossy play because my sister was not allowed to play dolls with me because she got the characters and voices wrong everutime 😂 Also it was concise!

Hi, just want to say I stumbled on you're channel about 24 hours ago... and as a man with autism spectrum I've learned quite a bunch from you and had a few laughs. Especially this video about female autism. There is much more to learn about this topic, thanks for sharing this. Glad to subscribe and like 😊👍🏻 ❤️

@@CharlotteElizabeth3000 that's true it's a spectrum after all ❤️ it can apply to both. I do seem to mask it like most female did, but it's always been there ofcourse. Sending you positive vibes from the Netherlands 🇳🇱. Keep on being you! 💪🏻

The bullying stories sound interesting for a future video, and do you think you knew you were being bullied on a deeper level, but went along with it 'as a joke' to maintain "friendships"?

I am a 50 y/o male ... I was missed too, despite very obvious signs. I was even misdiagnosed 15 years ago as not autistic after a 15 minute interview with a psychiatrist (oh isn't socialised healthcare wonderful). I am very likely inattentive-ADHS also.

I thought everyone did these things haha. Late diagnosed adhd but not ASD. The t-rex hands thing omg. Esp when driving, I have a tight claw in my lap and need to remind I'm better off with 2 hands on the wheel.

I have 5 lava lamps.I don't want to hazard a guess as to the number of hours I have spent staring into the colorful flowing abyss that these things are🤟 I didn't know any these were more prevalent to girls/women🤔 Learning every day! Also, I have slightly tweaked versions of all of these. Love your content… Love (My wife is British. I speak fluent Britain-ese) 😝

The last bit made me laugh 😂😂 thanks for watching! I should have clarified more in the video (there is a text disclaimer at the beginning, but should have maybe said a bit more on it), but these are ALL traits that males can and do share, it's literally just traits I had/still have, and are slightly more subtle than the 'norm' - i.e. females can hide traits a little better than males, and therefore default to the more 'subtle' stims/traits etc. Sorry for ramble, hope this made sense 😅

When I was 10 there were a few girls that I really didn’t know who all gathered around me one day and ushered me way out in a field with a couple of trees, telling that even though it wasn’t my official birthday that they had a surprise for me. And I was like “Really?” Well, down to one of the trees we go where they suddenly commenced to trying to best me up. I fell for it. Totally believed them. I’m still gullible.

Clumsiness can also be a sign of dyspraxia which has high comorbidity with autism

Hello Charlotte from my Jerusalem Israel. How are you? I hope work for you is well as well as your start to 2024. I am happy to introduce myself to you. My name is Jonathan Trauner. I will be 30 in Jerusalem this May 15th 2024. I work as a software algorithms tester at Mobileye in Har Hotzvim Jerusalem Israel. I am a poet and performing artist who loves to sing. I was hit by a huge tall tour bus in the area of Mobileye in Jerusalem Israel on June 18th 2023. I broke my left collarbone in three places. I finished recovering last month in Jerusalem. My dream is to become the first poet and artist with Autism to win a Emmy Grammy Oscar Academy Award and Tony Award in 2025 in Los Angeles and to establish Jerusalem Israels second ever coed acapella singing group The JerusaHymns.
