13:13 "This is the rich man's worldtimer because I saved about 30 grand buying this". Smart, reasonable, creative and humble, i.e., pure class. This is why TGV has the most successful watch channel on youtube.
@@Sovereign_sparky Wow. Just wow. Do you think I said what I said just because he saved 30 grand? I am sorry for you if you don't have the finesse to understand.
Steve Franks by your logic a caravan and a mansion are the same size, shape, and function exactly the same and the only difference is the mansion is higher quality and more luxurious?
I've been rocking my63b191 accu swiss percheron Automatic as my everyday watch for years and it's been great... not a vintage watch but goes to the under rated comment
This would be a great series. The vintage watch market is so much fun. And like you mentioned this is a weird segment full of risk but it’s also full of fun pieces that you can just wear and enjoy for their uniqueness. It would be fun to learn about more pieces available at different price points.
I love an old watch, they remind me of simple times when my father was off to work and the last thing he would slap on his wrist right after his wedding ring! He's been retired for some time, however he continues to sport his love for watches and enjoys them to this day... He will be 82 in July this year! Thanks for the history lesson and Horoligy on these fine time pieces! Mucho success on you new Endeavors with watch box, but you do realize HUGO is the Star of your channel! Lol, great content and media my friend!
I'm going to miss the background of the "War Room" so much which I have to come love to see over the years, but I trust your elegant taste and judgement will bring something equally as tasteful and "cozy" to your new setting in Philadelphia. Congratulations on your recent achievement. This was a great video, as always, TGV. Thank you so much for producing such great content!
Always a pleasure my friend, thank you for the truly flattering words. I will try and make the new war room as cozy as I can. O&U! :D Best regards, TGV
@@theurbangentry Can you have the war room shipped over to Philly? There are Pyramids from Egypt in the MET museum, shipping one room shouldn't be a problem :D
My Dubey & Schaldenbrand automatic is my favourite vintage with close contenders the Gruen Precision, the Girard Perigaux Sea Hawk and the Universal Geneve. Oh yeah, forgot the no name Omega..........in short, vintage rocks!
I myself have a 1978 Hamilton Field Watch that's still in my work rotation. I regulated it myself and now it's pretty spot on and no longer "slow". We got a new kid in the network team who kept being late... "Boy, the watch on my wrist is older than you and yet keeps track of time better than you do." He didn't last long.
Let the ppl know fortis is out of business ! Glycine is made by invicta ! & oris is almost bankrupted ! Yet he tell you to buys them. Because he bought them up cheap to sell on amazon ! Notice no tag heur or zenith ! You can’t buy 500 at a time like fortis & oris ! It’s all about $$$ now he just sold us to ( watch box )
I have a 35 year old quartz Buliva sea star that’s been in the drink from southern Chile up to south bearing sea to the old blighty channel and points in betwixt. It’s beat up but Still works like a charm.
Great take on some classic watches TGV! I have 6 Benrus Vietnam watches I have been buying over the last 3 years. The prices as you said can be extremely cheap but some insane around $1000+US!😱Thankfully I got in before they took off. Maybe I pushed the prices up🤣 I am a fanatic Steve McQueen fan & suffice to say my Benrus matches my ‘68 GT390 Fastback Mustang. 😎 Also I have the almost identical Bulova you bought. I love the Art Deco look. Such a classy, classic watch. I collect vintage along with new. Too much choice on all fronts! Thx for the vid!👍🏼
Elated you’ll be keeping up the channel. I’ve been with you since the good old days of 50,000 followers and here you are at 300k!, ( WatchBox seems measly at around 100k in comparison). Your content is still fresh and relatable. This has always been your gift: approachable tastes yet aspiring for just a little more. While you slobber Homer Simpson-like over over the new merchandise available to you, don’t forget your roots and the thorough nature of your reviews- i.e. living with the watch before offering your opinion. This was an important distinction between you and other channels and what made you special. Keep up the excellent work and may good fortune continue to find you.
Didn't Sir Edmund Hillary carry a Smiths to the top of Everest, while also wearing a Rolex Oyster Perpetual? I'd love to get one for my Dad to wear while he's tooling around in his Triumph TR-4 (British Racing Green, of course). Thanks for the idea, and the great video!
Lovely programming for a Sunday afternoon with my daughters. My mother owned a mechanical bulova from the early 70s and just recently gave it to me because “your father said you like watches”. I’m thinking about getting it serviced and keeping it for my eldest daughter. Like I said before, TGV, we are building a legacy.
Hi TGV This kind of videos might be the ones I enjoy most from you - the ones where you introduce me to brands/watches that I didn’t even know about. This kind plus - off cause - your in depth reviews...😉 There is a lot of junk out there, but there surely is a lot of hidden treasures too. Nice with some guidance. I especially like the Bulova and the Benrus in this case. Some time ago you opened my eyes for the Universal Geneve Polerouter and I’ve been looking for a nice example since. It takes time but you know how it is...BAM, suddenly the right one is there. Well, I’m talking about watches here, not women... Keep up the good work👍
Thank you Kjeld, that means so much to me. This to be honest is what I enjoy the most. LOL at your UG/women comment, so true, happens the other way too! ;-) O&U and happy hunting. Best regards, TGV
I have a gold smiths astral that was given to my granddad for his 25 years service in 1965 and it still works.so I have an original vintage piece with a lot of sentimental value to me.great vid. Good work fella
Thank you Rick, What a truly special and magical piece to own, I hope it brings you many more years of enjoyment. 1965 too, the peak of Smith watchmaking too! Best regards, TGV
The intro was incredible 😂 🙏 Brilliant video as well, really interesting and informative as always. Love these older watches. To me they are cooler than a brand new Rolex ever will be...
A couple of years ago my father received a vintage Bulova watch from a mate for Christmas. 34mm case round with small lugs and acrylic crystal. Stamped made in New York with a serial number of the year 1963, the year Kennedy was shot. A nice piece with a story and a bit of history.
I just got my benrus in the mail on Monday! So happy I was out ahead of the TGV tax. Mine is 1969, plastic case, with the 7 jewel belforte movement. Love it. You lucked out getting the steel at that price - I paid the same for the plastic case. Not sure if I overpaid, but if I did, we aren’t talking big money in absolute terms.
I don't think you over paid, I think I just got really really lucky like you said. I was willing to pay double to be honest. Enjoy it my friend, a real bit of American history on the wrist! Enjoy Chris, please let me know how it goes with your Benrus. Best regards, TGV
Ohh, by the way love the Benrus watch, I actually myself have a 1964 mil-spec one. So I can appreciate your excitement for this watch plus, the history behind it. Would love to see a video on the history of Benrus.
TGV = Tristano Goes Vintage. Those are some very cool bargains. Love the Hamilton Power and the Benrus mil-spec! Personally I would love to see more vintage watch content. Looking forward to the next one. Regards, Koen
Been looking for a Hamilton World Time Power for years. (Ever since this video posted.) Finally found one from 1995, mint cond, new/old stock unused, case, box, papers, tags for $1K. Not the best price/deal for this watch but I am very happy to have one in my collection. Finally.
Great video TGV, I especially love the Benrus. I love watches of this era that have a parkerized finish. I know you're likely not a big fan of firearms, but it's worth noticing the early M-16s issued to Soldiers and Marines in the Vietnam War also had a parkerized finish so in a way they matched the watches that many of them wore in the field. I'm a history buff so I can't help but notice things like that.
As soon as you said "Smiths" my memory was peaked. About once a week I drive around my MG MGB, the speedometer is the exact one you showed in the video. I couldn't remember exactly why "Smiths" stuck out in my head but when I saw that Speedo I knew immediately. I always wondered why it said Smiths but never took the time to find out. I feel like a missing puzzle piece of my brain was just put where it belongs haha
TVG really shines here . Really appreciate the knowledge shared with many up and coming young collectors . You don't need a Rolex to have an interesting collection. Look at Nivada Grenchen and the history behind the Antarctic models .
5 Very cool and stunning piece you got there my friend, I'm in to hunt my self, I purchased few Gruen Curvex very affordable very decor,I also purchased a 1940 Harvel 7J very unique piece and fun if I want to share some of this pieces where should I send them to you, I know some of the history, but if you get chance to look at them, maybe you can find little bit more, let me know. THANK YOU MY FRIEND WOAH FACTOR..
The Bulova is stunning, I have been looking for a art deco tank watch and the bulova's look like great value for money. So underrated. Awesome video as always TGV thanks👍
I picked up a Sellita 34 mm hand wind in incredible condition from a auction site via Goodwill... the patina is beautiful (Instagram @nashvillewatch)... Also just got a 16mm lug width Bund Strap for it Friday and LOVE it!!!! Great video as always... Do you know any info on Sellita heritage in watch making (other than movements)? What era they made watches?!? Please advise if you or anyone do...
Smiths Astral is a good buy, check the setting lever works spot-on, they are prone to breaking or slipping out of situ. Other overlooked British watches include Accurist 21 jewel ETA, Old England ETA (part of Accurist late 60s) Garrard long service watches - often 9ct cases - and Le Cheminant, which also used bought in ETA movements. Cheap Swiss classic? Bought a non running Regency ETA last month on ebay, serviced it, new crystal & strap - total cost £12.
There’s a Waltham I’ve had my eye on for awhile now, that being the Waltham B-383 automatic day-date. It has a space age look about it, with a 50/50 Orange & Black bezel, a silver watch face with blue and orange, and numeric pips for every 10 secs or mins. As of this comment, I noticed the watch has doubled in price since I last saw it. And I’ve only ever seen Two on the market at a time (the market being ebay). Perhaps I’ll save for it, though considering the rarity of the piece I may just have to pass.
TGV, I recently found a 1969 Benrus Blue Dial Chronograph Swiss Valjoux 7733 in a thrift store and purchased it for $2.00. Of course its not in working order and it needs a bit of cleaning. I'm considering having it repaired. What are your thoughts? Do you think that it is worth it?
Oh my my! In the US of A, Bulova is pronounced BUL-o-va, not bul-OH-va. Love your vids, keep up the good work. Please do a vid sometime on Elgin and Lord Elgin watches, they're kind of fascinating (could be the next sought after vintage thing).
Late to the party here. Just picked up a Smiths Astral centre second version of your watch from 1965. Mine has been well "loved" but serviced and keeps excellent time. I paid very little for it and due to it's "loved" state, can be worn with impunity... classier than all the multi thousand £ or $ watches in the pawn brokers.
TGV, just saw the excellent movie "1917". Both main characters had watches though impossible to see what they were. What do you think the Brit boys would have worn in WWI? LOVE the channel, inspired me to start collecting. Cheers - Ed
Hi Tristano, I think Art Deco watches are the most beautiful watches ever. Also interesting are Art Deco Rolex watches. They are already available for little money. But the most beautiful art deco clocks are from bulova, at least to my taste. Two watch brands are very undervalued in vintage watches in my opinion: Eterna and Enicar. Anything not called Kon Tiki or Sherpa seems to be ignored. I think that's a pity. Also, the French brand Yema seems to me to be significantly undervalued. Although this brand was created only in 1948, it has some excellent vintage watches on offer. greetings René
Well done and again you've taught me some history about the US Military I didn't know .... Benrus field watches! Funny thing is, I'm the guy who spent +20 years in the US Military. lol! Thanks!
Hey TGV not really realted but just had a question in regards a watches I have been looking at. Its the Revue Thommen Air Speed XL, 16071.6874. I liked it because its similar to the Breitling Avenger and same valjoux, but more in my price range. I am not familiar with the company other then i know they make aircraft parts and watches since the 1800s but am i going to regret the purchase. they don't seem to have a main site so not sure who would service if needed or i could just take to anyone that has valjoux watches. Thanks and love the channel.
Loved the intro! There are a lot of watch snobs on RU-vid, for sure. Some even describe horologically important brands like Longines and Breitling as dog sh*t watches (mentioning no names... cough..AL.. cough). I really have to question if they know anything about watches. On the other hand (no pun intended) your knowledge and enthusiasm never fails to impress me, and like many other people, you were instrumental in inspiring me to collect watches in a (very) modest way. Just one other thing: I have a watch that hasn't ticked for years. May I also describe that as "timeless"?
A sweet spot ….I remember as a child my first watch was a ..Unicorn Automatic, and a hand wind Unicorn Incabloc. These watches and your passion have ignited and jogged my memory of the watches I’ve had….the Omega Railmaster , has an interest for me also, as my great grand father worked as a Railway employee, who I am researching. The Omega Railmaster is still on my shopping list.
Benrus was my great grandfathers company - (Benjamin Lazrus) - thanks for showing off his watch.- the company BENRUS today is completely new owners with no connection to our family. Just someone trying to revamp the name.
I'll have to get my hands on a Benrus. Bullitt is one of my fav McQueen flicks and it would be cool to have a bit of history for around $200.00. I have a Vaer C4 that has a similar (but bigger 40mm) case to that 3065
Jack from London UK, nice collection there, I have a Bulova in my collection, not clued up on the others, be nice if you could do a video on the Swiss Consul brand, having one in my collection. Best regards from a sunny London uk 🇬🇧
The Hamilton Worldtime Power looks so vintage I love it. Anymore vintage reccomendatiobs similar to it. I want something resembling a WW2 type of watch. Old leather strap I guess. Idrk 😂
I recently bought a watch because it had a valjoux 7750 for £250, which seemed to greater bargain to pass up. It is from a brand called Philip Watch, the model is called the Tales 50, I've found out a bit about the brand, but would love to know more
OMG! TGV you bought that Hamilton 8984! I love that piece, it's my only world time watch! I've been trying to get someone to polish out the scratches on my case. Could you please share where you managed to get yours serviced?
Hi urban gentry I’m from Australia I was just wondering on what your thoughts are on the app, Chrono24 as I am starting my vintage watch collection I have an eberhard and co from around the 1960s which was my dad’s uncles. Was wondering on what browsers/sites or apps you use to hunt down vintage time pieces! Cheers mate
I just bought the same Smiths Astral, love a bit of British watchmaking! Wanted an Omega for the history but I do not like any of the modern items. The nice vintage is too expensive for me to justify because I mostly wear tool pieces. Anyway I love the idea of this - I have 7.5 inch wrists so this one might go with the woman, I'll have to get her a nice strap! Thanks for the tip!
My grandfather passed on a beautiful Bulova like the one you showed here. Lots of engraving in the gold however and some jewels at the 9, 12 and 3. Maybe someone from the community can appraise its quality for me.
I picked up a beat-up Gruen Precision for 35 bucks not too long ago. It still keeps good time. The case has corrosion, and the dial shows some signs of age, but It's a gorgeous old watch that I'm not afraid to wear. ...and wear it I do! I'm an usher in a large art-deco theater, and it fits so perfectly with their uniform! The old lume is utterly useless in the dark theater, but in that particular role, I'm never without a flashlight, so it's not the end of the world. I have it on a brown crocodile strap. Mmm! I love it so much!
Wow - Great Video! 5 awesome pieces My favorite is the Bulova, because I am a sucker for the Reverso and this looks like the same feeling without being a hommage - like you said!
keep it positive, keep it gentry, onwards and upwards... or YOU will be blocked ! In fact you are going to have to work pretty hard and say some nice things to not be blocked 😂
