5 Tennis Hacks To INSTANTLY Improve Your Game
I don’t like videos with titles like this as they often promise something unatainable, but these 5 tips are VERY easy to try and can make an INSTANT improvement to your game.
Which are you going to try first? And do you have any others to add??

A good and instant hack would be to bring up the intensity of your footwork - bend those knees, drive through the ball and remain stable throughout and your level will increase dramatically! The main difference you see between amateur and pro play lies precisely in the footwork

Love the grip chocking on volleys. I’m a decent net player but sometimes trying to do too much. This helps just concentrating on driving the ball in the direction you want. Less cute but more effective under pressure. Thanks mentor!

I will try the volley hack tomorrow! What helps me a lot on groundstrokes is telling myself to always hit the ball at waist level. It might not be possible all the time but it gives me a spatial reference to use my footwork effectively and cut down on errors vs hitting a ball too high or too close to my body because I want to hit it earlier
@TheTennisMentor
@TheTennisMentor 7 месяцев назад
Let me know how your volleys go. I like your mindset of hitting at waist height, it forces you to be more alert with your ball reading and movement.

Great hacks! The breathing/grunting hack is the one that helps me most, for relaxed power and intensity. Another hack a coach told me was to always aim for something specific in every shot, rather than just a random shot, such as where you want the ball you hit to land. Then see how close to your intention your execution was, and learn from that.

Good to hear about breathing out when hitting the ball. I found I am doing it with longer rallies but I’m careful no one is too close to hear as it may sound pretentious. 😊I thought it was more for focusing than relaxing muscles though recently especially when serving I am trying to full relax before starting the movement. I will try the no-spin hack since tossing is really hard for me. I will also try the higher grip during volley, see how it feels.

The volley hack is new to me and, as I'm playing doubles, I'm totally going to try it right away. The breathing out one is also very good, didn't think about it but it makes a lot of sense and I'm trying it also. For the return of serve I do something different: as I'm learning 2hbh, I keep the hands ready for it when returning first serves, so that if it's on my FH I hit it with a continental (with a more closed FH grip I tend to send the ball to the net); when returning 2nd serves I instead keep my semiwestern FH grip, as most of the times it's slow enaough that, if it's on my BH side, I can run around it. Makes sense?

The best hack that was new to me is choking up on the grip when volleying. I play with an Ezone 98 which at times I find unstable at the net but this hack made so much sense and it worked. I was thinking about adding weight at 3-9 to increase the stability but I feel I rather experiment with this more. Thanks!!!

Many thanks, I'd do for sure the easiest, the last one regarding the grip...Personally I see the most difficult for me is the one about the volley. Not so easy for an old guy like me to chage his bad habit and honestly, I'm quite happy about my volley. Then I'll focus on the others hack which I'm partially already doing, but I'll practice more these to make them more consistant in my tennis

the volley tip, I've never heard anyone talked about!!! im gonna give it a try. As for the no spin toss, how do we achieve it? Thank you!
@TheTennisMentor
@TheTennisMentor 6 месяцев назад
I hope it helps! The idea of the no spin toss is to remove unnecessary technical information by experimenting and finding a way (so if I tell you how it would defeat the object). But, as you asked so nicely I’ll give you one word… ‘push’ (or place) the ball rather than toss.

I choked up on my volleys about a year ago to the extent that I placed my index finger through the racket throat. I had INSTANT improvement. The lack of reach mentioned is more than compensated for by touch. I will never go back. An aside: the closer your hand is to the business end of your tool, the greater control you have over it.

When returning against someone with a good serve I always do the opposite of hack 1: be ready in a backhand position. I feel as I am able to hit a decent forehand return with a not perfect semi western grip. But when I slightly over or under rotate by quickly switching from a forehand to one-handed backhand grip the return gets much worse.
@TheTennisMentor
@TheTennisMentor 7 месяцев назад
Definitely a great point if you’re a one hander and they’re targeting your BH. The key is using that off hand to switch
@tomsd8656
@tomsd8656 7 месяцев назад
For me, the key when returning serve is to identify which side, forehand or BH, very early, so I can meet the ball in front. I didn't even think of grip change. That's automatic. But if I meet the ball just a bit late, then that's a guaranteed error or a bad return.
@bharadwajrcr6356
@bharadwajrcr6356 7 месяцев назад
@@tomsd8656 True .. Same here. That might be because we use same grip or slight variation for FH and BH. I hit both the shots from the same side of the racket.

I think there's an even easier way to change grip as a one-handed backhand player: Don't. Hard to explain in text, but basically hit with the opposite racquet face than you normally would and then the grip stays the same (or changes much less atleast, depending on exact choice of fh/bh grip). Another way to explain: If I have the racquet in fh position with semi-western grip and then make a windshield-wiper motion to my backhand side the racquet is in the right place and right grip without any grip change. Of course my actual motion is much faster/compact than a windshield-wiper motion but you get the idea. Third way to explain: When returning I have my racquet in front of me with a semi-western forehand grip, with the wrist already cocked a bit so the strings are facing my opponent. I then just start my backswing, and regardless if I'm hitting forehand or backhand the strings facing the opponent at the start are the same hitting the ball. To me it never made sense why you would make a grip change that's 180 degrees, or close to it, when you could just twist the hand (like you do anyway). I've watched tennis for 20 years, played for 3, coached 1 year and didn't know some players move the hand up a bit on volley. Cool tip. As for ball tosses, I struggled a bit, but found it easier when I switched to the "holding a glass" grip of the ball while tossing. Became much more consistent, but still not perfect. Will try the "no spin" thing too :)

I think once some adults reach the level of around 9 utr, it can be very hard to improve. This has happened to me. Although you may be improving aspects of your game, the results in tournaments remain the same. For me, it’s because I developed bad habits as a child that are engrained into my muscle memory (western grip, short takeback on forehand). I don’t go to the net much because here in Florida with the level of players, if you try to go to the net without hitting an outstanding approach, you will not even get a chance to volley.
