Five years later and this is still relevant. Thanks for the calm demonstration in a time of panic when I couldn't get the disk to open inside. It had just come off the pin. Being able to remove the mechanism made the fix easy. Great job!

This is the best instructional video EVER. Watching this I learnt how to get inside the cassette and refit the latch opener which had come loose. Toilet now working perfect. The flush tank tip excellent - I got another circa 7 litres in following your advise. THANKS

Hi graham, just watched your vid' on servicing/cleaning the thetford loo, i also didnt know you can gain access to the inside of the cassette for cleaning, ive just cleaned mine(with latex gloves on!) absolutely spotless now & lightly rubbed a tiny amount of olive oil over the seal once cleaned, i notice the open/shut valve working smoother now too. as someone commented on refraining to shake the cassette incase of damaging the plastic float inside- easy solution just leave the top off thats connected to the float while GENTLY shaking the cassette to swill the hot soapy water about, just be careful not to splash any in your face!! Thank you again for video.

Funny seeing you clean this holdingtank. I work for thetford, and the c402 model is the one i usually make every day. But using olive oil is not recommended, look in a hardwarestore at the plumbing department for waterproof lubricant, it will last longer and keep the seal in better shape!

Very helpful vid, thanks 👍 I watched this before tackling the cassette in our new (to us) 2017 ‘van. The only thing I would add, apologies if you covered this in the speeded up segment, but I would also pop off the seal around the top lid and give the seal and that area a good clean. Our dealer had cleaned and prepped the toilet and cassette before collection but there were still signs of ‘combat action’ under that seal. And I know it wasn’t us as we’ve only been away in the van twice and have a house rule ‘number twos? Site loos!’ 😁

Thanks Graham. I can tell you that the reason the toilet compartments can be locked is because the holiding tanks are very expensive to replace. Mine was stolen and it was £450 to replace it. You also find out its been stolen at the worst possible moment!. Also I found out the hard way that the cassette compartments are not sealed from the caravan when I washed out my new (to me) caravans toilet compartment and had a very wet bathroom floor!

If you look on the floor where the cassette goes there are two flaps that come out with a little well in them if you have an odour that is probably where it’s coming from they get water in them if you have a overflow or spill

Thanks. You put a lot of effort into producing this video. However you missed a part that I was after. When you said there is no other serviceable parts, there is a rocker valve under a flat rectangular cover on the mid rear of the top. This covers a valve that is actuated by a tube that slides up inside another tube from under the bottom of the cassette. This valve is actuated when the cassette slides into the van. These parts also need cleaning but I have not found a way to get the valve out. The cover to this mechanism can be prised off with a Stanley knife and a screwdriver.

Hello, what are the two white tabs under the Cassette at the 11 min mark? Are they storage sections? They look like they are flaps that lift up.

I vaguely remember an old Practical Caravan (I think) video warning against vigorous sloshing around - apparently the float switch (which indicates when the cassette needs emptying) is a sensitive beast and prefers more gentle treatment!

Who knew the cassette comes apart like that. I wonder if our C250 does the same ? Cracking video !

Is your tank considered Left hand or right hand? I'm not sure what they even mean by these terms.

Can't the nozzle be unmounted (and the seal oiled, too)? Nice video, esp. the camera inside and the "open the lid trick". Helps a lot, maybe I can repair mine by diy. Thanks!

I have not long ago got a motor home, It was standing for a while, I use the thetford pink & blue, When I flush i get black bits in the flush water, more so when i have just filled the flush tank, Do you know what to put in the tank to clean the black bits out, I do not want to use strong stuff as this may damage the seal of the thetford cassette, I had the same with the on board waste tank, but was able to clean that with cleaning fluids down the drains on the van, Any thought's ? I would have worn latex gloves

I think the "R" on the model number must indicate right or left hand on the waste tank. In fact it makes no difference - a left hand version is interchangeable with a right hand version by re-fitting the top assembley accordingly. This was confirmed by a phone call to Thetford. Why did you not wear protective gloves?

Be careful about shaking the cassette too hard, because you can damage the sensor which tells you it's full (lights up the light near the flush handle).

Should never shake the cassette too vigorously as it has the level indicator inside which can easily come dislodged. Our Thetford is a slightly different model and has retaining screws to gain access.

What is the purpose of the ball cock, is it supposed to stop the toilet opening if the cassette is full. I can’t see how this is possible? I wonder if mine is missing something. Thanks

Caravan Toilet Operation

Grease made for this toilet much better than olive oil.... old won;t last long.

Don't put the blue chemicals down the loo. Only into chemical toilet disposal point. Your local treatment plant will not be pleased, or your septic tanks bacterial system will not work.

Utterly pointless to clean the inside of a sewage container that will be just as dirty after next use 🙈 Rinse it with water, add toilet cassette cleaner to the water if necessary. The seal can be serviced as normal

Wear some gloves.
