5 Things I Had to Give Up to Grow My Career

The more I grow, the more I realize that people who get to the next level are the ones who say "no" more than they say "yes".
I used to be really bad at this. In many ways, I still am.

1. Other people's judgement - Care about what people think and you will always be their prisoner. 2. Information overload - People today are in danger of drowning in information but because they have been taught that information is useful, they are more willing to drown than they need be. 3. What I thought 'I' should become. 4. My own judgement of other people - It is humbling to become the very thing you once mocked. 5. My desire to be perfect - The pursuit of perfection is a disguise for insecurity.

About saying yes all the time. There is a time and a place to work all night, if you want to move up. I’ve put in more 80 hour weeks than I can imagine, and today I’m considered an expert in my field. Having reached that goal, I no longer need to do it all the time. So today, this is how I have learned to handle it with my boss. “I can do X, but I’m going to have to re-prioritize. Compared to Y, what do you think is more important? (insert my recommendation and why).” I’ve also learned to use the “Scotty school of engineering” (Star Trek reference). approach to timelines. Buffer everything. If you do this, you always look like you are overachieving, even when you took an extended lunch ;)

Very interesting but in my opinion being perfectionist is more a matter of willing to provide the best quality possible by overcoming laziness. When I'm working on a project I prefer spending as much time as required in order to have the best results that satisfies me instead of choosing the easy path of doing things fast and not that good. You can be a perfectionist and still love making mistakes, in music for example, mistakes are most of the time the best things that can ever happen to you :)

I agree, stumbling on a strange note allows for new bridge breaking out of the usual patterns. I think that's a huge part of stress in today's culture is that all art, cinema, music, graphic has become very stagnant.

Thats absolutely true. I am developing an app, and it is easily done on a gui, but I wanted a web-based demo for the stakeholders, and I had to pose the development and learn to master Web MVC and related frameworks and even worse we are not using a JS framework to persist data at the back-end. Moral of the story, to be extremely good at something you need to revert to first principles, and they allow you to execute high-quality content, though it takes a little while.

The thing that hit me the hardest: traveling the world vs getting deep into one culture. Is it worth going around the world and getting tons of superficial relationships, or is it better to choose a few cultures that you really like and get to know everything?

Perfection should be the decision that your efforts are satisfactorily complete and accomplishment is taken walking away from a task.
@Xdiego587

I'm being honest. The perfectionist fact really got me. When I take a look on people I have as "idols", the only thing which seperates us is only consistency. They're not working towards perfection they are just trying to get to know the essentials, in short they're curious. And nothing more. Consistency (with Discipline) + Curiousity is the most healthy combination for growing in my eyes, enlighten me if I'm wrong.

1 point of confusion: he says, options are the silent killer, but then later, those who win are those who can adjust. Very similar.... keeping options open, and being able to adjust.

This video feels very insightful, and it has some new unexplored ideas. I don't remember ever being told to limit my options. The video and audio are clear and I like the visual animation. However, I feel like you could have personalized the content of this video and deepened it a bit more. Although I get the simple message to "limit my options" I do not however feel like I understood much when you dove deeper into the 5 things you had to give up. What brought you to give up other's judgement and judging them? What difference have you realized since then? And what reason do you think giving up these things resulted in these differences? Yes, you said "When the brain is too crowded it doesn't operate at it's best" but I think that would've been better if perhaps you dove deeper into how distractions on the media affect the brain, etc. Same for all the other 4 things mentioned. However I still say your video was insightful and I support the effort you put into this.

I recently had an 'enlightenment'. I am also living in Seoul and I had been around here and Taiwan for the last 10 years. Giving away my time on drinking, language exchange, and privates. I hear you mention them in your video and it seems you hit the stage I'm at now before you took off like a rocket. Great job! Are you originally from Britain? Married? Living in Seoul? I ask about the married because now that I had the enlightenment, I have cut social ties about 90%. I'm curious as to whether or not you can balance both! Nice job bro.

I agree with this but have to digress on the matter of caring what others think. Others have to think we'll of you for your business to grow. If they don't you going no where. Others have to think we'll of the people they see me.with for my business to grow. If I'm seen with a crack head it's gonna put a dent on my reputation and could damage my career. So it's cool not to let people's opinions bother you but on the other hand peoples opinion can make or break you.

I don't agree with the fact that high standards are a disguise for insecurities. Well, me and I guess many others, like Ed Mylett who said : “my reasons are bigger (than others) and so my standards are higher.” ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-na7RfQ5NBC8.html If you don’t have true high standards, it’s because you still haven’t found compelling reasons to have them.

MGTOW my friends, MGTOW. Disregard females, acquire salvation. 1 Corinthians 7:7 For I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that. 7:8 I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I. Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
