my work may get really good reactions at first glance and people have offerd top end dollar, higher then expected but not many follow through. Few people can afford that kind of extra hours for the same function as a quickly done item. This video definitely made me rethink my want for creating then uncreatable heh.

Great advise. Not sure why nobody commented on this. Best advise is to under promise and over deliver. An average quality worker can still make tons of great ratings given the level of expectation set.

6:39 I painted or varnished A LOT of interiors as a carpenter/remodeler. Why? Because I could control the end results- I could do two things by painting and finishing my own work: 1) if I did an excellent fit and finish and the painter doesn’t have an impeccable quality that day (or worse- the homeowner paints it!!) the finish obscures my good work. Good paint isn’t noticeable in specifics, but the “wow!” factor is both an emotional response (good) and an intellectual response (customer is proud of what he or she got for their money); and 2) if a few things aren’t exactly “right” - and the bigger the project the more likely you will find you had an ‘oops’ or several- a good painter (you) can recover that with some attention. But even good painters care more about themselves than they do your work whereas you care deeply about the final impressions. And you can control that result and eliminate the “why didn’t my painter fix that?!!” by finishing your work yourself.
Tool brands DO matter. In the beginning I didn't have much money so I bought cheap tools like 50 euros for a hand drill machine or 60 euros for a multitool and such things. Once I had a very cheap sanding tool with a triangular sandpad on it. That one worked for exactly 2 seconds after using it for the first time (just plug it into a wall outlet, hold it above the workpiece and press the button to see if it worked). After that, the rpm dropped from 1500rpm or so to about 100rpm and it was useless. I could sand faster with my bare hands compared to the speed of that tool after it broke. Another grinding machine of 600 Watts and a 2mm thick grinding disc on it, used for cutting steel, took one hour to cut 4 pieces of metal that were 4cm long and 4mm thick. As soon as the disc hit the metal, it slowed down to a halt, even without using much pressure of the tool. It was like having a grinder with a lego motor on it, it had absolutely no power at all. After searching between my tools, I found a grinder of Bosch and that one took only a few minutes with the same disc to cut those 4 pieces. That Bosch grinder still works today after 10 years. Another jigsaw broke after using it for 5 minutes. The blade was held inside the tool with a 2mm thick aluminum plate, 3mm wide and 10mm long and it used 2 screws 2mm thick to hold that blade. After trying to cut 1 wooden board of 2cm thick, that aluminum plate broke in half and I couldn't insert any other blade ever again. Now I have a Bosch jigsaw and it still works after 6-7 years and I press much harder compared to that jigsaw that broke after 5 mins. At least 3 cheap brand tools broke on me after the first few minutes of using them. Those cheap brands were like PowerTools, PowerPlus, TopCraft and such brands. Since then, I only buy Bosch, Makita, Hitachi, Black&Decker and those tools still live after 20 years and have had a rougher time than those cheap tools that broke within minutes. I have 1 handheld drilling machine from Black&Decker and is 24 years old and still works flawlessly. No cheap tools for me again. For me, those are only good to buy and put them on display inside a dustfree cabinet or use em to cut paper but nothing more. Of course, the most expensive tools (+500 euros per tool or such figures) are a waste of money if you're starting out and you'll do fine with some cheaper tools like Bosch or Black&Decker (pricerange between 100 and 200 euros). Just don't buy brands from Aldi (like TopCraft or Duro, prices around 40-60 euros), those machines are way too cheap to do anything decent, if they work at all after using them for an hour.
In correct my friend I have dewalt as well as think and also Parkside I have had my Parkside for years with constant use. For less than 3\4 of the cost don't knock the cheaper brands and don't even think of buying festool
Lol. Festool tools have their place. But they are not a requirement at all. I have many Festool tools. But often people buy Festool because they think they are required for making the best product... Not the case at all. But some Festool products like an MFT, Domino, or their sanders are truly in a class of their own. But they are not required at all to do beautiful work. They just make the work a little bit faster and easier.
In regards tool brands you can also purchase corded versions of name brand for the similar price as a cheaper cordless brand you just have to deal with inconvenience of a cord. I recommend doing this for heavy used tools until you can upgrade because you can always use the extra power that cheaper brands might not provide.
I'm a full time sushi chef and and thank you for honesty and time. I just picked up a impact driver and drill combo set and looking forward to building random diy stuff, mainly because one of my random dreams is to be a stay at home dad with his own wood working business. Keep in mind I have no knowledge of wood working but wth let's try it. I'm 28 with 3 kids and a shit job let's do work man
I am so glad to hear that! Running a business is a very difficult task with many unexpected turns. But it's incredibly rewarding if you can tackle them appropriately.
I like how you talk about setting clients expectations. They should know that this is wood we are talking about, there are going to be minor imperfections. There has been a cycle where clients expect the best and business promise the best then clients expect that because it was advertised. Business then have to one up that to get more business, then they promises more and more until they are promising perfection and their clients expect that too. It's a bad cycle and we are all so deep into it.

Well done. I started a couple months ago making keepsake boxes. So far, they look like they're put together by a 3rd grader, but I customize all of them with wood-burning, watercolors, and acrylics. Any and all info I can get on this stuff is always helpful. New subber here.
There's a set of guidelines that I use in my painting business that you can find online, not going to say the company, not affiliated lol, but it's an association of people in the finishing trades. These guidelines make it possible to dispute a client who might have unreasonable expectations. For instance, a painted level 4 wall has to appear flawless from 6 ft away with a 60 watt light... So nitpicking Nancy who sees an off shade pinpoint on the wall can't refuse to pay you. Hope it helps!

I typically don't view these kinds of vids, because I just don't want to sit around listening to some guy gibber-jabber. But I am impressed with your presentation. Valuable, to the point, with reasonable info, but not bla bla bla. Again. Thank you. On another note you have really encouraged me. I have great customer service skills, and just about everything you mentioned is common sense for me personally. One of my short-comings is speed and efficiency. I'll have to work that out somehow. Ah! Yes. That makes sense. Speed and efficiency is something that you never really stop working on in a production environment. But it is secondary to doing a great job. So it's OK if it takes you some time. You just gotta find a "system" that allows you to slowly pick up speed as you do repeat processes. Every time I do something for the first time I am really really slow... Cause I wanna do it right. If I have a job where I know I will likely never do something like it again, then I'll need to charge more money because I know I will be slow. For example I got hired to completely rebuilt a 1931 Chevy Woody car... Likely never gonna do another one. So I gotta charge more money to make it worth my time, and if the client doesn't like my bid then it's OK to let it go. But cabinets or cutting boards or refinishing are things I've done over and over again and I can do them pretty fast. I can charge a little less for those cause I know I can do them fast now. I don't need to charge less money for them... But I can if I want to. Usually I don't. Speed is usually the last piece of the puzzle to come together. It's OK to jump in head first and be slow and then work on your speed over the years as long as you are intentional about improving.

I have a 2 car garage which I share with my neighbor. I have his keys, pull out his car, then roll my bench and tools out, use, clean, roll back and repark his car in his space at end of the day. It's a lot. But I am grateful. San Francisco has very little space for Woodworking, so what I do have is a blessing.

Great video bro. Totally right I have had my own glass bus for 11 years. Started it with about $750. I had not tools and joe have a bunch. I end up buying Ryobi more time than not. The wood or job don’t care what bran cuts them. I’m my experience if your the main user and take care of them they’ll be just fine. I like Ryobi because I can get more tool for the same money, which leads to the right tools for right job. I have been blessed and take care of my customers while valuing my time.

I’m on a 5yr plan to cutback my work in Aged Care and start my Upcyling/woodwork/DIY business - I’m a sponge at the moment - taking in all advice and lessons learnt from those already in the business. Nice! You can get a lot done in 5 years with the right plan and work ethic. I hear you. There's some parts of running my own business that are very stressful and tiring like designing, installs, and taxes. But they aren't what I do the majority of the time. Because I love woodwork, when I have to work long days (12 hours or more) I end the day not feeling exhausted and hating my life lol. I actually feel like I still have some energy and my mind still feels sharp. And it's encouraging to know that the sky is the limit as my own boss. I have a number of Ryobi tools...because they are inexpensive. Not the best tools, but they are improving. I recently bought an impact drill as I refinish my basement and I've been impressed by the quality improvement in Ryobi so far.

You should make a video on finishing or basics in finishing. New to kitchen cabinets and learning as I go. I'm not a business yet because I want to learn more and from my experience. I can make the nicest piece of work but if the finish is not done right all the work I put in goes down the drain. Thanks for tips as well

DeWalt makes good tools. I wouldnt say they definitively surpass Milwaukee tho. They both have their specific tools that i think are a little better than the other. They are both great brands tho
I had a really nice milwaukee drill, hard case, extra battery everything. I also had a dewalt kit with an impact driver, and drill/hammer drill combo, in a soft bag. My truck got broken into a few years back. I have to say my dewalts have far surpassed my milwaukee drill. Still use my dewalts to this day. Something about that ugly yellow bag makes people not want to steal it.
Great Video! I am starting to getting into wood working and beginning my equipment list.I totally agree about not going overboard. A lot of things can be built with a circular saw, driver and a doweling jig. I think I am breaking that rule on one thing and that is a table saw. Since I am an musician and software engineer, I can't risk having an accident so I am going to get a SawStop Jobsite Saw. It is 1000 bucks more than the entry levels but to me that is worth it since an accident can destroy two careers in one go.
Nice video! Keep up the good work! In my opinion it's quite hard to grow and get successful but grow slow and steady. I had a full-time job I got myself my main income from when growing, that would be my advise to new woodworkers!

Im glad i can help! for cabinetry i do a "linear foot pricing" model and then make adjustments from there, but for custom work i basically just guestimate how long it will take me, then add 20% and times that by my hourly rate, which is $80. $80 an hour isnt cheap so to charge that much you really gotta have a good reputation and move quickly in your shop.
Good video. From good enough to perfect is usually pretty long way time wise and is customer willing to pay say 25% extra that youve spent on that if he is happy with good enough
Well painting isn't that bad if it's going smoothly. I actually enjoy it as long as there's no issues... But fixing painting mistakes or trying to improve your skills as a painter really suck. Even masking off cabinets or jobsites to eliminate overspray is a nightmare. Takes forever. But if you have a system that works really well for you that gives very consistent and quality results without a bunch of complications, then it's really not that bad.... But it's taken years of practice for it to even be semj enjoyable for me.
