You may already know this, carry an extra set of wheel bearings with all the mileage you put on your trailer, it can happen and being out in the middle of nowhere having those bearings will save you also I carry a small cordless grease gun for my wheel bearings and a small inexpensive torque wrench to torque the wheels properly, also it helps me a lot since I am off roading most of the time is the dust, so before opening my rear kitchen or my side doors I carry a small portable blower that’s cordless and uses the same battery as the grease gun and I blow off the trailer this way when I open the door no dust gets in and I carry that in my tongue box really helps a lot.
@adventuredawgs
@adventuredawgs 8 месяцев назад
I actually hadn't thought to bring replacement bearings and grease gun with me. I'm always worried about a flat tire. Have you had bearings go while out camping? And the blower is a great idea! That fine road dust gets EVERYWHERE no matter how tightly everything is sealed up.
@FieldWorxoverlandadventures
@FieldWorxoverlandadventures 8 месяцев назад
@@adventuredawgs yes I’ve had bearings go out on me and fortunately I have them I just pulled the wheel off I always carry extra tools popped in the new bearings and I was good to go, I don’t know if your axle has a rubber cover on the end if it does pull off the rubber cover put the grease gun on the nipple and pump the grease in and I pretty much do it on every trip most of my trips are over 300 miles round-trip so you can’t go wrong by squirting just a little bit of grease in there.

I used to haul a 2000 lb tent trailer with a Nissan pickup that had a 4 cylinder engine. It struggled on hills, but other than that it got the job done. In retrospect a lttle more power would have been great, but I definitely should have had electric brakes. Towing the trailer noticably increased my stopping distance and I got a bit stressed a few times when someone passed me and slowed down quickly. In 2018 I purchased a new F150 and an 18 ft travel trailer. The trailer had electric brakes and the truck had an electronic brake controller. After adjusting the sensitivity of the brake controller my stopping distance when towing was essentially the same as when I wasn't towing anything at all. I sold my truck and trailer, but if I decided to buy another trailer I would go with a small teardrop that could be hauled with an suv. My 18 foot travel trailer had many creature comforts, but there were some downsides as well. It was awkward to get the trailer backed into tight spots and a lot of my comforts were unavailable to me if I didn't have a fully serviced site. Also, I had to store the trailer outside, which wasn't my first choice. After a while I came to realize that what I basically needed was a good comfortable bed and enough storage for the essentials. I typically stay at campgrounds that have shower and washroom facilities, so I sleep in my SUV using a bed platform and I cook with my Jackery or a butane stove. I don't cook a lot as I eat at restaurants while I'm out during the day. This simple solution seems to work best for my wife and I. Thank you for the video and safe travels!
@adventuredawgs
@adventuredawgs 3 месяца назад
I know EXACTLY what you mean about stress when you have to brake suddenly when you're pulling a trailer. I've had a few moments of choice language when someone cuts in front of me and then decides to slow down. I think you're onto something sleeping in the SUV. It must be so much easier to just park and be done. If it wasn't for the dogs, I'd have probably gone with something similar. AS much as I like the idea of a bigger trailer, ithe one I have works great for me right now. Thank you for joining the community. Take care and safe travels!

Why do dogs always wait until 1 point in their day, where they spend 5 minutes to drink 3 gallons all at one sitting? 😂.

@harriettanthony7352

Its clever and all and rah rah, but, for this writer I LIKE indoor plumbing and showers! Ditto, the fact that I do not want to crawl around like a slug. And last, the stern kitchen is all fine and dandy in 'the warm Californian sun" {insert muscik here} but what do you do in a monsoon, or a blizzard, or a hurricane. Nope, on the RARE occasion I go camping, I take a military surplus large tent; add some 'amenities' to it, and sleep like a human being. When I am done, fold it up, stow it and done. No extra $ to make it legal, no extra wear and tear on the tow vehicle and more. Even better, Motel 3.5 makes a lot of sense; cost of trailer & misc vs hotel fees
@adventuredawgs
@adventuredawgs 6 месяцев назад
I totally get where you’re coming from. There is no one size fits all to anything and that includes camping and travelling. For me, the convenience of parking and sleeping far outweighs the set up and take down of tents in the rain (which seems to always be my luck). Not to mention that the trailer has almost paid for itself with the savings that come from not having to spend money on hotels/motels. Those pet fees add up like nobody’s business. But I will say that in the case of cooking in extreme weather, a tent isn’t going to cut it in a monsoon, blizzard, or hurricane either. But then again, neither would I. That’s a perfect time to find a local restaurant 😁
