My one piece of advice is spend time working with vets before even thinking about applying to schools. I took a gap year between undergraduate school and vet school and it was the smartest thing I ever did. I worked in a large small animal clinic where I got a lot of practice drawing blood, placing catheters etc . Vet students don’t get as much practical experience as you might think. I also volunteered for stirrer stints with vets at the track , mixed animal practice (they eventually paid me) and a sport horse equine practice. Because of all the factors this gal mentioned you want to be sure you know what you’re getting into . It also gives you a framework which makes it easier to understand why you need to know all the stuff you study. I’ve been out of school 31 years and I would do it over in a heartbeat.

Hey! Super insightful video. I’m on my third certificate in veterinary nursing and have a guaranteed spot in my university after I finish this as well as a cert four in biology next year. I am really enjoying the theory in class, I find that of course we can’t touch onto everything we need as the certificate is on a low level but I’m trying to do my own personal study to gain a better understanding. But here’s where it gets kind of annoying. I’m doing work experience in a veterinary practice, I’ve done maybe around 23 hours so far and it’s just absolute hell. The vet nurses always make me constantly clean and restock things, which is understandable for some things, such as sanitation and restocking the equipment, but they give me the most pointless cleaning things to do around the clinic and it’s just putting a horrible impression on me of being a vet. I either sit around awkwardly or clean, I feel in the way whenever I’m around any of the vet nurses, the vets though I love what they’re doing and I’m so interested in it, I just hate what’s happening right now and I don’t know what to do I suppose. Sorry this has been kind of ranty. But yeah, I’m learning essentially nothing on the job other then vet specific things- like where certain things are in that one specific vet or whatever, total bs!! How do you get through this without wanting to literally kill yourself? Also you mentioned you were on last year of vet school. Have you had mental breakdowns? Has the content been too overwhelming? I’m nervous it will be too challenging for you I’m not sure. Regardless I’m just sick of being a janitor lmao, Thankyou for listening to my Ted talk.

Hey there, would you be going onto vet school next year? Sorry to hear that your placement is making you do a fair bit of cleaning, I do remember spending my first 2 years doing a lot of mucking out (cleaning stables, farm work, cleaning kennels and mopping floors) during pre-clinical placements. I think the idea is to try and be as helpful as possible to your team, earn their trust and befriend them (vet nurses are the coolest and you can learn so much from them!!) so that they are more likely to tell you when the cool stuff is coming in/ let you do some cool stuff. You might already have tried this, but I find that while cleaning, you could ask them if you're allowed to see a consult or op after finishing this task, or ask them if they have advice for you as a future vet, what they wish they'd known, (eg. best way to handle an aggressive cat etc or anything that you might find useful, then say like oh, could I try your method of handling said cat the next time something comes in.) I remember feeling bit upset during my 4th year, when the first task of my clinical placement was to clean the litter tray of the clinic cat when there were consults going on, but I just did what I was told, because I knew that the vets were kind enough to take me in, it's the least I could do to help them out. So I swallowed my pride and did the job, later in the day the vet told me I could do a castrate the next day (supervised ofc), and I was well excited, and learnt quite a bit on placement! The vet degree is hard, and there is a lot to learn! I've definitely had times where I had mini breakdowns, but thankful that I had friends and family there to pick me up. But a lot of things in life are hard no matter what you pursue, I guess you have to find what works for you, but also knowing when to take breaks when things get too overwhelming. But the cleaning never stops, dogs and cats empty their bowels whenever they please so vets and residents still help to clean kennels when there is a mess, everyone helps to make the shift run smoother and better, its team effort after all x) Hope this was somewhat helpful 🙈 and all the best ! xx

Ahh I know this wasn't aimed at me but just wanted to say I feel your pain!! I had the same experience as you going into my first clinical (assistant/nurse) job, it was honestly the most demotivating time ever. I felt like no one liked me and they were just picking on me and making my life hard by giving me the shit jobs and letting others come along for fun stuff constantly. However, it got better!! I went back to the same clinic for two more summers and found I got "upgraded" every year and there were new people who had to take on the cleaning duties. At least in the clinic I was in it seems it was a bit of a ritual to see whether you were willing to stick out the hard parts or not. So if you really want it, hang in there! And make a mental note of what never to be like once you are the vet in charge ;) Also there is nothing wrong with changing clinics, they're not all like that! My clinic improved from year to year, but I still always felt a bit hesitant of that place after my initial experiences. So now that I'm starting work as an actual vet I made sure to find a different clinic that I have *such* a good impression of and not burn myself out by spending more time in that place where I felt undervalued 😌 I hope things are looking better for you! 💗

Hey Daliah no worries at all :) I think maths is important because we use it during drug calculations and things, so it would be worth persevering! Always good to check your vet school's requirements to see if maths is a needed subject, all the best !!
@adrianashilling2573
@adrianashilling2573 2 года назад
I don’t think you need calculus but you use math every day in practice and it certainly helps if you have enough of a feel to know if the answer you get with a calculator is in the realm of the possible. Some familiarity with algebra is also good so you know how to set up your calculation. You need to figure drug doses, rates at which you drip fluids so you don’t shortchange or drown an animal etc. You also need to be comfortable with the metric system which actually makes WAY more sense than the inches and yards and ounces and pounds in common practice in the US. If you are having a hard time with math make sure it’s not because you have a poor teacher. My daughter was always good about asking a good teacher for help if she ended up with a bad teacher and IMO math is the subject where the teacher can make it easy or impossible. I was useless to my daughter because they have changed completely how they teach it (lord knows why because math hasn’t changed in millennia) so I could get the answers but not in the way that’s in vogue now.

hello! im a malaysian soon-to-be vet student (got my offer 4 days ago). for your spm subjects you must pass biology and chemistry with good credit (getting all A's will better your chances because most vet students in the uni i'll be in scored 8 A's and above). after getting your spm results you'll have to enter matriculation, i suggest you take asasi sains pertanian in upm as it will increase your chances of getting in. Make sure you get a cgpa of atleast 3.75 for your foundation/matriculation as it is the minimum cgpa to pass the requirements. after you fulfilled all the academic requirements you'll be called in for an interview, make sure to do LOTS of research regarding animals, upm's vet program and the biggest issues in vet before your interview. good luck and work hard!

I wish I knew that most people - teachers and students alike - are in it more for exploiting animals for money, not helping them. I wish I knew that a huge focus in vet school is wasted on food production. I wish I knew that vet school doesn't prepare you in the slightest for actually practicing vet medicine. I didn't study in the UK, but an Eastern European country, so I don't know how universal this is, but my expierience with vet school was pretty awful. I have the degree now, but that place made me lose all passion for veterinary medicine...

I’d say it’s important to understand drug reactions, how drugs are metabolised in the body (half life of a drug, what is a loading dose of a drug) so the concepts of chemistry are important, but if you’d ask me how to calculate molar mass of chemical compounds etc I’d need to revise again to do that 😅

Another thing you should be aware of. Hills donates millions of dollars to vet schools (Google it). Why? Because they expect something in return. Please don't end up as one of those vets that suggest Hills diets because that's what your boss tells you to do. Whole food is a cornerstone of health in all living beings. Dried, extruded, overly processed ingredients should not be eaten twice a day for the entire animal's life. Learn about pet nutrition. You will quickly become an asset for many clients whose pets have allergies, sensitive stomachs and much more.
