I only recently got into keeping RCS and I love your informative videos. I started setting up a 10 gallon community for a betta so I started with some corydoras and then decided to add shrimp for their pops of color. I fell in love with the shrimp and never added the betta to the tank! Now I’m in the “thinking about it” stage of setting up a shrimp/snail only tank.

You make excellent videos, I’ve been watching all morning. I am about to get cherry shrimp for the first time. I plan to keep them in a heavily planted and carpeted tank, with guppies and 2-3 mystery snails. It’s so glad to hear someone else who uses algae for it’s benefit. Thanks for another interesting video. I know I asked about food and you kindly answered. I think I get quite uptight about diet as I want them to be healthy. I bought some Repashy and gave them their first block this morning. I was very disappointed that they didn’t all rush over to gobble it up!!! 😀 They have nibbled some of it but it’s the snails that seem to just love it !! Maybe the shrimp will eat more of it as time goes by! How is the challenge tank doing. K
@FishKeepingAnswers
@FishKeepingAnswers Год назад
I have no doubt they will get used to it. I frequently end up with mounds of shrimp so thick you can’t even see the food. The first few times I fed Repashy to my Guppy tanks, the guppies didn’t even acknowledge it was food. Now they go gang buster for it 😂

I am worried over substrate with shrimp WITH it being a planted tank. In your experience what's best for planted? I hear aquasoil is the best since it contains everything plants need, but I don't want something that affects water conditions and it breaks down over time. Sand seems good but I'm worried it's harder to plant...the internet says it either is great or it sucks. I don't want dirty...so Walsted is a no for me.
@jennlovesgod1
@jennlovesgod1 Год назад
My most pressing question is...does the waste from the shrimp and snails that lays all over the bottom of the tank and the substrate matter? I'm afraid that if I try to siphon some of it out I'll suck up my baby shrimp. So far the levels of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate in my tank are good, but I worry that it'll get ahead of me since I feed a powder food.
@chrys_3636
@chrys_3636 Год назад
I don't really worry about it since I keep live plants and a level of algae in the tank- it feeds them and reduces the amount of fertilizer I need to keep the plants going. It doesn't look pretty but in 8ish months since I got my shrimp tank I haven't had an ammonia spike. I don't siphon the bottom for the same reason, unless there's uneaten food hanging around.
@FishKeepingAnswers
@FishKeepingAnswers Год назад
Ana’s comment pretty much sums it up. I agree, don’t worry about it 👍🏻

@@chrys_3636 Thank you! I also have live plants and the water is clear. I do get out any leftover food although I've pretty much stopped putting any in because they don't eat it. They seem quite happy to forage on the powdered food I put in there.

I want to catch them all and move to a new tank before they start breeding because I'm sure the Rasbora would eat the babies. How do you catch them? Any tips appreciated.
@FishKeepingAnswers
@FishKeepingAnswers Год назад
I have found the easiest way to catch shrimp is to place the next behind them on the substrate, then move my other hand towards the shrimp. Their natural inclination is to shoot backwards away from my hand and into the waiting net 👍🏻

Hi Richard, I hoped I’d spied my first berries shrimp but I’m afraid upon closer inspection it appears to be a green algae parasite (ellobiopsidae or Cladogonium Ogishimae?) I have been doing a little research and opted to do a brief salt dip on the affected/infected shrimp at about 1tsp aquarium salt per 1 large drinking glass for 3 minutes. I also opted to dose my 20g planted tank with 15ml H202 while performing a 20% water change. Have you had any experience with this parasite? Cheers!
@FishKeepingAnswers
@FishKeepingAnswers Год назад
Hi. I haven’t suffered, HOWEVER, do be aware shrimp eggs can be green. If you are seeing a collection of green blobs exactly where the eggs should be, and only one shrimp is affected, I strongly suspect your shrimp just has green eggs! This is something I have agonised over in the past. I am fairly sure Ellobiopsidae spreads quickly through the entire tank. It is hard however without me actually seeing the shrimp. All the best, Richard

Do you stress over TDS in shrimp tanks ? It seems that merely KH and GH alone can push the TDS above recommended levels without even taking into account other things like calcium, magnesium and tannins etc.
@FishKeepingAnswers
@FishKeepingAnswers 4 месяца назад
In my opinion, the ONLY time TDS means anything is when making up a fresh batch of RO water. Unless you remineralise RO water, don’t waste your time measuring TDS 👍🏻

I just started with cherry shrimp 6 weeks ago and unfortunately have already lost them all. They were drip acclimated in a 15 gallon tank with 5 lampeye killifish and snails. I have hard well water, and the tank was well established at 3 years old. I assume the 10-20% water changes I did weekly must have been the culprit. My question is, in this video you talk about having your shrimp in with goldfish and discuss and I wonder how your shrimp survive the sizable water changes I assume you have to do with those fish. Thanks
@FishKeepingAnswers
@FishKeepingAnswers Год назад
So it’s tricky to know, but it is unlikely a 10% water change would kill RCS unless your water is high in something that is safe for humans but affects shrimp. Maybe copper???? Even so, assuming the main tank water came from the same source as the water change water, it would be even more unlikely the water changes were to blame. With regards to the shrimp in my goldfish tank, I have never noticed any I’ll effect of such large water changes. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I hope you try again with the shrimp and I really hope you have more success in the future 🤞🏻
@domesticwoods
@domesticwoods Год назад
@@FishKeepingAnswers Thanks for the info. Yes my source all comes from the same well. I wondered about copper pipes but everything I have read says it wouldn't be enough to hurt them. But to be sure, run the water for a short time before you refill the tank which I do. I also always us Stress Coat even though our water is not chlorinated which on the lable reads it removes hard metals, so I thought copper was included in that. I'd love to get more shrimp, but not just to send to their deaths.😕 If I can't get an idea of what might have gone wrong, I'm not sure I want to try again.😬
@FishKeepingAnswers
@FishKeepingAnswers Год назад
To be fair you might have just started with a bad batch of shrimp. It happens 🤷🏻‍♂️ With regards to copper pipes, I have a recirculating system where the tanks are all filtered through a single sump and the water returns to each tank through regular copper pipes. I’ve not had any issues 👍🏻

@FishKeepingAnswers
@FishKeepingAnswers Год назад
You can move the babies, but just ensure the new tank isn’t ‘brand new’. The baby shrimp film appreciate some algae and biofilm that develop as a tank matures. To be honest, I would not worry one bit about inbreeding. I haven’t added ‘fresh blood’ to my breeding stock in many years.
