@biggadon. I was dating a man from st. Thomas. And he was moving really fast with me. I’m from the states (Georgia). It’s like he wanted a relationship first before being friends. Is it in yall culture to move fast like that? Also 4 months into it his mom died. Now we don’t even speak anymore and we work at the same place. I’ve reached out to him and he’s not as engaging except when he called to tell me happy birthday. Is that how y’all culture rock??? Man!
I live on St. John, your video is amazing! I love the great shots you captured, you did our small piece of paradise justice! We got displaced and had to lived on St. Thomas for a couple years after Irma & Maria. STT is nice, but STJ is home. Your summary of both islands is spot on. Thanks for sharing ✌🏾
Thanks for the love and for watching. We weren't sure how well this video would go over, but we wanted to share it because we loved our time there so much, especially on St John
Omg I’m going to st Thomas soon wanted to know the spots I can find 🍃 in? I’m not an alcohol person so 😭 can you give me any recommendations as a local?
24 year resident ov the USVI, my simple recommendation is to go to BOTH islands. You can split into two different stays (i.e.. nights on one island, 4 on the other) or base yourself on one and visit the other for day trips. The people ferry (as opposed to car ferry) travels from Red Hook on the east end of St. Thomas to/from St. John every hour from early morning to late evening, so if staying on St. Thomas, you can go spend a nice day on St. John, hitting a beautiful beach via a short taxi or even a 30 minute walk to Honeymoon or Solomon Beach from Cruz Bay, then have dinner at any one of several good restaurants in Love City (aka Cruz Bay) and then return on an evening ferry to Red Hook for an extended bar hop or just back to your hotel. Taking a rental car to St. John via the ferry is less than ideal IMHO as it is expensive, parking in Cruz Bay is limited and you have to return much earlier than the people ferry. Cheers!
St.Thomas is more party like and St.John seems more chill(that's just my preference) also I suggest buying your own food unless ur really rich..the food cost alot and its cheaper just to cook ur own food..
@@MWBarca6 what's it called? I am staying on the east end of St John for my honeymoon in June and we definitely want to cut some cost cooking at the house
I just got home from a vacation in St Thomas. If we ever go to the Caribbean again, we will definitely stay on St John instead! The beaches are much much prettier and it is overall a cleaner/prettier island
St John is my Go to for sure. after 20 + years visiting both, I have to say St John is my first choice! Though for the first time in over 20 years going on a fishing trip that led me back to St john I must say the people at the Swashbuckling Tours were extremely welcoming and make me want to visit and maybe Stay on St Thomas again the next time. Love the vibes and the people on that side of St Thomas!
Totally agree! Thanks for sharing. St John for us was more of a relaxing vibe that we were looking for, but St Thomas is always buzzing with personality
Stt has some of the best spots for just chilling or partying. Stj is way more laid back and relaxed, as somebody who has lived on both after moving here 9 years ago on a whim i reccomend stt, just try to make friends with a local and see the spots past havensight, you will have so much more fun on a local beach like neltjeberg or stumpy than a tourist trap like magens or emerald.
As a native New Yorker who’s roots are in the USVI , I agree. Keep in mind Secret Harbor beach is apart of Secret Harbor Hotel. Coki is my favorite but best to enjoy during off season when there’s more locals and less tourists. Trunk Bay is amazing in St. John and although my family is from both islands, more so St. Thomas I prefer the calmness and seclusion of St. John.
Leaving for St John for our 9th trip to the island in 8 days. Love watching these videos :) We prefer St John but can see the appeal of staying on St Thomas also
Thank you and have fun! Yeah, St John for us was just the perfect vibe. St Thomas was a little too fast-paced for what we were looking for this particular trip.
Great video. We'll be those cruise people for a day in July. 😂.. Great production on the videos. I've been told to point people to another video at the end in order to keep people watching the channel! Keep it up, you guys will continue to grow with quality videos like this. More travel time!!!!! 😊
Thank you for the support! Definitely helps along with sharing and liking so more people get eyes on it. It's a grind, but we agreed every video has to be slightly better than the last. That's the only way to truly grow. Hope you have a great time in July. Let us know what you think of our recommendations when you go.
Just want to say, I truly enjoyed your video! I’m traveling to the US VI next Sunday for a work week. I am a recruiter for doctors to help take care of United States veterans that are disabled. But I just want to say you have a great guy for video and both of you are doing a van tastic job I don’t know how long your channel has been on but it is primo professional! Keep it up I see you hitting 100,000 subscribers by the end of the year! You’ve got a new one in me for sure! :-)
Thanks for the kind words, and really what you do for vets. I'm a vet myself and completely understand how hard it can be for vets out here to get the medical attention they deserve. This is almost year 3 for us, but that some wishful thinking. We're just trying to manifest 100k into existence period. By the end of the year would be a dream!
This year is going to be my 31-33 time going (we go about 3 times a year) and St. John feels more like home than my actual home lol you guys were spot on with the video!
Did both STT and STJ in 2022 for the first time. Both islands are great! Loved the dining choices in Charlotte Amalie. French Quarter Bistro was my favorite in Frenchtown…highly recommend it! Did Cinnamon Bay on STJ for a day…really secluded.
@mega . Is it in y’all culture for you st. Thomians to move fast and jump into a relationship before being friends??? I’m from the states and this guy from St. T who I was talking to I felt was putting the horse before the carriage. Is that good or was he just trying to smash?? We work at the same place but different shifts. His mother died some things happened and he said let’s just be friends but we don’t even speak or see each other on the job except when he called and told me happy birthday and asked what I did for it. Which is weird.
We went to both islands and we agree St John has better beaches and has a more chill vibe. We didn’t have our RU-vid channel yet so that means we have to go back and do it all again 😂
Stayed on St Thomas last yr off season. The best! No one was there. St John beaches are unbelievable. Trunk bay is spectacular. No wonder Chesney lives there!
Same situation we had. There was maybe one cruise ship in port so when we made it to St. John we practically explored the entire Island with there not being a lot of people there.
Me & hubby going next month for our anniversary. We’re introverts (not on purpose) so we want to settle in St John like hotel but do want to explore St Thomas too. We don’t want to rent a car just to have the relaxation of no driving and being chaperoned around lol. Our goal is just to have a great time for our anniversary. Thanks for the video!
Have fun. We're the same way (even though we're probably comfortable enough on camera now to not seem like it.) You'll love St John as an introvert! and if you're spending most of your time there you'll be okay without renting. Don't remember much of a taxi service on the island, but they do have bus stops. St Thomas has taxis. Once you take the ferry over, taxi vans sit outside the red hook shopping area.
You bet! I want to say they all cost except Secret Harbor unless you go to St John. The only one that costs money for us there is Truck Bay. I could be wrong on that though
Hi guys we went there back in 2004 and still look beautiful as i remember then also boss thank you for the info on the phantom lut i started to use them and doing the s log 3 gumut3 icy blue and wow i noticed the difference already my next on is the jamaica lut thank again and beautiful and well put together i may have to take more note from you sir!✊🏽🙌🏼🙏🏼
Makes a world of difference doesn't it? I used to struggle grading my raw footage until I found these luts. Makes the process so much easier and quicker. I also add just a tad bit of sharpness and contrast because S Log 3 takes out the sharpness, and I crank the saturation a little more than what I think looks good because RU-vid's compression seems to make videos look more flat
@@TheDetourDuo that crazy i notice that and i did the same when im inside or night time i use the icy sl3sin3 and outside the regular icy and wow so much easier like you say so THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH! i still have to learn to do more quick take it clip to get to the point and also incorporate the drone and go pro camara this my second channel im a master barber and i do tutorial how to cut hair ans clipper review and i do i mostly livestream i have a set up with 6 different camara the 7aiv , the sony rx100 7, 2 sony zv-1 ,1 sony rxoii and 2 sony x3000 and i use streamlabs ans i have a stream deck where i switch each camara when livestream but now im getting back to doing vlog and staring to learn the s log and color grading in my other channel JEFFREY EL BARBERO MASTER is in spanish i have 152k subcribers but now im doing this new channel to practice my ingish and practice my vlogging edditing skills and definitely you motivate me very much plus i travel with my wife like you guys so i can relate so much thank you again and keep those video coming boss say to youre girl from us ok have a bless day🙌🏼

Cool video!!!! thank you for the information, looks like an amazing place.
Thank you! We were only visitors ourselves so can't really give you good information on wedding locations or anything. We do have separate videos on things to do in both St Thomas and St John on our channel. I believe they are linked in the description of this video. I will say if you can swing it, St John is the way to go for a wedding location. Right on one of the beaches. Won't be as crowded as St Thomas. Secret Harbor in St Thomas also has a hotel there that looks like they host weddings
Really enjoyed this video, looking to travel to both soon with two 15 year olds in tow.. so i think Saint john to stay and enjoy nature and st thomas to see more of the sightseeing is a good plan. Great job with this video! ❤
Hey thanks. That's what we would do whenever we plan on returning. Make sure y'all make it out to some of the snorkeling out on St John. That makes it all worth it.
St. John around July 4th is the best. We did it in 2019 and 2023. I love driving on that island too. You’ll be doing 30 and it feels like 60 at times. Cinnamon Bay has Octopus and Hawks nest had a nice reef with lotta of different sea life. Salt Pond also has several schools of squid.
@@TheDetourDuo if you ever plan to go back and have a group of 4-8 people check out the place we’ve stayed at Villa Alessandra run by Carefree Getaways. The main house sleeps 2 couples and the guest house can hold another 4. It has an amazing view of chocolate hole and St. Thomas. And if you’re there for the 4th you can watch the fireworks from deck like we did
Thanks. I'm sure it's amazing there in the summer. Our goal was to avoid some of the cruise lines. Does it get really crowded during the summer, or does that St. John vibe stay the same?
So my partner and I just decided to make St. Thomas our first bae cation we’re actually celebrating her birthday. Great video, awesome content and great suggestions. I do have to ask…how did you guys go about purchasing cheap airline tickets?
@@TheDetourDuo St. George Village Botanical Gardens. For restaurants, try Rum Runners on the Christiansted boardwalk. I also hear good things about La Reine Chicken Shack, though I’ve never tried them.
Wow that's some number. We didn't spend enough time on St John to really give the food a decent rating but it was 2/3 for us there. The first place we went to was meh, but skinny legs and miss Lucy's were very good.
It's tough because they all offer a different travel experience despite being so close. I guess it comes down to what you're looking for. Are you looking for a more relaxing vacation, or one full of activities and new experiences? I feel like St Croix is a mix between St John and St Thomas. It's bigger, yet still slower paced. Some say St Croix might have the best snorkeling/diving
We are taking our first trip to St. Thomas next week and we are planning a day to go to St. John! Can you tell me where it was that you were hiking in St. John to the top of what looks like a hill or a mountain to oversee everything? Was that at trunk bay? your videos have helped me so much to plan our trip!
Solid video, thanks for the tips about carrying cash! We’re taking our first trip there soon and will be spending a day on STT and the rest on STJ (will have to ferry back to STT for the flight home though) Do you think it’s doable without a car? We booked only a few months in advance and its looking like a rental might not happen since its so short notice. From what I hear it sounds like taxi’s / busses could work for us if we mix that with the occasional hike
Glad it was helpful! It is doable without a car if you stay on STJ. I don't recall seeing many taxi, but there is a bus that runs (no idea what it's schedule is though). Try contacting the company we went through. We recommend them, although last min might be a little heavier on the cost. It's called Dexter's Car Rental. We were able to book a jeep a week before our departure.
Thank you! Very informative. Honestly never looked into the Virgin Islands… can’t lie, not a big geography buff & I honestly thought they were all under British rule 😂 🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️ We will definitely be traveling there
Thank you. Yeah, they have their own set of virgin islands so I can understand the confusion. I was convinced that St Croix was a British Virgin Island
Nice video guys! I'm planning on flying into Thomas and directly going to St John for 2-3 days. I do have some questions I would greatly appreciate if you can answer. For John, we will likely want to explore most of it if possible. Is gas going to be a concern once we rent a car, are the gas stations mainly at Cruz Bay? Once we are done with John, we would like to spend about 3 days at Thomas exploring. Is it easy to travel on Thomas without a rental car, are taxi/local transport rates high? I would prefer not to have a car on Thomas due to the more hectic nature there, but if need be we can.
Thanks so much! I don’t think gas will be a concern. We spent 7 days between St Thomas and St John and only needed to refill the Jeep once (not including topping it off before returning). We only used the car for transportation and we drove A LOT so you should be fine! It looked to be pretty easy getting around to the popular spots via the taxis on St Thomas. Since we had our rental car, we actually didn’t use any of the taxis but they were everywhere and dropped off at popular spots like Magen’s Bay, Mountain Top, etc.
It is but you'd probably have to dedicate at least half the day to the adventure. There were cruisers on St John when we were there. Essentially you'd have to hop on the passenger ferry from Charlotte Amalie and then there should be taxis in cruz bay to take you wherever. Trunk Bay is your closest beach in the park. Just either get the taxi phone number or card so they can pick you up in time to get you back
Beautiful! However, you did not mention how the driving is on the left side of road. Unlike, the rest of mainland states and territories where driving on right side of road. The U.S. ships cars to islands so the steering wheel stays on left but you also drive on left.
Maho Bay beach. If you navigate your way to the beach, you can't miss the stand. You'll likely come from the road that leads past Trunk Bay it will be on the right. But Trunk Bay also has rentals if you don't want to make the drive to Maho Bay
@@madpanthers53 honestly not sure. We rented a car during our stay. We did see cruisers on the beach so I'm sure there is some sort of set up. Otherwise, my understanding is the bus goes around the entire island but it doesn't get from place to place very quickly
All great questions. If you're going to stay on St John, then it's better to just rent there so you won't have to pay the extra $65 per roundtrip for the car ferry as often. If you're staying on St Thomas and making multiple trips to St John, then rent on St Thomas. Just be aware that some of the car rental agencies don't like it when you take their vehicle on the car ferry. The rental company we used, and would 100% recommend, is called "Dexter's Car Rental". Very accommodating, and super friendly. Read quite a few horror stories about other agencies, but every review about Dexter's sings their praises for good reason. You don't need a jeep, but you definitely want a vehicle that is 4x4. Everyone wants to rent a jeep so they tend to hike the prices on them, and they get rented out quickly. If the aesthetic is not something you care about, save some money and get something a little cheaper with 4x4. You might be able to get away with not having 4x4 on St John because it's more paved and less of an uphill drive everywhere, but I still recommend 4x4. Also, it's nearly impossible to drive on St Thomas without it. If you do rent on St John though, all the car rental services we found are exclusively jeep rentals.
So your video gets 2/3s of a thumbs up from me. In order to get a full thumbs up you’ll Have to include St. Croix. When speaking of the Virgin Islands you simply can’t leave it out as though it’s not part of the Virgin Islands.😁
Great video! Traveling to STT this week and will have a rental car. If we go to STJ without the rental car, how can we get to Trunk Bay and Malo Bay? Thanks in advance
I’ve been to St. Thomas, but never St. John. I just started watching your videos and this is the second one. Is it easy to get around on St. John like if you don’t have a rental by using public taxis ?
Thanks! Tough to say as we had a rental but from the looks of it taxis hang out by the ferry terminal and they usually hand out a card or # to call their service so when you need a pick up it shouldn't be much of a problem. We also noticed a bus/shuttle that runs the island but it was hard to tell where the pick up points were or even if it ran on a set schedule. Just give yourself plenty of time to get back before the last ferry leaves the island
There were cruisers on the island when we were there. Not sure the logistics of it though. My guess is they took the passenger ferry over to the island and grabbed a taxi. I'd probably be sure to grab the taxi phone number, or card, and schedule them to pick you up to take you back to the ferry. Aren't many taxi on either island and they tend to stay in just a few places
Yeah it's perfectly fine I had zero issues. Because it's still U.S. there was no issue taking it through the airport just make sure it's in your carry one and the batteries removed (also need to be in carry on). Most places in St Thomas were fine to fly other than near the airport obviously, but St John is majority a national park so I could only flew in Cruz Bay and Coral Bay there. Best practice I always look up the drone laws to places I travel and it's almost identical to the mainland
It's definitely deep into hurricane season so you have to factor that in. On one hand, it's probably the cheapest flight deals you can find. Accommodations will probably been cheaper too. On the other hand, some businesses, excursions, etc might shut down in preparation for storms, or simply because there isn't enough tourism flowing through to stay open during the season. We went in Jan. Found cheap flight deals, weather was nice and there weren't many cruise ships pulling in yet so it wasn't crowded. I'd say around then, Dec-Feb is the best time to visit
My fiance and I went to St Thomas and stayed outside of red hook in the condo's that her aunt owned and let me tell you the locals outside of the all inclusive resorts were absolutely rude and the transplants that move from the states to work there felt the most entitled. We will never go back.
Sorry that was your experience. We experienced the exact opposite. Every single person we can across was friendly and welcoming. We can’t wait to go back! 🙂
It wasn't super dangerous or anything but you do have to be a confident driver. You basically drive up and down a mountain to get anywhere and the locals don't follow the speed limit so they can fly around corners.
Public transportation in the U.S. Virgin Islands is horrible. Buses run on 2 hour schedules, and don’t run weekends or holidays. There is abundant _private_ mass transportation on St. Thomas (I don’t know about the other islands), but they can only operate on restricted routes, and can be hard to find on busy cruise ship days. If you have a disability, there is a public paratransit system.
That's what I thought but I didn't think they were native there. Thanks for the information. That's usually how it goes isn't it? Bring in one animal to stop a pest, then that animal's population grows more rapidly than they expected
I’ve been down there a bunch and the majority of the vlogs have people staying on St Thomas and only going to St John for a day and I always say you’re doing it all wrong! St John is amazing.
@@TheDetourDuo If you guys get the chance to go back to St John, try Dave & Jerry’s Steakhouse or Extra Virgin Bistro for dinner. I know you didn’t get to eat too much there. Also Skinny Legs for lunch!
There are none for US citizens. Just the same precautions as there are on the mainland. Don't visit if you feel sick. That sort of stuff. We traveled with our vaccination card just in case, but we were never asked about it
@@chauncee12 Thanks! we really appreciate that. You don't have much to worry about since it's a US territory. It's basically like flying to a different, or rather more comparable to flying to the state of Hawaii. You don't even need a passport
